    that was a great explanation. I have a factory made one that was made in the 1920-1940 (I have been told two different ages) I do love it because it was my grandfather's violin. It sounds really nice, not too loud believe it or not

    Daniel, I really appreciate your work. I would love to start making my own violins, since I love woodcraft and my family has been working with wood working since long ago. Do I know where I could find a good template with measures to start? Thank you!

    I heard a top professional violinist play a $90 violin, it sounded awesome! He didn't like playing that instrument but just the same it sounded good.

    • @angelicasmagic
      @angelicasmagic 7 років тому +1

      The instrument can only account for around half or even less than half of the quality of sound produced. The remainder fully depends on the player themselves. You can have the world's most prized violin but if the player doesn't know what they're doing it would still sound horrible.

    The same is true for many stringed instruments, including pianos. Some person in a position of authority managed to influence a university to purchase a Baldwin over a Steinway. They are both good pianos, but the Baldwin was a terrible choice for the hall's acoustics. When the player got to a certain point in the upper register, it sounded like a big heavy curtain had been drawn closed across the stage. It was an issue with standing waves cancelling each other out. I am unsure where exactly it was happening at first, but we ascertained the stage & the wings were aligned in such a way to just kill the upper register. It sounded awful. I build guitars, but I try to build a violin & a bow every year to stay sharp, so to speak. I may build a cello or a contra bass. I am working on an old Abraham Prescott bass now. I just finished an old American church bass (American version of a bass viol, I suppose). Great fun, and a true privilege to have such and instrument in the shop. Perhaps someday we can meet! It would be wonderful meeting a luthier who shares his expertise in the way you do. My uncle was very skilled at bow repairs and bow rehairing. I had scores of people tell me, he was the only person who could rehair a bow to their satisfaction, and other attempts never lasted as long or sounded as good as his work.

    As you explain this I realize my factory violin matches this description, my violin is very loud and I have to play with a practice mute, I even find the bow to be problematic. Although I'd love a handmade violin, I can't afford one (or even a slightly better violin), but I love playing violin so i'll continue on. Any advice on how to get the best out of a limited instrument?

    Would you say that the old trade violins that came out of workshops in Germany in the 19th and early 20th century are more like "handmade" violins or more like "factory" violins? I have one out of the Hermann workshop.

    I'm afraid it doesn't work like this.
    Factory made CNC violin have "proper" graduations maybe since 2010 or so.
    Problem of factory violins are those:
    1. Factory violins are made from cheap chinese wood which resonates different way then european tonewood (mostly on higher frequencies)
    2. they are rougly finished (with sandpaper and grinder), especially corners of the plates and bassbar tends to be thick and wrongly shaped
    3. they have thick synthentic varnish (only few have good quality oil varnish) and the glue is synthetic, which is not transfering sound as good as traditional hide glue
    4. they have poor setup, bad bridge, long soundpost (because proper soundpost would fall during transport) and bad strings (because good strings are expensive)
    All together, they have steel ugly tone with muted bass and screaming trebles.
    Just replacing soundpost with proper one, making new bridge, changing strings and sanding down synthetic varnish and applying oil varnish makes $130 cheap factory violin sounding like $400 violin and this is price range of decent student violins. The biggest limitation of cheap factory violins is chinese wood. You can't make $130 violin from european tonewood because just the material is worth $200 or more.

    Hello Daniel, is there a corporation follows similar procedure like luthier? What about Yamaha? I want to purchase something in range of $700-$800 and wonder if to get “student violin” from luthier or buy “commercial violin” from say Yamaha. Any advice? I play for 6 months, am 33yo, practice 1 hour every day and want sth better than gewapure violin set for 100€ :)
