It may not have been my #1 go to Saturn game but I still had lots of fun with this one.
Indeed, it is a fun one.
I had this on my Sega Saturn and had a blast with it. I feel that it was unfairly maligned by critics back in the day, and is much better than it's reputation makes it out to be.
Sorry but this is an underrated gem IMO. I've been playing it at least a few times a month since its release. Have fun with my friends with this one.
Underrated game if you ask me, really solid fighter and I played it a ton way back when. For me, this is exactly what many developers should do with their bigger IPs, not to be afraid to experiment with using them in other genres. Great video again bud.
It is certainly an underrated game. History would be more kind to it had it been released in '95. I'm almost certain of it.
Project COE I agree, you taught me something as I didn't know that the game was delayed.
yeah on its own merits the game animation looks great and nice zoom-in and out effect like in Samurai Shodown.
Kind of surprised more wasn't said about Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, the arcade sequel that apparently wasn't ported to any home console. That was the game I wanted on the Saturn... getting this pretty but otherwise unremarkable Samurai Shodown clone instead was something of a bitter pill. Just another example of Sega not having its hand on the pulse of the gaming public in the mid 1990s.
Well said, and yes SEGA really dropped the ball during this time period. It's a real shame too because so much more could have been done with the Saturn.
Happy Saturnday everyone! I suppose there are two ways to look at this game. I'm going to go with "it looks intriguing" over "it looks uninspired." My wife is not a skilled player but she enjoys playing games a couple nights per week with me. This looks like something she can button mash to maybe get a couple cheap wins in against me. As always, you are the man. Keep up the great work in easily providing the best Saturn content on UA-cam.

Sometimes I want to slap Sega. Golden Axe had such great potential as a series but they just squandered it. The first game was huge... but then:
Why has The Revenge of Death Adder never seen a home release? Why didn't they develop their Ax Battler and Axe Warrior ideas beyond one game each on their weakest performing hardware? Why was Golden Axe III so lazily made? Why was The Duel so run-of-the-mill when they were capable of producing the Virtua Fighter games? Why was Beast Rider shite?

I like this game, it has great characters, nice backgrounds and is very well animated.
The only thing i dislike was the soundtrack of 2-3 stages.
I loved this game. When I heard the intro soundtrack, I remembered old times when I spent day and night playing it. It was 97, 98, I was a teenager. Great graphics.
I always wondered by the didn't bring The Revenge of Death Adder to North America.
Man, I only just learned about this game. And getting into 2D fighting games heaps this is perfect. I can't believe they said it ruined the franchise or whatever negative crap it might have done. Its a gd fight game. Sadly though it even struggles on my cfw PS3 on the MAME app I use which is weird it must be a power heavy game. I might try buy it for my Saturn but I've never seen it so I'm guessing its an expensive title. Great review man!!!!!
If I had a Saturn, I'm pretty sure this would ve one of the games I bought for it. I played this on GameTap and had a blast despite performance issues due to underpowered hardware. I tried to get the arcade version to run emulators but so far have had no luck.
IDK about that complaint of only 10 characters and 0 unlockables. Comparing to MK1 which had 7 characters and SF2 having 8, 10's pretty generous. Also, IDK if releasing it into 94 would've mattered as so many people were already getting hyped about 3D gaming with FPSs like Doom and arcades like Virtua Fighter and Tekken.
That said, it's shame. This game looks Hella fun, just ordered a copy on eBay, I loved Beast Rider as well but heard a lot of complaints on it. Would love to see Sega come back to Golden Axe, Afterburner, new Outrun, even a re-release of that PS2 Altered Beast (we in the Americas never got a release) would be badass.

My grandma has a Saturn The Duel so I suppose I’m lucky as it’s a very fun game I’ve played and it stays in my Top 20 favorite games
Dont forget the full sequel arcade version of Golden Axe 2. It ran on Sega's Titan arcade cab hardware.

Sega had the opportunity to port golden axe the revenge of death adder.Instead they went with the duel for the saturn,waste if you ask me.
If they wanted to release this game here, it should have been a launch title. For when it was released, it was just too little, too late.

They should have ported Golden Axe: Return of Death Adder from the arcade to Saturn. Not porting that game when Golden Axe still was popular was madness.
Sega sitting on this for two years was a big mistake! From what i'm seeing this game looks good and probably plays fine and as a Saturn launch title this game could have been given some slack but not for a game released in 1996! Sega should have released on Saturn Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder that game even though I haven't played it looks awesome! I don't have Golden Axe: The Duel but I will keep an eye out for it! Maybe I should do a podcast with you where we discuss what games Sega should have released on Saturn though i'm afraid that could turn into a series of video's!

I've never known much about this. While it does look a bit generic, it still has some pretty decent graphics and kind of looks fun to me.
It is fun, it's just not as fun as say Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder.
This game is badass
The game looks beautiful. Very nice. Was trying it out. It’s responsive. Fun to play. But, since it was released was released at the same time as X-Men Children of the Atom I see what he mean. But this is its own thing.
This was not the last Golden Axe game in decades. They made a second arcade game or a follow up to the first game. It was called Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder and it was a true return to form for the series. It was made on the exact same hardware as Golden Axe The Duel. What Sega should have done was made this a double CD game with both games included for the Saturn. Unfortunately Sega of Japan declared war on Sega of America and drove their console business into the ground.
Activating meter = all attacks do more damage. You have the option of performing your super attack. If performed it will not deplete your meter either.

Yup, it's a shame Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder wasn't released on home consoles. SEGA really were "special".
Why we got this instead of Golden Axe - Revenge of Death Adder is beyond me.

It's the same thing with just about any recognizable Saturn game in North America. Prices are absolutely insane these days.

This game was kind of disappointing for a Golden Axe game, but it was a decent Samurai Shodown clone for its time. Unfortunately, "decent" doesn't cut it on a console renowned for 2D fighters. Thankfully the Saturn had Guardian Heroes and the more sparsely distributed Dungeons & Dragons Collection, but I for one would have loved to see a true Golden Axe beat'em up (as well as a Streets of Rage sequel) on the Saturn.

I think this a solid fight game, look the same o better game play of the SFII combinate whit Samurai shodown, that is something!!!
I think the sin of this game is come out to late, is this game come out before Darkstalker or after Samurai shodown 2 is this will be a classic game in history.
Man... imagine if SEGA let Platinum work on this series with a nice budget inspired by the RPG mechanics of Nier Automata and the fast combat they are know for...
And for fighting game, the right developer would the guys behind Guilty Gear xrd (Arc)

This game is fine, but I much rather have had a beat em up instead. Revenge of Death Adder or something original.
It's such a shame we never got it on home consoles.

Dark Legend for the Saturn was a better fighting game than this.
