Your stones with the sand borders look the best of all the other videos. You are very good at this! I actually paid a landscaper to put in my pavers and he didn't use a base of sand or gravel. Three years later, they are sinking into the ground and ruining my landscape. I have to weed wack around them to be seen...what a job ahead to pull each one out and level it and use sand or gravel. 😢😢
Nice, clear, detailed, step by step explanation. I liked the fact that the garden was, like mine, a working garden and not super tidy. Thank you, you have given the confidence to put stepping stones in the muddy bit between the gate and the front door. Great stuff!!!
love this video. I want to put in a simple step stone path and looked at a couple of other videos and the "productions" discouraged me before I even started. at his was great!
That's great. I wish the person who laid the lovely York Stone in my lawn had measured the lengths. There's one point where i have to leap. I now know how to lay an in-between stone. Thanks❤
This is so helpful! I got a whole bunch of free flagstone from a man who was getting rid of his pond, and I'm going to try to make a path to my shed where the ground is getting super compacted and weedy. Hopefully my path ends up looking as nice as yours!
Thanks you for this video. Im looking to lay stepping stones from my patio area across my lawn to a summerhouse. What can I do to eventually hide the sandy border around the stones. Can grass grow around to hide the sand. Sorry if this is a silly question 😊
The sand is more stable, allows for drainage, and can't be compressed. If you have a sandy soil then it might be okay to use your soil, but my soil is heavy clay so it would just compress and not provide a stable base.
The sand helps with levelling, without becoming compacted, and keep its volume when wet or dry. Topsoil will expand or shrink depending on how wet it is, will become compacted over time, and could make a clay pan underneath that traps water. So eventually you'd have a wobbly stone with a puddle underneath it, that squelches out when trodden on. At least that's my understanding. Thanks for the question!
I just put my stepping stones on soil, the lawn is on a slight slope. They've been there for 14 years and are perfectly stable. You just have to get it right first time, make sure the soil is flattened and even so there is no wobble. This year, I am going to raise them as over time the rain has managed to make them sink but it did take 14 years! This is my lawn... smallscalegardens.blogspot.com/2023/07/easy-way-to-have-nice-lawn.html
This was so helpful, thank you! I think I will change to round stones, too. Just lovely ☺️

Oh goodness that's awful! The sand is very important, especially if you have heavy clay soil as it will swell and shrink with moisture levels.
5.16 on they look great!

Thank you so much for your kind comment 😊 I'm glad you found it helpful. And yes, our garden is very much not a show garden!
I love DIYer’s. Very nice job ❤
what a lovely, well explained and most of all - naturally and clearly presented video. Such a rear view in today's world. Thank you :)
Thank you wery much for this video. I am making a stone path in my garden right now with similar stones.
This is such a well made video. Good work!

Good job, gave me more idea, thanyou.
Very informative video, thanks for sharing 👍
Great way to test it by "getting on top and rocking back and forth"
Ha ha this made me 😂

@mahis1257 eventually the grass will start to grow in from the sides and the sand will be hidden. Takes about a few months
Awesome thanks !
Hi. It's a great video. Why back fill with sand and not the soil that you've dug out?
The sand is more stable, allows for drainage, and can't be compressed. If you have a sandy soil then it might be okay to use your soil, but my soil is heavy clay so it would just compress and not provide a stable base.
I'll thank you for answering 😅
No weed membrane fabric?
Weeds won't grow thru the stepping stones
I love working with narrow holes 😅
Why do you need to use sand? Why not just use some topsoil? Genuine question cos I wanna put some in my garden.

Looks great! Where did you get your stepping stones?
From Wickes I think 🤔
What kind of sand would you recommend? X
Builders sand, sharp sand. From a builders merchant or DIY shop
