Here's is my list and my opinions on the albums just in case anyone cares lol 1. Brain Salad Surgery, the term masterpiece gets thrown around a lot, but to this day I am so impressed by this album, somehow they managed to bring in most of their different song styles, bring everything over the top in terms of complexity and somehow make it their most memorable album ever 2. Trilogy, it seems to me like it was the result of Lake genuinely having really amazing chemistry with Emerson, which didn't happen that often 3. Pictures, their rendition turns Mussorgsky's original into this insane circus-like show that was likely the most entertaining thing to ever see live, knowing about Modest's views on music, I think he would have loved it dearly 4. ELP, definitely all amazing songs, though I've always felt Lucky Man is quite disconnected from the rest of the music on the album 5. Tarkus, I have no problems with any of the songs, but it's difficult to see what connects side a with side b at all, and maybe should have ended with Oh my father instead of Are you ready Eddy 6. Works 1, Great Piano concerto, Lake side is sometimes good, sometimes really boring, Palmer side is very aimless but is saved by the Prokofiev piece and Tank, side four is some of the best material by ELP ever 7. Works 2, I really like it, I think that all of the songs are really good, but there isn't anything that unites the album as awhole 8. Apart from swapping the debut with Tarkus, my ranking is identical to yours-and I’ve never seen any other list that has the same top three in the same order as you and I do.
1.- Tarkus 2.- Brain Salad Surgery 3.- Emerson Lake & Palmer 4.- Trilogy 5.- Pictures at an Exhibition 6.- Welcome Back my Friends to the Show that Never Ends 7.- Works V1 8.- Emerson Lake & Palmer In Concert 9.- Works V2 10.- Love Beach 11.- Emerson Lake & Palmer Works Live 12.- Black Moon 13.- In the Hot Seat
Don't. Sing. Ever. That said, thanks for the stroll down memory lane. I am a diehard fan, and Brain Salad is my favorite album. As a young high school sophomore and aspiring musician, I attended a Keith Emerson presentation on synths sponsored by Moog, featuring The Monster. he even took a question from me on the future of synths, and he described emerging polyphonic setups. Saw ELP in concert three times (not enough). Thanks for your list and your thoughts.
Huh. Interesting choices, Mike. Here's my list. Unranked because I haven't heard them: In the Hot Seat; Works, Vol. 2 9. Love Beach 8. Black Moon 7. Works, Vol. 1 6. Trilogy 5. Pictures at an Exhibition 4. Emerson, Lake & Powell 3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer 2. Tarkus 1. Brain Salad Surgery
Good review and the order is almost correct if you take just the studio albums, but a pity that you skipped the live albums. "Welcome Back my friends..." (1974) and "Live at Pocono Raceway" (recorded 1972, released 2018) are among their best albums.
Surprised you ranked Black Moon so low. It's by far the most underrated album in their catalogue IMO, certainly stronger overall than Love Beach or Works vol. 2.
Dude...exactly the order I would have done. I saw ELP live in the 70s several times and patterned my drumming after Carl Palmer for a long time. I'm happy you put Trilogy high up there ..... Great band!!!!
I think Emerson's best classical music "re-do" is actually from his "The Nice" days - the Karelia Suite track. It's a live cut with an accompanying symphony orchestra from the "Five Bridges" album.
100% agree on Karn Evil 9 needing to be ready for it. I actually found Prog from Karn Evil 9. I saw that the video on youtube for it was 30 minutes long, and I was thinking "oh well, I've got nothing better to do" It was like time travel when the album finished because my brain was a flatline throughout the whole thing. I didn't really like it at first. I decided to listen to it again, and I liked it a bit more. Rinse and repeat, now I'm a prog fan. Also on Pictures at an exhibition, wasn't the Rondo live in Lyceum on there too? I know it's on their spotify album for it. That's such a good track. For me, it reminds me of Christmas, so I always listen to it in december.
I don’t think any of their albums I like totally front to back. I love Tarkus though. I like how weird the idea of taking Pictures At An Exhibition and cutting it up and arranging it and adding vocals...it’s pretty dope. Thanks for the list!
Alright, here goes: With the exception of the top 5, I found this list very easy to predict. ELP's discography (IMHO) is so top-heavy, so I kinda knew those last two albums of theirs would be on the bottom. The Emerson, Lake and Powell album was a surprise to me, though. And no "To The Power of Three" by 3 (a late 80's band featuring Emerson, Palmer and Robert Berry)? I guess not. Regardless of my opinions, this was pretty good video to watch, and I myself was wondering when it would come out. Keep up the good work!
I only listened their 70's era and a bit of ELPowell but this is my list 1.Welcome Back my Friends(and one of my fav of all time 2.Brain Salad Surgery 3.ELP 4.Trilogy 5.Works vol 1 6.Tarkus 7.Works 2 8.Love Beach I don't know where to put Pictures cause they played it a lot of times in a lot of bootlegs and I love both from the Live Álbum self titled and from their debut in Isle of Wight
Outstanding video! I agree with most of the rankings. I like Black Moon a lot. But I LOVE ELPowell! Other than Father Christmas, Pirates, and Fanfare I have little use for either Works, and Tarkus the song is the only decent part of the album. My ranking looks like this: 11. Works II 10. In The Hot Seat 9. Works I 8. Love Beach 7. Tarkus 6. Emerson Lake & Palmer 5. Black Moon 4. Pictures at an Exhibition 3. Brain Salad Surgery 2. Trilogy 1. ELPowell Let the vegetable throwing commence.....
Disclamer: While I love ELP, it occurred to me that I don't love any of their albums 100%. I have always thought of them as more of a greatest hits band. I can make a playlist and listen to it for hours. That said: 1. Self Title Debut 2. Brain Salad Surgery 3. Works, Vol. 1 4. Black Moon 5. Tarkus 6. Pictures at an Exhibition 7. Trilogy 8. Works, Vol. 2 9. Emerson Lake and Powell 10. To the Power of Three 11. In the Hot Seat 12. Love Beach
1. Pictures At An Exhibition 2. Emerson Lake Palmer 3. Brain Salad Surgery 4. Trilogy 5. Works 1 6. Tarkus 7. ELPowell 8. Works 8 9. Love Beach 10. Black Moon 11. Hot seat
I loved Pictures when I first bought it, then I went out and got the original by Mussorgsky/Ravel and the ELP version ended up in the trash. I haven't heard it since. But I still listen to other ELP albums, like Trilogy, Brain Salad and Tarkus.
Your list is the exact same as mine but I’d probably swap Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery. Nice to see someone else that thinks Pictures at an Exhibition is their best work.
1. Trilogy 2. Brain salad surgery 3. Pictures at an exhibition 4. Self titled 5. Tarkus 6. Works Vol. 1 7. Works Vol. 2 8. Love beach 9. Black moon 10. In the hot seat
Okay… I included a few that are not pure Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums. But that’s okay. Normally when a band changes members they keep the same band name. But when your band name is the last names of the members, it’s not so easy. So I’m giving this band a pass on having to change the name of the band…but keeping the vibe mostly the same. 1. Brain Salad Surgery 2. Tarkus 3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer 4. Trilogy 5. Emerson, Lake & Powell 6. Works, Vol. 1 7. Works, Vol 2 8. Pictures at an Exhibition 9. To the Power of Three (By 3) 10. Love Beach 11. Black Moon 12. In the Hot Seat
ELPowell deserves to be much higher up the list. I'd never understood why they didn't do "Mars" earlier. It was such an obvious choice. "Touch and Go" and "Learning To Fly" are amazing songs. I'd also love to know where you would have fitted "Pictures" into this list. PS: I posted this before the end of the video.
Hard to decide between Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery and Pictures at an Exhibition as to which is their best album. But at the end of the day, I'd have to say Trilogy is #1.
Nutrocker was the first song I ever heard by ELP, so Pictures at an Exhibition will always be my favorite. The next three could go in any order, with Tarkus at number five. So I agree, though if push came to shove, I would probably put Brain Salad Surgery as number two.
In my opinion they're all good just depends on my mood first concert I ever went to was Brain Salad Surgery tour .. last one Was in the Hot Seat.... I liked it ... Palmer STILL Killer !!
I had almost the same list, although nr 1, 2 and 3 can interchange, maybe I would Trilogy now on 1. For the two 'worst' albums, I don't really know them, although I would exchange Black Moon and Love Beach (side 1 of the latter was quite disapointing for me). All in all great review!
First 5 albums 1970 too 1973 are classics. Easily 9/10 or 10/10. So difficult too choose in order doh. 1. Trilogy 2. Tarkus 3. Self titled 4. Brain Salad Surgery 5. Pictures At an Exhibition
1. Tarkus 2. Pictures At an Expedition 3. ELP 1970 debut 4. Trilogy 5. Works 6. Love Beach 7. Touch and Go 8. Hot Seat 9. Works 2 10. Brain Salad Surgery ( because Bernie the Bouncer sucks) 11. Because I have never even knew of its existence and missed him saying the title
Hey man really enjoy your channel. You have a great ear for this stuff. But I must say and this is not a criticism that you had to have been there during those times. And how old were you from 69-74 when it all started to go downhill? When it was new it all hit pretty big.I was of that era and remember the Keith Emerson spinning piano on stage and the Roger Dean space pods on the Yes Close To The Edge tour and the fighting inflatable dinosaurs on the Rick Wakeman Journey to the Center of the Earth tour. These memories for me are priceless. So please put down the ukulele and pick up the 12 string guitar and reverence the Lucky Man because unlike me and probably you he had," ladies by the score, all dressed in satin, and waiting by the door." Love Beach is criminally misunderstood and I think the A side of the album is a brilliant piss take on commercial adult contemporary AOR pop music, Peter Sinfield's lyrics are crammed with so much innuendo that it is hilarious, especially considering the fact that he penned the lyrics to powerful songs like Epitaph almost a decade prior. It musically fits with the machismo Playgirl-esque album cover.

Do beatles worst to best
Don't. Sing.
My top worst to best:
9 In The Hot Seat
8 Love Beach
7 Black moon
6 Works 2
5 Works 1
4 ELP
3 Tarkus
2 Trilogy
1 Brain Salad Surgery
This dude's taste in prog are eerily similar to my dad's. They both have the same favorite Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, and Genesis albums.
that's really great
Huh. Interesting choices, Mike. Here's my list.
Unranked because I haven't heard them: In the Hot Seat; Works, Vol. 2
9. Love Beach
8. Black Moon
7. Works, Vol. 1
6. Trilogy
5. Pictures at an Exhibition
4. Emerson, Lake & Powell
3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2. Tarkus
1. Brain Salad Surgery
Garrett Hicks I highly recommend you to listen to Works Vol.2. It’s one of their best albums in my opinion!
Alright, here goes:
With the exception of the top 5, I found this list very easy to predict.
Very nice ranking! I´m currently doing a series where I review their albums in a row and rank them step by step.
Enjoyed the review. their first 5 albums are obviously the best, the real deal. very creative group.
I only listened their 70's era and a bit of ELPowell but this is my list
1.Welcome Back my Friends(and one of my fav of all time
2.Brain Salad Surgery
3.ELP
4.Trilogy
5.Works vol 1
6.Tarkus
7.Works 2
8.Love Beach
I don't know where to put Pictures cause they played it a lot of times in a lot of bootlegs and I love both from the Live Álbum self titled and from their debut in Isle of Wight
Outstanding video! I agree with most of the rankings. I like Black Moon a lot. But I LOVE ELPowell! Other than Father Christmas, Pirates, and Fanfare I have little use for either Works, and Tarkus the song is the only decent part of the album. My ranking looks like this:
11. Works II
10. In The Hot Seat
9. Works I
8. Love Beach
7. Tarkus
6. Emerson Lake & Palmer
5. Black Moon
4. Pictures at an Exhibition
3. Brain Salad Surgery
2. Trilogy
1. ELPowell
Let the vegetable throwing commence.....
I never heard of "In the Hot Seat." I guess there's a reason for that.
Disclamer: While I love ELP, it occurred to me that I don't love any of their albums 100%. I have always thought of them as more of a greatest hits band. I can make a playlist and listen to it for hours. That said:
1. Self Title Debut
2. Brain Salad Surgery
3. Works, Vol. 1
4. Black Moon
5. Tarkus
6. Pictures at an Exhibition
7. Trilogy
8. Works, Vol. 2
9. Emerson Lake and Powell
10. To the Power of Three
11. In the Hot Seat
12. Love Beach
I like your list!
I love Works Vol. 2!
John Granda That’s their most underrated album! Definetly in my top-3!
1. Pictures At An Exhibition
2. Emerson Lake Palmer
3. Brain Salad Surgery
4. Trilogy
5. Works 1
6. Tarkus
7. ELPowell
8. Works 8
9. Love Beach
10. Black Moon
11. Hot seat
I loved Pictures when I first bought it, then I went out and got the original by Mussorgsky/Ravel and the ELP version ended up in the trash. I haven't heard it since. But I still listen to other ELP albums, like Trilogy, Brain Salad and Tarkus.
It's always interesting, the order in which one is introduced to a band's work. Often the first or "original" impressions are the most cherished.
Great job! Congratulations.
Thanks a lot.
Your list is the exact same as mine but I’d probably swap Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery. Nice to see someone else that thinks Pictures at an Exhibition is their best work.
I'd put Back Moon higher up the list. BTW I was at the "Pictures" concert. I think it was my first date. Does she ever think of it?
1. Trilogy
2. Brain salad surgery
3. Pictures at an exhibition
4. Self titled
5. Tarkus
6. Works Vol. 1
7. Works Vol. 2
8. Love beach
9. Black moon
10. In the hot seat
I have faith in you that you will choose Trilogy as #1
Eh close enough
@@bubbamike4743 If we're looking at studio albums, you're not wrong :)
Yeah, Carl Palmer's side on 'Works Vol. 1' is really cool.
Okay…
I included a few that are not pure Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums. But that’s okay. Normally when a band changes members they keep the same band name. But when your band name is the last names of the members, it’s not so easy. So I’m giving this band a pass on having to change the name of the band…but keeping the vibe mostly the same.
1. Brain Salad Surgery
2. Tarkus
3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer
4. Trilogy
5. Emerson, Lake & Powell
6. Works, Vol. 1
7. Works, Vol 2
8. Pictures at an Exhibition
9. To the Power of Three (By 3)
10. Love Beach
11. Black Moon
Tbh, I love Tarkus side 2, you should listen again, The Only Way and Infinite Space are the highlights in my opinion
Nutrocker was the first song I ever heard by ELP, so Pictures at an Exhibition will always be my favorite. The next three could go in any order, with Tarkus at number five. So I agree, though if push came to shove, I would probably put Brain Salad Surgery as number two.
Damn I figured I'd find 3 (the band Emerson and Palmer formed with Robert Berry) on this list as well.
BSS...by far the best...
Best:love Beach
Slimy_the _horrible_Guitarist 👌
In my opinion they're all good just depends on my mood first concert I ever went to was Brain Salad Surgery tour
.. last one Was in the Hot Seat.... I liked it ...
Palmer STILL Killer !!
Nice VDGG in the back
20:33 I can really smell the alcohol from here
I had almost the same list, although nr 1, 2 and 3 can interchange, maybe I would Trilogy now on 1.
For the two 'worst' albums, I don't really know them, although I would exchange Black Moon and Love Beach (side 1 of the latter was quite disapointing for me). All in all great review!
1. Tarkus
2. BSS
3. Trilogy
4. ELP
5. PAAE
6. ELPowell
Take your pick for the remaining albums
First 5 albums 1970 too 1973 are classics. Easily 9/10 or 10/10. So difficult too choose in order doh.
1. Trilogy
2. Tarkus
3. Self titled
4. Brain Salad Surgery
5. Pictures At an Exhibition
Can anyone name me one track that might change my apathy about ELP? If it's a 20 minute song, please suggest beginning, middle, or end.
1. Tarkus
2. Pictures At an Expedition
3. ELP 1970 debut
4. Trilogy
5. Works
6. Love Beach
7. Touch and Go
8. Hot Seat
9. Works 2
10. Brain Salad Surgery ( because Bernie the Bouncer sucks)
11. Because I have never even knew of its existence and missed him saying the title
Also, did you realize today is three years to the day of Keith Emerson’s death? :(
I do, it's part of the reason I released it today
Hey man really enjoy your channel. You have a great ear for this stuff. But I must say and this is not a criticism that you had to have been there during those times. And how old were you from 69-74 when it all started to go downhill? When it was new it all hit pretty big.I was of that era and remember the Keith Emerson spinning piano on stage and the Roger Dean space pods on the Yes Close To The Edge tour and the fighting inflatable dinosaurs on the Rick Wakeman Journey to the Center of the Earth tour. These memories for me are priceless. So please put down the ukulele and pick up the 12 string guitar and reverence the Lucky Man because unlike me and probably you he had," ladies by the score, all dressed in satin, and waiting by the door." With that said here's my two cents worth of a list.
1. Trilogy
2. ELP
3. Brain Salad Surgery
4.Tarkus
5. Pictures at an Exhibition
YES, PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION YES
Love Beach is criminally misunderstood and I think the A side of the album is a brilliant piss take on commercial adult contemporary AOR pop music, Peter Sinfield's lyrics are crammed with so much innuendo that it is hilarious, especially considering the fact that he penned the lyrics to powerful songs like Epitaph almost a decade prior. It musically fits with the machismo Playgirl-esque album cover.
I still think In the Hot Seat can be enjoyable if you don't think of it as a ELP album.
There is no worst album from this band! But your Luckyman Intro was really very worst :)
Hi is it possible for you to do a best and worst albums from Neil Diamond
A little more tank in the- fuel?
PAAE is ALWAYS my go-to album when I'm in an ELP mood.
I was not expecting that to be your number 1 but hey still good :)
1. BSS 2. Tarkus (for side 1) 3. s/t 4. Trilogy 5. Pictures 6. who cares
Which one sounds better? Pictures the live album or live video? The video is better imo.
Greetings from Brazil!
Elp is my favorite prog rock band. has been ever since i listened to tarkus for the first time
