Let's 100% honest. In every ethnic group you got haters and racists. Human beings are a mess. So while for the most part all the groups got along, there were contingents i each group who were haters to the other. My mom called them West Indian haters. It wasn't say all black Americans are that, but they did exist. You also had the ones who hated Puerto Ricans too and it went the other way as well. So we shouldn't be surprised when we encounter people like Phase. We just need to keep their comments in the social context. One thing is for sure, Puerto Ricans were in The Bronx for most of the 20th century. Everybody listened to the same music on the radio, we lived in the same buildings, went to the same schools faced the same challenges. If you were West Indian, you were automatically classified as black by the government. If you were ambiguous looking like me, you was assumed to be Puerto Rican, until they heard you had an English last name. If you were dark skinned and had an Afro, you was black till they heard your last name or they heard you speaking Spanish. So how in the World could West Indians and Puerto Ricans not have been co-creators of something that evolved in the streets of the Bronx when all of us were in those streets? It was never about race. In our World view there were two types of people White people and us, black and Puerto Rican. We said black and Puerto Rican like you say Peanut Butter and Jelly. NOBODY considered Puerto Ricans white no matter how light they were and that's a fact!
If you were alive during the 70’s and 80’s you would understand VERY FEW PR or Caribbean had anything to do with Black Americans. That is fact not speculation. The fact THEY became more accepting of Black culture which is historically what occurs absolutely does not mean we are all kumbaya

Puerto Ricans only role in old School Hip Hop is pick up Bboying and added there style to it. But since the 80's they haven't been able to keep up with the progression of Hip Hop to today.
