I love love love the part when the girl from the Chantrellines is enjoying the song!! Those 2 were the cutest thing from this film, I wish they could've gotten more screen time!
Man, this is such a perfectly iconic 90s movie. It's really obvious how much time and effort the actors put into not only learning the instruments, but the actual songs. It's clear that Tom Everett Scott could easily play these songs live on a drum kit, but less obvious are the subtle hand movements that the rest of them have while playing - it's not as easy to pick out for Johnathon Schaech because he was playing rhythm in this particular song and basically just strumming in time, but Steve Zahn has really specific movements that indicate bends/chord changes - something often lacking when actors play instruments on film - and Ethan Embry is straight up nailing the bass. That's a pretty complicated bass line but his finger strumming patterns as well as his left hand sliding up and down the neck really make it obvious that he knows how to play the instrument as well as the actual songs (mostly because he already knew how to play the bass before he was cast for the part, but he still had to learn the songs). I've always appreciated that about this movie - the actors really committed to learning it all, top to bottom.
Tom Hanks said they got good enough to play live in a concert. I believe the songs were recorded with session musicians but Hanks wanted the actors to learn how to play the songs for the realism you're talking about. They were way better than the Monkees.
This is still one my all time fave movies of the 90s. Makes me happy every time I watch it. I like this song as much as the title song "THAT THING YOU DO". I really like how T.B. Player that little strut across the record label [0:21 - 0:27].
They’re definitely not playing what you hear in this scene, but you’re right they’ve got the right finger placement and technique, which is all that matters in filming with a backing track.
@@billygarcia9885 actually they did play those songs for the filming. The track was later dubbed in, but for the realism, Hanks wanted their mouths, finger placement, and drumming to be accurate, so he made them learn those songs for the shots.
Tom Hank's character was my favorite in this movie. It was life changing for them, but for him this was just another group to help out. Why I always loved 1:15 where his character even gets into it.
This has actually been a favorite movie of mine from the first viewing! Having played in several RnR bands throughout the 60’s and 70’s (and still an enthusiastic music gear head today), I was pleasantly surprised at the detail that was put into selecting very specific and correct musical instruments and equipment throughout the movie. From the Sears amps at the beginning through the use of Fender “black face” amps at the end of the movie - it was a happy ride through the rock n roll gear of that time (at least the Fender brand😉). And this song was an especially appropriate selection for the music track!
Oh, yeah! My first gig (as a guitarist) was 1965, in folk quartet. Things evolved, and blues and all that came along. So, I'm testifying to what you say: this band, and these songs, would have been hits at the time the movie represents so, so very well. The gear, the suits, all that. Tom Hanks has done many marvelous films, and this is near the top of my list!!!
Those stupid pickup covers on the P-bass! I remember a Guitar Player article from the mid-seventies where the great Chuck Rainey just rips into some of the choices made in the design of p-bass.
He's giving honor to the Beatles and Brian Epstein... almost identical to the scene from "The Beatles at Shea Stadium" There's other nods to Beatlemania throughout the movie.
This was such a great movie with great music and it's a clean movie that my granddaughter and her friends lived.i still listen to the songs.more movies should be like this
Written by singer/songwriters Scott Rogness and Rick Elias. They wrote most of The Wonders songs, except for the title track by Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne.
The implied evolution in the skills of The Bass Player (still cracks me up that they never give his name) is wonderful. At the Mercyhurst Talent Show, he's plucking away at whole notes on "That Thing You Do". By this point, he's (supposedly) playing some really nice lines. Their playing gets better and their axes get (a lot) better.
To be fair, at the talent show Guy surprised him with the faster pace of the song and he suddenly had to play his part at a much faster pace than what he’s used to.
This is one of my all time favourite movies. I love the fact that they all had to learn how to play their instruments for this movie. Spoiler alert for all you Breaking Bad fans. Look for Bryan Cranston in the film. He plays astronaut Gus Grissom. Here's another piece of trivia for you. Even though Guy replaces Chad when he broke his arm, Chad gets revenge by taking down his company in Boiler Room!!!
This is one of my favorite movies, and the soundtrack is probably one of the most up--beat, fun, and rockin' ever made. It totally captures the true spirit of Rock-and-Roll...

LOVE the twangy, Fender-tastic lead guitar in this song. Great job, Steve! Kickass bass playing by Ethan Embry, too. Especially considering he was barely 17 when they started filming and recording for the movie!!

Liv Tyler, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman: All the movies of ONE of them -- past, present & future -- stay; but the other three's flix all disappear forever, gone, never to be seen again; no copies survive. In one scene... this was the film. When Tom Hanks does the arm pump... Height of being a rockstar in the 1960s.... the Wonders would have totally crushed it in 1966. :D Films all have that "one scene" that the film was made around. For "The Wonders" - this is that scene.
Sometime in the early '80's, my dad did some photography work for the Pirahna Brothers in Chicago. This song was one of my favorites, but I seem to remember the lyrics being a little different. Either way, it's a great listen.

Bright, clean,crisp 60’s sound -fantastic
Everything is so period correct in this movie. The equipment, the vibe, it's one of my favorites.
Damn near flawless

How many of us would go to a Wonders concert if they went on tour? I bet it would be a sell out and one hell of a great time.

Best song in the movie. Blows "That Thing You Do" out of the water.
Absolutely!
You’re only saying it because they played “That Thing You Do” over and over and over again. But this song is pretty cool, though.
This song is my all time favorite ❣️
I love the shot at 1:16 where Tom Hanks is like, "Yes. Nailed it. I'm a scary judge of talent."
Should be a meme.

Actually, I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's this is not a bad song, would have been a hit record. Good songwriting for this movie. Thank you.
Yes, mostly by Adam Schleschinger of Fountains of Wayne, RIP last year due to COVID.
Best song in the movie!
The bass line in this song is great!
Sheldon Cooper??😅😅😅
Several of the songs in this movie would have been top ten back in the 60's.
