This is the first and LAST kit I will ever build that uses a CD instead of paper plans and instructions. It was the most frustrating build I have done. Using pictures worked fine until rigging. Impossible to see connection points, no measurements. Hope you have a better experience if you do a Litina build.
All good thanks
How many inches long is it?
Sorry it took so long to reply. My email has been down. She is 29".
I have to agree with Greg, you are doing an amazing job with a build that is complicated and scary at the same time. But the end results will be gorgeous when compared to your other builds.
Thank you most kindly. I'm working on the San Felipe now. It will take a while.
Now that is some amazing planking!
Thanks , Just don't look too close.
Clever! Beautiful.
Thank you much.
Gordan, thank you for walking us through your comments and concerns in regards to this kit. I will certainly thinking twice before building that model. PS, you have a new sub!
Thanks again. This link should get you to my page to see all my posted builds if you choose. ua-cam.com/channels/6f6YVQqe6Z6yoUK1DEExwg.html
Gordon thanks for sharing any information now that's great
My pleasure. Thanks for taking a look
Teak deck look GREAT, looks like the crew just finished holystoning and flogging😊👍
Thanks A little bleeding into the wood on the ends, oh well.
That is simply beautiful work, Gordon. If you hadn't mentioned the problem with the deadeyes being too far forward I wouldn't have realised due to a lack of experience. This is why I watch experienced modellers so I can learn these type of things. I would love to see more videos showing the methods you use.
Thanks for the kind words Greg. These ship kits are not cheep, but this one kept me busy for seven months. I hope you enjoy this hobby as much as I do.
I will finish the OcCre story, as I wasn't able to get it in the video. I informed OcCre of the screw-up on the mast tops. I offered to send pictures of the problem. Waited for three weeks for a response, none came. I tried three more times to talk with them , not a word back. I also asked about their lifetime warranty, still nothing from them. So, don't count on this company for much help. It also seems that they don't care if their kits are flawed. Very sad. I wouldn't buy this kit.
Well, the things you have to do for yourself are normally the better looking and historically and scale-wise more correct. I normally throw away most of the things supplied anyway, so I guess that kit would be interesting for me, after all. The fun lies in scratch-building. Much more satisfying in the end. Of course, its consuming more time, but hey, we're not in a race, are we? It looks great so far, by the way.
Hi Andreas. This would be a good one for you if it wasn't for the price. Way over priced.
Beau travail. Dommage que vous n'ayez pas patiné les peintures, es cuivre etc... comme sur le modèle d'exposition de Model shipways.
Masterclass .
Hi Adam . Sorry but I don't. Are you doing the same kit that I did? You might find another build of this kit on you tube. This kit was pretty poor on the instructions. If you are building this kit, I might be able to help. If you tell me what part you are stuck on, I can look at my plans and give an opinion. If you want, we could go to email and not this You Tube page. Let me know.
Hi Gordon, I was wandering if you have any more photos or videos from this build. I've just started this one and it is beginning to be a nightmare (different things in instruction, different in schemes). I'm currently puzzled by beams that are supposed to bend upwards. More photos or vids would help as the schemes are not showing everything.
which kit is this? where would I buy one?
This is from Mamoli as the vid shows. You could order it from them on line, or other model companies might have them in stock. You could try a search and see what turns up good luck.
файна робота !
Hi Gordon! First off, exceptional work! I’m a beginner to ship modeling and just finished my first ship (Mini Mamoli USS Constitution, scale 1:330). It came out fairly decent for my first build. I’m about to purchase another project at a larger scale (1:65), and of course, this will not have a premade hull like my first model. I’m a bit intimidated about assembling the hull myself with all the planks and painting required…Any tips?
Hi Jason and welcome to the world of ship modeling. I understand your concerns about planking. It is the hardest part of a build. You might want to start with a boat that has double planking. That way you get good practice on the first layer which has the thick planks. you don't need to be too neat as you can fill gaps and low spots, then fill low places with wood filler and sand smooth to prep for the second and thinner layer. As you know, UA-cam is a treasure trove of how to vids on ship modeling. Watch as many as you can. Only practice makes perfect. I do recommend OcCre for your models as they are the best. I do have six other models on you tube. Check them out, and let me know if I can be of any other help. Good luck, and have a fun build.
Nice video... but spoiled, like so many videos, by awful background music. 😕
Don't listen to it. Seems like a no brainer to me
Cook is my favorite explorer. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for visiting and the comment.
Are there any fun beginner level ships you would recommend?
Good morning and thanks for the question. First off the company that makes the kits have a lot to do with their constriction. My recommendation is OcCre. They are the best as far as I'm concerned. They are a Spanish co. I would recommend that you go to their site and have a look at their ships. They have a customer service that can't be beat, a lifetime warranty on everything. Their instructions and drawings are top notch. To your question, All ship models will be a challenge. The hardest part being the planking. You Tube is a treasure trove of information and how too vids. I would hope that you have some experience building models. Finely My orders from OcCre got to me here in MO in a week. That is crazy fast. You can ask the OcCre people for a recommendation on a starter kit. Good luck
@@gordonback thanks for the recommendation. already im enjoying their website with great beginner models. UA-cam and the internet in general is a great place when you run into people like you. All the best.
@@mapograph The OcCre Albatross is a fantastic starter kit. It is many a new builders favorite go-to.
Hi John I also thought it was a great movie. Russell Crowe is most believable in every role he has done. I do have six other ships on you tube. You can see them here- ua-cam.com/channels/6f6YVQqe6Z6yoUK1DEExwg.html Thanks for the comment.
I just loved that movie. I’ve always liked everything Russel Crowe has ever done. , BuIm Really surprised he hasn’t done some really serious action movies like Denzel Washington or Jason Stratham and especially Liam Neeson . Never the less ,it’s a definite masterpiece!, and do another.
Beautiful detail. Truly inspirational:) Beautiful model. I did a version of the Endeavour using bits and pieces of garden refuse I left laying about for gardening projects. I love making models. They're a lot of fun, aren't they:) The HM Endeavour Ensign System and the use of Umbrellas for Shade Joke The crew of the HM Endeavour ate on deck using tables that had umbrellas for shade in the Sun. The Wheel House and cabin hatch were shaded. The Popham Ensign System of the belly button hernia of the 18th Century signaled using the Cross of St George with a Union Jack Canton. Beneath the Royal Navy St George Cross flag there was the traditional East India Company flag recognised by employees at outposts dedicated to vessels trading in goods and returning to Europe for purposes of commerce involving the Spice Route. Hi TC this ship is now the Surprise. She started her life as a Rose replica built in 1970. Since then she has changed hands several times as the Rose. The present owners have named her Surprise.
Hi Rodney Yes you are correct. Even as the Rose, she was not the original but a replica. When ships are built and sold, they most often will be renamed by the new owners. With retro fits above and below the water line, she has become a shadow of her former 1970's original self. Thanks for your comment.
The ship in San Diego which was used in the movie Master and Commander was previously the ship Rose, and was in no way a descendant of HMS Surprise.
The REAL ship on which the story was built was NOT SURPRISE it was HMS PHOEBE. (a very similar frigate). The real target of the voyage was NOT FRENCH, it was AMERICAN USS ESSEX. (I know because my forebear Allen Gardiner, served as a midshipman in the Phoebe - then a renowened 'attack ship', with a very keen crew!)

your actually building the hms rose.
You have done a really nice job of it so far. Will look forward to seeing the Santisima, , that's a really nice ship.
Thanks Greg. Are you working on one now?
what song name
Good afternoon. I'm sorry I don't remember the song name, but the artist is Bob Culbertson , playing the Chapman Stick. You can google him and find the name.
Just started building the 1984 version not the laser cut version, could be fun.already built H.M.S unicorn....Black Pearl...and the big one .Montanes spanish ship, all can be seen on youtube.
Hi Stephen. Where did you get that kit. Hard to imagine that it would still be around. I have built Montanes also, along with many others. I have six builds on UA-cam. Check them out. And please do a vid, or a slide show of your build. I would love to see it.
@gordonback the Morgan I have came from Ebay couple of months ago.I also got my hands on 1/120 scale css Alabama wooden kit
Gordon, I think your supervisor needs a bigger bed. Beautiful work that you do. Such an inspiration for me and my builds. Thank you. Let’s get on with replacing his bed now.
Thank you much. And he does have a bigger day bed. If he gets too comfy, he won't keep an eye on me. Ill be sure to get another shot of him in his Lab sized work spot when I post the Constitution build. It will be a while before that.
Отлично получилось.
I made a Latina almost just like this and I found bending the planks around the hull and making it look semi professional was hard. These ships take me almost 2 months
She looks amazing. The workmanship is wonderful. Think I'll go throw my current ship in the bin lol ;)
Thanks Greg. Thought I wrote a reply but it's not here. I didn't have a very good time with this build, because of the instructions and drawings. Just wanted to get her done.
Hello all. I wanted to give a quick review of this kit. First of all, the plans were the worst I have ever seen. For many reasons. The drawings were not too bad, other than showing things that were different from what was in the kit. Everything was so confusing, for example, every block (pulley) had their own number. this means that if you wanted to know if it was a large single, you had to find the number, probably on another sheet. it would give you a size in mils, 1x3 and that's it. You had to look at the rigging plans to see how many lines ran through it. If anyone has built a kit from Mamoli, could you leave your thoughts and opinions in the coments below. Thanks much.
Beautiful work of nautical art…
Thanks Peter. I am just finishing up the HMS Surprise, and should be posting the vid in about three weeks or so. If you haven't seen the other ships, check them out. Charles W Morgan, Montanes, Pilar, Hermoine and Endeavour.
Собирать 6 месяцев!У меня настолько терпения не хватит..С уважением.😊
Hello - your work is awesome. I am currently working on this build and have a question if you wouldn’t mind. I just completed the lower ratlines for the three masts and couldn’t understand the drawings on the 2nd layer of ratlines. The plans show them, but don’t show what to attach them to. Looks like you have pieces of wood to attach the lines to? I’m a novice - this is the 2nd build. Did I miss something? Or did you add those from your past knowledge? Looks really good. Linda
Hi Linda. I would be happy to help. Many of the real ships had these, and they would serve a double purpose. First, they would hold the shrouds apart at the top, and secondly It was a place to attach the futtock shrouds. ( The short ropes that you are talking about). If you need more information, you can try Googling Futtock Shrouds. Hope this helps. If you need anything else, check back with me. Good luck.
Se Ñ ora...con Ñ de España
Not sure what you are telling me. If it's about my spelling, I don't read right or understand much spanish. Much less how to get the correct lines over the N
@@gordonback Nada nuevo bajo el sol británico...🙄
I know it’s a time and money intensive Hobby. What’s the best way to get into it? What kind of kit should I buy and try out for a beginner?
Hi and welcome. Yes you are correct about both. First, where do your interests lie? there are all kinds of sail boats, ships ect. There are many model making companies. I would suggest OcCre. Find them on line and browse their kits. Start small and for beginers. Also watch as many UA-cam videos as you can. You can probably find a vid of the boat you select and follow along. OcCre has a great customer service department plus guarantees. Hope this helps. I am here if you need more.
My respect for patience and skils❤
Ridicule que ce navire porte les couleurs de la république C’était évidemment un navire de la Royale
Congratulations for your work ,I like this , it·s very clean ....A+
Thank you kindly. I have four others if you wish to have a look. Charles W Morgan, The Royal Caroline, Endeavour and the Harmoine.
Superb build of a graceful ship. Please excuse these two petty nitpickings: Those flags are crying to be waved, and the floor planking looks too new to me, almost like the pavement of a luxurious reception/dancing hall.
Correct on both issues. I got lazy. Thanks for the comment.
well done !
Absolutely stunning finished product. Outside of the copper plating on the hull and the paint, what additional parts/materials did you add to the build?
Thank you kindly. I think that's all, except there were a few parts that didn't fit where they were supposed to. The kit did come with sails, but like most of the boats that I build, I chose not to add them. I also will build a better base for Pilar as the one supplied is very light, flimsy and doesn't look good. If you haven't seen them yet, I have four other builds on the tube. Check them out. Thanks for the interest.
That would be great to do where I live. I can’t get to town for months in during winter and other than household stuff I’m hunting.
