Nitro & Cold Brew vs. Regular Coffee- Caffeine Levels (Coffee Review)
Nitro coffee is a unique type of coffee that’s cold-brewed and infused with nitrogen gas to improve both its taste and texture. Unlike regular coffee, it’s served directly from the tap and is enjoyed cold rather than hot - often touted as superior to regular coffee, both in terms of taste and texture, as well as the health benefits it supplies. As mentioned, cold-brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas is released through a pressurized valve with tiny holes - as high pressure forces the cold brew past a disc, it creates a creamy, stout-like effect. Adding nitrogen creates microbubbles that give it a frothier feel and a smoother drinking coffee than when you don't have the nitrogen added to it. Elemental nitrogen is a gas at atmospheric pressure and room temperature - chemically, it's dead, meaning it’s an inert gas and that it won't react with anything.
Note: The only way that it can harm you (except for the bends) is if it is present in a sufficiently high concentration so that it displaces oxygen.
The inertness of nitrogen was at least one of the reasons that nitro-coffee was invented, and chemically, it makes sense for two primary reasons:
Nitro coffee came about because carbonated coffee was initially attempted (and tasted terrible.) With carbonated coffee: When carbon dioxide is dissolved in water a small amount of carbonic acid is formed - acids have a sour taste and it tasted awful. Nitrogen has another benefit - solubility in water, more specifically, its lack thereof:
Since nitrogen doesn't dissolve in water until it is pressurized, it forms very small bubbles, which do not change the taste of the coffee but do affect the texture (it becomes creamy.)
Nitrogen provides another benefit, again because of its inertness:
It displaces oxygen, which oxidizes some of the chemicals in coffee, and this prevents it from spoiling.
However, simply spritzing a little nitrogen in coffee isn't going to do much, since enough oxygen will still exist in solution to spoil the coffee, but the pressurized nitrogen also gets rid of the oxygen in solution- a process called degassing, exposing coffee grounds to hot water releases oils that won’t dissolve at lower temperatures. These oils are full of acidic compounds that give coffee its famous bitter bite either by fully immersing the ground coffee in water or using a drip system. But because cold brew is made using water at room temperature (as opposed to about 200 degrees for hot coffee), the process is much slower, taking up to 24 hours in some cases.
Room temperature water extracts fewer water-soluble flavors from the coffee (which is why cold brew coffee is prized for its lack of bitterness), but there’s one thing it doesn’t extract less of: caffeine. In fact, the slow process extracts more caffeine than traditionally-brewed coffee. More caffeine can be extracted from coffee beans with hot water than with cold water - this would imply that hot coffee contains more caffeine than cold brew, which is made with cold water. This is because caffeine’s solubility is primary driven by temperature, such that at higher temperatures, significantly more caffeine will dissolve in solution than at cooler temperatures. If you are using the same brew-to-water ratios, the cold brew will definitely have less caffeine than hot. But, cold brew coffee is typically made with a higher ratio of coffee to water - 2 to 2 1/2 times more - which means it is stronger than if made with a more conventional coffee-to-water ratio.
However, cold brew is made as a concentrate that should be diluted with one part coffee to one part water or milk, which brings that caffeine level right back down - really depends on the maker
Starbucks example: A 16-ounce cold brew from Starbucks is reported to contain 200 mg of caffeine, while a hot 16-ounce coffee can contain anywhere from 260 to 360 mg, depending on the beans you choose.
There’s nothing to back up the claim that the nitrogen increases the caffeine content and/or enhances the uptake of it

Thomas. Besides the “frothiness” of nitro cold brew. Is there any benefit to nitro over standard cold brew? Like, does the nitrogen make the nutritional elements of coffee more bio-available or something? Is it worth getting a home nitro tap for it?
Also, I brew my own cold brew at home. Super easy and much cheaper than Starbucks.

I find that a little bit of ACV into a cup of coffee also eleminates the bitterness and makes bubbles. Even tho it makes it acid + acid; is it the same or similar process occuring with cold brew? Also; it seems like adding cacao powder removes the bitterness, and I heard cooking the coffee with egg white makes the toxins bind with egg and makes the coffee relatively purified (no bittness here as well). What is your opinion on these?

Even though the body can make carbs, does the influx of carbs help the muscles recover faster from workouts? Than just being in deep ketosis, eating low carbs and getting all the necessary vitamins and minerals and nutrients?
Not saying that I want to be out of ketosis forever, but would the help of carb cycling on the weeks basically the cyclical ketogenic diet (but healthy style) would that help more for muscle recovery?

I very highly recommend a cold brew pot. The lids are the only plastic, and you could get around using one for pouring. The other pieces are glass, and metal. If you want the coffee hot, you can heat it when you're ready to drink it. It's made in a French press, and I think you can use it for hot coffee, but I don't know how.

I have a question. I've recently started intermittent fasting, and since I usually get up around 5-8 a.m. and break my fast 12-2 p.m., sometimes due to work, I cannot match the time of workout right with the end of my fast so I have two choices.. to extend the fast till the end of the workout, or break the fast at the work. I decide for the first option as I want to maximize the insulin sensitivity, so I go to the gym after work and break the fast with oatmeal consisting of 100 g oats, 15 g flax seeds, 5 g coconut oil, half squezzed lemon juice, 10 g dates, one medium banana, one teaspoon apple cider vinegar and half teaspoon Himalayan salt. After I come home from the gym I don't have much time to end my feeding window as I have to go to sleep in order to prepare myself for getting up early for the job, so I have to consume larger meals in order to provide myself enough calories as I want to GAIN MUSCLE during eating window while aiding FAT LOSS during fasted state. So my question, how.. based on this lifestyle am I supposed to properly feed during feeding window, and what minerals I need to consume without breaking the fast during fasted state?

    • @ThomasDeLauerOfficial

Ghee makes it too oily for my liking, unless you want to blend it in to emulsify it (I'm too lazy to go to that trouble).
You could also try coconut oil, might flavor it a bit, though. For a different drink, I'll mash together some Cocoa powder, some coconut oil and a bit of Erythritol, making a paste of it. That will stir in quite well, but it's not really coffee after that, it is hot cocoa with coffee.

It wasn’t until I was about 33-35 when I started drinking coffee. I find that I don’t like store coffee anymore. Try a local roaster in your area. MUCH better flavor and you’ll be supporting a local business. I go with light roast because of flavor as well. Hope this helps you.

    • @Athena-xp4lt
      @Athena-xp4lt 5 років тому +1

Adding salt to the grounds is helpful. I'd recommend googling how much to use (if interested), as I only remember how many twists on my grinder.
I have also found that keto ("bulletproof") coffee is much easier on my stomach. I use heavy cream, coconut oil, ghee, and mct oil, but a lot of people use Kerrygold butter in their combo.
Cold brewed coffee is also much lower in acidity, but it limits your add-ins to things that will stay liquid in cold.

Thanks for answering. I ask because I’ve dropped 65 lbs, I’m 6’1”, and still 275. I was on keto without realizing it, and I lost the weight in about 5 months. Then I found your channel. It made me realize why the weight came off so fast as I was eating what I thought was right, veggies and meat, no bread or carbs and especially no processed foods. My body has changed and with another 65 lbs to go I’m hoping to build muscle but don’t think I can get to the point you are at as I am much older. I was just curious about your height as a comparison to myself. Great channel and info by the way.
