    Everyone who pushed the boundaries was criticized. Rolling stone hated prog rock, instead loving ho hum pop n roll boredoms like Aerosmith, Journey and all that simple shit. The talents are not even comparable - different universe. RIP. Keith and Greg-you were geniuses

    I love what Keith Emerson replied when asked about being musically self indulgent and pretentious. He said that what some people call pretentious I call ambitious.

    3:39 Talk about having a "face with a view." Greg was utterly gorgeous!!
    HOWEVER, Greg is edging the truth just a bit when he claims that ELP never
    did any acts of destructive mischief while on tour. On at least one occasion
    Greg had "a bit of fun" wrecking a hotel suite with a coca cola bottle! I've
    as yet to encounter a "name" band that didn't have "a bit of fun" while on tour
    on at least a few occasions.

    It was mostly written by music journalists that ELP were pretentious and pompous, but the same journalists were praising Pink Floyd for their great live shows.
    Ridiculous!
    I guess the main reason for that BS was the fact that ELP had no guitar player - if you consider Greg as a bass player. And their music was too ambitious and overstrained the musical knowledge of these bastards.

      @The Terrence Reardon Podcast It wasn´t only ELP´s live shows that were called megalomanic, it was their music as well that was called pompous, pretentious and pathetic. And there´s a smple reason for that: the so called music critics had no clue about music. That´s why they loved and still love simple songs like those by Springsteen, Dylan or the entire blues stuff whereas - for example - Tarkus was overstraining their abilities. And secondly they always had and still have probs to accept a band without a guitar in it´s line-up. You can put a zillion guitars and no keyboard on stage, that´s ok, but no guitar is like a no-go to them. They will always applaude to a boring 10 minute solo by Clapton and say that a brilliant 2 minute solo by Emerson is too long and just a display of meaningless virtuosity.

    At the same time Pink Floyd set up a huge show - or the Stones or whatever. The difference was: ELP made ambitious progrock without a guitar - mostly without - and that made them outstanding and somehow not acceptable for most journalists. Those critical journalists were the same who welcomed punk music and all that crap, but that was political correct music as it was not high culture and there were guitars involved.

    When you look at what ELP did compared to what they do today, they really worked on the music. The music was good, the presentation was simple and raw. Today, it just seems like there is nothing to the music, they music is a necessary evil to sell the necessary evil of rebellion and criminality in kids to make sure they are outside of the political reality of America and just banging around taking drugs, having sex, now being gay, or otherwise just being completely confused. What a miserable time for kids to grow up in today. Whatever ELP was they made some really cool music. Today, looking back a lot of it was never really finished, it is slipshod, but the basic structure and format was really good. After Brain Salad Surgery I think they all got brain damage from too much excess, too many drugs and alienating experiences because they only thing of not they did was Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" which is terrific.

    • @IwshIcldstrtover
      @IwshIcldstrtover 9 років тому +9

      ELP as a whole, didn't do drugs. Greg smoked pot from what I've read, and after Keith lost his home to a fire, he used cocaine, but Carl Palmer didn't even drink beer! He hates the stuff, so I don't know from where you are getting your information. As for your comment regarding what kids are doing nowadays, it's spot on, and it is the reason society is a total disaster!

      When was this that he did? *If* he did, according to Keith and Greg, they never did drugs while performing, and as hyper active as Carl is naturally, I think he would be a basket case taking that stuff. I've never used drugs, but have read enough to know that that stuff gives your more energy and so forth.

      Im pretty sure that in the 70s drugs were par for the course in the music business ie freely available and that rock musicians indulged sometimes to excess.
      They are also dangerous. Whether or not CP took substances - who cares ? It was over 30 yrs ago.

    I loved the amazing spectacle of ELP, as,well as their brilliant sounds. There were a few po-faced DJs and journalists around that slammed their fun-filled shows, and would have preferred us to spend our money watching miserable, expressionless pseuds, thrashing out a few chords and boring the a*s*s of everyone.

      Congratulations Douglas. You are the hands-down winner of the most moronic comment on music I've ever heard. Are we talking about the same kiss? The guys with the painted clown faces? Kiss were the most commercial band on the planet. Let's see you have the cartoons, the comic strips, the kiss toys, the Kiss Pinball Machine oh, I think they even made kiss vitamins. Hahaha you have got to be kidding me. You used the word Progressive so I assume you mean progressive rock. Do you even have any idea what progressive rock is? You know the kind of music with complex time signatures, rhythmic structures and musicianship that is most the time on the level of classically trained musicians. Kiss were a children's band my friend. I remember in the early 70s which was probably before you were born seeing Rush open up for Kiss which is the only reason I went to the concert plus it was free. The kiss fans were being brought to the concert by their mommies and daddies. As soon as Rush finished their set over half of the audience left leaving nothing but small children and their parents. This comment just has to be a joke. Either that or you are a kid that's just not familiar with music. Or you're an adult that is borderline retarded. Hahaha. Now Emerson Lake and Palmer or about as non-commercial As It Gets. Furthermore they were considered the standard of musicianship that other bands were judged by back then. On the other hand kisses musicianship was laughable pretty much on the level with the monkeys and the New York Dolls. I guess I only have one question why are you even watching this video?

  • @tarbuck1

    Carl was and still is a good drummer and the appropriate drummer for ELP and he interviews well, but even myself as an ELP fan realises that his drumming skills are nowhere near those of the true great drummers like Joe, Buddy, Neil (Rush), Bonham and Paice and also Bruford.
    Carl was in the right place at the right time when he met Keith and Greg.

    • @panzerken
      @panzerken 9 років тому +14

      Not so fast. Carl has some serious Rudimental chops. Much more than Boham or Peart. Check out some of his solos on UA-cam. And who is Joe?

      +ticktack1 Not so sure about that. Carl was not a great groove drummer but he made up for that with speed and stamina. Not to mention his showmanship. He was actually endorsed by Buddy Rich as a great drummer. I think that says a lot. Of course, music is subjective anyway.

    • @tarbuck1
      @tarbuck1 9 років тому +1

      +mattc060793 agreed. I've always liked ELP and Palmer is fast but maybe not as 3 dimensional as some of the others. However Carl has a big personality and did keep the band together when Keith and Greg had disagreements.

    • @matthewstetson711
      @matthewstetson711 8 років тому +2

      +mattc060793 Don't play but I always appreciated Palmer's playing. The idea that the Who considered him as Moon's replacement is to me a bad one since CP's style is tight, fast and strong but I never thought of it as particularly powerful. Certainly not lightweight of course. He indeed had great stamina, Sidepoint, Kenny Jones isn't powerful either but outside Zac Starkey, none was a better replacement there. Loved Palmer's use of the cowbell and he sounds best as a non-obtrusive drummer (session-like) on the Jeremy Bender/The Sheriff Medley. ELP was a great band when rock 'n roll got away from being rock 'n roll and was figuring out the next steps.
