Daniel, I don't have a lot of experience with Texas whisky. Do you find that as the bottle level decreases the whisky changes as much as it can in single malts from Scotland?
Also I was looking at all the different balcones expressions and I really wish I could get my hands on a bottle of Hechiceros! I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any recommendations?
So glad you reviewed this! Lineage showed up for the first time this month in my local liquor store. One thing you didn't mention: at least up here in Oklahoma, it's just over half the price of the Balcones Texas Single Malt (which I love and a bottle of which is in my cabinet). I haven't yet tried the Lineage, but at its very reasonable price-point, I definitely will. If it's anywhere near as good as you suggest, it's a steal especially for an American craft malt. fwiw, both the Balcones Pot Still Bourbon, which you mentioned in this review, and the Balcones Rye, which is bottled at a more typically high for Balcones ABV, go for around the price of the Lineage, whereas the Rumble and Brimstone, which we also regularly get up here, are priced more like the Texas Single Malt. Not sure what they sell the Baby Blue (the last of the regularly available Balconeses in my neck of the woods) for.
I bought and tried Balcones for the 1st time last week. I randomly picked the Texas single malt. I was super impressed and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was thinking about getting the Lineage next and you guys just made my mind up for me.
Thanks guys for the laughs and advice/input/commentary on whisk(e)y. I got into the world of “strong spirits” about 4 years ago with some good friends, but it was more to the extent of taking shots of budget whisk(e)y like Knob Creek or Monkey Shoulder. Your channel really opened up the world of whisk(e)y for me and helped me find a more enjoyable experience. I just purchased and tasted my first bottle of Laphroig 10 and to my surprise, actually enjoyed it very much! So thanks again and cheers to you!
So I just bought a bottle of this and I’m very impressed! This is a great single malt! Being from Colorado, I still love my Stranahans Cask Strength but Balcones Lineage is just wow!
I got the Balcones Gift box. It came with lineage, the bourbon, 1 other and the glen cairn glass. I don't understand what I don't like about it. It has a medicinal or dark cherry cough drop. I can't place the taste, but I don't like it. Has it gone bad or am I just not a big fan of the whole Balcones line. I tasted it to some extent in all 3. It is also like oily or waxy.
I recently tried Laphroaig Quarter Cask, as my first smoky Scotch, and to me, it tasted like a costal tire fire. But somehow, I wasn't mad about it. I just picked up a bottle for myself
Lol 👍🏻 Daniel & Rex did a whisky noob tastes a countdown of whiskies a while back, and the noob described Laphroaig 10 as burning trash on the beach. Laphroaig 10 was my first smoky Scotch, and probably shouId’nt have been. I have changed my perspective on it from burning cow manure + Chloroseptic throat spray to more interesting than the competing Islay peaters. As your palate expands I would suggest you find a really well-stocked bar, and try Laphroaig Lore. I went by Daniel’s recommendation, and immediately bought a bottle. One of the best recommendations ever! I found it at an Austin Specs for just over $80 before the Trump 25% tariff price increase had found its way through through the supply pipeline to the shelf. Now Specs is showing it at $111-$119. I’d buy again for $100.
I’m adding to my whiskey collection and have read that some suggest using a wine preserver (gas mixture of CO2, Nitrogen, etc.) in the bottles once opened to maintain freshness. I have a very small collection so far. But when I look at your collection it’s massive. It’s this something you do or would recommend doing? Does this need to be done if you drink a bottle in a timely manner?
At the aforementioned price point, I would strongly consider the Oban 14, or Dalmore scotch. The Munros are also definitely worth the price. Amazing scotch!
Set em up with a bottle of JW Green and a Redbreast 15, two bottles for 150 and they can have a go of it without getting knocked on their ass. Either that or a Glendronach 18 Allardice?
You briefly mentioned pot still bourbon. I had a short conversation with Jason from The Mash and Drum and he said that when distilleries produce pot still bourbon they mention it on the label. I have never seen this. Have you? If you have a bottle that has that on the label can you hold it up to the camera?
I know I’m massively late on this recommendation, I’d highly recommend Talisker 10 for a slight smoky but introduction to brine and spice or Glendronach 15 Revival to try out sherried whisky for the first time. I think those dudes would love both!
Daniel, you should have mentioned the price: Spec’s lists it at ~$34 And its widely available, so there won’t be hoarding shenanigans like with Mirador. Edit: Just scored a bottle. I can taste a hint of honeydew, but i think that leads a Crème brûlée note that doesn’t devolve into caramel + vanilla which suggests that the new oak barrel contribution was not allowed to dominate. I like Mirador a little better, but this one is ~$34!
I havent made it to high proofs my highest being balcones single malt I believe it's in the 50s or it hittest at 60. Tho I feel not burn but I will burn in a 47% elijah craig or a evan Williams at 40% -43% or alcohols 46 proof is hella nice for me too. Like a whiskey at a proof% that my tongue likes I just can get so much out of it and its amazing. I was wondering is that normal for most people
Hey guys. I absolutely love the content and have been bingeing for days. As a newbie to whiskey. I've found that I really like sherry cask finished whiskeys of all kind. You guys should totally give your input and do a top ten list of sherry cask finished whiskeys. I'd love to hear your picks. Thanks guys. Keep up the great content and please stay safe in these tough times.
Not a well versed whiskey man myself but this one is by far my favorite from what I've tried I get berries in the beginning and chocolate at the end. 👌 Definitely recommend
I'd say Lineage is my favorite Balcones, but it's the only Balcones I've had - but incredibly distinctive, and really good, especially for the price. The next closest I've had is the (quasi)local Del Bac mesquite, even though I tend toward the cheaper (but even more local) SanTan malt.
Waiting for them to notice the double Laphroaig on the second shelf! LOL! I'd recommend either a MacAllan 15 triple cask, or Balvenie Carribean Cask 14.
Just had an idea (which may already exist) because of the request for a commencement whiskey recommendation but how difficult would it be to create something that would allow a person to enter a whiskey they liked and have it recommend a list of other whiskeys they might like as well? I'm thinking something along the lines of the way a media streaming algorithm works. "Since you liked _______, you may also like ________ due to..." You know-that old chestnut.
Can't believe you were recommending the Glenfiddich 12, I distinctly remember you not giving it a stellar review, saying it reminds you of apple juice.
I got a bottle of Balcones lineage months ago. I have been in Houston for about 10 years and will leave US soon. Feel weird if I leave without trying one of Balcones. It doesn't let me down, a great experience of super fruit punch I haven't experienced (although it 's not difficult to find something I haven't experienced because I enter the whiskey field this year, and yes, after watching so many vault videos). I would love to know what other Texas distilleries people would suggest. By the way, I usually drink Pearse Lyons reserve or Monkey shoulder recently, so I am mostly in the friendly or background whiskey territories.
Johnnie Walker guy: is this to be a Scotch only? There are American single malts both worthy, and not overpowering in any particular direction. You could get this Texas single malt cheap ~$34 if it is distributed or is orderable where you are. Balcones offers a Single Malt called Mirador, matured in second fill bourbon casks only, but its now twice the price of their Lineage Single Malt. Balcones offers a peated version of its original, new oak matured Texas Single Malt, for about the same price as Mirador. These all would leave you enough for a second bottle. How about subtle smokiness with abundant complex flavor? Westland Peated American Single Malt would impress with a balance of light smokiness, espresso, bittersweet chocolate, and tiny hints of vanilla and Crème brûlée, yet will leave your budget open to the possibility of a second bottle.
Glenfiddich 18, Talisker Distiller's Edition, or Oban Distiller's Edition for one bottle. For two bottles, choose Highland Park 12, Oban Old Bay, Talisker Storm or Glenmorangie 10 or maybe one of the two 12 year flavors.
9:58 Some may disagree but I like using Cardhu and a intro to scotch, and have done so very successfully. It is about $75-80 Canadian pesos where I am, so you could also add something in the $40 range to compare and keep it under $120. That's a good evening right there!
What’s up MB’s it’s my birthday today cracking open a bottle of angles envy bourbon to toast tonight. My roommates said they want to get me a bottle as a gift I was hoping for some suggestions want to get into so single malt scotches. Thanks
Hi guys, please buy the Brimstone from the Balcones, taste it and tell me if I should or I should not spend about $80 in Poland to taste it. Pliiiiiiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Thank you.
I love Balcones, but I just couldn't get into this one. There's a strong clove/cinnamon/woody note that was challenging to get past, and I found it too present to be able to dig into the more subtle nuances lurking underneath. I notice the same flavor in the Texas Single Malt (which I absolutely love), but it just didn't seem as evenly incorporated into the Lineage to me.
Ahh yes, sweet melon nectar scents, as if carried by a dry wind that screams intriguing complexity to all who cannot resist the pure amazement of such a rewarding challenge. But that's enough about me.
Auchentoshan Three Wood (~$70), Balvenie Double Wood (~$60) or Macallan 12 (~$60-$70); and Johnnie Walker Green (~$45), Oban 14 (~$50 @ Costco) or Highland Park 12 (~$55). Spend the change on some shortbread.
I'm trying to decide if I'm team Ardbeg or Laphroaig. The taste of Ardbeg is so enjoyable but the Laphroaig on the wall behind you gives me so many laughs. I reach for it before I watch. If it's up Laphroaig it is. If not Ardbeg wins the day.
Laphroaig slowly taking over the wall.
Emma, Does it take two Laphroaigs to replace Lagavulin 16?
Obviously!
Just twice as good
@@ars721 Now it's a matter of principle
Just waiting for Emma to just replace all of the whiskeys with Laphroaig
its happened
My girl is officially a Magnificent Bastard!!!
I've enjoyed that Lineage alot
Balcones Lineage is so good. Probably the best new cheaper American single malt this year. I love all the fruit on this whisky.
Great video guys, I just picked up a bottle of this and am thoroughly enjoying it.
Rex slowly losing his mind is half the fun
I wish I could thumbs up more than once!!!
i'd recommend Bruichladdich's Classic Laddie for around 50-60 bucks, then maybe a Macallan 12 (either regular or sherry cask).

How dare you, sir. I rather like the cantaloupe.
What are the two Laphroaigs up there? is one the Triple Wood Cask Strength?
This comment is three years old but whatever. Dunno if the wall is even up anymore but I see the standard 10 and laphroaig select.

Very nice indeed. Reminds me a bit of the Stranahans Blue Peak
I get a strong sour apple finish that is absolutely amazing! This bottle is amazing! One of my favorites!
Any MBs in the Denver CO area? I recently got mythology bourbon finished in sherry cask and it's awesome!
What do you all think is the best isle scotch for a beginner.
My go to scotch is the Grouse Smokey black. Easy to drink and easy on the wallet. Tastes like a blended Highland 12. Great brand.
Auchentoshen 3 wood - really well balanced whiskey. Could pick up a bottle of Buffalo trace or Elijah Craig to try for comparison of scotch to bourbon
Weird I just got this, but I didn’t get a lot of fruit notes. Just overwhelming wood notes.
My Recommendations: A/B compare -- Auchentoshan Three Wood and Glen Scotia Double Cask
If they dig the JW Black why mot go for a Clynelish, Caol Ila, or Ledaig?
Came for the top shelf content, enjoyed it far more thanks to the "got him!!!" 😂
I'm still waiting for the day Balcones sells in Iowa. Their rye is the top of my wishlist!

There's a definite peach note along side dried fruits that you would get in a scotch. A friend gave me a bottle and I think it's fantastic.

Just got back from a Hills, 90% sure this Balcones Lineage was cleaned out. Every thing else was fully stocked. Lineage might be a home run.

The pot still bourbon is amazing at its proof. Impressed. I doubt I'll see these bottles for Lineage in NY. But Balcones has a good presence by me.

Cardhu is good.
This needs to come to the UK already
I get a shortbread sandwich cookie with jam vibe from Lineage
This is very tasty indeed! I think I paid just $40 for this when I bought it.
Have you reviewed "Balcones Brimstone?" I know you've talked about it and you don't like it. But I can't find it in your reviews.
It's like adding liquid smoke to your whiskey. I didn't particularly like it myself. Just too overpowering
Was able to hold the glencairn for several seconds with my awesome suckage powers.

Whoever picks around the cantaloupe is an inferior being.
Love blue , baby blue, single malt and bourbon from them. The smoked one is a little too smokey!
Sounds like Benromach 10 or 15 would be a nice play to go.

Bowmore 15 - Darkest and a Balvenie Carribean Cask would be a good pair at that price point
