You get SO many BONUS points for utilizing the finale of 'Hoedown' as the outro for your video. Trilogy is very, very strong. In my opinion it contains Carl Palmer's cleanest drumming and as a virtuoso he has multiple high points...including his controlled, rubbery sound on 'Sheriff'. Greg Lake - as a young man - had a marvelous voice. Not my favorite progressive rock band but ELP demands great respect for their musicianship. Cheers!

Starman, you have done a pretty good job of summing up ELP, which was probably the third best prog group after Yes and Genesis. Agree, Trilogy was the best. Great Lake felt the same way. It has their finest track and concert fave "Hoedown," an utter tour de force for a trio, and their finest ballad "From the Beginning." The title track is also wonderful. Agree, Brain Salad Surgery is their second best on the strength of the "Karn Evil 9" suite and the "Still You Turn Me On" ballad. Third for me would be Works 1, which was most exciting when it came out. The Piano Concerto is a triumph for Keith Emerson, particularly the third movement. Greg Lake's side is strong, especially with "C'est La Vie." Palmer's "Tank" remake was an improvement and other tracks like "Food for Your Soul" were most enjoyable. Fourth would be the ELP debut album on the strength of "Take a Pebble" and "Tank," in particular. Fifth would be Works II on the strength of "I Believe in Father Christmas." Beyond that, I never listened to Tarkus or Pictures at an Exhibition much so I may be missing something there. As for the others, they don't really matter.

One comment I forgot to make regarding "An Officer and a Gentleman" on "Love Beach" is that Emerson plays a Fender Rhodes Electric Piano for the first and only time ever that I know of. I always wondered why he didn't play one more often. I can image how great it would have sounded on some earlier pieces like Tarkus. Perhaps he wanted to avoid it because many other keyboard players were using one extensively, particularly in Jazz and Fusion music, i.e. Jan Hammer, Chick Corea (RIP), Herbie Hancock, etc. That would have been one of my questions for him if I ever met him. I have a 1972 Fender Rhodes Mark 1 Stage 73 and I really love it. Here's a song from my second album that was inspired by Emerson: ua-cam.com/video/ljnCb1F2t7s/v-deo.html

Edlp my favorite group since they first came on the scene. To me there first five albums and I'm including pictures at an exhibition will always be what I considered the true Emerson Lake and Palmer. I would like to say that of their later music the song titled something like when the windmills and apple blossoms in your mind I'll be your Valentine or something like that was really an outstanding song especially if you're into jazz-rock Fusion. Sorry if I butchered the title of the song because it's really a stupid name for a song but the instrumentation in that track is top-notch and reminds me a lot of the mahavishnu orchestra or Return to Forever. Everything else 1977 and after sounded to me like a total different band and was a huge disappointment after Brain Salad Surgery.

  • @andragg
    @andragg 2 роки тому +1

I think ranking albums is not an accurate way to assess ELP. If you were a teenager when their first album was released as I was, it would come down to the impression each song made on you, which is different for younger people listening to them decades later. In the early '70's there was so much incredible music come from the Rock genre at such an accelerated pace, it was mind boggling. I was blown away hearing their debut album open with a Bartok piece, which I was familiar with already because I was studying piano. I agree that "Love Beach" was weak except for "An Officer and a Gentleman". Works Volume 1 was mostly great except for a few Lake and Palmer pieces. Emerson's Piano Concerto and Pirates were superb. It's hard for me to rank their albums because each of their greatest songs can stand alone. Most of Tarkus was great. Trilogy had only a few songs I would say were outstanding. Brain Salad Surgery contained 3 pieces that were great, Jerusalem, Toccata and Karn Evil 9 2nd impression. I saw them in 1973 when Emerson was wearing his armadillo-like outfit, plus he was very thin and his face was rather strange, then throw in the bizarre looking giant Modular Moog with its alien sounds, their complex songs and I saw and heard something downright otherworldly, something I had never again experienced. Next, I saw them in 1977 and it was an outstanding performance even though they dropped the orchestra. Bottom line is, you had to be their when it unfolded to truly appreciate ELP.

While I'd agree their last two albums aren't as good or as legendary as their classic 70's era, I don't think the albums are as bad as some claim. They have a few good tracks I think. I personally like Works 1 more than Works 2. Brain Salad Surgery has always been my favorite. Their debut is a very close second, and Tarkus being a close third. Not much separates the top 3 for me. Not much to argue here, really. I agree with others who mention you should have included Pictures at an Exhibition, since it is all new material; the fact that they recorded it in front of an audience, rather than in a studio, should not be important. The Works albums were not strong start to finish but had good moments and the live shows with the 63 piece orchestra were epic (saw the one at Soldier Field Chicago). Good ranking and I generally agree, more or less1 ;-)
    1. Brain Salad Surgery (absolute top, the rest don't come even close for me! 👌🥰👍)
2-4. Self Titled, Tarkus, Trilogy - tied/can't choose, all fantastic and all have about equal strengths and weaknesses IMHO!
    5. Works Vol 1 - I've long thought it would have been a stronger album with just one or two solo songs from each member on one side and then side 2 with Fanfare and Pirates.
A strong side 1 might have been just the 3rd Movement Emerson's Piano Concerto, Palmer's The Enemy God and Two Part Invention, and Lake's C'est La Vie and Closer to Believing?
    6. Love Beach - I give the album cover a generous D- 😁 and Lake's short songs are all fairly meh but Canario is fantastic and Memoirs is lovely and I listen to both far more than anything on the following albums.
    7. Black Moon - lacking energy and often plodding, it's still a solid album and much more listenable start to finish than the following two (and even more than Love Beach but . . .)
    8. Works Vol 2 - I LOVE cuts Brain Salad Surgery and Father Christmas, don't really care for most of the others and HATE Tiger In A Spot Light! 😅
    9. In the Hot Seat - If this music had been done by completely unknown musicians, I probably wouldn't judge it so harshly but when I think that these are the same lads that did The Barbarian, Take A Pebble, Tank, Tarkus, Baba Yaga, Great Gates Of Kiev, Endless Enigma, Trilogy, Abaddon's Bolero, Toccata, Karn Evil 9 . . . . . . 🥺😔

But whenever Sand Lake and Palmer Got A Different Drummer they weren't Emerson Lake and Palmer anymore. I definitely agree with your Best list. That's an interesting point you bring up about taking the best of 2 less than great albums to form a good album. Although, Love Beach is a guilty pleasure for me... I "shouldn't" like it but I do. Haha Same thing with Yes's Talk album.

For some reason, I never had the same affection for ELP as I have for Genesis and Yes. Love Beach really was a dog though.

@@robertmounsey4682 Self titled is honestly the best. No filler, they didn’t overstep in trying to be as ambitious as possible. Not to mention every song is pretty good and it’s their most consistent album.

This was a band with Keith and Keith and Carl and Robert Berry in Greg's spot. The 11:35 album is terrible.
I saw them once at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary at MSG. They were there to represent ELP.

I absolutely love Tarkus, but for the most part I find ELP lacking.... something. Soul? Feeling? I mean, every note is perfect and precise, but it never grooves or makes me feel anything. I think its the keyboards.... doesn't hold a candle to what Rick Wakeman, Richard Wright or Tony Banks bring to the table. I have great respect for their musicianship though.

To each their own. ELP makes me groove like a madman and feelings/soul are abundant in the music! In contrast, when I listen to Nirvana, I just fall asleep. It's slow, trudgey, simplistic and boring compared to the awesome onslaught of ELP. Also, not all of ELP's notes are perfect and precise...

Man you are way way way off-base on that one. Keith Emerson literally blows those guys away. I've seen yes open up for Emerson Lake and Palmer in 1971 and there was just no contest. Emerson did it all and did it faster more precise he Incorporated Jazz and classical along with that huge modular Moog synthesizer. I don't even considered Wakeman as second place that would go to t vanleer all of focus. No dude Emerson made it to the top of the mountain Heights those others never reached.

Okay I get it now. I can tell by your picture you're just a kid. So you really don't know what the hell you're talkin about when it comes to mr. Emerson anyway.

Allow me to thank you for doing proper research and pronouncing HR Giger's name correctly. He is not Geiger!
