It starts with initiative of the self, community is describing a whole in society. Stoicism is about practically inputting lessons into life but nothing changes if nothing ever gets started so start with you and lead by example. Part of being a stoic is realizing you can't control others but you can hold up a sign and say I'm doing what is righteous would you like to make this society a better place too?

My line is, ***The obstacle is where real life happens*** Being truley humble is key for me. I must admit to my innermost being that I have to accept the situation as it is. Then I have to apply my best thinking to this situation whatever it is. A lot of times it's requiring that I made a mistake this time around, admit this to myself. I AM responsible no matter what. Whether my mistake or the pandemic that happens. How can I fix it? How can I make this better? I'm not talking about material wealth or that type of success. But inner happiness and fulfillment. First, do no harm. I start there in my interactions. Most of the time, I manage to come out the other side feeling a great sense of accomplishment, I feel a sense that I did good and during that journey I've touched other people's lives and hopefully added something good to their lives and to the greater good of the world, too, I hope. In my own little way, in my little piece of the planet. And that's really what's most important to me.

I was expecting more from this.
If I may offer some constructive criticism:
    1) Don't start responses with "no". I think this happened a handful of times and was off-putting, so I imagine it's worse for the guest. When you do that, you are communicating to the other person: "Everything you just said was invalid". It's similar to "Yes, but", except worse. I could tell you were in agreement and just wanted to clarify your point so you can say something like: "Totally, I agree, and I didn't mean X necessarily, I meant Y" if you felt they misunderstood your point.
    2) Get into the depths of what the guest is about without needing to interject your own thoughts or wisdom. We can read your books and listen to your podcasts without guests or podcasts where you are the guest to get your perspective. When you are hosting a guest, it is all about them and the listener wants to figure out interesting information about how they tick, but when you fill in spaces with your own stories and whatnot, it detracts from that.

Although the stories of Lewis Puller and Jim Sursely appear to be parallel examples of two people with catastrophic injuries who differ in their approaches to addressing the same issues, that is only superficially accurate.
To compare one life to another on a narrow set of criteria and judge them based on the tangible "success" of each is a flawed method of interpreting what success is in something as complex as life.
For that method to give a useful insight it would require an accounting of a near infinite number of variables in the entirety of each person's experience. Not only is that information unknowable to an observer but also to the individuals themselves.

@@kisahnalahnpoveda9068 I agree with you on this, Allen. Besides that, my point was more in the direction of let's not use stoicism only as a give 110%, win-it-all thing, but as a way to lead a good life. Sometimes it is not only about winning. I know, a lot of people are inspired by Marcus Aurelius and the whole being-an-emperor stuff. But most of us won't be or do not even want to be liderus maximus. Let us remember that Epictetus was a slave for a good part of his life and then lived a modest (in a good way, modesty is a virtue, no matter what the society around tells you!) life. At the same time, we shall consider that stoicism was and still can be a philosophic tool against autocracy and tyranny, which can take many forms, not only within political systems but also in our daily lives. Guess what... they were great men, but they were just men. Jocko's been through SEAL training and led men in that arena. That puts him in VERY rare air. Socrates and Aurelius would call him a brother.

@@gcxred4kat9 they were just man??? Read about Socrates life as a warrior (you would be amazed) ,
And now about Marcus he was in the front all his life (king of the world btw)
So Jocko is a great model and we can learn a lot from him, but some perspective is needed here ;)

Ryan asks. How do you stay tight when you don't have too? I was really surprised Ryan asked this question. Man always has too stay tight as you put it. It gives him meaning and purpose and without meaning and purpose you head in a downward spiral. No matter how rich you are. Also, when you say he "doesn't have too" infers he has climbed to the top and no where else to go. You have to ask yourself. "Compared to what?"

Well done Ryan! You might find this of interest on the resilience front (my PhD work was on related topic of functional mental toughness) -ua-cam.com/video/UrsZ00hw_6M/v-deo.html By the way, just finished your latest book. You crushed it again!!

I've listened to it multiple time, and at 2:50 does Ryan says "it's hard to do worse than Jacko's stuff"? From the context I am sure Ryan intends this as a compliment, but that is not actually how I hear it. Maybe a text edit could be applied to correct to what was actually intended...if indeed it is wrong.

You're correct, he clearly misspoke there. It happens to the best of us.
He also misuses the word "penultimate" at 0:35 as he describes Admiral James Stockdale. It means "the next to last" (and not "the utmost" as he seems to imply.)
It's still a great video! So thankful for both these guys and it's awesome seeing them together.
