We are a family that sticks together. We get mad at each there from tune to time, but we get over it. We except each other as we are. My Dad died in 1955 leaving my Mom with 4 small children. She raised us on her own. And also took in her brothers 2 kids after their mother died. She raised us all to respect ourselves and others. None of us are or ever were on drugs or alcohol. We all were hard working. We married, had children. And they had children, now the grandchildren are having kids. I have been married to the same man for 54 years. Mom is still alive and is now 94. I talk to her everyday and see her every week. We all gather vat her house for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day Easter, mother's Day, her Birthday and Fourth of July. There is 36 of us now..
It was a different time, people lived by a few basic rules. If you love someone, their looks are not important, what they do is, if you can imagine your life without them, you do not love enough. Food did not have to be fancy, it was seasonally available, if you had beef animals, you took one to a butcher, or did the job yourself. Preserved it and you ate all of the whole beast, no such thing as only the choice cuts. Everybody in the family had jobs to do. Adults in particular worked from Dawn to Dusk, simply to continue to survive, labour saving devices had not been invented in the early 1900s. Take-away meals were unheard of. Each person had a part to play in helping their family to survive. So people did their best to get along with everyone. You looked out for the betterment of others, if you could cope, so people could survive. Playing away was a huge betrayal, still is, just hurts everyone you know when it comes out in the open. But people today only live for themselves, not a care how much they hurt others. I've heard folks say no-one cares if they have affairs nowadays. The ones that get hurt the most is the kids, but they don't listen to the kids, who often have no words to explain their pain yet. So nowadays most people are traumatised by what happens around them, so they try not to care for anybody else anymore. We live in a morally bankrupt world.
Hey James, I was the one who suggested this one last week. When I heard you speaking so fondly of your grandfather, this song popped into my head. I knew you'd love it. I agree with everything you said too. This world has become so divided. Sadly that begins at home. If we could just learn to unite as a family once more, maybe that would start a ripple effect that spills over into our cities, then states, and ultimately our nation. You should look into being a peer support specialist. It's a job that will make you feel good helping others, and you have a heart of gold. It's easy to see, and you could help a lot of people.

Life is not easy now, I know. But it wasn't easy then, either. There were plenty of problems. Listen to "Eve of Destruction" sung by Barry McGuire to get a better idea of those times. For a better idea of families, at least those I identify with, listen to "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobby Gentry, or Janis Ian's "Society's Child". But yes, this song is great.
