    Great video! As a 25 year old portuguese, I fondly remember the agressive marketing Sega did back in the day with the Saturn here. Not only due to the ads on TV and magazines betting heavily on the trademark "the perfect arcade experience" , also because of the great "Templo dos Jogos"! Things they said like "Sega Rally is so real that it will smell like burnt rubber!" or in the DBZ case, "It's like seeing an episode on the TV" still echo in my head after all this time. I wish I had a Saturn back in the day.

    É verdade que em Portugal, a Saturn esteve bem presente. Lembro-me que aqui em França só se falava da PlayStation e quando ia de férias, notava que em Portugal a máquina da SEGA era rainha. Belos tempos. :)

    well Saturn succeeding in POrtugal isnt surprising since Portugal was Segaland before Sony took over. Master System and Mega Drive also won their generations in Portugal, so there was a lot of good will for the Saturn. However the Saturn didnt have the same impact as the previous 2 Sega consoles in Portugal either, it kinda trailed off with the PS1 once that took off, mostly cause Sega cut off Saturn's legs and stopped supporting it in favor of the Dreamcast launch.
    But yeah, the Mega Drive success in Portugal really left Nintendo in the dust, wasnt even a competition

    But did the Saturn outsell the CD-I in Portugal? I think not! It's interesting to see that the Saturn was successful in a market where the 32X and Sega CD weren't really a factor. Most people blame both of those add ons as sort of a catalyst for the beginning of consumers in the west losing confidence in Sega. Great video man. I'm sure Ian will hate it lol.

    I'm a 32 year old Portuguese national and I can confirm that all of this is 110% true. One little detail I'll add - the DBZ game came out when the series had only aired up to Cell / Dabura's bit, so we all got kinda spoilt about Buu. Haha.

    Fantastic video.
    I am Portuguese and I confirm ... it is absolutely true!
    I was a kid at that time and I remember that everyone wanted a saturn ... because of Dragon Ball.
    Almost all of my friends had Saturn and among other games a title that everyone had was precisely Dragon Ball.
    It should be added that advertising was also very well done. All Dragon Ball VHS tapes in Portugal brought publicity to this game and the previous one from Mega Drive.
    Playstation started to dominate the market in Portugal only at the end of the 90s.

    • @st1ka
      @st1ka  4 роки тому +1

      Yep exactly. I'm fairly certain the Playstation's domination began at around 1998, but I can't tell for certain. Sadly, there's no real concrete data :(

    WTF? You would think they would have sold the Spanish version instead of the French in Portugal! Most people know how closely related Portuguese and Spanish are! Hell I am Texan Gringo with a little Spanish knowledge and I used that as a basis for me to learn a little Portuguese. Even asked my Portuguese and Brazilian friends to teach me stuff as it was super simple to learn. But that is so strange why they didn't sell the Spanish version there at least? Portuguese speakers can easily understand something like 80% of Spanish if I am not mistaken?

      Some of the words are even literally the same, like agua. I do find it a bit odd that somehow the latin word aqua turned into agua in both of these derivative langues though. I mean, in Italian it's acqua which pronounced the same as aqua but with a c as pointless and redundant as the British u in color.

      It's because France got the DBZ games first than the other European countries, including the ones on the SNES and PS1. The same thing happened with the TV show.

    Nice story St1ka, I didn't know about the Saturn doing so well in Portugal, and that DBZ came out only in France, Spain and Portugal apart from Japan. So it looks like the game was localised in France then distributed in the 3 countries without more translations. Dragon Ball (and anime in general) was a big thing there too, but it didn't really help the Saturn, which is a shame. I didn't own one or any console of that generation, but I played some import Japanese games on one (KOF, Guardian Heroes...), and I really think they should have been brought to Europe too!

    • @jbmaru
      @jbmaru 6 років тому

      Really? Well that's me, 16-bit guy... Although I did buy a Saturn in the early 2000's, I wanted to play Thunder Force V... That one's Japanese only, right? :)

    • @jbmaru
      @jbmaru 6 років тому

      Not sure about the price now, but it's worth it for the play. In my top 3 Thunder Forces, it is second ex-aequo with the III (IV would be 1st)!
      The PS version may be more affordable, and has its pluses (bonus pictures and ships).

    Wow, a FREE copy of a Mega Key. Here in Russia we had some NTSC US and Japanese carts for SMD (a big bunch of them were bootlegs, but there were some originals too), but you HAD to buy the Mega Key yourself and it was pretty pricy at the time. There also were a lot of original Pal Asia and European Pal SMD-clones, but I had a Japanese region console myself, so I had to buy that Mega Key to play Pal games.

    I still remember these days. The Saturn was quite popular in Portugal even a few years after its initial launch, but Sega just did not have enough exclusives to keep it going. Despite owning a Saturn at the time, and having played Dragon Ball Legends, I had no idea it played such a key role in keeping the Saturn afloat on our home market. The game was not great, even back then, but it was the closest thing you ever got to the Anime experience in video game form.

    My dad is from Porto, so as a kid in the 90’s we’d go every summer to visit family. I remember seeing dragon ball z before it came to Canada and was HOOKED. During the commercials it was all about the Saturn. So me and my bro decided that’s what we wanted for Christmas. By the time Christmas came though, I wanted an n64 or a PlayStation. My brother was still convinced from the marketing we saw in Portugal to get a Saturn…so we did. There were barely any games lol. I saved up for the dragon ball z game for weeks, only to be told I needed to buy an adapter as well lol! Man I miss Portugal and the FOOD. Portugal is the BEST🇵🇹

    I have been playing this game since I was 9 years old, and I still love it. People need to understand, before the Budokai games were released, DBZ games were a huge rarity. Also DBZ The Legend was the only game for a long time that actually felt like the show. I think Supersonic Warriors 1 and 2 got a lot of influence from this game. It’s still my favorite decades later.

      @@st1ka The only thing in Spanish is the box. The game is the same as what they got in France. Same with UB22 and Final Bout in PSX. All in French. It was horrible with the story mode in Butouden 2 for the SNES, by the way. Until the PS2, all DBZ games in Spain were in French.

    I was always aware of Sega's dominance in Portugal (and pretty much all of Europe) during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, but wasn't aware the Saturn had been such a success here! I was born a generation too late to witness that sadly, though I was fortunate enough to grow up with the Dreamcast at least (and Game Gear too I guess haha). By the time I became interested in the Saturn and its library of games it was already too late for me, though a lot of my friends had relatives that owned one which always made me jealous! I'm surprised I never saw second-hand Saturn games in Dentinho actually, because I remember at one point you could buy used NES and Mega-Drive games in their shops.
    As for The Legend, it was the actually the game that got me into Dragon Ball! I played it from beginning to end, though it was the PS1 version and in Japanese haha

    Nice video, but you should be careful to spread straight up lies as you have here. "Multi-Platform games were always better on the Playstation".
    Sorry my friend, but you are either ignorant or just lying on purpose, not sure which is the case here.
    What you SHOULD have said was "multi-platform 3D games were almost always better on the Playstation".
    98% of all multi-platform 2D games were superior on the Saturn.
    Mega Man 8, Mega Man X4, Darius Gaiden, Soulkygurentai and the list goes on. The PS1 simply couldn't hold a candle to the Saturn in terms of 2D power with any developer who had two brain cells to rub together.
    This should be common knowledge by 2020, so please be careful to not spread any more misinformation about Sega's 32 machine.

    • @st1ka
      @st1ka  4 роки тому

      I'm not spreading lies, you simply took my quote out of context. I was referring to the public perception.
      Moreover, the examples you gave me were not very good as of the 4 titles you named, 3 of them never launched in Europe

    • @ThoughtformsOfTheSubconsciousM
      @ThoughtformsOfTheSubconsciousM 4 роки тому +1

      @@st1ka
      Totally understandable that you were referring to public perception in Portugal at the time, however this was not clarified in the video - it comes across merely as fact rather than being prefaced by something like "most people in this area seemed to believe...." or "popular opinion at the time was..."
      That would be been preferable and in fact circumvented any confusion that has arose from incorrect wording.
      Regardless, it is a terrible that the games I mentioned were not released in your territory.
      Especially considering all of them except Soulkygurentai WERE released in the US, and it's beyond obvious how Sega of America failed on all fronts to bring over quality games from Japan and yet these titles still would up there, but not in Brazil somehow.
