  • In the early 20th century automat restaurants were thought of as the future. By the 1970s they had all but died out. Now Taco Bell is experimenting with automat-style cubbies and a dumpling shop in New York is aiming to reinvent the idea entirely. (May 6)

Great idea, but I just hope it keeps the core principal of the automat: quick, affordable eats for anyone in any budget (and no need to tip!)

This is not quite a traditional automat experience. These are just made-to-go orders being put into a storage slot, and it looks like expensive, fancy food. A real automat has full meals already waiting in those slots, and it's usually something that feels basic, like meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. It's supposed to be something you can eat at frequently and consider a legitimate, nutritious meal.

It costs about the same as an automat did in the old days, adjusted for inflation. In today's money, a 1950's dime would be $10-20.

The original Horn & Hardart Automats were an early-to-mid 20th century gem. Nothing new and modern can approach its charm. If you want to see one of these Horn & Hardart Automats in action, watch the 1962 movie "That Touch of Mink" with Carey Grant and Doris Day.

It's not just the food. It's the fickle American customer too. If it had been up to me, original automats would've never gone out of business. They provided tasty cafeteria food resembling home-cooked meals, which is much better for you than fast food eateries that replaced automats. Even cafeterias are dwindling in America.

So what hes trying to say is
That by making some business automated it lowers cost of employment for those are not as they dont have to compete with others for wages..
Example in ohio we have sheetz. They pay on average a starting wage of 17 an hour. Where as truenorth (shell) pays 13. Often when sheetz open the gas stations on opposite corners close because their employees go to sheetz.
