SO HAPPY THAT THIS IS WHAT GAVE RIZ AHMED HIS FIRST OSCAR! Well deserved, because this live-action short was so powerful and moving in just under 12 minutes. From one Pakistani to another, congrats again Riz

No casulties where in my home but I experienced this as a 13 year Muslim girl in Bosnia during a genocide. Was put in a concentration camp but luckily we returned to our house.
Amazing work Riz and the crew, let it be made into a long feature film.

Only a few times do we ever come across a piece of art or film that just leaves us breathless. This was one of the films. A message that needs no spelling out and a story that is so real because it is so real.

The acting is so fucking good. I don't know if I've seen such quality ever. It almost feels like a reality show where the camera man is following them around, because the interactions are so genuine, from every person in this movie
    Good fucking job

This broke my heart because they looked like me. They could’ve been my family.
    Their pain is my pain.
This was beautiful and hit too close to home.
When I hear “go back to where you came from” or ppl shitting on the conditions of my “homeland” I want to show them this.
That this is my homeland and this is a reality we have to face cuz we’re brown. Cuz we don’t look like you.
Does that make us any less than you?

  • @musically_insane

I am speechless. Had I been watching this film at any other juncture, I would have shrugged this off as something too far fetched, something almost fantastical. I know at points in history this has been the reality for a lot of people, but I had come to believe that we had moved past those days and were conscious to never hark back into those times. But now, now the world feels like a ticking time bomb. After everything that has happened in India over the course of the past couple of years, this feels not something impending, but a portrait of a moment very entrenched in today. Perhaps, this has already happened. In Delhi. In Kashmir.
The weird thing is, the chances of me being the target of such persecution is slim to none, whether I am in America or whether I am in India (where I am the part of the hegemony). So then my conundrum isn't existential. The privilege of my last name is a compound with walls high enough to shield me from whatever is happening outside in the name of MY religion. But it is enraging, blood curdling... to see what some fanatics are doing to the people of my country. It's made me disillusioned of the country I was so proud of having been born in. It's made me disdainful that a country nurtured by the blood and sweat of people of all different faiths has become so violently indifferent to the plight and pain of my Muslim and Dalit and Christian brothers and sisters.
I don't know what to do. I feel so helpless. I feel so angry. But I feel hollow. I feel like a fraud. Am I passive because this system is truly benefitting me and on some subconscious level, I have digested and accepted it because it isn't existential for me. Or am I passive because I have given up after seeing so many people around me that I loved and cared spew the venom of hatred and divisiveness and pigeonhole me as the one who has been brainwashed by the liberal elite. If i can't even convince the people around me who I've known all my life about the fallacy of their beliefs, then what hope is there at all? How can I bring about a change?
I can't relate to a lot of themes that you speak about in your album, (though I try to empathize). Maybe because I had always been very secure about where I was from. Maybe because I was never questioned about how Indian am I. But what really resonated with me was the fact that I too do not recognize the country I grew up in anymore. I too feel disillusioned by my country. It feels as if I've been given an ultimatum: either I accept the saffron tinged India and learn to live with it or leave. That I choose to be Indian the way Indian is defined in the eyes of the majoritarians or risk being branded as anti-national.
I don't know if you will ever read this, Riz. But I want you to know that your art speaks to me and and to so many others... and that it holds substance. It is much needed in these times. I am nowhere near as talented as you, I am nowhere near as driven as you, but I am at a personal crossroads where I have to choose whether I want to commit myself to a career in the arts. If I do end up walking down that road, you will be my guiding light. I want my work to move people like yours moved me. I want my work to have meaning like yours does. I look up to you so much, and with every new thing you release, you reaffirm my choice to support your work. I hope these dark times pass and we are greeted by pink skies soon. In the meantime, I will try to do whatever I possibly can to prevent a scenario of this sort from furthering any more. And I will look forward to every new piece of art that you release and try to be one of your loudest cheerleaders. If I am lucky, may be someday I can meet you personally and convey my appreciation. Thank you. This hit me hard.

Hey brother. This made me cry so hard. Although this story is set in Britain, I could see the universality of the situation that was represented. The recent riots in Delhi where many Muslims and a few marginalised Hindus were brutally murdered and stripped of their only homes by the majoritarian regime to which the police turned a blind eye makes this even more evident that we're heading towards a dangerous future.
    Let peace prevail.
