This video is super long but I really hope it is helpful - I discuss what comes in the Foundations A/B bundle, as well as take you through example lessons from A and B, then talk more about my personal experience with the program. Is it okay just to buy Level A at first? I just ordered level A. I’ll be using it for 2 kids so I added a extra workbook. Should I have bought a extra of anything else to be able to use it for 2?

I'm glad to see this as I have been working with Sing, Spell, Read & Write but I want to learn about this because SSR&W is out of print right now! Thanks! This is so nice for parents who are not teachers and for teachers who are often not even trained in any phonics, spelling, etc. Good for you!

What a great review! Thank you for being so clear about the reasons behind your opinions. I've learned how to read and write by writing that way, not with sight words, so that makes so much sense to me.

Nadia Thompson I’m so glad you found the review helpful and I hope it is a good program for your kiddos! Keep in mind that it takes a bit longer to teach them to read then other programs, but I think it teaches them so much better so I’m more than happy to be patient!

I love all your videos but especially this one! We love LOE. My husband is actually helping me with Foundations since I take care of everything else plus reading in Spanish. He says Denise Eide is a genius and he wishes public schools would use LOE. He works for the local Public School board :D
Of Numbers and Stars It is such a good program - it doesn’t teach them to read fast but it teaches with so much more depth that I know once he gets it ... he will truly understand it and not just have memorized a bunch of site words!! I agree, I would love to see more public schools pick it up!!

@@kimfeller9970 Yes! A lot of schools do use it :) I saw a beautiful testimony on UA-cam by a school Principal from either North or South Carolina.

Thank you. This is my 1st time hearing about this curriculum.... this I'd exactly what I've been looking for. My daughter will be in the Kindergarten grade for this new school year. She's currently 4 and will be 5 the end of August. She's been to prek, but I will be homeschooling her. This will work great for her.

We’ve been looking at this for phonics for all my kids after hearing that they are good for phonics teaching. My 4 year old is close to learning her letters and I’m not sure how we will teach her as I’ve taught it without a curriculum b4 but using a curriculum for her pre writing. We love sight words that make sense not just it says it. I’ve never taught cursive so will use a handwriting curriculum for my youngest. My other kids learnt the basics in school.

So glad I found your reviews! Our sons sound very similar in their learning approaches and our approaches to teaching seem similar as well! I tend to lean towards a classical/CM way but have been overwhelmed with what curriculums to choose for 1st grade and these were helpful so thank you very much!
I completely understand the curriculum overwhelm! I've found that I make a list of any interesting curriculum throughout the year and then I look at everything all at once and make a decision ... then I start a new list! It keeps me from feeling like I need to switch when I see something new and shiny! I love so many aspects of Charlotte Mason and Classical - there is so much good overlap!
What curriculums are you considering for 1st?
I am loving your videos!! I have never heard of this curriculum and I'm really impressed with the materials that come with the bundle. My son finished up Kinder at a private school, but I'm planning to homeschool for the upcoming school year. He is an advanced reader; however, I think mastering the phonograms you showed here is so essential. I'm unsure if I should jump into books C & D (I'm guessing that's the first grade level?) or start at B. I really want to implement the phonogram cards, but do the cards only come with Foundations B? Will you be doing a look through video similar to this but for C & D? Can you tell my brain is exploding with questions?? haha thank you!
Josephine Dipasupil It is a wonderful program! I’m not sure where the best place is to hop in, I know a lot of people start with B and work from there! You should try giving Logic of English a call - I hear their customer service is great!

Thank you for sharing your experience. My son will be 5 in Sept. He knows all his letters and the sounds. He also has read Bob books. I love that you broke down you feelings and experiences with your son. I’m still debating between cursive and manuscript. We’re looking to start next month.
We’ve decided not to put him in TK due to current state of our country. Do you recommend this writing program or should we try something else?
Jasmine Buera I love this program for its approach to phonics and spelling - but I think you can do really any program for handwriting! We use D’Nealian workbooks because it is a style that is between cursive and manuscript!
@@sciencemama Hi I'm new to homeschool, we decided to abstain from in person schooling due to Co-Vid 19. He's supposed to transition to PK4 which seems to be kindergarten. However, He's a young one. He'll be 5 in April 2021. Do you think this would be a good program for his age? They also teach cursive in their program. Is 4 and half too young for cursive? Help, thank you
Physhtail Swims Hi! You just answered the question I asked on the other video. I would say it depends on your kiddo - does he recognize all his letters? For my son, we started right when he turned 5 and he progressed pretty slowly at first but started to pick up a bit as we went. Honestly, I would say there is no need to rush. Last year with my preK4 daughter we did The Good and the Beautiful PreK as well as explore the code - to help her really get familiar with letters! Hope that helps!!

Hi! For pre-K, I kept things a bit simpler ... we did Explode the Code and just practiced letter recognition. For math we did some fun Mathematical Reasoning worksheets and the Preschool Math book by Kate Snow. For Kindergarten we started the Logic of English, Build Your Library and have switched to Singapore Dimensions KA/KB. How old are your kiddos?

Jenna Hyatt I would say we typically did about 20 minutes - then he would start pushing back on the reading and it would just become stressful, so we would stop!
We are leaning towards using LOE A for my 5 year old. You mentioned that you did AAR pre reading curriculum for your sons preschool. Do the they teach all the letter sounds as well (for example: a has 3 sounds)? I have a 3.5 year old that is interested in doing everything her big brother is but I’m not sure if these ready for LOE level A yet.
Also, what made you not choose to continue AAR with your son?
Vivian Watkins Honestly I think I heard of AAR first and I liked the sound of it - but then once I researched more, I found LOE and felt like it would be a better fit. I don’t believe they do teach all the sounds - but the pre-reading program is split into 3 sections ... upper case, lower case and then sounds. We did the first 2 sections and reviewed the posters often until I felt he could recognize the letters. Then we moved into LOE because I didn’t want to confuse him - I wanted to start with teaching all the letter sounds. I have a 4, almost 5 year old and this past year we went through The Good and the Beautiful preK - it was good too ... although I think I preferred AAR pre-reading. Hi! Thank you for your thorough review! We’re using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and though it’s working I’m worried that it’s missing a component. My question though is how long would you say you spend on each lesson? (I know you said you split them in half, right?) And also, does it draw him in? Like does it seem like he looks forward to the lesson?

I would say it is a more engaging program that TYCTR (which we tried a bit) because it has a lot of games and activities! I wouldn't say it is his most favorite program - he is just not enjoying the process of learning to read! LOE can be a bit intense because they are learning all the reasons why words are spelled a specific way, so sometimes it feels like we get bogged down ... but then we just break and do something like Explode the Code and early reader before hopping back into the program. Hope that helps!
Hello! Thank you so much for your review of LOE. I suspect that my son may have dyslexia, I don't think it is a severe case but he has been struggling with the reading program we have been using. He is behind in reading already so very reluctant to change and potentially set him back more, but we is no longer enjoying our current reading program and I desperately want him to love learning. This program has some similarities with CLE as far as teaching phonograms, rules, and use of macon/breve, ect but not as through as CLE. So thinking it may not be to different to adjust to, but this maybe just want is need to add the fun into learning which is lost at this time. I am also considering all about reading what in your opinion is the difference pros and cons to them both?...also another channel had mentioned that program is great with decoding words but not so much with helping with reading fluency do you have an opinion about that?
fredra Andrews I think LOE will definitely add more fun to reading - that is my sons favorite part, so I try and make sure we are doing at least one game a day (even if it isn’t assigned). I’ve also heard good things about AAR, I just liked that LOE was a more complete language arts program! I like that it integrates the spelling in. As for fluency - it maybe a bit slower, we haven’t really gotten that far. But I feel like it does such a great job of teaching the decoding that he will really understand the why behind reading that I’m ok going a bit slower!

So with the other levels of C,D do they also break down the lesson? Looking for something that helps me as a parent get through the teaching part and that can be used as practice for my son who has dyslexia. He’s been working with a specialist since 2nd grade and will be starting 5th grade homeschool. So I’m looking to mimic the exercises they would do so my son continues to exercise the sounds/blends/etc that he has problems with. Hoping to get your opinion and thank you for sharing this video!
Hi! Yes, C&D also break the lessons into a spelling section, phonemic awareness, comprehension etc!

Hi! I selected it because it is supposed to help them not mix up their letters because they don't have to lift the pencil - but it was a bit much for my son. We actually switched to a handwriting style called D'Nealian because my aunt who taught K/1st grade for 30 years recommended it and we love it!

Do you think this is an easy curriculum to “hop into” midway? We’re currently using good and the beautiful, but I’d like to switch to this part B. Is it possible to skip A in your opinion?
TheTrautFam Yes I think starting in B is really common - they even have a starter set for families starting out in B. I would check out their website I have a vague memory of an article addressing this exact thing 😀. We love LOE - such a good program!!

If my daughter can read cvc words do I start with B? Is A mostly just phonics and then B does silent E and two letter phonograms? I’m not loving Good and the Beautiful for teaching reading,it moves way to fast.
B might be a good place to start - I think they might have an assessment tool that could help!

Yes, you can definitely just get A!
Is it typical to do A&B simultaneously? For some reason I thought B built on A and was meant to be done after.
Sarah Grab Hi! Sorry, I hope I didn’t make things too confusing. You are correct - they start with A and once that is complete they roll into B. We just happened to do both over my sons kindergarten year so I tend to lump them together 🤷🏼♀️. Hope that helps clarify!
Can foundations A be used without the writing portion? I think we want to use handwriting without tears instead but I’m not sure if that could work?

Should I buy the All About Reading Pre reading before starting this program? My son is starting kindergarten but didn't do anything for preschool last year.
I wouldn't say you need to do the program, the AAR Pre-reading program is great for exposing kids to the letter and sounds ... but I used it mostly for letter recognition. LOE Foundations A goes through all of the alphabet, so your son will definitely be exposed to in then ... you just might need to go a bit slow and supplement with some letter recognition practice!

Yes! I use Explode the code prior to starting LOE and if we ever need a small break we will bust out some explore the code!!
@@sciencemama , I will use Explode the Code with my students who need another reinforcement/practice activity. Changing things up keeps learning exciting for our kids! :)

How often do you do this?I noticed it’s only 40 lessons, so do you do one lesson per week? Or do you spread 1 lesson out over 3 days? I just got Logic of English A for my struggling reader but now I’m thinking it may be way too easy for her. At least the first half is.. I’m not really sure what to do now 😕
Hi! I believe it is designed to do A&B in one year ... and potentially C&D the next. Although, most people do A&B one year and then C in one year and D in the last year. Hopefully that makes sense. If it is easy, go quickly or skip some things ... it gets harder fairly quickly :)

@@dominique573n9 This is definitely an "understand the rules" program - there are programs that will get your kiddo reading faster, but this one helps them really understand!

@@dominique573n9 Oh man, lots of people have success with it, but we actually ended up switching to All About Reading. Not because of dyslexia but because LOE moved a bit too fast for my son and didn't have enough practice. I have loved AAR, he is really starting to thrive ... but every kid is different and I know of people who use LOE with dyslexia. I think there is a homeschool YT channel that uses LOE for a dyslexic child ... Sarah Watson??

You mention that they use high frequency words instead of sight words. And that their high frequency words are only words that follow the rules they taught. But what about the words that don’t follow those rules… ones that have to be sight words by memory?
It's been a while since I've done Foundations but maybe the high frequency words also have some sight words? But, I feel like they were taught really early things like the shwa sounds so they could read the and a.
Would love to know why you choose cursive over manuscript? Have you encountered any issues with the cursive?

@@rhondal8887 Hi! I just picked up the Scott Foresman workbooks for D'Nealian Handwriting and skipped the handwriting sections in LOE.
