    Voldemort had one fatal weakness: Arrogance. He viewed himself above all others and refused to believe the concept of how 'Loyalty of the Wands' works, even though Harry Potter told it to him. He couldn't acquire the power of the Elder Wand, while both Grindelwald and Dumbledore did. He got a Horcrux snatched by a house-elf. He thought no one knew about Room Of Requirements. And he actually thought Snape would be on his side after he murdered Lily Evans/Potter.
    One on One, Voldemort did seem more powerful than Grindelwald: But that's irrelevant. Leaders, such as Dumbledore, Voldemort and Grindelwald always fought vicariously through their armies and spies.
    Voldemort's followers feared him, Grindelwald's were loyal to him. Therefore Grindelwald was less likely to be betrayed.

      He has plenty of weaknesses besides arrogance. Snake man's practically a cocktail of flaws and blunders, including normally contradictory ones like overconfidence and paranoia, emotional stuntedness and emotional volatility, and such.
      But yes. A loyalty-inspiring villain far outclasses one that rules through fear.

      @@Reese91momo Individually, Voldemort is stated to be the "The most powerful Dark Wizard, of all time."
      Voldemort is the only wizard we know who was able to create Inferi. Dumbledore even stated, that without Harry's help, he would not be able to break through the protection Voldemort put in the Cave. Voldemort's curse on the Horcurx was so powerful, that even Dumbledore and Snape couldn't stop it, only contain it.
      One on one, Voldemort would probably win. But power is never displayed on individual terms. Voldemort couldn't take over the Ministry of Magic alone. He needed his army. Therefore I'm saying: Voldemort and his army VS Grindelwald and his army - Grindelwald would win for sure.

      @@paul_rymar However, despite the fact that these are quite impressive powers, I don't really see their usefulness in 1v1, we must also consider that a duel is not won by brute power, especially for wizards of this caliber, but must also be had taking into account the physical ability and intelligence of the fighters, for example, speaking of past feats, although it is true that Voldemort was the only one capable of creating inferis and his curse could not be stopped by albus or by severus, it is also true that a Grindelwald elder and haggard from being locked up for 50 years, he was able to block Voldemort's Legilimency ability with his Occlumency despite Voldemort being a master at it.
      It is also known that Grindelwald was able to have a 3 hour duel with Albus, (and this duel is considered one of the best in history) when they were both at their best, in the books we witnessed how an old Albus was able to put Voldemort in many problems to the point that he forced him to retire
      Grindelwald proved to be a manipulator as big as Dumbledore and let's remember that Albus was moving the tiles on the board all the time to the point of using his own death to achieve victory over Voldemort.
      So in a 1v1 duel I think Grindelwald realizing that Voldemort outclassed him in brute power would play defense until Voldemort shows some openness to defeat him which is quite possible because as you said one of the more flaws Voldemort's greats are his virtually nil emotionality and his arrogance and Grindelwald as the master manipulator he is, they would surely exploit these weaknesses during combat and eventually end up killing him or at least that's my opinion.

      Perhaps by gaining a form of immortality, Voldemort lessened the need to have empathy and increased his feeling of invinsibility, furthemore he gained an dreadful reputation over time, so he could count on it to persvaude people.
      A cartoon villain Tirek had something similar. He was a villain who became more and more powerful throught the story until he was defeated. Whike weak he was very manipuliative, but as he gained power, he became more and more as a brute and bully.

      @@blacksye637 Funny enough this is often found to happen in many peoples lives as they get older. We have many examples in history of generals who were in their prime unbeatable but later on as they waged and age or even arrogance dulled their skills.
      Hannibal seemed to lose his edge near the end of the Punic war, there is a theory that the last few battles in India done by alexander where showing small signs of decline in his leadership. Pompey as well.
      Then there are many sports stars example as well that I am sure a more dedicated sports fan can point to.
      Voldemort though had a bad run of decline, First he became "immortal" then feared no death and got arrogant, underestimated his arch enemy again and again due to his age. Was out planned by a dying Dumbledore who pre planned Harry's victory or the key details at least.
      When he was body less his skills where likely not used use and so slacked a bit.
      And his final mistake was never adapting to or fully learning about the way Harry was saved and how love magic worked. Or how Harry passed it to his friends in the final battle.

He didn’t even thought about asking others who were at the moment dumbledore was killed to figure out who is the true master of the elder wand, if he did it would be likely that he would found out malfoy is the owner of the wand. Heck he don’t even need a brain for that, just kill everyone who land spells on dumbledore to be safe. He didn’t even bother to check if harry potter is dead yet even though he just used the same spell that failed to kill him the first time. Again, he didn’t need to be smart to think of chopping harry’s head off to be sure. Not to mention dumbledore have to protect harry and pin down bellatrix while fighting voldemort so the “ Voldermort and dumbledore is pretty evenly matched when dumbledore have the elder wand” doesn’t really applied. Nah. I think Grindlewald just didn't want to be immortal. He wanted to change the world by making it so witches and wizards didn't have to hide from Muggles but he didn't want to live forever. Like Dumbledore he knew death was a natural part of life and that everybody dies eventually. Voldemort on the other hand was frightened of death since his mother died giving birth to him and he originally thought that she wasn't a witch because to him if she had been she wouldn't have died. Him finding out that wizards and witches can die despite being magical scared him even more.

    • @spellywelly

      I think Voldemort’s desperation is made crystal clear from the horcruxes alone. He was prepared to tear his soul to absolute shreds to create them. It makes no sense to me that doing so increases strength, rather that it diminishes it. It’s not something I could imagine a wizard of superior intelligence even considering. Well, perhaps, but not more than one!
      The soul /matters/. Old Magic is like holding a mirror to your soul - you can’t fool it. Voldemort was working with a lot of Old Magic without understanding how it really worked. Otherwise he’d have figured that Harry would invoke it the moment he made the choice to willingly sacrifice himself.
      LOTS of blunders I don’t envisage Grindelwald committing. But thankfully Voldy did, so we could have that precious story!

    Obviously. Grindlewald terrorized more area, we can see in the movies that he had a larger army with an obsecurus, he came closer to his goal by threatening the statute of secrecy, he deuled Dumbledore and aberforth simultaneously, and not only got the best wand in history at the age of 18 but practiced with it till perfection. He was a seer, could turn invisible without a cloak, and he was an amazing occlumence. Also, he had some much knowledge, he knew about the deathly Hallows since teenagehood. Voldemort only got to know that weeks before dying. Voldy bit of more than he could chew. He couldn't even understand the elder wand and horcurxes and as a result ended up meeting a fate worse than death. Also, Grindy kept the greatest wizard of all time at bay for decades, even after Dumbledore got the blood pact he didn't advance against Grindlewald until nearly a decade later. Also, his speciality on pottemore is dueling and he dueled twenty highly trained aurors alone, with a wand he hadn't even mastered. And his wandless magic is so highly powerful, he disarmed and chained three people at once while simultaneously summoning an object towards himself, in fanastic beast 1

    One thing that makes a HUGE difference in an in depth villain and a cheap villain, is their character. Im not saying Voldemort was a bad character, but Grindelwald will definitely have a much more lasting impact when the Fantastic Beasts films are finally done.
    The difference? I've already stated it; character. What made Thanos such a compelling villain in the MCU? What made Killmonger an epic and symbolic villain in Black Panther? When you look at the root of their reasoning, they're right. In a sense, at least. What makes Grindelwald already a much more compelling villain than Voldemort from just the Crimes of Grindelwald, is that he was right to some extent about why he was doing what he was doing.
    Voldemort used scare tactics and constantly bullied everyone into his hierarchy of power because he knew that no one was strong enough to stand up to him. Grindelwald on the other hand, he states his beliefs and truly believes that what he is doing is for the right cause. Believing that the full freedom of his beautiful people in the Wizarding World is worthy enough to fight for, no matter the cost. This is exactly what he says to gather followers, and those who do not believe in his beliefs, are just another misfortune of his cause. And THAT is what makes Grindelwald such an amazing character, and we've only seen one movie so far that was based around him, as the first Fantastic Beasts movie was an introduction to the world and story of Newt, Albus and Grindelwald.
    By the time the Fantastic Beasts franchise is over and done with, I believe that many people will argue that Grindelwald was a better overall villain than Voldemort.

    the more powerful and knowledgeable in dark magic, but Grindelwald is more skill and knowledgeable in magic overall.
    Essentially, Voldemort is the most powerful Dark Wizard, but Grindelwald is the most powerful wizard of the two.
    Similar to how The Hulk is physically stronger than Thor, but Thor, because of all his abilities, is more powerful than The Hulk.
    Back to Voldemort and Grindelwald, the former is unable to use his Legilimency to get inside the latter’s mind, despite Grindelwald being old, weaponless, and imprisoned for decades.

He was a master of manipulation and understood how to influence people. Voldemort didn't bother to take the time to understand human nature so controlled people by brute force, control and fear. It seemed that Voldemort was similarly charming and manipulative in his teenage years, but perhaps creating the Horcruxes weakened his mental state, as he became much more erratic and undisciplined in adulthood.

  • @phremg535
    @phremg535 4 роки тому +23

    I’ve been thinking about it a lot.
    Grindelwald just never wanted to hide his abilities from Muggles. He wanted to be free and mingle with the Muggle world. There was really nothing wrong with his message.
    Voldemort, however, gained his followers through threats and violence. Grindelwald merely said “join me” and called it a day. Yes, he did murder Leta (which was dumb) but it shows that he doesn’t care about blood status. Voldemort would have spared her for her lineage.
    Voldemort leads a life of needless murder and violence. There is no reason for his kills; a prime example for this would be the mini-genocide of a bunch of goblins simply to get his anger out.
    Grindelwald stood with his people. Voldemort watched from afar until he had to interfere, but only when he knew or believed that he had the upper hand.
    Emotions are important. Grindelwald was able to feel every single one, but Voldemort? Love. Love was absent. Love makes a great leader; it grants you compassion and understanding. He lacked both these traits, but would beat Grindelwald in a duel. While that is true, Grindelwald would have gone down attempting to protect his followers. Why? Because he *stands with them.* They share his vision. His death would be passing the torch to them, and their last memory would be of him fighting ruthlessly against Voldemort *alongside* them.
    Free will instead of fear is also a trait I admire. Fear drives people to resent you. Admiration drives people to adore you.
    Calm and collected over impulsive and erratic are two personality types where there is a clear victor. Look at Bella and Molly’s duel: The former was eccentric and the latter was careful in placing her spells.
    We all know the victor from this situation.

Sure Tom riddle was a gifted wizard and a master at Dark magic; however the horcrux only made him hard to kill. Nicolas flammel and Albus Albus Dumbledore both lived longer than Tom riddle; they did not have horcrux, though the former did have the philosophers stone. like when Newt accios the niffler. non-sense. you can't accio living things. because if you could, the entire Harry Potter saga would have ended in the first chapter.
      so that's a entirely necessary magical rule, that those movies can't simply retcon.
      "the dark lord raised his wand, and with a hateful hiss uttered one of the least destructive spells in all of known magic, that would this night have devastating consequences.
      "Accio baby Harry Potter," he said in his inhuman rasp.

      Grindelwald was retroactively made stronger in order to make the prequel movies more interesting.
      he showed a greater diversity of magic because people complained that all the magic in the Harry Potter was the same (which it was. everything just sent people flying backwards. only difference was the colour).

  • @blackace1295
    @blackace1295 3 роки тому +2

    6:36 You say Dumbledore was dying because of the curse on his hand....that's wrong. Dumbledore gains the curse in the 6th book, the same one he dies in. I disagree with the assumption that prime voldemort < prime dumbledore as well. I think Voldemort was infinitely stronger than Grindelwald in terms of raw magical power. Consider the fact that Voldemort's original rise to power was in the years preceding Harry being born. I think it safe to assume at least 5-10 years before Harry was born, combine that with Harry's age at the time of his 5th year when they dueled and you get anywhere between 19-24 years which isn't an insignificant length of time. Plenty of time for Dumbledore to be fairly younger and probably still just as capable. Voldemort just lacks the same cunning and drive that Grindelwald had and was infinitely more arrogant which is what led to his downfall. I do think you also nailed the main difference between Voldemort dissecting magic and taking only what he viewed as useful. Also a form of arrogance but probably his major weakness in a direct comparison to Grindelwald.
    If you need further proof of what I've said, consider this. Albus Dumbledore beat Grindelwald in a duel WHILE Grindelwald held the elder wand. If we consider that the elder wand is a huge power multiplier, that means Albus was many times more powerful than Grindelwald. Voldemort however, fought Albus to a standstill WHILE Albus had the loyalty of the Elder Wand. If you want to look at it mathematically.
    Albus = 50 Magical power
    Grindelwald = 20 Magical power
    Elder wand = x2 multiplier
    Voldemort = X?
    Albus vs Grindelwald -> 50 vs 20x2 (40) - Albus Wins.
    Albus vs Voldemort -> 50x2 (100) vs X? (>= 100) - Standstill fight.
    We don't know what X? is but we DO know it has to be at least 100 or close to it.
    Obviously the math is figurative placeholders and we can even add in age removing a bit of power from Albus but the math would still work out easily that Albus has to be stronger than Grindelwald by a fair margin and thus, Voldemort has to be stronger than Grindelwald. Just my thoughts on the matter.

    • @FilthyTrot
      @FilthyTrot 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, even with the power of the Elder wand, Grindelwald lost to Dumbledore. Voldemort stalemated Dumbledore when Dumbledore wielded the Elder wand. Dumbledore even says to Harry near the end of the seventh book that he was "never afraid" of what Grindelwald could do to him magically and that Grindelwald was less skillful than he was. Meanwhile, Dumbledore says in the Order of the Phoenix that Voldemort's knowledge of magic is "perhaps more extensive than any wizard alive". He also says in the second book that Voldemort was possibly more brilliant than he was. Voldemort > Grindelwald. Full stop. It seems like every single argument for Grindelwald being able to beat Voldemort is contradicted by the books.

    Voldemort dueled an ELDER WAND WIELDING DUMBLEDORE and left the battle unscathed after he realized he wouldn't be able to kill Dumbledore since Dumbledore was strictly fighting on the defensive to protect Harry and to stall until Aurors arrived, when he could go on the offensive, by that point Voldemort would be incredibly outnumbered.
    Voldemort is the only wizard that has dueled Dumbeldore and evaded death or capture. And he had horcruxes to preserve his life after death.
    Voldemort's curse on Marvolo Gaunts ring was enough to nearly instantly kill Dumbledore who only put the ring on for a "a single moment."
    *"The ring, Harry. Marvolo's ring. And a terrible curse there was upon it too. Had it not been - forgive me the lack of seemly modesty - for my own prodigious skill, and for Professor Snape's timely action when I returned to Hogwarts, desperately injured, I might not have lived to tell the tale."*
    Voldemort dueled Kingsley Shacklebot, Minerva Mcgonagal, and Horace Slughorn *simultaneously* all extremely practiced and powerful duelists in their own right, and defeated all of them...
    Alone. According to JK Rowling the only reason they weren't killed is because of Harry's sacrificial protection on them. Which shielded everyone inside the Great Hall from the Killing Curse.
    And perhaps the most damning bit of evidence; Dumbledore himself said Voldemort was stronger:
    *"Did you know then sir?" "Did I know I just met the most dangerous dark wizard of all time? No."*
    You could make the argument that by "dangerous" he means people killed, but that still doesn't account for literally every other one of Voldemorts many feats.
    Grindelwald was an amazingly powerful foe, but a single duel one on one with Dumbledore and it was over.
    And sorry, but even if your only going by the films, that makes Grindelwald even worse because he got beat by a couple of no-name Aurors in the first film.
    I respectfully disagree.

      i do want to point out that its been proven that in dules the elder wand provides no benefit since the wand forces you to utilize and channel magic through it like an ordinary wand because it seeks the most powerful owner to wield it, when Voldemort dueled Dumbledore, the elder wand did not lend him its full power because whoever won would have its allegiance. the wand is the most sentient wand ever made and it is unknown why it chooses to work the way it works. that being said the wand under non-dueling circumstances provides a lot more power as seen in crimes of Grindelwald petago diabolica was able to be weaponized on the level it could have destroyed an entire city was just a small taste of its true power, i doubt Voldemort can wield such power but Voldemort was more powerful because of the horcruxs he had which gave him a distinct power that Grindelwald never had
      how do i scale it:
      Voldemort had a powerful wand, he was a half blood from the gaunt family, plus he didnt know how to love. this made Voldemort more powerful in terms of who is more dangerous especially with horcruxs in consideration and how radicalized he and his deatheaters were and his skill with dark magic.
      Galet Grindelwald: seer, elder wand, elemental magic, dark magic natural lore, wand lore, magical lore, charisma patents, wisdom and strategic mind set plus dumbledor level magic in terms of raw power.
      these attributes make Voldemort's power set would in a dual baring the elder wand if Voldemort and Grindelwald ever dueled, Grindelwald would undoubtably have an edge but the horcruxes give Voldemort an edge but take that away he would be weaker. the only difference is Voldemort was immortal because of his Horcruxes alone

    • @noornazim1
      @noornazim1 2 роки тому

      In the first film Grindelwald was duelling many Aurors than voldemort ever duelled and still was able to fight them. He only got defeated because Newt from behind used one of had s beasts to stop Grindelwald that was the only reason he lost. Voldemort on the other hand flees away when the Aurors with fudge came along. And in the end of part two he used protego diabolica a spell which protects you and kills your enemy at the same time. And he did not let any Aurors escape. And that is far more powerful than fiendfire and avada kedavra. And that only Grindelwald and dumbledore knew how to do it.
      Voldemort feared death and to prevent it he created horcruxes which is why it was hard to defeat him or kill him because he was immortal. Grindelwald did not fear death and was nearly successful compared to voldemort. Voldemort followers other than Bellatrix followed him only out of fear and in the end they betrayed him. In Grindelwald case his followers were loyal and caring towards him as also he loved and cared for them.
      In dumbledores case saying about dark wizards he wouldn't have considered Grindelwald as dark because he loved him a lot and they were more close as brothers. Even after his defeat he used to say about his love and relationship about Grindelwald to harry.
      And Grindelwald was considered a threat to the whole wizarding world while Voldemort on the other hand was considered a threat only to Britain. Grindelwald was also able to capture the whole of Europe only in 6 years while voldemort took 14 years and took over Britain. Every was against Grindelwald and wanted to stop him but voldemort only the British ministry was against him. Grindelwald also had something voldemort did not have love. And that is the most powerful magic of all as said.
      Voldemort only was able to create fear and bring in followers on the other hand Grindelwald was able to bring people towards his side without creating fear. He was able to bring people to his side by speech and through understanding and he was always one step ahead and stopped who was against him as we see in the end of fb2.
      And do not forget after 53 years of his defeat locked up in a cell with no wand to perform magic he was still able to block voldemort from entering his mind. I cannot think of anyone doing this (maybe other than dumbledore.)
      In conclusion Grindelwald was a master dueller and knew a vast knowledge on magic compared to voldemort. Voldemort only knew darks arts more than anyone Grindelwald knew many types of spells both dark and light. He was a master in occulumency which would do no good to voldemort. Dumbledore and Grindelwald both dulled in their prime and he was able to hold of dumbledore for 3 hours this was said to be the best duel ever and no duel could ever match it. Voldemort duelled someone who was way past their prime age and took him nowhere close to three hours. Both of them lost to someone while possessing the elder wand. Difference is gellert got defeated by someone who was his equal and voldemort got defeated by a teenager. We know for voldemort the elder did not respond because the wand was under Harry's ownership. For gellerts case we don't what happened for him to loose. Maybe he got betrayed by the wand because dumbledore was slightly more skilled and powerful than him.
      Grindelwald easily claps over voldemort in a duel because of his knowledge so Grindelwald has the upper hand. But because of voldemorts horcruxes I would say he has the upper hand there. If you take away his horcruxes he would be easily defeated by gellert with or without the elder wand.
      In conclusion I would say Grindelwald is more stronger and powerful while voldemort is more dangerous, evil, feared and ruthless.

    The thing with Voldemort, is that he was deep in mysticism, more then reality.
    He liked and wanted to be unique and special, so the thought of being connected with the founder of Hogwarts really appealed to him, and also having object related to the school(His diary, was his school diary, perhaps the happiest days of his life).
    That also means he could never make a simple stone and horcrux, nor throw them at the bottom of the ocean where no one could reach it. Grimgotts was another exemple, linking himself to something deeply rooted in the magical world, in a vault of one of the older and richest family(Lestrange vault).
