I have always loved this song mainly due to the guitar tone by Keith. You have replicated it almost perfectly! Thanks - I wish I could play half as good as you...
There is something I've always found so attractive in the pattern where he drops to A before proceeding through again to end up on B. It feels fulfilling.
It's a great sound, but it really has to be used sparingly. I listen to Little Feat and Paul Barrere used it on literally everything. Dude, it's just too much.
Dude - I've looked. I never saw it. But thanks again, just the same. One of my all time faves. I've got the basics worked out. But I'm about to pull my Tele out and see what little details you can show me!
Dude, that was awesome, and thank you so much. You make that look so easy, and once I’ve learned it thanks to you I’ve found out that it really is. I really dug your guitar. I have a Peavey Millennium bass in J style that I traded a guy a piece of gear worth less than $100 for. It sounds fantastic. It was the house bass for our jam band at the time, and now it’s my house bass. I sometimes write on it, or plug it in when there’s a few other guitar players over.
I agree, Shattered studio version is 1000 times better than the live versions. I love the sound of your Peavey. My first guitar was a Peavey Patriot with single blade pickups. That thing would not stay in tune, so I traded it (with some cash) for an Epiphone Casino.
One of my wife's fave Stones songs! Thanks for the brownie points JJ! I need em!! Will you be doing a video on your bootleg collection or Hockey jersey collections? Loved the t-shirt one ☝️
Was watching SNL many moons ago and the stones came on out of the blue, think they just finished a tour or something, they were drunk as hell, least Mick and Keith were, probably Ronnie to, that’s rock and roll
Thanks for the great lesson. I always thought this was a cool song. Like the shirt btw! If you want to, i can send you the Pinkpop ‘14 shirt from Holland. Cheers.
Greetings Sir James, just goofing, learning some of these old tunes, keep me from going Corona virus crazy, think I got the shit to, been fighting it off for a month, then again maybe smoking too much, need tested. In the mean time welljam w the stones, nice job on Monkey man by the way from the previous lesson, I agree 2nd fret capo, sounds right and easy to play, all those slide bits are cool, easy to learn , gotta speak fluently in the language of Keith, thanks bro
My favorite super cool Stones song. Took me weeks and many attempts to sing it, but I got it perfectly. Hard song 'cause Jagger throws the lines in, it seems, randomly. It's not sung on the rhythm. But I can do it now w/o thinking. It's on automatic. BTW I call it 'The New Yohk City National Anthem". It describes NYC to a "t". " I cant give it away on Seventh Avenue" (the garment district). "Shmata, shmata, shmata, shmata" (Yiddish for "rags"). Yep, it's all about NY. "My brains is battered, splattered all over . . .Manhattan". You did a pretty good job of it. I think in the record they run the riff thru a Leslie or something. It has a rolling sound. What you think ?
Nice lesion nice breakdown of Shattered - great pointing out the difference between the live versions of Shattered and the studio cut. When you read the instrumental credits on the record sleeve on Some Girls it shows so many different over dubs & percussion instruments and R. Wood on Bass & pedal Steel guitar and Keith on the solo. The Stones arranged their live versions with R. Wood playing the solo.. This is one of those songs the Stones have had a hard time recreating the studio sound and replicating that dirty murky sluggish sound live on stage.. I got to see the Stones in 1975 NYC MSG - 1989 Steel Wheels Shay Stadium too bad I never saw them play one of my favorites the Shaddoobie Song.. Go Ahead Bit The Big Apple Don't Mind The Maggots . Great Lesson ..
1978 I was 19 years old the single Miss You came out and The Grateful Dead put out Shakedown St, I said everyone sold their soul to disco. So I bought the single Miss You and the B-Side was Far Away Eyes, I said to myself OK a country song - then F.M. radio played the whole Some Girls album I looked up at the sky and said thank you there is a God !! Some Girls is a Killer album and Shattered was the icing on the cake. Peace.
Unless its a specific melody line within a solo, one may as well be free and not worry about every note on the original recording....I mean, how many of those guitarists play it the same way live? That's especially true with Page's solos....ample room for personal creativity, so long as you're playing in the same key, or at least the relative major/minor;)
The way Keith and Ron played in the studio version was great. The sound must have been cutting edge for 1977-1978 when they were recording Some Girls. Like you mentioned, you can watch the live performance specifically in Arizona in 1981 where Keith plays Shattered the was you explained with a tempo that's much faster than the studio version. It loses it's funky sound like you mentioned. Plus that was when the disco/punk/dance music stuff was going on in New York City, where the album was mainly recorded according to Mick.
Thanks for doing this stuff. I've been playing for years (and years) and like you I've never had any formal training. I've learned a lot from you. Oh, and by the way, my son went to Duke.
Tokabilitor is a monster but you are everyone's go to guy to learn a good version of a song quick. James James is to Tokabilitor as Keef is to Mick Taylor. Hopefully you'll still find that a compliment because you're awesome. I wish you and Tokabilitor would both come back!
I have a exp bought for $100 sounds great even with intonation problems just need me sober or a tech and it'll be perfect 🥰love it it feels so good in my hands i play it and let the les paul collect dust
Funny you should mention the cheap strat. I just bought tonight a squire Tele for $179. I just wanted something I could use for alternate tunings. It's not bad.
I have a Squier Telecaster lefty I got a year and a half ago or so, it actually sounds good, and it does stay in tune! I love it. The only thing is the bridge that comes stock isn't great, I had a loose high E saddle screw keeps coming loose, I replaced it with some better shorter ones, but still have to watch it. Replacing the bridge on it may be a big improvement. Or just get a better Tele, a Player one or whatever if you upgrade. I love the neck/action on the Squier that smooth blonde wood neck is great!
Nice to listen that cause I used to play over Still Live 81 , but I knew it was different in studio one...and you did that sound.. cheers mate..How many years playing over love you live and Still live innit????😉👍
I never got into Love You Live. The 75 and 76 tours were Mick at his most cartoonish. I feel like he got back on track by the time the 78 tour came around.
@@jamesjames9275 I know what you mean , those shows with the star, playing with the flying dick, runnig behind the pianist, but I do love the sound and the solos of the young Wood at the time, at leats the French Show ,most of it fills the Love you Live lp , oh man so many years playing the M.TaylorAlbums and then Wood .Thanks to write back. All the best.
Love you Live got an average review in All Music my favorite album reviewer and if you listen to the whole LA Forum '75 show Mick was SLURRING the lyrics man!!!
some of those old Peaveys are really good guitars.Actually I have a Korean made EXP Custom Tele style that is really very nice, super cheap too...I think I paid 250
I never played it like that, always did the notes, one two three one two three hammer on slide hammer on slide one two three one two three hammer on Slide, hell I don't know though I could be wrong
Tokabilitor is actually a female. She's a great guitar player she plays Mick Taylor parts almost perfect. Great video again man, really appreciate these.
This is the greatest thing I have learned about guitar on youtube in forever. I had to go back and look through videos I have watched 25 times all over again and now it makes sense to me.

I saw them in 1981 and you are spot on. One speed on every song
70's ...had to be there ...!
Love and hope and sex and dreams. You gotta give it to Stones. The masters!
So great to study the Ancient art of weaving, with Keith and Ronnie
Sounds like you nailed the solo to me. Amazing as usual.
Love when you toss out Stones trivia, great stuff. One day I'll find myself a Predator.
I personally love the up tempo of the live versions 79-81
Love the scene in the movie Lets spend the night together where they break into Shattered and you see the audience reaction in the Stadium!!!
Like on SNL, wish that was still on U tube.
Riffs just roll off Keith's fingers , so simple yet so effective.....................
I remember when the Rolling Stone reviewer called this song filler.
SOME GIRLS! Great album
"go ahead, bite the big apple"!-luv. it....thanx bro-peace
...don't mind the maggots!
Yes! I get frustrated that the studio version isn't the standard one played live.
Frickin Beast coming off that solo right back in the groove.
Yeah, that was truly solid
BOOM! . . nailed it. Sha-doobie.
Phase shifter is an underrated effect.
It's a great sound, but it really has to be used sparingly. I listen to Little Feat and Paul Barrere used it on literally everything. Dude, it's just too much.
@@jamesjames9275 Nice to know you're still out there kicking!
@jamesjames9275 it was the swooshie phase shifter seventies!
About time, man! I've been meaning to hit you up for a "Shattered" lesson for months! Thanks!
You could have watched the version I posted 7 years ago.
Dude - I've looked. I never saw it. But thanks again, just the same. One of my all time faves. I've got the basics worked out. But I'm about to pull my Tele out and see what little details you can show me!

My new favorite version of the song cuz I love the extra layer of guitar! Great job & keep up the good work! 👏👏👏👏
James Smith same here, when he plays let me go it sounds awesome with the extra layer of guitar👍
Was watching SNL many moons ago and the stones came on out of the blue, think they just finished a tour or something, they were drunk as hell, least Mick and Keith were, probably Ronnie to, that’s rock and roll
I remember it too.
No one does the Stones better than you! :)
Thank you for another super lesson on the Stones.

Robert Distefano shattered shattered
success...success...SUCCESSSS!
nailed the solo! love the end of it especially
My first electric guitar was a 91 or 92 Peavey Predator! Great guitars...mine was red.
Nice job as always....Hey my sister lives in Nederland Tx..

Very good!!! Less talk and just play. Most of us just need a head start and maybe some key notes. But very good! Best rendition I've found yet!

Totally agree, the studio chords are so much better. Great solo by Ron as well!
In the minority here but I preferred the live Shattered on Still Life big Still Life fan love Ernie Watts Saxophone playing!!!
another great example of a song that’s easy to play but so groovy
nice 👍🏻 thank you 🙏🏻
great job that was so bad ass un real love it.
