You gotta love Goombario for the sheer amount of effort the devs put in giving him unique dialogue for every single room and enemy in the entire game.

@@Mysticshosh42 when I was a kid I'd just charge him a bunch of times then multibonk Bowser and it was too easy. How is it glitched?
I will admit, he surely helped me out when I got confused on certain puzzles. Definitely one of the best guide characters in any game I've played
@@richarddavis8863 after the first multibonk the game fails to reset the counter so every multibonk after will always fail after the first A press if you want more details on it I highly recommend stryder7x video on paper marios battle mechanics
Honestly this was amazing and I would love for you to do this with Paper Mario TTYD and/or Super Mario RPG on the SNES.

You should do a Goldeneye survey video. You could do single-player levels, multiplayer levels, guns, characters, modes, cheats, etc. Really the sky is the limit

The reason I didn't like Flower Fields (comparatively) were that it just didn't feel like a big place to explore. You were always going back to the central area. Also I found a lot of the enemies annoying, I feel like the environment could have been more interesting considering the theme, and not a fan of the mashing that the final boss made you do. Finally, no shop, inn, or even a heart block. Only thing I really liked was the music and a couple of the areas visually (mainly the water area and the sun tower, I wish more of the world could have stood out like that)
To me it is mostly nostalgia. I saw a screenshot of the great tree on the wii-shop page for Paper Mario. I wanted the game for months and i kept going to the page to dream about it. When i finally got it game i rushed to see that part. All other chapters where amazing, but to see this place i had so much expectations for. It was exciting. The music was comforting but the area had a slight eeriness to it. Looking back, it is one of the lesser chapters, but the nostalgia fills me with glee every time
I just think it’s not worth the effort. It’s a lot like twilight town in the sequel, it’s a cool idea and story that gives you a pretty good party member, but the insane amount of wasted time running around everywhere sours the mood. Having to back track for seeds you most likely missed your first blind run through and just running back in forth on the straight plain makes it seem a lot worse than it probably is.
@@Neogears1312 The observation of the straight paths is spot on. 50% of the chapter feels like you're running down hallways to get something for someone to unlock the next area... to get more things for more people. The whole thing felt restrictive, repetitive, confusing, and quite frankly boring.
Enemies don't help with how hard they are to avoid in the tight spaces and the fact you're backtracking through those spaces again and again means you fight those same enemies again and again.
You know considering how it's Flower *Fields* it sure felt like I was surrounded by a lot of walls...
@@Neogears1312 Lol ironically, Chapter 4 is my favorite from TTYD. I like the environment and characters that much that I can overlook the navigation annoyances, and even that at least has a unique feel

Two fantastic ideas I saw in the comments were for Paper Mario ttyd as it would follow suit to this video and Mario Party, as there is so much potential questions for these surveys!
Flower Fields is more interesting for how you unlock it then anything that happens while you're there.
As for more survey videos, might be worth doing Bomberman 64 ranking the multiplayer maps along side the bosses.
I'm surprised Watt was ranked so low. Her ability to bypass Defense makes her great in the later fights of the game is a huge boon, especially against Super Bowser who can heal himself for 30 HP semi-randomly
I'd love to see you do the Castlevania series! Favorite stages, favorite protagonists, favorite subweapons, favorite tracks, bosses, etc!. That game is ripe for the picking!
I'd like to see a survey about banjo tooie. I hardly ever see people talk about it, so I'm very curious about what the results would be.
Flower fields being a little confusing and hard to traverse is a good factor on its low popularity. I think it's a chapter that gets better on further playthroughs of the game, but most people don't play the game more than once.
I already suggested this under one of your posts, but I think adding an optional "why is X your favorite/least favorite" question can go a long way in making these surveys more interesting. It's always nice to know why, for example, Bow was by far most people's favorite party member. For the videos you don't have to read off every justification, just ones that get repeated a lot or are most interesting to you
She's not my favorite, but clearly her hiding ability is unmatched in battles. Easily the best to get you out of a though spot. Outside battle her ability isn't that good, save for her own chapter, where it makes for a fun stealth challenge.

The reason why Chapter 6 rank this poorly is the amount of backtracking in this chapter and maybe the chapter boss cause that fight gives a lot of people problems as a kid
Chapter 6 was the absolute worst!
Flower Fields is an inconvenient place all around. It's not very big, but there's way too much backtracking and you routinely have to go back to Toad Town if you want to heal or get some items. Puzzles are numerous but very simplistic, which makes them just a time sink. Then there's the boss, which is the most annoying of them all. I understand perfectly why it's last place.
I can’t believe chapter 5 isn’t in the top 3. Mount Lavalava island was so large and memorable. And it was almost like a two part chapter with very different terrain

As someone who put sushie as my favorite partner, I'm kinda shocked that she scored so badly. Lackilester I understand, late partner without high damage. but sushie for me has a great defense move which I get is not everyone's jam, and with a little practice the highest damage in game with tidal wave. Idk I guess a lot of people just use her to shred lava piranha and then box her for the 3 more times her field ability is relevant. But for me, as soon as I got good with tidal wave I used it almost exclusively until the 7.
Also watt deserves better >:V
I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with gameplay and instead every female party member was simply compared against Bow, who everyone loves for being a sassy bratty princess. Unfortunately, Sushi has more of a low key matronly attitude which isn't as, I dunno, appealing.
Watt was my least favorite because I don't enjoy babey.
I was shocked Watt scored so low, especially with how helpful she is during the fight against Bowser.
I always thought the prologue of this game was the weakest part, mostly due to lack of action commands. I bet ya if everyone replayed the game recently it would be lower. The reason most people don't remember it is because it's at the beginning of the game.
Yeah, it's a good way to get your feet wet, but it really does drag iirc. Though to be fair, that is something I noticed a lot more by my second playthrough.

I was more surprised by the favorites than I was by the least favorites. I would've thought Watt would be the favorite partner and Chapter 8 the favorite chapter.
Sushi & Chapter 6 have always been my favorites, I'm baffled at how low they are ranking!
I'm surprised to hear that he was surprised about Flower Fields. It's a rather repetitive fetch quest. My favorite will always be Shiver City. Great pacing leading up to the ice palace. Tension dealing with injustice where you're accused with murder. Then a secret passageway to get the key. After that you fight a monster who in a twist turns out to be scared little kids. Stairs form and ascend out of nowhere. Once inside the dungeon, you're dealing with slightly disorienting mirrors moving in and out of it. But what truly makes it a great chapter is the mood. It has a nice, winter storm kind of vibe. Each time I play I look forward to that chapter.

This was the first survey of yours which I took part in. It was good. About chapter 6, from what I have seen, the reasons a lot of people didn't seem to like it can be chalked up to the repetitive, grating music and the backtracking through narrow passageways. I was one of those that voted for it as my least favorite, but I'm glad that you're able to get some enjoyment out of that chapter that I was never able to.
Definitely keep doing this survey videos. They are super interesting and worth a sub and telling other friends to sub.
I’m not sure what your scope of expertise falls into, but you could get a lot of content from the mega man games.
As a child, I remember preferring the hammer because its action command was easier. I have very fond memories of chapter 6 and as an adult it's one of my favorite parts. The whole game is my favorite part, really.
I'd love to see the same thing presented for TTYD! If I had to guess the partner order it would probably top with Vivian, goombella, Bobbery, koops, yoshi, ms mowz, flurry. Though I can definitely see yoshi getting higher from how fast you move with him
Yoshi would absolutely rank high due to the removal of spinning. TTYD has an absurd amount of backtracking for some reason (Twilight Town/Steeple, Jungle, Boggly Woods Necklace, Petal Meadows/Fortress Keys, having to go to the door every time you complete a chapter, Finding Colonial White for the cannon, even Excess Express quests to name a few... I'm sure theres more.) Yoshi riding just ABSOLUTELY saves your sanity.

As a kid I would only use Goombario as a partner because he was my favorite. The game was so hard and I didn't know why.
Bow and Chapter 3 being the highest is of no surprise - even though Bow isn't my favorite, she's definitely super useful with high damage attacks, useful support abilities and she's also got a very evocative personality. For me, I don't really like the Forever Forest, I think it's a little weak, but the Boo Mansion, Gusty Gulch and Tubba Blubba's Castle more than make up for it. Overall, it's a very dynamic level with powerful adventuring feel. Tubba Blubba being so entwined with the chapter makes it stand out as really good, since we see the baddy front and center. That's how you make a memorable antagonist.
Toad Town is similarly well liked but also controversial because it's much less dynamic. But it's really interesting to have the dungeon interact with the main town. Personally, I also feel that the shy guys as a whole are a great group antagonist and the boss theme is really cool too.
I personally love Watt, and I can see a lot of people agree, but I wasn't expecting so much backlash as well. I'm guessing the people who like her least take issue with the fact that her field ability is by far the worst one. That I agree with, but she's cute, she's useful in battle with great support and defense-bypassing. I picked her as my favorite
Prologue being disliked was no surprise to me - it's not a bad intro, but I always want to skip it on repeat playthroughs because it's both braindead with no action commands and long and boring, just a straight line.
As for Flower Fields, I think it's right in the "lull" period of the game, and by that I mean that it's at the point of the game where everything starts to feel more routine and less epic after that big volcanic finale of the last chapter. The hub and spoke design of the chapter is a little uninteresting, the entire thing is fetch quests, and it probably has the least dynamic feel of any of the chapters other than the prologue, since almost all of it is in the same grassy fields. It's not a bad chapter (imo), but it's easy to see why it's not exciting to a lot of people.
As for Lakilester, I do like him since his hover ability is nice (the speed boost redundant, though, because of Speedy Spin), but yes, I agree with your take that you get him too late, and he doesn't really bring enough to the table. This is why usually games with late-joining party members will make them OP to compensate for the fact that they have some catching up to do. Maybe they should have had you fight Lakilester a few times before chapter 6?

If we are going on sheer usefulness in battle Bow, Watt, and Sushie are the best with Parakarry being the worst. Bow has high single target damage for enemies with no defense along with Out of Sight. All of Watt's attacking moves pierce defense and has one of the few moves that can inflict a status on all enemies. Sushie has water elemented attacks, can raise defense, and Tidal Wave when it doesn't crash the game can do bullshit amounts of damage and hits all enemies. All of Parakarry's moves are just out classed Sky Dive does the same damage as Spiny Flip but can't hit flaming enemies, Shell Shot is his best move but has one of the hardest action commands in the game, Air Lift is out shined by Spook and Hurricane, and Air Raid just actually blows total ass, use Tidal Wave or Power Bomb or literally any other move. Why did I type a long winded paragraph about partner viability in an extremely easy 20 year old rpg, IDK.
I recently beat this game on the Switch. It was awesome. I loved every partner I've had and it got more interesting as I progressed through the chapters. Definitely a great introduction for the series.
I would say my favorite partner is Bombette for ground enemies, and Parakerry in a general sense. His 2nd and 4th special attacks are goated from what I got out of my blind playthrough. Gosh, I loved that game.

I don't know if you've played Kingdom Hearts but it's be really cool if you did favorite keyblade, worlds, and party members! Since there's so many games in the series too it'd be able to last long as well.

Even tho I am kinda suprised about the low ranking of chapter 6, it is... very understandable.
The whole chapter required you to constantly back track in all kinds of directons, getting quest item after quest item. You could get lost so easily or even worse: You just could not play for a few days and forgot what was next or where to go.
Totally gobsmacked that Flower Fields got such a low score! I can understand why because it basically plays as a fetch quest chapter (like Chapter 7 from TTYD), but for me the music, story, and characters are so iconic! It's such a dynamic area in terms of music and individual character building with all the flowers you meet. Maybe it's Fluff N Puff that lowers the score because he's a rough boss.
I think a great, larger scale of a survey would be Golden Eye for the Nintendo 64. Do everyone's favorite levels, preferred weapon, and maybe for fun favorite cheat code. I don't think putting favorite multiplayer character would be fun in a stat based video, for the sole purpose of Odd Job. I just feel that 007 was such a big game for a lot of people and you would get a lot of responses with some interesting numbers.
My paper Mario chapter tier list:
Prologue: it's just there...to be there I guess.
Chapter 1: storming koopa bros fortress: the koopa bros have a great personality, kooper is also a great partner too. A fun and simple chapter.
Chapter 2 the mystery of dry dry ruins: was clueless at first but you will get there to the end of the chapter, paracarry lacks personality though yet he is a strong character.
Chapter 3: the invincible tubba blubba: arguably the best chapter in the series. I love how you just can't beat the guy until you figure out why, bow is also a brat but a great character.
Chapter 4 trials in the toy box: I like this chapter because you have to help out the civilians of toad town to progress. The partner *I forgot their name* gets introduced quite late into the story, so I didn't feel attached to them. Also the optional mini-boss is hard to beat (he is stronger than the actual boss) but you can give his some lemon candy to get his chest :D. The boss is alright tho.
Chapter 5 hot hot days on lava lava island: sushi is the worst nanny, I didn't like exploring the jungle. I like the volcano thought. also, professor kolorado is a clown. But the boss is great.
Chapter 6 *forgot the title*: the flower are shmucks. They literally make us do chores for them. The whole chapter is just back tracking. I like lakilester though, he is a little irrelevant tho. Huff 'n' puff is my favourite boss in the game due to his challenge on the player and his wacky gimmick.
Chapter 7 a star spirit on ice: an irrelevant chapter imo, but the murder case was fun and intriguing. The mayor's wife must drown in the sea. The crystal palace was fun to explore and the boss was a challenge but was alright.
Chapter 8 a star powered showdown: honestly, Im lucky that I didn't get to fight the 3 shy guys. Bowser's castle felt like a Zelda dungeon. I love how you could fight Kami koopa with twink and peach. Also bowser was a challenge and beating himfelt like a reward.

I made a randomizer that makes offensive moves/badges (increases how much damage you do in battle) more expensive and defensive moves/badges (decreases how much damage you/enemies do in a battle) cheaper or vice versa and in offensive mode bow is the best because enemies often have negative defense so her fan smack can do 15 20 or 25 damage and outta sight can save you from the increased damage enemies do. In defensive mode watt is the best because watt pierces the higher defenses to do 5 damage with no FP used and the mega/power shock have a much better chance of working.
Although it is a very forgotten game an idea for a survey for the N64 game Re-Volt.

So based on the ratings for the chapters, Paper Mario starts slow, then picks up pretty quickly. It dips a bit, but then it skyrockets in quality for a good few chapters before hitting a plateau, holding that high for a moment, and then *absolutely plummeting* into the dirt for a full chapter. Luckily it picks itself back up and hits a high note but it never quite hits the same high it did during chapter 3-4.
I'd make arguments for why chapter 6 got ranked so low but I think almost every argument I can make against 6, 4 also does (just a big circle, lots of backtracking, etc). So I think 4 just has aesthetic and cute Shy Guys and that alone makes it better for people. It's always interesting how such minor things can make something so beloved.

I was half expecting Goompa, Twink, and Goombaria to be listed at some point just for the sake of it. Of course since you can't normally obtain them I understand their absence.

I’m confused about the equation that’s being used.
You take the likes add the favorite times 2, and add the dislikes times -2.
It brings the formula to this:
Score = L + 2F + (-2)D
For clarity:
L = Like
F = Favorite
D = Least Favorite
So we can simplify it to:
Score = L + 2F - 2D
Score = L + 2(F - D)
What was your idea behind this equation? Really curious about it. Sorry if I missed an explanation in an earlier video/explanation.

Shocked Shy Guy's Toybox was rated as the number two best when it has most of the same issues as Flower Fields. Annoying music, constant backtracking and fetchquests.
Shy Guy's Toy Box has some funny dialogue, so I get it being higher, but that much higher? Kinda surprising.
You can do a survey of every single zelda game, ranking dungeons and maybe items, or something to do with the gimmick of that zelda game(like the islands on ww, the seasons from oracle of seasons or the trials of the silent realm from ss)

But it makes sense not to do it, most people don't like that game because of the tank controls but it's not that bad once you know how to work it. L and R are your friends in that game.

It's not at all surprising that Lakilester is ranked so low. Not only is he the last partner you get, he also has no niche. His and Watt's basic attacks are both good for attacking anything regardless of defenses, the only difference is that Lakilester can hit firey enemies, fairly useless since most of those appeared the chapter before you get him, and Watt can pierce defense, very useful throughout the game. His Spiny Surge is a weaker and cheaper form of Bombette's Mega Bomb or Sushie's Tidal Wave, but if you're trying to damage all enemies then it's usually to try and clear them all in a single round which Lakilester can't do with his low power. Plus, if the enemies are all grounded then Bombette's Power Bomb or any of Kooper's attacks are way better. Cloud Nine is unique, but also not very good. Outta Sight is a much better option since it guarantees a single attack will miss rather than relying on luck for several turns. And finally, while Hurricane may be better than Spook (and I don't actually know if that's the case for the record), it's not as good as either Up and Away or just using the Run command. It's also completely useless on bosses.
If Lakilester and Bombette switched places in the order you get them, then Lakilester would probably get some more love for having the only full multitarget attack for most of the game even if it is weak. But when you get him normally everything he can do other partners you already have can do better. He can't even fly over water outside of combat which would have given him an honorary spot on my team since Sushie's swimming is too slow.

Chapter 6 makes sense as the worst with all of those awkward corridor hallways. It has the best boss, but I don't know how much people were taking that into account.
I find it weirder people like chapter 4 so much when it is also made up of a bunch of corridor hallways.
I don't get the hate for chapter 6.
I recently played the game with to friends who never played it - I told them beforehand about chapter 6 being the most hated.
As we came to actually playing it they just didn't understand it.
They really liked it.
One even said "how can u hate this? The asthetic and storytelling is amazing! the music is real treat, too"
And I didn't tell them about looking for the bobulb seeds.
They are not actually that hard to miss.
You need to actually go out of ur way to not explore the world and vigourously stick to the main path to miss them.
So I really don't get why it's a problem.
-They are not hard to find
-The Game nudges u in their direction as early as chapter 2
-They don't even block space in ur inventory (like Quest Items in Diablo 2 and other games did)
-the Extra time to collect them is minimal (if you do it while completing previous chapters qs the game intended)
-The first Bubulb takes novextra travel time/distance u just need to talk to him
-The one on Mt Rugged takes like 10 extra seconds to collect
-The one in forever forest takes like 3-6 seconds depending on in which direction u go
-Finally the one on the island takes around a solid Minute or two...
So we're talking about 2,5 minutes max. here.
How is this Bad game Design?
Because it requires the extra 'effort' to explore at least a bit and talk to some npcs? (Which u should do in a game like this anyways)
