I was a teen in the 1960s, and I thought everything about this movie came off as authentic. Their looks, personalities, the music, the management (Tom Hanks character), the girlfriend (Liv Tyler character), all of it left me fascinated. I still enjoy listening to the music.
Quite possibly the most convincing fake band ever, and they look like they're having a blast. Any of the songs in that movie could have gotten serious radio play in 1964.
Lots of clips of this song online. This one is perfect. Ya get the entire song. Shots of Tom and especially Liv. They gotta be kidding with just how great this song is. Love it.
Jimmy's video rhythm is really well matched to the actual recording! I'm impressed!! These guys -- especially for actors who were rookie musicians -- were really good at this. I still want those blonde Fender amps!
Any guy that ever played in a band wanted to get that adulation from the crowd in this scene. Great movie, and pretty accurate story line. A sky rocket to the top only to fall back to earth. I loved seeing their 'lame' Asian cheap instruments soon turn into the fenders, and Rickenbacker stuff that I lusted over as a teen.
How many times do you go out to see a band, and they never even look at each other, as though they are five completely separate players who just happen to be on the same stage playing in the same key and time?
I think in the theatrical cut, the entire song of "That Thing You Do!" is only performed twice -- at the college battle of the bands and finally on the Hollywood TV Showcase. In between, only snippets of the song are performed, so it woudn't become totally over-monotonous to the audience. This take, from the Illinois State Fair just as "TTYD!" is going Top Ten and they are about to get whisked off the state fair tours, is intended to show how sharp and polished they had become in 3-4 months from dorky kids at the college talent show playing cheap department-store guitars, now they are playing fancy Fender Strats and Rickenbackers, instead of being awkward and clumsy, now all of them, even TB Player, are rocking around the stage with confidence.
Bass keeps ringing at the end, and they are unplugged and running off! In addition, there was a hard piece of rubber underneath that bridge cover designed to stop notes from ringing! Movie magic!
Well in the earlier clip from the movie of this song the bass player sounded as bad as Stu Sutcliffe and the sound balance was authentically bad but things have definitely improved. Tom Hanks must have been a fab four fan.

Even the instruments and amps, starting from the first play date, to this point. Great authenticity, which is VERY rare in these kinds of flickers ...
Does Anyone Think That This Could Be A Broadway Musical?
Tom Everett is a natural on the drums ....
Great song! The guys who actually recoded this song deserved more attention. Flawless rendition of one of the best songs from the 60's that never was!
WELL said, Mr. Chip ... well said.
Beach boys, Beatles, dave clark 5, all rolled into one. Yippee!!!
Makes me ... Glad All Over!
All the actors played their roles perfectly... Johnathon Schaech played Jimmy as the ultmate prick...
One of Tom Hanks best
because of the drummer...... this song hits a million pieces....2018 still.
bass, too. so well done.
The nerdiest guy off stage, is by far, the coolest guy on stage ... Semper Fidelis!
Along with Stillwater and Spinal tap, the best movie band ever.
Quite possibly the most convincing fake band ever, and they look like they're having a blast. Any of the songs in that movie could have gotten serious radio play in 1964.
662wc EXACTLY!!!
This song would have very likely been a hit- maybe a big one- in 64/65. I was there. They nail this in every way.
I agree. I was a kid in the 60s and I definitely would have listened to this on my little red AM transistor radio.
I thought all the songs should be declared instant oldies and played on those oldies stations.
From what I understand, they all had to learn how to play the instruments and actually played during the movie
Shades !
This movie and this song so worked.
Love the bass line on this song too!! It’s really pumping!! So good!!
Lots of clips of this song online. This one is perfect. Ya get the entire song. Shots of Tom and especially Liv. They gotta be kidding with just how great this song is. Love it.
Thanks, Ken!
"Lies" by the Knickerbockers. Same era, same sound, great song. Can't help but think that was the band they were emulating so well.
The "Bockers" were incredible.
You boys look great in the red. Have i told you that?
Hey wasn't that our fan? 😁
Jimmy's video rhythm is really well matched to the actual recording! I'm impressed!! These guys -- especially for actors who were rookie musicians -- were really good at this. I still want those blonde Fender amps!
I wouldn't mind having Lenny's guitar and amp.
The “oneders”
They all played, they were a band for the film, too bad they didn't stay together as a band. Great song!!!
What a knockout, enjoyed the rolliking rock n roll music for years, just can't get out of it, am 60 n I think am 20. Ha!
Check out the senior at 1:56 jammin to the beat behind Mr. White. Rock n Roll *is* ageless!

LOVE that authentic Fender Jazz bass with all the covers on!! And of course those cherry, blonde Fender amps ...
2018 and still love this song and movie! 🎼🎧👏
I love this movie and this song!
Extremely well-written hit!!
Enormous bass line in this, by the way ...
Really adds to the song here. Bass is outswinging the drums.
The actor “playing” the bass seems like he’s actually playing the bass and having a great time doing it!! Makes me want to play the bass!!
This is cinematic magic my friends!
I LOVE this song :)
A very overlooked song
I was there. These guys are good.
All that's missing is the CKLW bumper -- I could easily imagine hearing this back when I was a kid in the 60s.
Love this song.
Nice touch ethan embry with the mccartny head bobble. I seent it
excellent song
takes me back reminds me of happy days and the fonz HEY
Great movie
GOD DAMN, this is so good!
love this song
Uma das melhores músicas 🎵👏👏
Sure would love to have those Fender Showmans!! Woops. I think they're Bandmasters ...
How many times do you go out to see a band, and they never even look at each other, as though they are five completely separate players who just happen to be on the same stage playing in the same key and time?
Love 😍
This is a deleted scene, they sang "Dance With Me Tonight" in this venue.
Pretty cool movie, it'll be okay to do a sequel 20 years after the break up of the group which will put them in the eighties.
I love that they chose to use the '50s rock and roll snare beat on this.
2018 still love this song
Amo esse filme ❤️
Legit thought this was a real band, searched for it and realized it’s a fictional band...

Fender Strat? How about Fender Jaguar, the coolest of the Fenders!
Agreed, IIRC. Very first version was the best, because it was faster.
Bass keeps ringing at the end, and they are unplugged and running off! In addition, there was a hard piece of rubber underneath that bridge cover designed to stop notes from ringing! Movie magic!
Its a shame this group broke up. :)
Liv tyler my god!
Wasn't she GORGEOUS in this movie? Good grief, what a doll!
Wild terrace
Must be before Jimmy thought White was a Liar.
Never saw this clip in its entire unedited form
I'm pretty sure that scene is from the Illinois state fair and is not in the movie
I doubt Jimmy could have gotten his hands on that model of Rickenbacker 12 string in 1964.
Which one is it? Roger McGuinn had a Rickenbacker 12 string ... can't remember which one right now.
2019! 😁🎧🎼🎛❤️👍
I just come here to watch Liv Tyler's pretty face...
the Candy Butchers.. great stuff... and that opening is taken from a Pixies song.
Mike Viola and Todd Foulsham. Todd is a friend and neighbor.
I wonder what that Rickenbacker cost back then?
In case you don't know, lead vocals are by power pop legend Mike Viola. Check him the fuck out.
John Mayer on drums??
Well in the earlier clip from the movie of this song the bass player sounded as bad as Stu Sutcliffe and the sound balance was authentically bad but things have definitely improved. Tom Hanks must have been a fab four fan.
I'd like to hear the song that the black girl singers sang from this movie.
the drummer look like tom hanks. :p
And Tom Everett Scott almost didn't get the part because of that.
Is that Abe Vigoda at 1:56 LOL!
qual o nome desse filme?
See the description, Ronaldo! :)

good job mr. Epstein
Anybody ever claim to be the lead singer on this song?
Tonetwisters That's Mike Viola on lead vocals. He also co-wrote the song.
Tonetwisters, see the description! :)
Different lead vocal from the very first one??
This version is a bit too slow ...
Fake band? They fooled me!
Love this Song!
Love this Song!
