How does the story of Noah's Ark in Genesis compare to the flood narrative in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and what does this suggest about the origins of the biblical account?
I vaguely recall a class in 8th grade about ancient civilizations. Since I wasn’t raised Christian, or under any religion, I was bored stiff with it, but now I find it very interesting.
Never was. It's a compilation of mistranslated and consistently edited texts derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls, where the stories and events depicted in the scrolls were passed down by word of mouth for hundreds of years like a messed up game of "telephone" before someone had the bright idea to start writing them down.
@@jonathanj.3695 As the Psalmist told us; I will open my mouth in a parable, I will utter dark sayings of old. And in the NT, Jesus never taught but in a parable. Our work is to discover the underlying theme the ancients were telling stories about. Which all they had were the stories written in the Stars and planetary alignments. Like when does the flood myth happen every year? Or, When does the Milky Way show up every year? All religions are based on astrology, even the Anunnaki are personifications of the stars and planets... Wikipedia Anunnaki under the mythology tab. Told ya so.😅
I agree with you completely, but on a side note check out RANDALL CARLSON interviews where he shows catastrophic floods did actually happen 1000"s of years ago right after an asteroid hit on earth, causing earth quakes and volcanic eruptions, which then caused a worldwide winter for years, followed by a fast thawing which caused the ice to melt very quickly causing world wide floods.
Keep your fancy book lernin' away from the Bible! Next, you'll be pointing out the multiple contradiction. Those are there because God WANTED them there, for some reason. The lord works in mysterious ways, after all.
The bible for Protestant believers is 66 books while Catholics have 73 books and the oldest bible, the Ethiopian bible, has 84 books.-Already a major problem. There were many different gospels, some say at least 20, But only four were used in the Protestant version. All religious leaders under order from the Roman emperor Constantine In 325 had to hammer out what would be in the bible. Much was left out due to major conflicting stories. Much of the bible stories were copied from ancient civilizations before Christianity was adopted such as Egypt, Greek , Middle Eastern beliefs, etc, Todays KJV bible is full of major contradictions, absurdities and brutality. How can a rational person believe that their bible is the actual word of a supreme creator? There are many thousands of beliefs each with their version of a god. This is the 21st century and most people still believe in 1st century fairy tales. It is mind-boggling.
Another wonderful video of information everyone should have to understand how religions evolve from ancient stories and beliefs .. Thank you for sharing
Interesting thought! Many stories in the Old Testament do have parallels in other ancient cultures, but they’re unique in how they reveal God’s relationship with humanity. It’s definitely worth digging deeper into
Problem is, we have no Abrahamic texts older than 700 BC, yet we can read the original Sumerian myths in cuneiform tablets that are well over a thousand years older. The Hebrews did have a habit of hijacking better, older folklore, especially after they fell under Babylonian influence.
The Abrahamic god isn't real. --------------------------------------------------------- According to the general consensus of scholarship *(even critical Christian scholars),* YHWH was originally incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon as a son of the Canaanite high god El before inheriting the top spot in the pantheon and El's wife Athirat (Asherah) before religious reforms "divorced" them. El's pantheon in Ugarit (modern day Ras Shamra in Syria) is called the *Elohim,* literally the plural of El. Interestingly, the Biblical god is also referred to numerous times as Elohim. If you want to see if El is fictional, just read his mythology in the Ugaritic/Canaanite texts. "The mysterious Ugaritic text Shachar and Shalim tells how (perhaps near the beginning of all things) *El* came to shores of the sea and saw two women who bobbed up and down. *El* was sexually aroused and took the two with him, killed a bird by throwing a staff at it, and roasted it over a fire. He asked the women to tell him when the bird was fully cooked, and to then address him either as husband or as father, for he would thenceforward behave to them as they called him. They saluted him as husband. He then lay with them, and they gave birth to Shachar ("Dawn") and Shalim ("Dusk"). Again *El* lay with his wives and the wives gave birth to "the gracious gods", "cleavers of the sea", "children of the sea". The names of these wives are not explicitly provided, but some confusing rubrics at the beginning of the account mention the goddess *Athirat (Asherah),* who is otherwise *El's* chief wife, and the goddess Raḥmayyu ("the one of the womb"), otherwise unknown." *"First, a god named El predates the arrival of the Israelites into Syria-Palestine.* Biblical usage shows El was not just a generic noun, but often a proper name for Israel’s God (e.g., Gen 33:20: “El, the God of Israel”)." "I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 9 should be translated “inheritance.” *Yahweh receives Israel as his “inheritance” (nachalah), just as the other sons of El received their nations as their inheritance (nachal, v. 8).* With this verb, especially in the Hiphil, the object is always what is being given as an inheritance. Thus, Israel is given to Yahweh as his inheritance. ((Here I’m indebted to Dan McClellan.)) It would make no sense for Elyon to give himself an inheritance. Moreover, as I’ve argued elsewhere, it is not just the Gentile nations that are divided up according to the number of the *sons of El.* It is all of humankind, i.e., “the sons of Adam.” This clearly includes Israel. And the sons of Adam are not divided up according to the number of the *sons of El,* plus one (i.e., plus Elyon). They are divided up, according to the text, *solely* according to the number of the *sons of El.* *Thus, that Yahweh receives Israel as his inheritance makes Yahweh one of the sons of El mentioned in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting.* A Sumerian hymn speaks to the goddess: “Nanshe, your divine powers are not matched by any other divine powers.” *Does this mean that Nanshe was the high goddess, that there were no gods above her? No, it does not.* Nanshe was the daughter of Enki, the high god. *In Sumerian mythology, as with Ugaritic, Israelite, Babylonian, and others, in the ancient past, the high god (Enki, in this case) divided up the world and assigned his children certain domains.* Nanshe was given a limited domain (the modern Persian Gulf) and was tasked with maintaining social justice there. *This is exactly what we see in Deuteronomy 32 with Yahweh. Yahweh is given a limited domain (Israel) and is given authority over his people, to punish them, as well as to protect and defend them against foreign enemies.* That Yahweh, like Nanshe, is said to have incomparable divine power *does not* mean that he is not subordinate to the high god who gave him his domain. *It is also of note that Nanshe, like Baal, Yahweh, and so many other deities, evolved over time. Her domain increased, and she was promoted in the pantheon (although she never became the high goddess)."* *"The Most Heiser: Yahweh and Elyon in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32 - Religion at the Margins"* based on the *majority scholarly consensus.* (Written by Thom Stark who is a Christian) *"Michael Heiser: A Unique Species? - Religion at the Margins"* (A second response to Michael Heiser) *"Excerpt from “Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan” by John Day - Lehi's Library."* *"The Table of Nations: The Geography of the World in Genesis 10"* - TheTorah.com (Excluding the short narrative on Nimrod (vv. 8-12), *which appears to be a later addition,* Genesis 10 contains *70* names of nations or cities, a number that was symbolic of totality. Similarly, the descendants of Jacob were *70* in number (Gen 46:37; Exod 1:5), *as were the sons of the supreme Canaanite god El, with whom YHWH became equated.)* *"Polytheism and Ancient Israel’s Canaanite Heritage. Many Old Testament stories, like the flood or creation, share themes with ancient Near Eastern texts (e.g., Gilgamesh, Enuma Elish). However, the Bible reinterprets these stories to reveal unique theological messages about God's sovereignty, covenant, and moral purpose.
Abraham is Brahman Samson is Utu Shamash Ester is Ishtar moses is Saargon. The 7 days are 7 creation stories. Ptah created with magic words. Ect ect...
Even Judaism need invent monotheism. "No other gods before us" does NOT deny other gods; instead it recognizes and is clamping down on the very common practice of Jews hedging their bets bet by "observing" the gods of 2 or more religions (there is archeological evidence of Jewish households of bireligious homes). Notice that SIN is not at all synonymous with moral codes -- just check the 10 Commandments or the 613 sins. SIN is disrespecting God (or rather what a religion claimed to be God's commands, never to be questioned as illogical, unreasonable, or often cruel). Notice that Christianity quickly rejected or omitted Jewish or even Jesus' preaching.
That’s an insightful take! The evolution of monotheism in Judaism is a fascinating topic, especially when you dive into historical and archaeological contexts. The shift from acknowledging multiple deities to strict monotheism is complex and reveals a lot about cultural and religious dynamics of the time. Your point about sin being tied to obedience rather than moral behavior is also a thought-provoking angle. Thanks for sharing
True. A lot of the 10 commandments are how to appease a jealous god. The Hebrew god never denied there were other gods or that they were evil. That came later. The Hebrews were surrounded by pagan neighbors and were originally polytheistic themselves, but they had a religious schism where some religious fanatics starting pushing a monotheistic god. Notice the Hebrew bible is full of the Jews enduring god's wrath because they kept backsliding into polytheism and getting chummy with their pagan neighbors. My favorite is Jeremiah 44:17-19 where the Hebrews tell Jeremiah, they've gone back to worshipping the Queen of Heaven in which their women take a leading role because when they were worshipping her, they lived in peace and had plenty. But when they switched to monotheism, all bad things started to happen.
Tower of Babel is the point of starting of divide & conquer doctrine. According to Jewishness this is a year 5800 or something like that. So the Jewishness didn't started with Genesis but was there for almost 6000 years. So , according to Kabbalah the first 2 000 years was time of chaos where many were fighting to preserve their own countries or civilizations etc. Then you have story of Babel that start some 4 000 years ago. Languages are confused by "God" and division among people started. As you said later, everything was about to create believers and the only authority is a God and his representatives on Earth also Hebrew priesthood. And so after 2000 years of division we are now in the time of Jesus or as Kabbalah call it the time of messiah. Success of Jesus depend on white people .Jesus was a first divine Semite adopted by White people or forced on Whites. You have to see Hebrews as the chosen rulers, not by the God but by the owners of this planet, and they had to wright the new script how to rule planet using the old stories and materials. That is normal. What is not normal is the fact that humans are today more stupid than ever and they massively believe in the fiction called God with the smart phones in their pockets and are ready to kill each other. Unfortunately that is tragedy that can only be solved with new flood.
Glossing over the use of Christianity to takeover another people by trying to get them to worship you as Gods chosen was kinda wild. Because I agree but you don’t hear that take very often.
Nobody will know for certain what was going on back in ancient times. But what I think is , given the fact that we have more people on this planet than ever and people are greedier and more corrupt than ever before , if there is a single almighty god shouldn’t he/she/it be doing something about it all ? I also find that religious people find it easy to believe in one invisible almighty being in a incomprehensibly massive universe yet they refuse to believe in alien life elsewhere. Takes all sorts I suppose and it’s easier to take the moral high ground than prove your faith is correct.
@@blackhawk7r221 Wouldn't hold my breath. Jesus said he'd return with his kingdom before the men around him were dead. That was nearly 2000 years ago. He didn't return. I doubt he'll be making another curtain call.
Is Genesis a divine revelation or a masterful remix of ancient myths? If the Bible borrows heavily from older stories, does it enhance its universality or challenge its authenticity? Let's discuss!
Well as Jesus pointed out, Satan is the prince of this world. This is his domain to rule over. He has many names and the name you mentioned is one of them.
Saw a video earlier about how the Old Testament was God on the warpath and the New Testament was all peace and love and how it’s so strange that this is the same God. Give it some thought and don’t believe that they are the same religion (not like Christianity to borrow from other much older religions and assimilating it) then this video comes along.
You bring up a really interesting point! The contrast between the Old and New Testaments has always sparked deep discussions. It’s fascinating to think about how the perception of God evolves in scripture and how Christianity weaves together influences from different traditions. This video definitely adds another layer to consider
There was an oral tradtion and probably written records that did not survive the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. They have similarities to Babylonian and others because it is true. The creation, the flood, the scattering, etc.
*The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis.* Prior to the 19th century CE, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. Nevertheless, the historical reconstruction that El was the chief god of the Israelites is not indebted only to the testimony of the (rather late) biblical witness of P. *Numerous biblical texts attest to the fact that the titles, functions, and the imagery associated with the Canaanite god El, as revealed by the Ugaritic texts and the Canaanite myth of Elkunirša, were assimilated into the profile of the deity YHWH.* According to the Ugaritic texts, El was known for his *wisdom* (e.g., KTU2 1.4.V.65[6]) and *great age* (’ab šnm, *“Father of Years,”* and drd, *“Ageless One,”* in KTU2 1.4.IV.24 and 1.10.III.6, respectively),[7] his *compassionate nature* (lţpn il dp’id, *“Kind El, the Compassionate One,”* e.g., KTU2 1.16.IV.9), his role as *father of the gods and humanity* (’ab ’adm, *“father of humanity,”* KTU2 1.14..III.47, and bny bnwt, *“creator of creatures,”* KTU2 1.17.I.24) and *creator of the cosmos.* [8] El was the *divine King* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) and the *head of the pantheon or divine council* (referred to variously as the dr ’il, *“circle of El/Family of El,”* KTU2 1.15.III.19; mpħrt bn ’il, *“the assembly of the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.65.3; bn ’il, *“the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.40.33, 41; pħr kbbm, *“assembly of the stars,”* KTU2 1.10.I.3-4; ‘dt ’ilm, *“assembly of the gods,”* KTU2 1.15.II.7; cf. The Bible is firstly and foremost, a history of the Jews, the Israelits. This only begins when God forms a covenant with Abraham, and the main role of the Israelits was to provide the material for the narrative that reveals the nature and the workings of God. The first part of Genesis is mainly there to set the scene and give a broad brush outline of the background. Without going into any great detail it acknowledges all the stories of Sumarian and other ancient people are based on real events rather than being simply myths and legends.
Finally. A comment by a person who actually bothered to read the book instead of a bunch of "Jesus is truth" spam and people copy pasting Bible verses with no context from a Google search.
You nailed it! The Bible does serve as both a spiritual guide and a historical account of the Israelites’ covenant with God. It’s fascinating how Genesis sets the stage, tying in broader ancient narratives while focusing on God’s purpose through His chosen people. Definitely makes you think about how interconnected those ancient stories really are
What makes this video weak is it is full of old claims we have heard before but no substance of prove to back up the claims. Give dates of when each country wrote their stories. Show evidence of theologians confirming these findings. Many theologians have disagreed that the stories in the scriptures have been copied. Watching this video is a time waster the way it was produced.
Do you mean like the claims the bible was god inspired with no actual evidence of this, or that mathew wrote the book of mathew yet it wasn't written during the lide of mathew same with Luke, mark and James written after these people died but claimed to be written by them same with the old testament supposedly written by Noah but no evidence exists that's the case actually evidence proves it was written hundreds of years after the time Noah supposedly exists. The epic of gilgamesh is a flood story written much earlier that the flood story in the Bible, many stories or very similar stories found in the Bible can be found written in cuneiform before Jewish stories.
@jonathanj.3695 Visit the University of Oxford UCLA websites and READ actual Cueniform tablets, then apply cognitive thinking. The hebrew bible plagiarized their stories flat out. You might as well worship Santa Claus too.
Quoting from a book that was constantly edited by corrupt churches and consistently mistranslated from a bunch of ancient scrolls that were written by people who were trying to jot down stories that were passed down by word of mouth like a game of "telephone", doesn't make you sound like a true person of faith. It makes you sound like a blind believer who was brainwashed by a corrupted church. Additionally, having the user name of "MoneyIsNewGod" doesn't make you any more convincing.

Mythology based on mythology. That's how concerned every religion is with reality.
How does the story of Noah's Ark in Genesis compare to the flood narrative in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and what does this suggest about the origins of the biblical account?
I vaguely recall a class in 8th grade about ancient civilizations. Since I wasn’t raised Christian, or under any religion, I was bored stiff with it, but now I find it very interesting.
the bible is not an original document...
Never was.
It's a compilation of mistranslated and consistently edited texts derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls, where the stories and events depicted in the scrolls were passed down by word of mouth for hundreds of years like a messed up game of "telephone" before someone had the bright idea to start writing them down.
@@jonathanj.3695 As the Psalmist told us;
I will open my mouth in a parable, I will utter dark sayings of old.

Our work is to discover the underlying theme the ancients were telling stories about.
Which all they had were the stories written in the Stars and planetary alignments. Like when does the flood myth happen every year? Or, When does the Milky Way show up every year?

And think about all the damage that has been done throughout the ages all the suffering and all the chaos because of it.

According to the general consensus of scholarship *(even critical Christian scholars),* YHWH was originally incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon as a son of the Canaanite high god El before inheriting the top spot in the pantheon and El's wife Athirat (Asherah) before religious reforms "divorced" them.
The names of these wives are not explicitly provided, but some confusing rubrics at the beginning of the account mention the goddess *Athirat (Asherah),* who is otherwise *El's* chief wife, and the goddess Raḥmayyu ("the one of the womb"), otherwise unknown."
*"First, a god named El predates the arrival of the Israelites into Syria-Palestine.* Biblical usage shows El was not just a generic noun, but often a proper name for Israel’s God (e.g., Gen 33:20: “El, the God of Israel”)."
"I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting.*
A Sumerian hymn speaks to the goddess: “Nanshe, your divine powers are not matched by any other divine powers.” *Does this mean that Nanshe was the high goddess, that there were no gods above her? Her domain increased, and she was promoted in the pantheon (although she never became the high goddess)."*

As the Hebrew Bible notes, the Hebrew language itself is a Canaanite language, literally the “lip of Canaan” (שְׂפַת כְּנַעַן; Is. **19:18**), and so it cannot often be distinguished by modern scholars from other Canaanite inscriptions on purely linguistic grounds.)*

Many Old Testament stories, like the flood or creation, share themes with ancient Near Eastern texts (e.g., Gilgamesh, Enuma Elish). However, the Bible reinterprets these stories to reveal unique theological messages about God's sovereignty, covenant, and moral purpose.
So the story is more nuanced and complex and that makes it true?

The Hebrews said no other god before our God. It's the Romans that did the one God nonsense
We are talking MANY centuries before there was a Rome.
*if there is a single almighty god shouldn’t he/she/it be doing something about it all* Theists say he's coming...soon...
Hope so. We’ve been waiting thousands of years for god to do something…..anything.
So where are the old gods now? Yahweh is still around. As they say " history is written by the winner ". His victory seem to be eternal....
In the mid-19th century CE, however, European museums, as well as academic and religious institutions, sponsored excavations in Mesopotamia to find physical evidence for historical corroboration of the stories in the Bible. ***These excavations found quite the opposite, however, in that, once cuneiform was translated, it was understood that a number of biblical narratives were Mesopotamian in origin.***
*Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer,* translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians ***before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible.***
***In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos.*** Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - *just as God does in the Genesis tale* - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service.

8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting.*
A Sumerian hymn speaks to the goddess: “Nanshe, your divine powers are not matched by any other divine powers.” *Does this mean that Nanshe was the high goddess, that there were no gods above her? Her domain increased, and she was promoted in the pantheon (although she never became the high goddess)."*

Similarly, the descendants of Jacob were *70* in number (Gen 46:37; Exod 1:5), *as were the sons of the supreme Canaanite god El, with whom YHWH became equated.)*

(Of course, much of this [i.e., that Israel worshiped El and Asherah alongside YHWH] is really to be expected given that recent syntheses of the *archaeological, cultural, and literary data* pertaining to the emergence of the nation of Israel in the Levant *show that most of the people who would eventually compose this group were originally Canaanite.

KTU2 1.2.I; 1.3V; 1.4 IV-V) which met at the sacred mountain. *His consort was the goddess Athirat who bore him seventy sons* (šb‘m bn ’atrt, *“the seventy sons of Athirat,”* KTU2 1.4.VI.46). El was also known for his *divine patronage and blessing of progeny to humans* (as in the Epic of Kirta; see, for example, KTU2 1.14.III.46-51), for his *appearances to humans in dreams* (e.g., KTU2 1.14.I.35-37), as *being a healer* (KTU2 1.16.V-VI), and for his *dwelling at the sacred mountain* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) at the *sources of the mythical rivers* (KTU2 1.2.III.4; 1.3.V.6; 1.4.IV.20-22; 1.17.V.47-48) in a *tent* (KTU2 1.2.III.5; 1.3.V.8; 1.4.IV.24; 1.17.V.49; c.f. the Canaanite myth Elkunirša which *describes El’s abode as a tent[9]).[10]*
*To underscore the fact that terminology and imagery originally used for the god El was adopted by the Israelites in their descriptions of YHWH,* the following brief summary might be placed in comparison to the discussion of El above: YHWH is an *aged, patriarchal deity* (Ps. 102:28; Job 36:26; Is. 40:28; Dan. 7.9-14, 22), *a father* (Deut. 32:6; Is. 63:16; 64:7; Jer. 3:4, 19; 31:9, etc.), *merciful and gracious* (Ex. 34:6; Jon. 4:2; Joel 2:13; Ps. 8615; 103:8; 145:8, etc.), *a divine patron who bestows the blessing of progeny upon Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,* often manifesting himself in *dreams or visions, a healer* (Gen. 20:17; Num. 12:13; 2 Kgs. 20:5, 8; Ps. 107:20, etc.), who *dwells in a tent* (Ps. 15:1; 27:6; 91:10; 132:3) *amidst the heavenly waters* (Ps. 47:5; 87; Is. 33: 20-22; Ez. 47:1-12, etc.), the *creator of the cosmos,* who is enthroned as *heavenly King* in the *divine council* (1 Kgs. 22:19; Is. 6:1-8; cf. Ps. 29:1-2; 82; 89: 5-8, etc.) on the *sacred mount of assembly* (e.g., Is. 14:13). Additionally, in much Israelite religious practice throughout the monarchic period, *YHWH had a divine consort, the goddess Asherah, the Hebrew equivalent of Ugaritic Athirat.[11]* (Originally the wife of El)

Well it’s good because I want to learn the theology that church is teaching through the canon of scripture.
How convenient their book they made dubs themselves God’s chosen… cause God said so… lmao. Never make fun of Mormons with Joseph smith😂
You nailed it! The Bible does serve as both a spiritual guide and a historical account of the Israelites’ covenant with God. It’s fascinating how Genesis sets the stage, tying in broader ancient narratives while focusing on God’s purpose through His chosen people. Definitely makes you think about how interconnected those ancient stories really are
Same story by diffrnt sources from diffrnt era. Nothing to do with originality. We can be sure there are embellishments in these stories...
The stories come from all over the place, I think greek mythology is a lot better than the bible
It has been altered. There is a name for it. These were Jewish scribes
Nothing to shake, I already have no faith.. It is not Logical
