A piece of trivia / tearjerker: "the guy that died" (54:00) in the cinematic was not Matt Horner, the captain of the battlecruiser. The identification tag read: "M. Koiter", for Michel Koiter (3 May 1984 - 18 March 2004), a Blizzard artist who died from heart failure at the age of 19.
He also has a tribute in World of Warcraft, as I believe he worked on it. There is a hill in The Barrens zone (now Northern Barrens) with a spirit healer named 'Koiter'. You used to only be able to see it when you were dead, but they changed that. Anyone can see him now.
Some of these cinematic show alternate story paths - like with the female scientist, you can choose to help her or to help the protoss. If you help her, you get the cutscene with her thanking Raynor. If you help the protoss, you get the cutscene with the scientist being infested and Raynor being forced to kill her. These deviations don't affect the ultimate outcome of the story, just something to keep in mind.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Don't quote me on this information, but I had heard that the name on the dog tag at 45:03 was the name of a Starcraft Tournament winner... Or the winner of a contest. One of the two. I could be wrong, so if you want to fact check it that would be up to you. Either way I felt it worth mentioning.
Honestly I still hold that Tychus intentionally hesitated knowing Jim would shoot him, as he'd rather be taken out by his friend than a son of a bitch like Mengsk lightyears away with a remote kill switch. Some context for the last cinematic, is that the Xel'Naga Artifact basically de-infested Kerrigan as the last mission is basically holding out long enough to charge and activate the artifact, all the while the Zerg and the Queen of Blades is trying to overrun you. Also Valerian is fortunately a better man than his father, he isn't perfect, no one in the Koprulu Sector is but he's definitely not his father.
Oh Tychus definitely hesitated so that Jim could take him out. Or at least to give Jim a chance to do it. There didn’t need to be that long drawn out moment. Tychus could’ve snuck in and just pulled the trigger quick without saying a word. But like you said, better to have Jim take him out if he thinks Kerrigan is worth saving 🥲
IIRC (it's been a long time) Kerrigan being de-infested is a really, really big deal. Not just because it's the Queen of Blades, but because it's never been done before.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Tychus can't just leave, his suit have a explosive devise implanted and Mengsk have the trigger. And nothing on Mengsk's history can prove if he are going to respect his deal. So dying by the hand of a friend or by the hand of a a**hole ?
Unlike the two next starcraft 2 videos you'll watch, this one has a few variables in it. Specifically, the two cinematics at 12.30 and 13.45 with the doctor woman (Ariel Hanson) comes from a variable in-game choice. You can either choose to protect her people and she will take her leave on good terms (this is the canonical choice) OR you can choose to purge her colony of infected, which leads her down a path of self-experimentation and she ends up a mutated zerg creature Jim has to put down (this does not "officially" happen.) Also take note of the device Zeratul gave to Jim when he appeared and "bring tidings of doom", and notice that the same device is in the lab when Jim kills Hanson. If you kill Hanson BEFORE you get that device, it will not be present in the cinematic, which is a fairly cool attention to detail. The next "choice" cinematics come at 17.45 and 20.08, where we see Jim, Horner and Tosh in the first one, with the addition of Nova in the second. In the first of these two, Jim helps Tosh free Tosh's friends (Spectres) from New Folsom prison (along with all the other prisoners), while in the second cinematic Jim instead helps Tosh's rival Nova believing her when she says Tosh is evil, and Nova assassinates Tosh. Again, the first of these two cinematics is the canonincally correct choice, so Tosh does not get assassinated by Nova and instead joins Jim and Matt for the rest of Starcraft 2. Oh and about the marine power armor? Yeah you "do your business" inside it. I want to say I'm not fully satisfied with the order of these cinematics but there's no real "right" order in Wings of Liberty because the entire campaign is open and free-form, you pick and choose missions as you please. With the Zerg and Protoss campaigns the story is more ordered and organized. The reason they feel disjointed is not because of the order, but rather missing context of what happens between them and the whole Wings of Liberty campaign because of its freeform nature is naturally given to chaos. With the Zeratul vs Kerrigan cinematic, this is a "flashback" which Jim can witness if he uses the device Zeratul gives him. Zeratul and Kerrigan fought on a distant world, and then after that Zeratul saw the full prophecy and realized Kerrigan needs to live. So the story with Tychus is something you only find out in-between missions. Matt doesn't trust Tychus at all, so he does lots of things like discovering Tychus in the database hacking into the ships computers and most importantly Matt figures out the suit that Tychus gets put into at the start is a literal prison. With the flick of a switch, Arcturus can shut down all of Tychus' major organs. Heart, lungs, brain, killing him instantly. Neither Matt nor Jim finds out who holds the trigger though, Tychus lies and says the Moebius Organization is the ones who hold the cards, which would mean its Valerian Mengsk, not Arcturus. Arcturus here plays 5D chess while everyone else is playing checkers, sending Tychus to help Jim because at some point he'll be able to use Tychus for some powerplay. In the meantime he's ok with sacrificing whatever needs to be sacrificed to keep Tychus in play. Most prominently, Tychus is the reason for that one cutscene with Mengsk being interrogated by journalists, basically he's the one who piloted the supermech we use to make it happen. And no, the guy who died in one of the final cinematics was not Matt Horner. Michel Koiter was an artist working at Blizzard who died from heart failure in 2004, and so he was honored in the cinematic.
Didn't know about Koiter. Cool that they put that in there. Absolutely loved Tychus' lines through the campaign too. "The natives are getting restless" is by far my favorite. XD Anyway, good way to sum it up. I came down to the comments to explain to find you covered pretty much everything I wanted to. XD
Thanks so much for going into more detail on this for us! And we could see Matt not trusting Tychus and he was spot on about that. Would’ve been cool to see him uncover the truth. We didn’t need all the moments invetween. But some small ones here and there to maybe make it 5-10 minutes longer would’ve really tied this together nicely 😊☺️ Still had fun watching it 🤠
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames yeah that’s the issue with watching only the cinematics. There’s lots of story that is found by talking with characters on your ship in between missions and lots of story within the missions themselves.
Tychus is my favorite character from SC2, Too bad he aint got no choice in the game cuz his suit have an "Kill-Switch" so he had no choice but to follow certain orders.
That’s the one thing we wish we knew that was left out. That and the fact that Matt was still alive. Other than that this was pretty well done for just cutscenes 😀🤠🥳
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames That to me is a huge plothole, because Jim finds out about the killswitch through Matt while they are still on the ship, way before the invasion of Char. It gets mentioned in that particular cutscene, and then Jim never asks about it or mention it again. One would think he would either ask Tychus or find a way to either jam it, or dismantle it mechanically after he finds out about it - obviously electricity affects the suit atleast.
@@NafanuaisMYnick The way they explain the kill switch it's likely that trying to disconnect it will set it off and kill Tychus anyway. Jim likely doesn't push the subject in case he pushes Tychus into a situation where he risks setting it off.
I feel like the Wings of Liberty campaign is all about choices, the ones you make vs the ones you don’t. Great sci-fi western. Heart of the Swarm definitely has more of the Empire Strikes Back vibe. While Legacy of the Void is like Avengers Endgame “whatever it takes” kind of feel.
Ahhh ... my first game where I bought books to find out more about the story behind it. I'm not exactly a bookworm, but i made an exception for that game and i was not disappointed. :)
I always loved the Terrans in starcraft. They're basically memetic american south stereotypes set in space Australia. I just love that cultural image. Heck tp drive the point home even harder the predecessor to the Terran Dominion was the Terran Confederacy, an elitist, tyranical oligarchy led by old family aristocracy complete with a stylised "Stars and Bars" type flag. Edited for clarity.
@KarSoban yeah that's one of the reasons why I always had mixed feelings on the UED, because one, Earth is the Homeworld afterall, and two, they kicked everyone's ass using local terran gear only to be crippled by infighting and then dog piled by everybody else (rightfully so mind you, I wouldn't of wanted them to try to maximus deletus the terrans again, space nazis what ya gonna do🤷 ) But hey they gave us space rednecks in space Australia🤣

23:00 Arcturus had personal reasons to leave Kerrigan on Tarsonis. She, like Nova you saw in 2nd Tosh cinematic with voodoo doll was part of Ghost program - specialized assassins and espionage masters with some psionic capabilities (mind/emotion reading, suggestion powers, some 6th sense and extended awareness of surroundings). Core of the program was that after each mission their memories were wiped and reset and some mental conditioning and brainwashing was added. Arcturus was a member of prominent family ruling one of Terran Confederacy worlds - Korhal IV. As Confederacy was tyrannical regime, due to some events Korhal IV rebelled at one point and Arcturus family were the leaders. Arcturus family members (his father leading rebels, mother and younger sister) were ordered to be killed by 3 Ghosts. One of those Ghosts was none other than Sarah Kerrigan. Kerrigan was the one who specifically killed father of Arcturus, decapitated him and took his head. Arcturus was at that time on another planet and survived. After killings he took over leadership from his dead father. 2 years later to show example Confederacy decided to nuke whole planet into oblivion killing everyone there. Arcturus was able to escape nuclear destruction and with few other survivors he established pirate group Sons of Korhal. During one of their raids Sons of Korhal raided one of Ghost facilities where Kerrigan was being held to study her psionic powers and controlling Zerg. He rescued her as he saw her to be great asset to be added to his pirates. I don't remember if Arcturus at that point already knew that Kerrigan was one who killed his father or if he got that knowledge from files discovered during raid. Later in course of Starcraft 1 Sons of Korhal and Arcturus with help of Jim Raynor (and player) were able to abolish Confederacy and establish Arcturus as Emperor of Terran Dominum. Just before end of campaign Tarsonis was destroyed by Zerg lured by PSI beacon planted by Kerrigan on Arcturus orders. At the end of mission Arcturus left Kerrigan on Tarsonis, so that she would be killed by Zerg as his little vendetta for killing his family (I guess fact that Ghosts were brainwashed and had their memory wiped didn't matter to him.). After this act Jim, who started to have pretty serious mutual feelings with Kerrigan, left Arcturus side and created his own small rebel group against Mengsk. As we all now know, it backfired a little, because Overmind, the being governing Zerg at that time, saw psionic potential in Kerrigan and decided to get her into the swarm through infestation as its agent. We later get to know during all 3 campaigns of Starcraft 2 the real reason why she was chosen.
Okay. That makes more sense as to the reasoning. I mean, we still don’t like the guy and want him to get it in the end (or sooner) but at least we understand more 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames The scariest thing about Arcturus and the entire Mengsk family line is their innate charisma. They're extremely good at using words as tools to get what they want. Arcturus' father Angus Mengsk incited the rebellion of a Core World against the Confederacy. The confederacy held 13 core worlds and an abundance of outlying fringe worlds, but the Core Worlds were sacred things, lead by the Old Families, the supposed nobility that ruled the Confederacy. The Mengsk family was one of those Old Families, along with several others such as the Dukes, Terras, Tygores, Calabas and Kusinis. Each of these families are descendants of the original commanders of the prison ship that brough the Terrans to the Koprulu Sector. Keep in mind, those ships were prison ships, so the commanders were effectively also prison guards and wardens. The Old Families are all descendants of one single vessel, the Nagglfar which was also the "main" ship the other three were slaved to follow due to its unique navigation control systems aboard Nagglfar. One of the remaining four, Argo, landed on Moria, a planet incredibly rich in resources (which the Confederacy coveted, which in turn lead to the infamous Guild Wars that ended about 10 years before SC1, Jim and Tychus fought together in that war). Moria became home to the Kel-Morian Combine, an alliance of mining guilds who had near constant skirmish against one another despite being allied. Lots of subterfuge and contract-obligated warfare, money is the only important thing to them. The last two, Serengo and Reagan, landed on Umoja. Saying landed is a bit of a misnomer for one of them. The Serengo crashlanded so hard it created a canyon on the planet and every person aboard died. However despite this, Umoja came off much better than most, because the remains of the ship were still salvageable, giving Umojan descendants a leg up on their two rival terran groups. Umoja is also where Valerian Mengsk was raised, as Arcturus Mengsk had a child with the Umojan princess and kept his son sequestered away in the Umojan Protectorate while he was campaigning against the Confederacy to ensure his family couldn't be taken hostage or killed by Confederate ghosts. This is also why he was away from his father when Angus got assassinated, by the way, to meet with her.
I thought Arcturus simply left Kerrigan there to die because she was the only one who knew that Arcturus was behind the zerg invasion of the planet and the billions that died because of it, as he kind of used them as a biological weapon to wipe out the confederacy.
@@Klaital1 not really. Same thing with luring Zerg was done eaerlier on Antiga Prime and Jim was fully aware of that. So there were more people, who knew about it. Originally it planned to be shown as Jim with Edmund Duke, who planted PSI Emitters on surface of Tarsonis, while Kerrigan was holding off Protoss. But mission was scrapped and never reached full release of game. Unfinished product can be found in SC1 beta disc circulating Internet or as exctracted and converted file by community to work with modern SC. Oh, I also forgot to mention earlier - Tarsonis was capital world of Confederacy. Also parts of that story were further retconned in SC2, as New Getysburg was originally one of orbital platforms defending Tarsonis, but in SC2 they changed it into one of sectors on planet surface where Zerg landed. Which is a little dumb and cotradicts some parts of lore, because originally Protoss just used their capital ships to cleanse planets of Zerg infestation - oceans evaporated, upper layers of crust melted and planet was stripped of atmosphere, leaving dead rock. It happened to Chau Sara, Mar Sara and Antiga Prime. And battle in space around Tarsonis lead by Kerrigan prevented same fate for Tarosnis. Instead Zerg did the job there. So why would Protoss land on surface, when they could have just used their capital ships again? Also in SC2, which takes place 5 years after events of SC1, Mar Sara is perfectly fine.
I am so happy that new people are still taking a interest in the StarCraft franchise. Honestly one of the best games with storytelling, gameplay, and community.
Matt is still alive just a ton of missing cutscenes with the Protoss and uhhh Matt's story line. Honestly Matt felt plain but eventually due to Matt's persistent story line, even in Co-op missions, it grew on me.
That ending hits different after some of the books, Tychus and Raynor were besties. They met in the military, eventually went AWOL together and became space cowboys robbin trains and other such shenanigans. But when the law finally caught up to them Tychus was imprisoned because he gave Raynor the one way out, even tho his mantra always was hed never sacrifice himself for anyone. But he was damned if he did or didnt in the end, his suit was ready to give him a lethal injection if he didnt kill Kerrigan.
See the suit killing Tychus is a part we wish we knew. Because then it makes him less selfish than “I don’t want to go to prison again”. Sad that it came to that but some damn good storytelling 😊🥲
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Yeah not sure why some cinematics were cut from the video you guys watched. The one scene where this is explained goes like this (from StarCraft Wiki): Horner: "Sir, when Tychus came back aboard the ship, I had the techs run a scan on him." Raynor: "Matt, you need to get a hobby." Horner: "Seriously Sir -- his suit contains a sophisticated transponder... if it receives the correct code, it'll shut down all his major organs. That suit is a death trap." Raynor: "He's got a gun to his head." Horner: "And who's got their finger on the trigger? Moebius?" Raynor: "Tychus, what have you gotten yourself into?"
Quoting Tycus, “Hell it’s about time”. Also word of advice, Most of the stories especially for Heart of the Swarm happens in between gameplay and missions. If I’m not mistaken there’s a full video version which includes those scenes and incorporate them like a movie.
35:36 The Protoss wield Psi-Blades, basically they make a blade out of energy by sheer willpower and focus, it cuts and burns like a lightsabre but that's the only similarity. 49:29 During the campaign Matt finds out that Tychus' combat suit is linked to his vital systems, basically Mensk has a "gun to his head" if he doesn't follow his order to kill Kerrigan, the suit will kill him.
@@vahdoom Yea good job fam, my bad, i thought confirming a death would be what people consider a huge spoiler. Dont mind me though, keep rocking, posi vibes
@@vahdoom ofc my bad, spoilers dont rly count for bad guys because all die 5head only good guys that dont necessarily die have spoilers, so stupid of me, as stupid as thinking that confirming a fate similar to a bullet to the head meant death, heh, cn u imagine someone thinking that!
First off, I’m really enjoying your reactions, it feels great to see someone experience games that I’ve loved! Second, I wanted to clarify an important plot point that was mostly missed in your viewings and so far in the comments. Zeratul gives Raynor that device to view his experiences. As people mentioned when Zeratul fights Kerrigan in that dark cave that’s a flashback from the device. But there’s a lot more info that is given too. After that spat Zeratul learns more about the prophecy he keeps mentioning, and because of it he goes back to their home world Aiur and to the corpse of the Overmind (the old hive-mind of the Zerg). He probes its memories and runs into the spirit of Tassadar (the guy who crashed his ship into the overmind to kill it in the first game, although there are some shinanigans with this spirit that will come to light later) who tells Zeratul that the overmind was created by the Xel’Naga without free will and with one purpose, to destroy and infest the Protoss. But it exploited a loophole and created Kerrigan, who could be free from the enslavement of the Xel’Naga once the Overmind died. This is important because the Xel’Naga are coming and if they control the Zerg then the hopes of the galaxy are doomed. Zeratul finishes this little exposition with a glimpse of the future if Kerrigan is killed. In this vision the Protoss stand alone after the rest of the galaxy has gone dark. The combined forces of the Zerg and the Xel’Naga slowly overtake their defenses and succeed in destroying the Protoss too. Basically Kerrigan needs to live so she can turn the Zerg against the Xel’Naga and give the galaxy a fighting chance.
Sarah Kerrigan was originally a human Ghost, like Nova; the red head we saw in that other clip, that was h we r. But the point of this game, was to assemble all the pieces of that Artifact, and purge the Zerg from her. Shame it couldn't last, but she has a bigger part to play; you'll see in act two: Heart of the Swarm.
45:02 - that Dog Tag for M. Koiter - was one of the artists at Blizzard who sadly passed at the age of 19 from heart failure - this was their memorial for him.
Gotta be one of the best space westerns. Tychus was a cool character, but yeah he was a goner no matter which way he had went. The suit would have killed him had he failed to kill Kerrigan, so being worthy of Raynors final revolver bullet seems like a better way to go out.
Bet even if he killed Kerrigan Mengsk would’ve still killed him or kept him on a leash to do his bidding so best that Jim did what he did unfortunately 😢
Hey you two! Really nice reaction, especially the "fix ma' damn jukebox"; it was hilarious! :) I know some of the stuff was explained by other people but here are some facts that may or may not help, spoiler free (hopefully :)): - in the opening scene you witness pretty much how the terran marines are "formed". they are normal people (unlike the warhammer universe) in thicc armor and they can be government sanctioned units, local militias, ordinary soldiers but some can also be like our Tychus here: pirates, traitors etc. - Jim Raynor and Tychus's friendship has roots way back in the original Starcraft timeline. Tychus was a staff sergeant back then, but he done goofed and got demoted to sergeant that's when he met Jim. They became friends (or more like partners) and start robbing trains for starters. Funny enough, Jim found a jukebox on one of the trains they robbed and he said he got to have it. I don't know if it's the same jukebox in here but it's a cool easter-egg. :) - at 16:40 Jim meets Zeratul. One of the most iconic hero of the entire Starcraft universe and also one of the most loved by the fans. He is a protoss (probably it was obvious). Here are some details about protoss as a race, it has nothing to do with spoilers, it was explained back in the originals. The protoss is one of the most ancient race in the universe. Their origin is from planet Aiur and yes, they are telekinetic/telepathic beings (they also have no mouth :)). Their main religion is the Khala, where their every thought and emotion is stored and they are linked together thanks to their long braids called "nerve cords"; but some of the protoss rejected this religion and became the Nerazim or the "dark templar". In our case here, Zeratul has his nerve cords severed so, he is a dark templar. The Khala followers have their psionic blades (light sabers :)) blue and the dark templar green. There are many other protoss cults out there, but for the sake of spoilers i won't mention any of them, but their blades colors are different as well. EDIT: you will learn more about the protoss later on but, the "StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void - Reclamation", which is an official short, explains pretty much their history and what are they all about. - There is nothing much to say about Sarah in order for you to understand what happened to her, the trailer did a good job explaining her betrayal which took place back in the original Starcraft. She was a confederate ghost. Ghosts are covert operatives, humans with psionic powers that can cloak themselves, read minds and do all sort of weird stuff hence why they were trained mostly in the art of infiltration and assassination. They were trained from infancy to harness psionic powers and they were also chosen from psychically gifted individuals by the Terran Confederacy. At 21:04 you see Tosh who is a rogue ghost that made his own "entourage" and his killer, Nova; a ghost just like Kerrigan was back in the days. Nova has a cool story too but it is not that well presented in the game, although she has a separate campaign from the Starcraft 2 dedicated entirely to her character. She is very interesting and i think you would like her a lot. She is nasty :) - As for Mengsk, he is an a-hole :) although "thanks" to him, Jim and Kerrigan met each other during Mengsk's revolutionary campaign against the Terran Confederancy. Yes, they both "worked" with Mengsk back in the day. Jim and Sarah were also very contradictory to each other until Jimmy here, broke the ice and asked Sarah out expressing his true feelings towards her. What happened on Tarsonis nobody expected at that time: After successfully defeating the Confederacy, Mengsk ordered the soldiers to plant psi-emitters that would lure the xenomorphs (the zerg) to Tarsonis; Billions of zerg were lured to that place laying waste to the remaining Confederacy defences and soon after, the protoss followed and attacked the zerg, so the whole scene became a global war between races; the aftermath is seen here in the Kerrigan's cinematic. There are more things to be added but i think these were some pretty interesting "details". I can't wait for the Heart of the Swarm reaction, it is a bit longer but the story gets better and better; i think it will keep you two captivated! Cheers!
Nova is definitely someone that interests us you know our type 😉😁 And appreciate you filling in the gaps for the story for us and explaining it better 🥳
The tags in that one scene is a random marine. I think the point was that he was kind of a representation for 'we're doing this for those that didn't make it' kind of thing. Matt's definitely still alive, and you'll see him when you continue on in Heart of the Swarm, the next expansion to StarCraft 2. Also, Tychus is definitely dead.
Correction: in the tag there -- most definitely not a "random" marine. Check out Michel Koiter, of Michel and René Koiter's Twincruiser, an artist duo for Blizzard Entertainment and the Sons of the Storm. It's a somewhat easter-egg nod of appreciation.
R.I.P. Tychus. We figured he was. And glad Matt is still alive. We weren’t sure what we missed inbetween the scenes but the message of we are doing this for those that didn’t make it is still nice ☺️
29:06 after replaying the og Terran campaign of StarCraft1, he said this to Raynor as a part of a conversarion they had *AFTER* he left Kerrigan to die in New Getysburg
I feel like you'd also need to see the mission briefings to really understand all that's going on. Maybe even some of the ingame dialogue cuts during the missions. But seeing the cut scenes alone is already a great ride :)
YAY! So glad you watched this! @2:45, so the suits have the ability for them to piss and other body functions... @3:42, Yes, they add decals to their own suits, similar to have US Army painted their own planes during WW2. @4:08 Bless you @23:45 its a flashback to when Kerrigan gets left beyond to be taken over my the Zerg which was referenced in the first video you watched, which happened in the game starcraft. Starcraft has 5 games, Starcraft, Starcraft Broodwars, Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty, Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm, and Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void. @38:47, Zeratul wasn't trying to kill her but to stop her from trying to kill him since they need each other for the future story/Prophecy @47:27 That's the name of a Blizzard employee who died during the development of the game so Blizzard added his name into the game as a Dogtag. Random fact: During the Wings of Liberty promotion, you got a dog tag if you bought a collectors edition to the game.
Here's a fun fact for you: that dogtag Jim Raynor picked up is actually from a player...who i think passed away. So they dedicated his name onto that tag o3o
Love Starcraft Lore . -To make things more understandable I'll give you guys a back story Tychus Fidlay was working with Jim Raynor this whole time and before , they got cough and Tychus took all the blame on himself he did not rat out Jim. His a loyal friend of Jim , but when you are a criminal everyone for themselves in a way. After Tychus was imprisoned they offered him a deal , to kill Kerrigan and go Free or rot in prison. (By the way the armor he had was self destructive so if he would have disobeyed the order , Arcturus Mengskwould would have ordered to have him killed , so he had a choice , him or Kerrigan.) On the other hand Zeratul (The alian) Told Jim the whole life existence rests on Kerrigan survival ! (That's why it made it was a hard choice for him to make as well) And Jim had to choice to make the whole existence of life or Tychus Fidlay his friend . A really hard choices there . Heart breaking.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I think Jim Wanted her dead from get go and Manks , but since Zeratul came in and told him she must be alive , he have hope to bring her back , that's what turned the tables . Specially when he seen her in "Human appearance" so he has hope to bring her back to normal.
The cinematic at 35:00 is a vision given to Jim in that shard at 17:15. The shard basically carries some of Zeratul's memories of what he learned. The cinematic at 35:00 is one of those visions, Zeratul hadn't learned about Kerrigans importance until after his fight with her. As for the weapon that Zeratul used, they're called Psi-blades (or Warp Blades if the protoss is a Dark Templar). It's kinda like a lightsaber, except instead of using a specific crytal to power the blade, the users psionic power is what fuels it. Basically, the Starcraft universe is very similar to the Warhammer 40k universe. I think it was rumored that the original Starcraft game was supposed to be a Warhammer 40k game. If not, it's heavily influenced by Warhammer 40k. As for Tychus at the end, I think it was implied that either Kerrigan died, or he would be killed by his own suit. Also, if you like game music, might want to check out the Starcraft 2 Terran music
If I'm remembering correctly, there's a crystal used in psi-blades that protoss warriors will focus their psionic energy through. Similar principle to irl laser, if I'm not mistaken
So as to why Raynor killed Tychus instead of knocking him out like you said, in between the cutscenes during the downtime in game where you can talk to a bunch of the characters before missions Raynor finds out that Tychus' Suit is set to kill him if it gets the right signal which in this case is if Mengks decides he fucked up and didn't kill Kerrigan so at least in my mind Raynor just thought he's dead either way might as well be the one to kill him instead of Mengks. Also the dog tag that Raynor picked up during his speech is not Matt's it is a tribute to a blizzard artists who died of heart failure at an early age of 19. Blizzard likes to do tributes like these so keep an eye out for those if you're interested.
😢 even more sad that Raynor had to take down Tychus but in the end, Tychus may have wanted it that way versus being someone else’s slave because no way was he going to be set free even after killing her
heart of the swarm and especially legacy of the void has a lot of great story cutscenes, and most of the dialogues is not part of gameplay, its more like talk or action in between of actual gameplay, and unfortunately most react channels did watch short versions, and didnt get even 30% of the story. If i remember correctly, full compilation of legacy of the void cutscenes somewhere around 2-3 hrs long, plus small comics-style cinematic as prelude, similar to ones in WoW, but its so worth it! one of the most epic stories in videogames ever told! I hope for big version, even if it will be splitted into parts, worth the waiting also.
And the StarCraft journey have began, this is the first StarCraft game I played so it's kind of nostalgic for me. And damn if it ain't a good return for the series. The cinematic with Raynor giving the speech about things worth fighting for has to be my second favorite cinematic in all of StarCraft, (Number 1 comes in the third instalment of StarCraft 2 Legacy of the Void). There is just something about a good speech before the last battle that leaves such an effect on you. Have to be up there with one of the best tropes in game and movie making. Together with a good final stand. But listening to the jukebox in the cantina after putting on "Sweet home Alabama" and hearing it play when you talk to everyone is so nice. And Jim is such a badass, leaves a really good impression on you. If your wondering about some of the contradicting cinematics so does the sequels read your game and game some changes based on them. But Blizzard have said they go with "A canon" meaning whichever choice was A is the canon one. So Raynor sided with Tosh and his Specters over Nova and her Ghosts. He helped the Doctor protect the civilianize from the protos instead of destroying them. And he went into the underground tunnels. Which actually fits more with the cinematic which comes after it. Last one being gameplay only though.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Yeah, Artanis can't sadly match up. Can't wait for you to get to Legacy of the Void, major Protos player so yeah. Hyped for that.
As others said there's clips in here that show different paths in the game. Also this one leaves out a fair few of the in-game cutscenes. I would highly recommend for the next 2 the full movie versions, though they come in around the 2 hour mark each, but are worth it. As the starcraft lore is so rich.
I just wanna say that I am so pleasantly surprised that the emotional stuff in the story resonated with you. It can be hard to feel the gravity of a video game when you just watch cut scenes and not play it yourself, so this coming off so well was nice. Also Ken IMMEDIATELY getting the vibes of the StarCraft universe from opening scene was hilarious and after that everything clicked. XD When Starcraft 2 came out, I had been waiting for TWELVE years for a conclusion to the story, and I had really resigned myself to seeing a revenge story where either Jim kills Kerrigan and feels empty afterwards, or even possibly one where Raynor straight up dies, the poor bastard. So when we got the story, and they introduce an old friend (who clearly does care for Jim, even if his feelings are very complicated and his motivations ultimately are selfish) and the possibility of curing Kerrigan... man, I was so confused and conflicted! I really hated Kerrigan from my childhood days playing the first game, she is SUCH a bastard in that game, and she kills so many good characters and betrays everyone. You saw the flashback cutcscene though, where Kerrigan is left stranded with the Zerg invasion, and Mengsk abandons her while Raynor protests. It sparked a memory of the sense of loss and bitterness you feel playing through that level in the original game, and also just a desire to see that horrible moment fixed. Then, the last cut scene comes on... And Jim shoots Tychus, and Kerrigan seems like she's back to her old self... and Jim is carrying her, comforting her, and they both seem to be okay - I was basically speechless. That was basically the first time in Starcraft history the player got a "good" ending, however bittersweet. I remember just sitting at my computer, looking at it, and I won't lie, I teared up. Part of me felt like it was a betrayal to the ending of the first game, but a big part of me was also just so fucking happy to see something good come out of these two people. This video brought back those memories. Thanks!
We are happy to bring back those memories 😊🤗 And the characters were well done to have us invested as much as we were. It’s not the full story and some of the side characters aren’t as important to us as maybe they would be if we played. But we still loved Raynor’s journey and look forward to Heart of the Swarm 🥳🥳
Starcrafts Story is amazing and in my opinion it only gets better the more you progress through it ... i hope to see more here soon... also the Cutscenes in the next parts of starcraft tell you a lot more of the complete story ...
These cinematics are great but sadly they skip over some "important" scenes. So that you're not getting the full picture. One second the doctor is introduced and in the next she's getting killed without context. But it seems that you had fun. That's what important.
We definitely knew there would be some missing parts to it, and sometimes it’s fun to piece those together. And see how wrong or right we are haha. But these were fun to check out even though incomplete 🤗
A bit late and I hope you read this, in case no one's mentioned it already: There were a lot of interactions between and during missions, outside of the cutscenes that you saw which explain a lot more. For example, the Xel'Naga artifact that they were hunting was supposed to purge Kerrigan of her Zerg DNA, leaving only the human bits behind. Next, it was discovered early on that Tychus's suit had a kill-switch that would've killed Tychus by shutting down most of his internal organs. That's where the "You'll carry your prison with you" line comes from. The crystal that Zeratul gave Raynor contain Zeratul's memories of how he deciphered the visions and what he saw in the vision of the future, and why Kerrigan had to live. It's kinda sad that these weren't included. But it's a good reason for you to play the games and experience it yourselves.
Our Heart of the Swarm video had a few more in game stuff that helped tie things together. There seemed to be a few key things missing in this that could’ve been added and only made the vid like 15 minutes longer or something. We didn’t expect to get full story and nuances but still enjoyed our journey into this franchise and falling love with characters like Raynor and Kerrigan ☺️🤩
Thanks so much! We are glad you enjoy the reactions 😀🥳🥳 We didn’t set out to do reactions, this channel just evolved into it and we are happy it did 😊☺️
Big fan of your show and Blizzard products in general. But, I've had a special place in my heart for Starcraft. The whole story is pretty fun and invigorating. I'm looking forward to watching your reaction for the whole hour long of Wings of Liberty!
(Not so) Fun fact: The "M. Koiter" dog tag that Raynor takes from the marine at 45:00 was a tribute to Michel Koiter who was an artist for Blizzard who died of heart faliure at the age of 19 in 2004.
might have already been mentioned here but the game had two places where you could choose how to progress. one was with the doctor (help her, and turn on her); the other was with nova/tosh. you are shown the end clip of both missions, but not sure if (at the time) you understood that these are two different endings for those missions. if you help the doctor lady, she walks out friendly (extra friendly?) if you turn on her, she gets herself zergified (while trying to find a cure for the zerg infestation) with tosh, if you fight for him he walks out (somewhat) happy, if you turn on him, he ... does't get to walk for much longer
You guys are in for such a treat, I remember discovering this story/game back in middle school. Imho Jim/Sarah is one of the deepest sci-fi relationships across movies, books, etc. Also, I can't wait for you guys to get shivers when you hear, "My life for Aiur!" (in later expansions) :D
What a good reaction! It's so nice to watch you guys see this story for the first time🤩 It's a great testament to Blizzard that, despite these being only the cutscenes between missions (so there's a lot happening there which you're not getting - there are videos on youtube covering those and the cutscenes, btw), you're still able to put together the general theme of the story and characters. Also, this is the second part of Starcraft, the first game is from the end of the 90s so a lot of the backstory for this happened there (for example how Mengst rose to power.) Subscribed😊 Greetings from Germany👋
Officially Welcome! 🥳🥳🤗🍾🥂 Glad you enjoyed the reaction. Our Heart of the Swarm vid we watched had a bit more of the in game stuff to add more to the story 😀
One of the best RTS games out there. From the story to the gameplay is just great. The only “bad” thing is that so much of the fun stuff happens during missions and ingame interactions, like how Matt (the Captain) is technically married with a mercenary leader, as he “won” that marriage in a poker game, so you see her trying to wanting to talk to him and ask why he never calls, while he’s trying his best to avoid her. The same thing with Tychus. As a lot of people have already mentioned, Tychus was forced to kill Kerrigan or he’d be killed himself. However, you don’t see why they started to split apart mid game, resulting in their brawl in the bar. In short, after Raynor, Tychus, and Raynor’s Raiders got hold of 4 of the 5 artifact pieces they were told to get by Tychus’ contract (who was Valerian in secret, even unbeknownst to Tychus), the cutscene you watched here with Raynor meeting Valerian for the first time happens. He tells Raynor that with all 5 pieces of the artifact, they can reassemble it and deinfest Kerrigan back into her human form with it. After Raynor learned this, he became far more harsh to everyone if they were unsure about the whole thing, including Matt and Tychus, telling them that “if they don’t want to participate in this, then get the hell off his ship”. Matt was not happy about working for the Dominion at all, and Tychus wanted to just hand over the artifacts to Valerian, get paid, and get as far away from all of it as possible, as their missions became far riskier (one of them being litterally on a planet that was a few hours away from being destroyed by a dying star.) Luckliy, the story in the expansion packs are far more linear and easier to understand, but unfortunately, a lot of things still happen outside of cutscenes, so you still miss out a bit on a few things. I’d still heavily recommended that you watch the “The story so far” video for Heart of the Swarm before seeing the actual cutscenes. It’s only 2-3 min long, but it gives you all the necessary knowledge from this game and the 1st one 🙂
We had already seen the Wings of Liberty when you initially made suggestion so couldn’t watch intro for this one. But if we have time will squeeze it in for next two 🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames No problem at all ^^ It'd just be a shame for you to miss out on some of the cool things they don't really show =) Just a quick fact, as it's not really explained much in the games themselves, and if you're interested, of course; In the Starcraft universe, some humans are born with psionic powers which gives them great skills depending on how powerful they are. It's basically like if you're born with the right genes that enables you to run far faster than most, or born with an intelligence level that gives you a major advantage in school. The human (terrans) use a scale known as the Psi Index (PI for short) determinate an individual's power: Rating 1-2 means that you have no psychic powers at all, and most humans fall into this category. 2-5 means you have limited powers, like being able to sense other psionics. These are known as "Wranglers" 5-8 gives you Telepathy, and are known as "Teeps". Most ghosts (a special elite type of soldiers, like the blonde girl, Nova, who killed Tosh in one of the cutscenes) fall between 5-6. 8-10 May have telekinesis, and are known as "Teeks". This type of psionics are extremely rare, and only 3 people have ever been estimated at this level; Sarah Kerrigan (the redhead who is the Queen of Blades), Nova (the Blonde girl) and someone known as Sarco Angelini (not important to the games.) Here's the thing, though. Sarah was the first person ever to have this level of psionic powers. Because of her, they had to change the entire rating system as her level was unheard of beforehand, and still is among humans (Nova is only slightly behind her, though), and after Kerrigan became the Queen of Blades, her psionic powers reached even greater heights, being rated as a "class 12 psi signature" in the last mission of this game, and after becoming human again, she was still listed as a "class 11 psionic". This is especially important to the story as she was actually capable of controlling a small number of zerg creatures before her infestation, something no one has ever been capable of even after, and the only known creatures to match her powers are the Xel'Naga, who are basically gods, and the protoss, a race of highly advanced creatures who were specifically uplifted by the Xel'naga in order to create a race that had "purity of form" (the ability to house the powers of a Xel'naga), so just imagine how insanely powerful she really is, considering her power exceeds that of a race that was basically gifted by godlike creatures. I won't spoil too much, but this has a major part in the entire story, so keep an eye on that :-)
2:45 - Sorry for being two years too late. I just watched this again with my wife and she asked the same question. So, here it is! LoL :) As the scene implies, the space marine armor is plugged into their bodies like a second skin. It draws waste (including pee) away automatically and feeds it to the tiny, on board reactor. Any excess energy is expelled out the top like a jet engine. Which helps to provide artificial gravity, among other things.
Also btw this leads into the heart of the swarm cinematic yall saw, where she was laying in a bed in a lab, he brings her to a place to make sure shes alright, so that is next.
M.(Michael) Koiter was a blizzard premium artist who sadly died and his brother Rene Koiter put him in in WoW and Starcraft 2 WoL in his honor. He died at the age of 19 in 2004 from a heart failure. Every time it brings me to tears since i know this. That's really heartbreaking..
Since I'm early, might as well just drop a few explanations here: 1) The two cutscenes with Dr. Ariel Hanson (woman with the glasses) are the alternate endings to her side story, depending on whether you give her enough time to create a cure for the Zerg infestation virus. 2) The two cutscenes with Tosh (voodoo man) and Nova (blonde woman) are also alternate endings to Tosh's side story, with you basically picking which one you're gonna trust to train your spec op units (there's more than that, obviously, they had their own history, but that's way too much to get into). 3) The crystal Zeratul gave to Raynor held his memories which you play through, and the fight with Kerrigan had happened at the start of the "memory missions", so by the time Zeratul arrives with the crystal, he already figured out the whole picture, that he didn't have earlier. 4) The scene in New Gettysburg was voiced pretty much exactly as it was voiced in the first game (as that was a story mission back then), and same applies to the recording of Mengsk in the press conference, where he got a bit mad, that recording is something he tells the player (and Kerrigan, if I remember correctly) during another one of the story missions. 5) Tychus' suit really was his prison, it had sensors to detect tampering, or if he'd try to take it off, so he pretty much had a gun to his head ever since that suit was put on him. 6) Matt is alive and well, he's the captain of Raynor's flagship, so he stayed in orbit. The name on the tag is for one of the artists, who worked for Blizzard in the early 2000's and passed away from heart failure at the age of 19, he's also apparently got a tribute in WoW. Great video as always peeps, can't wait to see what you think of Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void!
Appreciate the explanations! Do we get more of Nova later on? Or since she could die in this one, guessing that’s it for the character. But the brief 10 seconds of screen time hooked us 🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames We do get more of Nova in Heart of the Swarm, and she doesn't die even if you choose to storm New Folsom with Tosh, she just gets reeeeeeally pissed off that you sided with the voodoo man. :D Also, since you like her, I'm happy to tell you that there is a separate SC2 campaign centred on Nova, Covert Ops. Never played it myself, but I think you'll enjoy it! Also, I'm happy to help explain some of the in-game lore details, especially when the story is just that good! I'll definitely pop up again if you guys decide to do a let's play or just watch cinematic stuff from the Mass Effect trilogy (just saying - it's worth it).
ooh cool observation about the space western stuff the next two installments are sequels but take different tones, I'm sure you guys will enjoy them too
Excited for your next one. Heart of the Swarm was my favorite chapter from Starcraft 2. If you'd like, the Vengeance trailer is excellent for building some hype for it.
The Zeratul-Kerrigan fight is a memory that Jim sees through the crystal he was given. There's a whole side-campaign where you play through Zeratul's memories as he discovers the invasion of the evil Xel'naga, and witnesses the "End of the universe" if they don't save Kerrigan.
there is a series of missions in the game that you either side with the colonists or the protoss, and depending on which you do gives you the 2 different "endings" with the doctor. you help the colonists the doctor is fine and walks out the door. you help the protoss, the doctor ends up infested.
"Unless you see a person dead, he's not dead" - He's definitely dead though ;) For extra context, the device that the general delivers in the second to last scene is a Xel'Naga artifact that allowed them to change the Queen of Blades back into Sarah Kerrigan,... sort of. More to come in Heart of the Swarm ;)
Wow, those were the good days, not even a year after i finished highschool i got the sc2 beta in feb 2010. Back when the game was so fresh and no one knew much about it! btw, some of the cutscenes are based on " Pick mission A or B" so the outcome in different depending on the choice, With the doctor for example as well as jim Siding with Tosh then siding with nova against tosh
15:56 Got that right. He's actually lost a family even before he met Sarah Kerrigan. Maybe someone remembers which comic this was from? It happened after Jim served with the old confederacy.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames He's always tried to do the right thing, but no good deed goes unpunished... 😞 Still, I'm satisfied with the outcome of his story, all things considered. You'll find out in legacy of the void. 😉 Part 3 of the trilogy
The Ending makes me cry all the time. But the cinematic that has sarah in New Gettysburg is actually a mission that you play is the original Starcraft, you have to go against the protoss and when you are done then the Zerg come takes her. But when arcturus leaves Sarah in New Gettysburg actually uses three Psi Emitters in a triangle shape. I also told you in part 1 of this that she was left because of her killing Arcturus's father, which his father tried to leave the confederacy at one point in time , so there for they sent sarah and two other ghosts in to kill His father, mother and sister. Which in my option Arcturus should of look the other way and forgive Sarah because she didn't want to do it. But thanks for watching and I can't wait to see you guys react to Heart of the Swarm. Oh and It's official Tychus does die there on char.
You talked about choice, and you're absolutely spot on. And the core of Kerrigan's story arc is that until that moment where Raynor saves her at the end, she never had the ability to choose in her entire life. It's not until the end of wings of liberty that she is actually free for the first time ever.
Can I just say that I love Blizzards attention to detail during the first Zeratul vs Kerrigan cutscene. Those aren't hydralisks, those are hunter killers...
Another alternate story path that for some reason was NOT included - you can either help Tosh free the rest of the Spectres, in which case they turn out NOT to be the psychopaths that the Terran Dominion paints them as - or you can help Nova (that's the woman that killed Tosh), in which case the Spectres ARE the psychopaths that the Dominion paints them as. I think the reason they chose the "kill Tosh" story path is because of how funny it is when the voodoo doll works (just not on Raynor, as Tosh expected). The only difference between the two paths is whether you can train Spectres or Ghosts for the rest of the campaign.
unlucky in love is an understatement for Jim Raynor, before Jim met Kerrigan he was happily married and had a child, it all ended when his child died in a government facility for telepaths/psychics shortly after receiving that letter Jim's wife committed suicide or became severely Ill I don't recall. 49:28 in one of the minor cutscenes that wasn't included you find out the Tychus' armor is designed to shut down his organs which is why the light in his helmet starts turning red, because Mengsk was forcing him to get on with it.
That cutscene seems more major than minor and would’ve helped us be more sympathetic towards Tychus as well as make it more heartbreaking when Jim has to kill him 😢
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames it happens after a predetermined number of missions I believe, it had Matt the man in the Uniform mentions that Tychus's suit was designed to shut down his organs whit a transmitted command, and it never comes up again in the entire game until the very end. Also if you want more back story on Jim and Tychus you'll want to read the books Heaven's Devils and the sequel called Devil's Due.
44:42 When you see the classic Starcraft skin of Blue and black, expecting only an Easter egg and get the greatest reveal of "Michel Koiter" (born 3 May 1984) was a Blizzard artist who died 18 March 2004 from heart failure at the age of nineteen. He and René Koiter formed Twincruiser, an artist duo for Blizzard Entertainment and the Sons of the Storm. Aka, Literal legends in the development Blizzard Entertainments rise to power.
Wings of Liberty was a great return to Starcraft for people who'd been jonesing for their fix for like 10 years lol. Personally, I find it to be the least exciting campaign out of SC2...but that's because I'm kinda "eh boring humans, gimme the aliens" lol. The Zerg and the Protoss are both just awesome races, and between them have a lot of characters I really enjoy (particularly on the Protoss side, though Kerrigan is at the top of my favorite game characters of all time). For the record, Matt Horner is the captain of Raynor's main ship and that was NOT him dead in that cutscene you mentioned where Raynor was collecting dog tags. That specific soldier wasn't anyone of particular note as far as I'm aware, but Raynor is the kind of commander who gives a crap about every single person under his command and pays respect to anyone who lays down their life in his service...so it was more of a character-building thing for Jimmy than anything to do with Matt. Captain Horner is still quite alive and well. :) There are definitely bits and pieces of the story that get missed with a video like this but it's hella difficult to get them without watching literally hours of in-game footage, so I think you got enough of the narrative to give you what you need to follow along and enjoy. Some of the things that happen outside of cinematics are pretty important, but stuff usually picks up enough afterwards to fill you in that SOMETHING happened lol. There are some large gaps in Heart of the Swarm that might leave some empty spaces in your experience, but if that comes up you know you can count on me to write you a few paragraphs filling in the blanks. ;) Looking forward to next Monday! Glad to see you guys are having fun with this! :D
We heard (in other comments on here, so I guess we read it is more accurate) the name on the tag was actually a blizzard employee that passed away at 19 from a heart attack. So that was in honor of him to have his name there. We have a feeling Heart of the Swarm is going to be our favorite 😁🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Aww, as I was typing out my comment I thought that may be the case. Blizzard does that kind of thing relatively often, little nods of respect to employees or community members who passed on. Didn't know for sure though.
Not sure if you guys have a Heart of the Swarm video already made, but there's one with narrated inter-cinematic voiceover. I'll try to find the link if you're interested.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Well here it is at any rate if someone else wants to have a bit more context between the scenes: ua-cam.com/video/L2o5dnVuxiI/v-deo.html
So,lets go a bit deeper into the story, this is going to be a long comment,so grab a drink haha. So,the whole point of the first campaign,is to collect Xel naga artifacts,to eventually construct the xel naga keystone, that you saw in the end,as the "present"that general warfield brought to Raynor. You basically hunt down these artifacts for money. In the first campaign tho, there are a couple of options you can follow during the campaign, just like the 2 cinematics with Ariel,im sure you got really confused. The first one,is appearing if you protect her people from the protoss purification(she asked you for some time to find the cure, and she made it),and the second one, appears if you help the protoss instead,to clear them out(she becomes infested in the lab and eventually dies from Raynor). The second time is when you saw that guy tosh,in the first one, raynor and tosh worked together to get tosh's people out of new folsom,a really well-guarded world prison. And the second one,is when you help Nova(a dominion highly ranked ghost) to take out tosh instead. There is also a 3rd dilemma during the char missions, where you decide which zerg defenses you wanna take out before you engage the main hive, but that has nothing to do with the lore,i just mentioned it. So the first important scene,is when zeratul came to reynor,to give him this ihan crystal(This crystal is supposed to allow a person relive another person's memories, and study the past). He warned raynor that kerrigan is the only one who can bring salvation to this world, when the darkest hour will come.Later on, 34:30 is the first cinematic of zeratul's missions, where you are trying to collect prophecies in order to stand against the comming oblivion. There is actually more cinematics(there are 4 missions),and im kinda sad that there were not in this video, but maybe its better, because you would be really confused.Long story short,it shows you what the world will look like,if kerrigan dies(the forth mission ends with the protoss last stand agaisnt horrific legions of hybrid. Before we hope into char,i got to mention that there is a hidden mission, which actually gives you a first taste of the hybrid(it is sad that even this cinematic is absent(you invade a secret lab of the terran dominion, where they do expiriments and try to combine zerg and protoss DNA,to create these hybrid abominations, but i wont spoil you,you will find out later on,more about the hybrids.)And finally, the invasion of char begins.Raynor's raiders and half of the dominion fleet are about to engage the fiery planet. And after the first attack, and the success of creating a foothold on the char's orbid, the Xel naga artifact has been assembled.Raynor was working during the whole campaign to get this artifact done. So after the last mission, when you hold off the zerg attacks until the artifact is overcharged, and purify most of the life in char,Kerrigan's infestation is cleansed, she is back to her human form(not completely as you may have noticed by her hair),and Raynor holds her.Tychus reveals his evil plan, and he is about to execute her.Raynor remembers..."you will hold her life in your hands, and though justice demands that she must die for her crimes, only she can save us" that was the zeratul's words. Plus he is in love with her,he couldnt allow it.He killed his own friend to protect her.Thats it for the wings of liberty,im super excited for the next ones, will be waiting for them.I hope that i helped you even a bit,to understand even better the lore.I will do the same with the next episodes,if you would like it of course.See you in the next one, much love
Thanks so much for helping fill in the gaps I. The story. Heart of the Swarm is next and the video we chose is a little bit longer and has some in game stuff to help us understand story better. Not a ton of in game stuff but some important bits 🙂😀🥳
im probably a bit late on this recommendation, but if you haven't already seen them, i would reccomend making march your command and conquer month. That series has some stupid and awesome cinematics that are just SOOO cheezy. The entire tiberian and red alert series has great cinematics.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Definetly. I'd recommend checking out the red alert trailers first then. The reason the series gets so many compliments for its cutscenes is because they were one of the first games to use real actors. It just oozes that 80s cheezy b-movie vibe
38:36 well in this case timeline of trailers was reversed since you may notice that at the end of the scuffle with Kerrigan Zeratul holds his injured arm, just as he did when he met Raynor., So this event happened before .When Kerrigan told him about prophecy and she is planning to sacrifice herself to try to stop the threat he went to Jim to tell him that he needs to help Kerrigan so that she would survive, because without her everything will be lost
When thinking about why he chose to save her instead of helping Tychus, remember the conversation he had with Zeratul, in which he told Raynor that she's the only one that can save them, and gave him the little artifact with his own memories of what he saw when peering into the future. So maybe there is also bros before hoes, but there's more at stake at that moment. Love your reaction as always, and can't wait for more!
There is nothing more at stake than bros before hos! 😂🤗 just kidding 😜 But we also would like to think that Jim chose love as well. In addition to the whole saving the universe thing 😛
38:25 The meeting of Zeratul and Raynor happened after Zeratuls encounter with Kerrigan...that's why Zeratul was injured when he met with Raynor on the ship...Zeratul realized Kerrigan still had humanity left in her...she could have easily killed Zeratul, but showed mercy....so Zeratul told Raynor to save her...
I don't want to be a negative commenter, but there are better edited videos for the story. So first of all a bit of information. To begin with, Tychus could not be saved. Apart from being a loose screw, his armor was literally his cell. If he denied the order his suit would kill him. It was made that way to force him to do what he had to do and not just run away as soon as they let him free. Now, fact 2. Throughout the game, using the device Zeratul gave Raynor, you see (as Raynor sees) what Zeratul went through (including that fight with Kerrigan, it was before he talked with Raynor). Watching Zeratul's journey you learn about the ancient prophecies and you see how the world will end if they don't change the path that fate is en route already. Fact 3, Matt is alive. He is the admiral of the fleet, so he doesn't participate in ground battles (that guy was a random soldier, but Raynor has this habit of collecting his soldier's tags to honor them by building graves for them) For the next two, I would recommend these 2 videos. Heart of the Swarm: ua-cam.com/video/9bapiYyFtqU/v-deo.html Legacy of the Void: ua-cam.com/video/gCISR0T3grE/v-deo.html (This one is a big one, but Legacy of the Void had a lot of content and it also includes the epilogue) I highly recommend watching these videos if you want to understand what is going on and not just watch some cinematics that don't make too much sense
The first vid works but even in two videos not sure we could breakdown the third. Is there like a 2 hour vid for Legacy of the Void? Also, we don’t mind constructive feedback like you are giving. So no need to apologize. You weren’t negative just to be negative. You wanted us to have the best viewing experience possible which will make our reaction videos better so we appreciate that 🤗😊🥳🥳
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Well the next one in length is 1 hour, but it misses so much of the story. Legacy of the void had a very deep story telling, and most of it was during the missions. You will miss most of the stuff that make sense if you go with something shorter. The one I linked you for Legacy of the Void, is the shortest one that does not include actual gameplay (aka the strategy part). Trust me, you will really enjoy it in case you go with it. If not, we are still here to explain anything you miss :D The best way of course to get sucked into the story is playing the games. Not going to lie, Legacy of the Void, was the one game I cried like never before, because I had followed some characters throughout their entire stories. Looking forward to it, love your content ^_^
Miesha did a fantastic job here, don't need me. I will say this, though, if you like sci-fi in western style you have to watch Firefly. Sadly, it only lasted one season, but it was excellent and has gathered a cult following. In fact, the movie, Serenity, was made to close out the story Firefly began.
Man I remember when that 1st teaser was shown at a Korean games con and nobody knew it was coming. Competitive Starcraft is huge over there and the crowd lost its damn mind.
you guys really should watch the pre-mission debriefings they give a lot more understanding of the characters and reasons for the way they act. also does anyone know the song that was playing at 25:55?
That was after Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd right? Not sure the name of song after that scene where the shop comes in which is I believe where time stamp shows 🤔
I feel like something was lost or missing at the end with Jim was carrying Sarah into the sunset given your reaction or lack of. For hardcore Sc2 fans this was an awesome tear jerker moment. We got our girl back. She was such an important character in the 1st game, her attitude, and kinda love story with Raynor, losing her to the zerg and watching her decent into madness was tough to experience.. And then here we are in 2010, at the time the game was release, 12 years after the release of the first game. We got her back, for the moment..
the girl is Kerrigan, she was abandon on a planet to the invasion of the zerg for political gain, she was also the romance arc for Rainer. What the zerg did to her once captured was ...something else. Thus the queen of blades is born.
Raynor may not have killed Tychus, but he would still have died because Arcturus Mengsk had a kill-switch in his armor so he had to kill Kerrigan or die himself :( Though you are right, Tychus was a great antihero(?) or foil for Raynor
Can’t believe he died so young from heart failure 😢
Interesting. Curious why the person who uploader these chose the scenes they chose 🤔
Yep yep 👍
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Don't quote me on this information, but I had heard that the name on the dog tag at 45:03 was the name of a Starcraft Tournament winner... Or the winner of a contest. One of the two.

Tychus could have gone full auto, but he didn't.
@@mechanomics2649 it had been done before iirc... To one person (revived, infested, deinfested, reinfested.) Buuut won't say who.
Well done guys, great reaction! The "and fix my damn jukebox" bit was just epic! :) Thank you for the entertainment!
Haha, glad you enjoyed it as much as we did 🥳🥳🥂
Unlike the two next starcraft 2 videos you'll watch, this one has a few variables in it.
XD
Anyway, good way to sum it up.
Would be cool if in real life the question of who is right or wrong would also adapt to your choices wouldnt it be?
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames If you keep Tosh around, in between missions he'll have optional dialogue that hints towards a traitor on the ship
It's tosh for me
@@NafanuaisMYnick The way they explain the kill switch it's likely that trying to disconnect it will set it off and kill Tychus anyway. Jim likely doesn't push the subject in case he pushes Tychus into a situation where he risks setting it off.

I mean, we still don’t like the guy and want him to get it in the end (or sooner) but at least we understand more 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Oh, yes, definitely not likeable guy, who makes you trust him with fake smiles. I'm fully on that with you ^^
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames The scariest thing about Arcturus and the entire Mengsk family line is their innate charisma.
We really enjoyed checking out the cinematics and cutscenes for these 😀🤩
Matt is still alive just a ton of missing cutscenes with the Protoss and uhhh Matt's story line.
The one scene where this is explained goes like this (from StarCraft Wiki):
Horner: "Sir, when Tychus came back aboard the ship, I had the techs run a scan on him."
Raynor: "Matt, you need to get a hobby."
Horner: "Seriously Sir -- his suit contains a sophisticated transponder... if it receives the correct code, it'll shut down all his major organs. That suit is a death trap."
Raynor: "He's got a gun to his head."
Horner: "And who's got their finger on the trigger? Moebius?"
Raynor: "Tychus, what have you gotten yourself into?"
They stole the jukebox during one of their train robberies. Really cool to see it in the sc2 campaign.

Ah okay. Thanks for explaining that plot point to us and letting us know more about why Kerrigan is actually important and valued in this 🙂
Sarah Kerrigan was originally a human Ghost, like Nova; the red head we saw in that other clip, that was h we r.
But the point of this game, was to assemble all the pieces of that Artifact, and purge the Zerg from her.
Shame it couldn't last, but she has a bigger part to play; you'll see in act two: Heart of the Swarm.

:) I know some of the stuff was explained by other people but here are some facts that may or may not help, spoiler free (hopefully :)):
- in the opening scene you witness pretty much how the terran marines are "formed". they are normal people (unlike the warhammer universe) in thicc armor and they can be government sanctioned units, local militias, ordinary soldiers but some can also be like our Tychus here: pirates, traitors etc.
- at 16:40 Jim meets Zeratul.
She is nasty :)
- As for Mengsk, he is an a-hole :) although "thanks" to him, Jim and Kerrigan met each other during Mengsk's revolutionary campaign against the Terran Confederancy.
We don’t have the full story to appreciate. But what we do have is definitely still fun for us to watch 😀

-To make things more understandable I'll give you guys a back story
Tychus Fidlay was working with Jim Raynor this whole time and before , they got cough and Tychus took all the blame on himself he did not rat out Jim. His a loyal friend of Jim , but when you are a criminal everyone for themselves in a way.
After Tychus was imprisoned they offered him a deal , to kill Kerrigan and go Free or rot in prison.
(By the way the armor he had was self destructive so if he would have disobeyed the order , Arcturus Mengskwould would have ordered to have him killed , so he had a choice , him or Kerrigan.)
On the other hand Zeratul (The alian) Told Jim the whole life existence rests on Kerrigan survival ! (That's why it made it was a hard choice for him to make as well)
And Jim had to choice to make the whole existence of life or Tychus Fidlay his friend .
A really hard choices there . Heart breaking.
We also wonder (taking out the save all life bit) if Jim would’ve simply chosen Kerrigan over Tychus straight up if given the choice 🤔
Thanks for sharing that info. That scene at 35 mins now makes a ton more sense 😀🙂
My favourite line I've incorporated into my life ever since.
"Sweet Mother of Mercy"
😂😁😎🤟
Raynor gives good speeches for sure ☺️😎🤟
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Yeah, Artanis can't sadly match up. Can't wait for you to get to Legacy of the Void, major Protos player so yeah. Hyped for that.
As others said there's clips in here that show different paths in the game. Also this one leaves out a fair few of the in-game cutscenes. I would highly recommend for the next 2 the full movie versions, though they come in around the 2 hour mark each, but are worth it. As the starcraft lore is so rich.
Not sure we will be able to do those longer vids. 🤗
"And fix my damn jukebox" damn he got it word for word haha 34:05
Lucky guess haha 🤗
I just wanna say that I am so pleasantly surprised that the emotional stuff in the story resonated with you. It can be hard to feel the gravity of a video game when you just watch cut scenes and not play it yourself, so this coming off so well was nice. Also Ken IMMEDIATELY getting the vibes of the StarCraft universe from opening scene was hilarious and after that everything clicked. XD
When Starcraft 2 came out, I had been waiting for TWELVE years for a conclusion to the story, and I had really resigned myself to seeing a revenge story where either Jim kills Kerrigan and feels empty afterwards, or even possibly one where Raynor straight up dies, the poor bastard.
We are watching Heart of the Swarm next week 😀🥳
I'm so glad I have found your channel. It's so hard to find actually good reaction videos that aren't cringe or forced
🥳🥳😎🤟 This was as good as had hoped it would be and surprised us a bit with the tone 🤠
(Not so) Fun fact: The "M. Koiter" dog tag that Raynor takes from the marine at 45:00 was a tribute to Michel Koiter who was an artist for Blizzard who died of heart faliure at the age of 19 in 2004.
😢
might have already been mentioned here but the game had two places where you could choose how to progress.
one was with the doctor (help her, and turn on her); the other was with nova/tosh. you are shown the end clip of both missions, but not sure if (at the time) you understood that these are two different endings for those missions.
if you help the doctor lady, she walks out friendly (extra friendly?) if you turn on her, she gets herself zergified (while trying to find a cure for the zerg infestation)
with tosh, if you fight for him he walks out (somewhat) happy, if you turn on him, he ... does't get to walk for much longer
😎👍🙂
Tosh sticks around if you fight for him
You guys are in for such a treat, I remember discovering this story/game back in middle school. Imho Jim/Sarah is one of the deepest sci-fi relationships across movies, books, etc. Also, I can't wait for you guys to get shivers when you hear, "My life for Aiur!" (in later expansions) :D
😯😀 We like getting goosebumps from storytelling ☺️
What a good reaction! It's so nice to watch you guys see this story for the first time🤩 It's a great testament to Blizzard that, despite these being only the cutscenes between missions (so there's a lot happening there which you're not getting - there are videos on youtube covering those and the cutscenes, btw), you're still able to put together the general theme of the story and characters. Also, this is the second part of Starcraft, the first game is from the end of the 90s so a lot of the backstory for this happened there (for example how Mengst rose to power.)
Subscribed😊
Greetings from Germany👋
Matt was not happy about working for the Dominion at all, and Tychus wanted to just hand over the artifacts to Valerian, get paid, and get as far away from all of it as possible, as their missions became far riskier (one of them being litterally on a planet that was a few hours away from being destroyed by a dying star.)
Luckliy, the story in the expansion packs are far more linear and easier to understand, but unfortunately, a lot of things still happen outside of cutscenes, so you still miss out a bit on a few things.
But if we have time will squeeze it in for next two 🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames No problem at all ^^ It'd just be a shame for you to miss out on some of the cool things they don't really show =)
Just a quick fact, as it's not really explained much in the games themselves, and if you're interested, of course;
In the Starcraft universe, some humans are born with psionic powers which gives them great skills depending on how powerful they are. It's basically like if you're born with the right genes that enables you to run far faster than most, or born with an intelligence level that gives you a major advantage in school.
The human (terrans) use a scale known as the Psi Index (PI for short) determinate an individual's power:
Rating 1-2 means that you have no psychic powers at all, and most humans fall into this category.
2-5 means you have limited powers, like being able to sense other psionics. These are known as "Wranglers"
5-8 gives you Telepathy, and are known as "Teeps". Most ghosts (a special elite type of soldiers, like the blonde girl, Nova, who killed Tosh in one of the cutscenes) fall between 5-6.
8-10 May have telekinesis, and are known as "Teeks". This type of psionics are extremely rare, and only 3 people have ever been estimated at this level; Sarah Kerrigan (the redhead who is the Queen of Blades), Nova (the Blonde girl) and someone known as Sarco Angelini (not important to the games.)
Here's the thing, though.
LoL :)
As the scene implies, the space marine armor is plugged into their bodies like a second skin. It draws waste (including pee) away automatically and feeds it to the tiny, on board reactor. Any excess energy is expelled out the top like a jet engine. Which helps to provide artificial gravity, among other things.
So many more amazing cinematics still to come from StarCraft
Heart of the Swarm up next 😀🥳
Also btw this leads into the heart of the swarm cinematic yall saw, where she was laying in a bed in a lab, he brings her to a place to make sure shes alright, so that is next.
Monday. Looking forward to it 😁
M.(Michael) Koiter was a blizzard premium artist who sadly died and his brother Rene Koiter put him in in WoW and Starcraft 2 WoL in his honor. He died at the age of 19 in 2004 from a heart failure. Every time it brings me to tears since i know this. That's really heartbreaking..
It really is 😢 but a nice way to honor his memory
Since I'm early, might as well just drop a few explanations here:
1) The two cutscenes with Dr.
But the brief 10 seconds of screen time hooked us 🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames ua-cam.com/video/dFDB3uSDUDw/v-deo.html Nova missions 4th expansion
Loving the story of this game and the overall feel as well, it's like they knew what type of movies are my favorite
Haha, right? Combing a western and Sci Fi? Yes please 🤠
ooh cool observation about the space western stuff
the next two installments are sequels but take different tones, I'm sure you guys will enjoy them too
Heart of the Swarm tomorrow 🥳🥳
Excited for your next one. Heart of the Swarm was my favorite chapter from Starcraft 2. If you'd like, the Vengeance trailer is excellent for building some hype for it.
Thanks for the rec for Vengeance trailer 😎🤟
The Zeratul-Kerrigan fight is a memory that Jim sees through the crystal he was given. There's a whole side-campaign where you play through Zeratul's memories as he discovers the invasion of the evil Xel'naga, and witnesses the "End of the universe" if they don't save Kerrigan.
Thanks! 🙂😀
in the doctor part he can chhose whether to save her which ends in the first cut scene or to destroy them and it ends with the "poor doctor'' ending.
there is a series of missions in the game that you either side with the colonists or the protoss, and depending on which you do gives you the 2 different "endings" with the doctor. you help the colonists the doctor is fine and walks out the door. you help the protoss, the doctor ends up infested.
😎👍🙂
best story ever. it gets better in heart of the swarm and even better in legacy of the void.

One of the Best Cutscene Ever in the Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty
Ost Title : Card To Play
I wake up to that song ever day
"Unless you see a person dead, he's not dead" - He's definitely dead though ;) For extra context, the device that the general delivers in the second to last scene is a Xel'Naga artifact that allowed them to change the Queen of Blades back into Sarah Kerrigan,... sort of. More to come in Heart of the Swarm ;)
🪦 Tychus 😢
I just realized the music playing in valerians ship is the same music playing during the broodwar opening
😎👍😀
damn u definitely and definitively nailed the regenerative power comment about kerrigan
Haha, 🤗😉
15:56 Got that right. He's actually lost a family even before he met Sarah Kerrigan. Maybe someone remembers which comic this was from? It happened after Jim served with the old confederacy.
Someone told us all that had happened to him before and man is that traumatic 😱
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames He's always tried to do the right thing, but no good deed goes unpunished... 😞
Still, I'm satisfied with the outcome of his story, all things considered.
Poor Tychus and Raynor. 😢 Friends til the end
"And fix my damn jukebox!"
And then the jukebox is back and working again.
It did add a little bit more humor to the vid having that scene 🙃
unlucky in love is an understatement for Jim Raynor, before Jim met Kerrigan he was happily married and had a child, it all ended when his child died in a government facility for telepaths/psychics shortly after receiving that letter Jim's wife committed suicide or became severely Ill I don't recall.
44:42 When you see the classic Starcraft skin of Blue and black, expecting only an Easter egg and get the greatest reveal of "Michel Koiter"
(born 3 May 1984) was a Blizzard artist who died 18 March 2004 from heart failure at the age of nineteen.
There are definitely bits and pieces of the story that get missed with a video like this but it's hella difficult to get them without watching literally hours of in-game footage, so I think you got enough of the narrative to give you what you need to follow along and enjoy. Some of the things that happen outside of cinematics are pretty important, but stuff usually picks up enough afterwards to fill you in that SOMETHING happened lol. There are some large gaps in Heart of the Swarm that might leave some empty spaces in your experience, but if that comes up you know you can count on me to write you a few paragraphs filling in the blanks. ;)
Looking forward to next Monday!
Didn't know for sure though.
hearth of the swarm is going to be a blast i hope both of you will enjoy it
We look forward to it 😁
Not sure if you guys have a Heart of the Swarm video already made, but there's one with narrated inter-cinematic voiceover. I'll try to find the link if you're interested.
Filming it tonight already. Depends on length. Some of the videos are super long for these and we only have so much time unfortunately 🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames okkkk,thats even better
im probably a bit late on this recommendation, but if you haven't already seen them, i would reccomend making march your command and conquer month. That series has some stupid and awesome cinematics that are just SOOO cheezy. The entire tiberian and red alert series has great cinematics.
We need to check out some trailers for that series first to see if it hooks us like StarCraft did 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Definetly.
All CMC suits come with automatic waste disposal, So tychus is good on that front.
We can sleep easier at night ☺️
He is the admiral of the fleet, so he doesn't participate in ground battles (that guy was a random soldier, but Raynor has this habit of collecting his soldier's tags to honor them by building graves for them)
For the next two, I would recommend these 2 videos.
Heart of the Swarm: ua-cam.com/video/9bapiYyFtqU/v-deo.html
Legacy of the Void: ua-cam.com/video/gCISR0T3grE/v-deo.html (This one is a big one, but Legacy of the Void had a lot of content and it also includes the epilogue)
I highly recommend watching these videos if you want to understand what is going on and not just watch some cinematics that don't make too much sense
If not, we are still here to explain anything you miss :D
The best way of course to get sucked into the story is playing the games.
We will try and check that out at some point. Always looking for good shows even if it was just one season 🙂
Man I remember when that 1st teaser was shown at a Korean games con and nobody knew it was coming. Competitive Starcraft is huge over there and the crowd lost its damn mind.
😎🤟
My life for Auir!
Wasn’t alive when this game came out but damn I wish I was, one of my favorite stories in my history of games
Been a fan since the original starcraft. This was my intro to rts and what passionate creatives can put into the world.
☺️🤩
watching you both grow old in these videos is like opening time capsule
That was more enjoyable than I expected.
😊🤗
you guys really should watch the pre-mission debriefings they give a lot more understanding of the characters and reasons for the way they act.
also does anyone know the song that was playing at 25:55?
That was after Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd right? Not sure the name of song after that scene where the shop comes in which is I believe where time stamp shows 🤔
I laughed so hard " And fix my damn jukebox! >:l "
😂😁🤗
Great nickname for character 😁
Raynor may not have killed Tychus, but he would still have died because Arcturus Mengsk had a kill-switch in his armor so he had to kill Kerrigan or die himself :( Though you are right, Tychus was a great antihero(?) or foil for Raynor
Also! Fortunately, Matt was not the one on the dogtag :D
