- Today we do a walk thru of OpenSUSE Leap 15.6. This is their regular release version. We take a look at what makes this stable distribution a great base for anyone needing tools like the YaST control center combined with stable packages, and how OpenSUSE sets up a system great "out of the box."
FYI there is a rolling release version called Tumbleweed that has newer packages if that's what you are looking for.
It is boring, so is Linux Mint, so are other LTS / stable type distros. That doesn't mean bad. For a system that you need to rely on, it is very solid.
I am using Leap since the beginning of the year. It's stable, friendly and helpful community if you are looking for help. If you are looking for a stable system, don't have the time or nerves for tinkering a rolling release Leap is great choice. Alongside Mint I think is really good choice also for people migrating from Windows.
Interestingly, about three years ago, tumbleweed got about 30% slower than than its previous tumbleweed. I don't know why. Was the tumbleweed kernel compiled by gcc -O0 or something for debugging purpose? I checked the Leap 15.6 recently. On the other hand, Leap maintained its speed. That is, Leap 15.6 is about 30% faster than Tumbleweed.
For me if a piece of software is useful as daily driver then it's my thing to go.
It's been 1 month since I installed open suse 15.6 on my lenovo x270 laptop, it's very suitable. Previously I installed several other distros, it seems that open suse is very suitable for my laptop's specs. Especially after watching this video, it's even more solid. Thank you
I"m thinking of switching to it. I"ve been running ARTIX and love it- but I"m getting sick of it breaking with every tiny update that happens.. and want stability.. I tried LEAP (live) and I don't NEED that up to the second newness that everyone THINKS they need (but really DO NOT- that's just stupid).. With this not changing til DEC. 2025-- I may switch just for the stability!!!
I don't even mind the KDE 5.27-- because I've run the new version 6 and once set up - I see NO differences... and even got my TILING to work perfectly-- when one of the creators told me it wasn't possible!!
good job jeremy ! maybe you can do a video on tumbleweed with full desktop customization ?
Yes this is much needed please
Thank you
