With the exception of only a few years, the Red Sox left field from 1940 until 2008 was incredibly Ted Williams to Yaz to Jimmy Rice to Mike Greenwell (severely underrated) to Manny Ramirez. Wow!
what michael conforto's stat line doesn't tell you is that he was one of the most unclutch players ever last season. idk if there's actual statistical evidence to back that up, but it felt like every time he came up in a big spot, he'd make an out. then in garbage time when the giants were losing by like 6 runs, he'd go deep. infuriating. on the bright side, heliot ramos rocks. i'm soooo excited to watch him for a full season and beyond. great video!
Can't really be mad about the Noot rating. It feels like he took a massive step back even though he really... didn't? We just kinda came accustomed to loving the guy but 10% better than average just isn't doin' it, and it would be great to see more from him.
Ian Happ really is underrated-you can pretty much lock him in every year for 120 OPS+ and 25ish home runs along with gold glove quality defense. No, he’s not interesting, but that kind of consistent production is very valuable.
@@elasmojones his past three seasons he has an OPS+ of 117, 118, and 120 while winning a gold glove each year. Maybe this is his ceiling, but it’s also his floor, and it’s a very good one. Calling him middle of the pack while being one of the best defensive left fielders and a solidly above average hitter is just straight up inaccurate.
Like Marc said, if he’s your 4th or 5th best hitter/player, you have a pretty good team. Last season, he was 2nd on the Cubs in bWAR and OPS+, and appropriately, the Cubs were mid AF. I’m a Cubs fan, but personally, not an Ian Happ fan. I don’t think defense in LF is all that valuable for someone who is just above average at the plate. He’s also just kind of the perfect representation of what the Cubs have been since winning the WS. He was every bit as much apart of the offensive failures that the Cubs had in postseason/late season games from 2017-20, yet never really got dragged for it by fans/media the same way that Rizzo, KB, or Baez did. It also doesn’t help that the one guy that left that Cubs core that’s still great is Kyle Schwarber; someone who plays the same position as Happ and is much worse defensively, but would probably be way more valuable to this current Cubs team if he had stayed instead of Happ. While Happ does have some pretty notable great defensive plays and his hitting numbers always seem to stay consistently above average, I can’t think of one moment at the plate that he’s had since becoming a regular everyday player that really sticks out as a signature moment like the aforementioned Rizzo, KB, and Baez all had plenty of. I’d gladly take Profar, Reynolds, or any of the LFs Marc listed ahead of him over him and not think twice about it. He’s good. He’s just not good enough. But hey, if he’s regularly leading off with Kyle Tucker hitting behind him, maybe he could be due for a breakout this season. Just please for the love of God, Happer, stop being so fucking boring.
I'll always be a fan of Lars Nootbaar if only because I love the fact that he changed his name for a branding opportunity. Lars was born Lars Van Den Berg, but after he took off in his career a Dutch company offered him a substantial contract to become the face of their candy division. Nimmo put up more WAR each of the last two seasons. He also had a significantly better OPS+ in each. The surface level stats are the same but it doesn't matter because GABP is much easier to hit in than Citi Field.
