Good balanced description. I have a Chinese made viola bought 15 years ago that sounds and looks as good if not better than many fellow amateur players instruments. There is a stigma about Chinese made but if you get beyond this and look at individual instrument qualities it is possible to get great sounding and playing affordable instruments
I recently got a very nice Chinese made intermediate level violin. The best way to choose a violin is to tell the luthier your price limit, then let them present to you a few violins you can afford without you knowing where the violins are made or what they cost, then try playing them. I ended up picking a Peter Guan new violin over an antique Saxon violin by sound only. Really looking forward to the sound development as I play it in - it already sounds amazing new, so it should sound fantastic in a few years
Hi there, yes this is the perfect way to choose an instrument! I personally love a good blindfold test, then you can only be swayed by sound and feel, and not by the look, price or country of origin. Love a good blind test with bows as well :-)
I bought a student Bunnell violin about 3.5 months ago, used. I don’t know where it was made, and I don’t care. It was set up properly. I like the way it sounds, and feels, and it isn’t homely. I may buy a better bow someday. But I’ll probably play this fiddle to sawdust.
I have owned Eastman guitars, a mandolin, and a violin. All instruments performed very well. I am currently evaluating Eastmans for a new violin. This videa was exceptionally objective and informative.
Good video...,I have an Italian violin made in Cremona...great instrument..but I have some Chinese made...and are not as good but they are 100 times cheaper and for the price very very good...
Thank you. Wood quality is important as well as the shape, sound post is very important. What I want to use on my violin are the silver winded strings as silver tends to produce sounds clearer while gold is more richer.
How to know just by looking at violin plate if it was made with high quality wood or highest quality wood? Is it possible to discern with eye only without meausuring with tools?
I have never played a violin before.I cannot afford a violin in the thousands of dollars.I am only 69 years old but I would eventually like to buy a good quality violin I know that sounds strange.Would you be able to give some advice please.
I've been cello shopping recently and I've noticed many lines of instruments made in China are marketed using names that sound decidedly Italian, German, or French. For example, SSC sells Schroeder instruments, which are crafted in China.
Hi there, yes you are correct! Many violin shops will import their own instruments from their preferred workshops in China and brand them with European-sounding names that become their 'home brands'. Some of our home brands are Kreisler, Schroeder, Stauffer, Jacquot. You can get violins made in europe? I hate it that violins are made in china.
