  • Most try to find distortion by imitating other vocalists. This usually leads to frustration and burnout because we don't know what to listen for. Lauren shows you a better way!

Yes! Awesome seeing more of Lauren's technique! I think it's somewhat easier to figure it out based on hearing another woman doing it. I'm almost there. 😁

Ya, seeing a woman use the same approach is HUGE!

So many of your videos cover the same thing over and over, but every time there's some new insight. You explain things so clearly despite how difficult a thing it is to explain. Even bringing Lauren on board she's just sitting there agreeing with everything you've said in your videos. Learning distortion is different for everyone, but the path to it is very similar

Chris!! I owe it all to you. I was entirely self taught and I just wasn't clicking with it and could never get to where I wanted to be. Your videos and teachings stopped me from giving up and actually helped me understand the trajectory I needed to go and now I'm kicking ass with my vocals. Thank you for all the amazing content you post!

I love being able to see and listen to these examples of, singing with distortion, through the eyes of a female singer. She makes it feel so approachable. My two daughters and I have been warming up our distortion voice using your "How to Scream, Add Distortion, Yell and Sing Aggressively WITHOUT Hurting Your Voice! (3 Steps)" video. This will be another great one to help take what they are already doing and step it up a notch. They have used your method while singing two different songs at four different performances. Song one: "I'm So Sick' by Flyleaf and song two: Bloodwork by 36Crazyfists. Your method works flawlessly. Thanks Chris.

I feel like I've gotten so much better at screaming this year, and I contribute a lot of that to you and your channel Chris. So, thanks a lot man! Now, if I could only figure out the fry scream I'd be much closer to where I want to be as I am still relying on my inhale technique to achieve the closest sound to fry I know how.

I own your course (which is great, I would very much recommend to everyone) but as a contralto I struggle sooo much with distortion its pretty daunting sometimes. Im following Lauren quite awhile so this was a really nice match up!

thanks Chris for you tips and collaborations
lately I have been able after years of practice to reach that fine healthy distortion in my live performances and that's thanks to your videos too
It's actually much more relaxed and healthy to let the voice break into grit at the transitioning range
instead of pulling chest and get a stiff clean dark tone as I used to do, plus it sounds better
I also love to break the air between the roof of my pallet and my nose at end of the phrases to get the squeaky heady sound as a closing signature
Since I started flirting with the break with no fear
singing has become a whole new game full of discovery and fun
Before I started watching your video I too thought that the idols of punk rock I used to worship as a kid were just complete different creatures from me and there was nothing I could do about it
Turns out it wasn't true and instead my unconscious mental conditioning was the reason my voice was so stiff and limited
and as I am developing my free singing so my psyche is freeing itself from the burdens of trauma
    What an amazing journey
so keep doing what you're doing ure a legend !

You should make a video compiling all the weird often hilarious noises you've used to explore the various dimensions of vocal expression, explaining for each one what particular dimension it helps to discover. Some help with discovering loudness and power, others with learning how to move the larynx to access different timbres and others help tap into grit.
Setting up a small practice routine around this would be the quickest way for one to start learning to _use_ one's voice; how to move themselves within these different dimensions. And it wouldn't even take too much time; just 5 to 10 minutes a day of purposeful focused practice on how each noise feels and how it affects the resulting sound would be a game changer for a whole lot of people. Not only for newly aspiring singers, but it looks to me that there's a lot of singers that have practiced breath support and tonal accuracy that haven't yet taken their time to fully discover all the possibilities of their voice. This could be the practice that triggers that discovery process.

I can successfully sing with distortion in a couple of ways but the "voice crack" method that you use just doesn't click for me at all. I can find my breaking point, fine, but no matter what I've tried I can't take it to the next step where it sounds controlled and usable, it just sounds absolutely awful. Any ideas?
PS: Yes I've watched your original "how to sing with grit / distortion" video, I just can't find the transition point to make it sound fine D:

Sometimes students need to go at vocal distortion in multiple ways at once and this course really helps you do that: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack

Some days I feel like my voice has so many breaks it's practically in retirement 😂
The top of the second octave
the top of the third octave
    The middle of the fourth
    The bottom of the fifth
    And again around f5
