  • Krik of Black Owl Outdoors shows off a piece of his newest leather creations, an oil tanned leather belt pouch. Sized just big enough for an Altoids tin and two trust Bic lighters, the classic looking belt pouch is actually a blending of multiple types of leather. Krik used an oil tanned leather for the majority of the pouch, along with varying weights of veg tanned leather for accents and support.

    I love it man, I've been itching to make my own gear for ages but never find the time. I did recently buy a heavy duty nylon pouch (heavier than typical military pouches) that is pretty much the exact same dimensions as yours, possibly a tad smaller. For the last month or so I've been using it to every day belt carry a Leatherman Surge w/extra jigsaw wood blade, hacksaw blade & file, mini bic lighter, AA Zebra light w/paracord head torch loop, spare AA battery and Fisher pen cartridge as minimalist spare pen. It's great having these items together without being too weird or bulky to wear on the belt.

    Very nice. Love the contrast in colors. I want to make components similar to your pouch that cover the 5 Cs. No backpack.

    I'm just getting started in knife making, using Old Hickory knives. Also got some leather tools so I can make sheaths for the knives. pretty fun so far.

    I'm about to attempt doing my first knife handle and kydex work! Done some basic leather work (inspired by your videos) such as axe guards and danglers and recently completed a set of firesteels (photos on my instagram). Love making things that have a practical use and a good aesthetic! Lovely work on the pouch Krik, all the best Tom.

      +Black Owl Outdoors I'll make a video when I've finished it (if of course I am happy with it). Its a small scandi blade blank by a british knife maker and I'm planning to make Bog Oak scales with white liners. Hopefully it works as I'm new to DIY tools hahaha. Looking foward to more Black Owl Videos. Tom.

    Nice stuff, I'm a tinkering and crafting kind of guy. I've never made anything out of leather but I would loveee to now. I'm gonna have a workbench and shop in my new home I'm moving into in a couple days. I'd love to see more videos like this, and maybe the process of making such items. Keep up the great work.

    Seriously perfect side pouch! Good job mate! I would love to make one for myself. I’m a disabled American and just starting out making leather items. My doctors say it would be a good hobby for me since they also say I will never work again and I’m going stir crazy lol. Do you ever make videos on how to make things like that? I don’t have a clue lol how to go about making something like that. I’m still figuring out what tools and stuff I need to get started. Really good job it’s perfect.

    This is really awesome. You are talented. I just made a leather 5" ferrod holder and a haversack out of sheep skin. My first two DYI leather projects. Its doesn't look as cool as your bag. I might shoot a video of it but I'm not into making videos. Thanks. I subbed

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  9 років тому

      +Far East Survival No worries man. Thanks for sharing. I have yet to make a haversack. But I hope to if I can find the right (and cheap!) leather.

    • @FarEastSurvival
      @FarEastSurvival 9 років тому

      I purchased a piece from Amazon from the seller: REED© LEATHER HIDES - WHOLE SHEEP SKIN 7 to 10 SF - Various Colors. It was for sale $35. It is a bit thin and had a couple of tiny holes but it was big enough to make a haversack. Sheep skin is really soft and the bag is surprisingly lightweight. I dont think it'll hold a ton of gear but, 5 to 10lbs shouldn't be a problem so it should be fine for a day hike. I ordered some other stuff to make the shoulder strap and once I finish making it, I'll upload a video of it.

      +joking78 You're right, we have to start somewhere. Learn the basics of construction and durability first. Then you can experiment with design. Don't compare your work to anyone else's at first either. Just have fun and use what you create! -Krik
