One reason this was a little more difficult for you was the tools you used. Your spade is a flat edge which is more for transferring material than breaking ground. To break the edges of the turf, an edging spade or trenching spade is easier - especially ones designed to cut through roots. Then a pointed spade to dig out the hole. The flat edge spade is good for backfilling the hole with gravel (which is a good idea to do rather than just soil because water will cause that soil to settle and then your paver might get wobbly).

However, shops were shut so I had to 'make do' with the tools I had in the shed - but yes... they still look great, though you have to trim the grass around them regularly or they get consumed by the lawn - thanks for giving this video your time. So far watched it twice , becoming a habit . That looked like hard work but as usual you, ve done an outstanding job . Our garden is a similar size and shape 175 foot by 24 foot so I know it can be daunting how to split it , we have veg plot , garden , garage . Looking v. Good can't wait for more !! I loved your video! I made concrete stepping stones last summer. I remember thinking I wouldn't need that many bags of concrete, but that was a LIE. I am way too optimistic for my own good😂 anyway, I can relate to ALL of your comments about how physically hard and grubby this kind of work was AND the ice cream!

Hi Teresa. You did an amazing job with the stepping stones, much better than I could have done. Love them. Too late now, but my Alex says you should have soaked the grass around the stone edges a few times over a day or two while they were in position, that would have softened the turf. Yes, I guess your spade is dull, time to invest in a file, eh? Take care.

Wow, well done, more of a task than one might imagine. May I second an earlier observation, a fine pair of pins - PE with Joe has paid off. Oh! I have just taken my T4 (2003 2.5 TDI) from London to Aberystwyth then to Lincolnshire and finally back to London (rescuing my nephew and delivering him to live with his mum for the mo). Weather was superb, T4 was superb, the mountain road from Rhayader to Aber' was beautiful, and I got 40 MPG!

I’ve been doing this on a sloped hillside, so I would say that is worse. I need them so I can walk there when the turf is dewy or wet since it is behind a flower bed and on the edge of a creek and the bridge I built. Not a fun task but the need for the intended use will make it be appreciated in the long run.

So, my neighbors land is higher than mine so whenever they run their sprinklers the water drift over to the right side of my house and now the grass is pretty much dead and its muddy over there. I was thinking about digging it all up and just place all rocks and stepping stones on that side because it'll defeat the purpose if i buy more sod. Any advices? I've never did this before.
I've got 3 stepping stones to do and as I've cut turf before, I'd say a spade is the worst thing to use. An edging spade would be better as it is sharper and has a wedge shape blade. As my stepping stones are leaf shaped, I'm going use an old sharp knife. Stones are best slightly lower as they don't get in the way of the mower and it can go over the top of them without blunting your blades. Good job though 🤩

I’m thinking of going this route, do you think it would work? - Once happy with the stone layout, keeping the stone in place and tracing around it, cutting the grass with a Stanley knife as you go? A Stanley knife should (?) cut hard, dried turf quite easily making the task quicker and easier than using a spade? I figured you’d get a nice clean cut and a snug fit. The soil bed would still need tidying up with sand/gravel and the height issues would still be the same, but the stone should just drop in and off you go to the next one. Life is never that easy but you never know, it’s worth asking!
Yes... should work well - just make sure each stepping stone is placed at a comfortable pace apart. I used a grit/sand mix underneath each stone - I think its called a 1 in 3 sharp sand mix... your local builders merchants should sell it. Yes, you definitely need to by pretty fit and strong to do this job... but it is do-able, as you saw on the video, and I found it so rewarding when I succeeded at it. Being a solo lady, one income, I try to do things myself to save £. However, I do know when I need help - check out my Laying Railways Sleepers video. You need a man...but it would be cheaper if you hire a handyman....actually you needed a pick with a flat side ....you just go around with the flat side then you lift the piece of grass, compact the ground and then you place your steppingstones on top...have your ice cream....and that is it...
I wouldn't say NEED a man! 🙄 Many men are hopeless at DIY, no eye for detail, no interest and no patience! But there is no doubt some jobs would be easier if I had a 'knowledgable' man to hand, to help . . . sometimes! Why would I pay a 'handyman', when I can save money doing it myself?? Also I really enjoy the challenge of trying, and often 'trying' makes an interesting TWorld video... and gives other women the confidence to give it a go. I always recognise when a task is beyond me... you'll be pleased to know. Such as laying railway sleepers... which is the topic of my next Teresa's World. 🤗
I have watched two other videos on laying stones, one by a man and the other by a woman, neither of them had any problems with digging out the soil like this lady. There must be something they did not mention about the type of spade or something.. Surely this lady would have checked out some videos before deciding to film herself, even i know the stones need to be level. As for the comment " I am a woman and a man is stronger" For God's sake woman this video would put a lot of people off, cos you whinged and moaned the whole time. Goodbye

@@teresasworld3374 I just did something similar with concrete slabs but it wasn't difficult. A little sweat yeah, but not hard. Think about this: There are"tough" jobs you literally cannot do. There's a long list of them. They start with something as basic as moving heavy furniture, and end with something as complex as being a power lineman. I mean...a 12 year old is capable of setting some rocks in the ground. But at the end of the day 99.9% of roofers, brick masons, and power lineman are men for a reason. These men die more often, and die sooner than women. Their bodies become destroyed through hard labor. At least give them that little bit of respect. This is something many men do every single day. Because they are built specifically to do physical labor.

My dear, I used a large serrated knife to cut deep and around the grass to be removed…Then I lifted out with a spade.

You should use a lawn edging tool. It’s got a semi circular head and makes these cuts super simple.

You should done the job just before spring when the garden lawn is easier to work with but could be a bit muddy

Yes, you definitely need to by pretty fit and strong to do this job... but it is do-able, as you saw on the video, and I found it so rewarding when I succeeded at it. Being a solo lady, one income, I try to do things myself to save £. However, I do know when I need help - check out my Laying Railways Sleepers video. You need a man...but it would be cheaper if you hire a handyman....actually you needed a pick with a flat side ....you just go around with the flat side then you lift the piece of grass, compact the ground and then you place your steppingstones on top...have your ice cream....and that is it...
I wouldn't say NEED a man! 🙄 Many men are hopeless at DIY, no eye for detail, no interest and no patience! But there is no doubt some jobs would be easier if I had a 'knowledgable' man to hand, to help . . . sometimes!
Why would I pay a 'handyman', when I can save money doing it myself??
Also I really enjoy the challenge of trying, and often 'trying' makes an interesting TWorld video... and gives other women the confidence to give it a go.
I always recognise when a task is beyond me... you'll be pleased to know. Such as laying railway sleepers... which is the topic of my next Teresa's World. 🤗
I have watched two other videos on laying stones, one by a man and the other by a woman, neither of them had any problems with digging out the soil like this lady. There must be something they did not mention about the type of spade or something.. Surely this lady would have checked out some videos before deciding to film herself, even i know the stones need to be level. As for the comment " I am a woman and a man is stronger" For God's sake woman this video would put a lot of people off, cos you whinged and moaned the whole time. Goodbye

@@teresasworld3374 I just did something similar with concrete slabs but it wasn't difficult. A little sweat yeah, but not hard. Think about this: There are"tough" jobs you literally cannot do. There's a long list of them. They start with something as basic as moving heavy furniture, and end with something as complex as being a power lineman. I mean...a 12 year old is capable of setting some rocks in the ground. But at the end of the day 99.9% of roofers, brick masons, and power lineman are men for a reason. These men die more often, and die sooner than women. Their bodies become destroyed through hard labor. At least give them that little bit of respect. This is something many men do every single day. Because they are built specifically to do physical labor.
