I’ve got a theory that what makes Tim’s playing appealing is that he appears not to have gone down the route of trying to achieve souped up level of alternate picking, or economy picking, or sweeping, or tapping, or legato or any of the other stuff that players hone in on. He seems to have just followed his ears, let his own technique develop, and has come up with a highly polsished, listenable and musical soloing style - a style which over the years has obviously made a big impact on non-guitarist artists and producers who kept hiring him. He hasn’t let ‘guitarisms’ get in the way of music.

Watching Tim's videos inspired me to purchase two Nobels ODR-1, one mini and one regular, and the Karma MTN-10. Both excellent pedals and I am always chaining drive pedals together to achieve different tones.
Excellent video as usual! Lately I’ve been running a JHS double barrel in front of a Wampler euphoria… Gives you up to four different gain stages, I only use three…Works really well for what I do…
Always great listening to one of my heroes play and talk about gear. I love that you’re even influenced by younger cats like Buk. Seeing you with Rick on the Living In Oz tour was a highlight. 🤙
I won't likely buy any pedals for a while since I picked up a Headrush, which I'll be exploring for a good long time, but I wanted to mention that I have pretty much fallen in love with the sound of chaining a couple of compressor pedals together (virtual pedals, obviously). I have tried multiple distortion pedals, but so far the compressors together is the sound that is knocking my socks off, highly recommended!
Getting your amp above bedroom level is probably a main consideration. A lot of pedals simply over power the amp sound at low volume and don't sound very nice.
Doesn't Knopfler play a Les Paul on 'Money For Nothing' instead of a Strat, though?! At least that's what the promo video clip and several live performance videos suggest. And on top of having the Tone rolled back on the guitar, there's also a slightly opened Wah-Wah pedal in that sound 🙂
Thank you for your humble approach to this! Been experimenting with a lot of my drives lately thanks to the inspiration from you and That Pedal Show! Got a Protein, Centura (Klone), and Ultraphonix, then XTS modded GE-7 last. Sometimes I’ll have RC booster after the drives before ge-7 for a general clean boost and shape the ge-7 for specific tones

Nobels ought to subsidize you. I don't know that I really *needed* any more overdrive pedals: I have a JB2 Angry Driver (in which you can stack a Boss Blues Driver and an Angry Charlie), a Mosky Golden Horse (Klon Clone), a Caline Pure Sky (Timmy clone that I really like) and a few others, and yes, I stack the Pure Sky and the Blues Driver part of the JB2, goosed with an Orange 2-Stroke, mainly to get my Webb Wilder tones (basically Roots Rock). But Webb's lead guitarist uses the OD1, and after this, I went to a couple more sites to give it a listen, and now I suddenly have one. (face paw)
Tim, I'm not ashamed to say you are my favorite Guitarist, and there's not enough room/time for me to tell you why, but you are! I just picked up playing the Gee-tar at a late age (I have played Drums, Bass Guitar, and Keyboards since I was 11 thanks to The Beatles :) ), but here's where I am. I'm trying to play as good as I can with as few effects as I can because I believe that as far as ME, the more effects one uses the more one can get away with sloppy playing, and that's not my goal :) So........................................................................................ If I want to start out with only one of the (5) pedals on this video, which one would you tell me to go with? I am just figuring out this way of handling things , I'm pretty certain it's the best way to go at this point. I'm not a tone chaser in the sense of I think it's about one amp or pedals that will give me the ultimate tone, I believe it's more about the hands at the end of the day but I've tried alot of gear ALOT looking to see if I could get Everything out of this or that amp or this or that guitar, it turns out the best stuff is the Simplest stuff plexi's or bassman based stuff, your 800 style amps ,basically 1 channel amps and stacking over drives and you can do anything you ever want I personally don't Believe because of what I've recently learned there are any limitations with this set up, I play alot of styles it's great. It's alot easier to find a tone your looking for like this verses trying to find an amp that does it all with out some pedal's there are amazing sounding amps that sound great but they are not versatile and when you set said amp up to that sweet spot it has, its not as easy to shape your tone with pedal's and becomes pretty boring. My opion is what we need is an amp that can get a clean light break up with the light break up deriving from the master volume and the overdrive or distortion pedals of your choice and the knowledge to know how to set those pedal's. I'm new to this method but so far I'm in this duh phase because it's taken me so long to discover this.

Have you ever used the crossover method of two overdrives or distortions in parallel? Lower frequencies thru one OD & higher frequencies thru the other OD / Distortions. I haven’t tried this yet but it sounds promising. I think Skunk used this technique. Thanks 🙏
I'm going to have to get another amp. My '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb("Reissue") won't break up at all even though it's marketed as an amp that breaks up earlier.
It is well known, that OD Pedals work all the best in front of an Amp, that is set to already deliver edginess itself. But what obout situations in smaller venues, when you can't push a miked amp (eg. a 15 watt one channel valveamp) into a nice breakup point? What pedal(s) may be most useful after the overdrives that can "clone" the missing amp's edginess? Maybe Greer LS or equivalents?
Stacking overdrives helps emulate a pushed amp, giving you the sustain and dirt we look for. You don’t need to push the amp. Instead, try pushing one pedal into another. I do think going through the loop would do the trick as well though. Treat the last gain pedal as if it were the amp and your amp as clean power. I’ve used a ts into a blues breaker to get the sustain and it worked well. The Greer stuff is great for this type of stacking. Experiment. I bet you’ll get what you want eventually.
Great if playing one song. I am a solo musician with my self-produced back tracks of covers. This would be mind boggling on stage as I roll through a set.
