Bo definitely went for shock value in his teenage years. What I always take away from Bo's early work is the fantastic word play and catchy melodies. He only perfects those more and more culminating in some very vulnerable and moving pieces in his later specials. Bo's specials include songs like, "We Think We Know You", "Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant)" and basically all of his new special Inside. He goes deep into his panic attacks, personal mental health, and retrospection into his earlier works.

Definitely was shock value but like you said the word play is fantastic. It is what made me love his stuff 15 years ago or so. But the fact that this dude Boyd doesn't realize its comedy from the first verse is ridiculous. Is this guy that pretentious or just moronic? Does he know anything about any popular culture? Every time a video of his I watch I get more blown away but his ridiculousness.

Bo is a comedian that specializes in linguistic density. He is probably the most gifted comedian of this age. And burdened. He rose to fame from youtube. Filling stadiums as a young age. This lead to anxiety and depression. Fear of failing both himself and his audience. He has proceeded to work through his conditions on stage. With his latest Netflix special Inside being his reaction to the pandemic. Finding himself locked inside and dealing with his anxieties and fears he decided to make a one man shot, produced, and written comedic special. It is funny on its own but if you have ever dealt with anxiety or depression it speaks to you in a very direct way. It would not be a bad idea for you to deep dive into Bo Burnham. Musically and comedically gifted.

  • @rhoward9302
    @rhoward9302 2 роки тому +94

Bo Burnham is great. He was only about 18 when he did this, so it's rough and yes, there are some offensive jokes that mainly go for shock value, but it's obvious there's talent here too. He's come a long way since then and his shows are a kind of unique mix of comedy, music, and theater. There's still an edge, but it's usually in the service of larger themes like religion, mental illness, or how pop music exploits its listeners. Definitely give his more recent work a listen. "Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant)" is a definite highlight, and from his most recent special, "All Eyes on Me" "White Woman's Instagram" and "Welcome to the Internet" are all worth your time.

Yesss I was hoping you would get to him one of these days.
(Older songs) "New Math" and "Love Is"
(New songs) "Welcome to the Internet" and really his entire new special. His older stuff is much more offensive but back in those times was just "fun comedy" some call it ignorant for sure but his word play is unrivaled. His new special called "Inside" takes a much higher manner of depth and awareness while still holding on to brilliance, his musicality in the new special is quite incredible as well. I would love to see more Bo reactions!

Going into Bo blind is always priceless. Yes it is intended for comedic effect, and especially shock value. He's also one of the OG youtubers. As time went on he focused more on actually having meaning in his songs/bits instead of just shock value but the flows and beats were always there.

I was getting worried we weren't going to get another Bo reaction, thanks for making another one! I really hope you keep digging through more of his work, I'm sure you'll enjoy it all.
Edit: Just finished the vid and just wanted to point out that a lot of his early work (like the video you just reacted to) was pretty out there, offensive, and he's even admitted to feeling as though his older stiff was immature. The internet was just a different time and place back then. I don't think that takes anything away from his works, and actually just proves how much he's grown over the years as an artist/comedian. That being said, I think his stuff is best enjoyed in order as much as possible generally. Sticking with his older material then moving on to his more recent stuff. Bouncing around between the two will definitely take away a lot of the feeling for everything but to really understand that, you've got to know where Bo came from and what he's dealt with over the years to get where he's at today.

Bo Burnham is an amazing highly talented performer who easily got better and more introspective and less shock value comedy as he got older. I feel to fully appreciate his work you must know who he was to understand who he is and why he says what he says today, but his work doesn't lose any value. I personally think you'd love Bo a lot, once you find his more mature lyrically dense work. I love all his work, but as I got older. I vibe harder with his more recent stuff than his older stuff.

I think my favorite is watching him perform it for other commedians. They ask him to sing the song for them and you see Bo smile and say yes because his job is to please the audience. Bo is a prodigy and a genius. This is him when he first started making funny songs and posting them on UA-cam so his brother who was away at school could see them. No idea what a genius he was, almost zero self awareness. Since then he hasn't been the most prolific entertainer (though he was a regular treat when Vine was still a thing and Bo Burnham's Vines are the defining masterpieces of the now defunct platform) but he has arguably given us four of some of the best comedy specials ever with "Words, Words, Words" in 2010 (at age 20), "What" in 2013, "Make Happy" in 2016, and his most recent special "Inside" for which he's won several Daytime Emmy Awards and has been nominated for at least two Grammys. If this is your first foray into his work I envy you. He was amazing as a teenager and it just gets better and better from here.

This is one of his very first videos he did when he started on UA-cam. He has multiple specials, including on Netflix. All of them have a unique and lasting message intermixed with all the comedy, and each special he takes a step higher in that creative structure. While it's entirely possible to go down a Bo Hole, I would recommend watching them chronologically, one sitting at a time.

I most definitely would love to see more Bo reactions from you. Most of his songs are well thought out, well written, incredibly clever and thought-provoking. "Welcome To The Internet", "Left Brain, Right Brain", and "Lower Your Expectations" are some of my favorites.

This is the best reaction to anything on the whole damn internet. I'm dead man. I'm absolutely dead. You had me the whole the way through with your facial expressions I'm instantly sub'd with the bell on, I'm intrigued, I'm pleased to meet you, I need to know more about you immediately. I'm watching everything else on your channel right after this.

Yes please, more Bo. His early stuff is weird and sometimes rough but ultimately he's a fucking GENIUS and I do mean that in the way it's meant. He was 16 when he wrote this stupid shit and he's embarrassed by it. To truly appreciate Inside you'll need to see some of his earlier stuff, like honestly ANY context is better than none, but Inside is still a work of pure art without context. Bo is a sketch artist, comedian, satirical musician, observant and opinionated as FUCK. You could pick almost anything from his discography and I'd be happy but PLEASE don't start on Inside yet. Your Weird Al journey has prepared you for Bo a lil bit but Bo is wholly unique.

Yeat some of his old stuff is much better than the horribly cringy p.c intro to his new show.

Please continue diving into this mans content! Its incredible seeing his growth from youtube to the latest "Inside" special. Its hard to explain but I grew up watching and laughing at his youtube stuff, and now I cnt get through parts of the Make Happy special and a lot of the Inside special without breaking down. His early stuff can be a bit tough to react to but I do think its important to kind of give you an idea of how he's grown

Bo's early work was made to entertain his older brother, who served over seas. You can see over time how it goes from entertainment, to something he's not really driving, but more just along for the ride for, to getting introspective and really thinking about what he's doing and who he is, cumulating in his work on Inside, where he's really mastered his craft. It's been amazing to watch, as someone who's only a couple years younger than him, basically growing up with him through his content.

Yes please keep reacting to Bo . And after this you should check out some of his more introspective and serious songs like "Art is Dead", "From god's Perspective" and "Repeat stuff LIVE" AND SPECIALLY some of his more recent ones "CAN'T HANDLE THIS" and "ALL EYES ON ME" and "WELCOME TO THE INTERNET" . Because this song is like 15 years old and he was just kid and sang mostly comedy songs.

Art is Dead, Welcome to the Internet, Kanye Rant, and All Eyes On Me are some of his best songs that are more "current". A lot of his earlier stuff was definitely shock and awe comedy. He still does some of the shock and awe stuff, but he's a lot more nuances nowadays.

To completely contradict my previous comment, I think you, specifically, would have a fun time with "How The World Works," from Inside. It'll show the drastic growth from here to his current awareness, and I feel you'd GREATLY appreciate it. Any videos you can find with the video themselves, whether you have to blur it for us to avoid copyright or not, is better than just audio. Bo puts a ton of work into the visuals of everything he makes and he's also fucking hilarious when you're just watching.
