I eat as much carb as needed to get all my micro nutrients from food to at least get the nutrition foundation right. Carb is just gasoline and I can easily adjust my carb intake depending on my level of activity. More long term studies are needed on using the body's backup system of burning fats which evolved to survive famines. Switching from carb gasoline to fat gasoline will work for sure for Eskimos but I doubt all people will adapt well to the less tested backup system of burning fat.

Novick is not a medical doctor. Essylstein's focus is almost exclusively cardiovascular. The world of human physiology, biology, and chemistry is far more complicated than single focused agendas. Fats are absolutely vital. I discovered this the hard way, after adopting a very low fat vegan diet. I'm still vegan, but Dr. Cousens is absolutely right in his stress that there is not a one size fits all vegan diet. Within Veganism, there is much variety.

I have read two of his books and he has seemed a little extreme to me.Live on sprouts and veggies, no fruit or grains or beans. Now he says add coconut oil? I don't know the lifestyle of the people that were in these trials. I'll stick to my whole food, grain free plant based diet. I'm a Frugivore. If you don't have the neurotixins, heavy metals and excitotoxins in your body then you don't need coconut oil or even ghee to pull it out. Maybe for a detox regiment but not to eat daily.

It is not extreme, it is normal.

37:08 - reference Gary Taubes about cholesterol not causing heart disease. First time I've seen a vegan reference Gary Taubes to support their message.

Dr. Cousens promotes a low carb diet for diabetes (25-35 grams carbs) at 47:15, but still vegan. Curious.

Are you saying carbs especially fruit is bad?? Nonsense. The brain runs on glucose. The ATP cycle runs on glucose and can convert fat to use as glucose. The bottom line is you need fruit not refined foods. Check out Dr. Mcdougall, Douglas Graham,Robert Morse. He doesn't say what causes inflamation of the arteries. At 1:03 he says coconut oil raises cholesterol. Dr. Jeff Novick explains in his DVD Oils To Nuts about oils and fats. which makes good sense to me

I'm confused. He says that low cholesterol is NOT good but then takes pains to show how a vegan diet lowers cholesterol.

I agree Dr. Cousens is not the clearest communicator and effective speaker; however, in the 3 vegan diets and statin study, I believe the key points are: 1) High triglycerides are more of a marker for heart disease/stroke and insulin resistance since cholesterol is not a relevant biomarker. 2) Higher dietary vegan fat intake naturally lowers total cholesterol (vs the 2 lower-fat vegan diets) without causing pathology (vs vegan diet w statin). 3) Cholesterol need not be regulated by taking statins (the allopathic way that ignores the harm it causes) because cholesterol is not a disease marker and because of the cholesterol self-regulating liver; our body both recycles cholesterol with the liver making more cholesterol if the body needs more cholesterol for cellular communication, repairs, and regeneration.

I've not view this entire video, and I don't think I can. The video quality is horrible. But maybe there are people whose cholesterol is very, very high; they need to lower it. But if you're too low, that's not good. I think everything is a matter of moderation. But maybe I'm off the ball here. I'm just glad he seemed to point out well that protein does not necessarily equal meat.

I just read about coconut oil at jeff novick's facebook page and that really straightened me out. I am really surpised that Gabriel Cousins is recommending coconut oil. Maybe for certain situations as a treatment or therapy, but certainly not an a daily basis. Can you go there and check it out and get back to me and let me know what you think? Thanx

I agree. It is challenging when we get opposing information from these experts. I am no longer vegan. I eat what our ancestors ate 100 years ago.

I love Gabriel Cousens, but he needs a translator as it's so hard to pull out the conflicting information. Can someone translate, please? So much of what he says seems to go against what he just said.

We''ll there are a lot of doctors that promote whole food plant based diets with no oil. And just because the oil found in coconuts do have a therapeutic affect for Alzheimers. Doesn't mean that it should be included in your diet on a daily basis. I have say it is ok to eat a coconut once a week, but to extract the oil and especially heat it is disasterous. Did you read my other coments? I always thought of Gabriel as the Sacred living food, become ONE with the vibration of the plant world

What an annoying speaker. Does he have to keep saying "keep going" with the slides? Jeeze. Talk to the slide guy and coordinate his talk with him or move the slides himself. Also, what are those boom boom booms on the mike? So annoying. I can't listen to this.

I found the recommendation on using the refined food coconut oil a bit strange. More long term studies are needed on coconut saturated fat which are often used on the ketogenic diets for epilepsy patients to help maintain the high fat diet. I know many diabetics are using high fat diets to maintain normal blood sugar levels but long term studies are needed for proof of longevity since high fat diets are also suspects in causing many diseases including diabetes.

Hmm, I'm all for eating vegan and permaculture organic farming, animals R natural, even incidental, particularly if U live rurally. What I mean is wild animals, deer, bear, or whatever U got around, will pass over ur land, specially if ur growing food. I'm not in2 fences. Like the good song says, "don't fence me in", so don't fence them out, except the small sensitive areas, of course. If U practice aquaculture u'd have fish organic fertilizer, no? I guess his point is don't own animals. Ok

He is talking about Organic Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil, which is very good for you (it has many health benefits) and lowers your cholesterol. You are thinking of hydrogenated coconut oil, which like anything hydrogenated is terrible for you..

As far as the coconut oil is concerned, what if you are a person who is sensitive to the high thiol content of coconut oil? I can eat coconut cream but not the oil....any advice?

    • @rawmark
      @rawmark 8 років тому

We shouldn't be eating any oil as it is pure fat with no fiber. Coconut, on the other hand is nut with fiber and is perfectly fine. Ignore this man. He doesn't give good advise and he's not very respected in the vegan community.
