Flying is much to do about confidence and ofcourse weather! More importantly it's the training which you get...your relationship with your instructor is often a key element to how you get to grips with what is involved. Your right that it's not just about starting at one and going through it sequentually but a good structure is so important. I often wish I had completed my PPL but circumstances were not in my favour. Good luck and keep safe.
Yeah we do follow the UK PPL Syllabus which takes a student through a logical progression through their practical training. I was just trying to explain that the Theory studies don't start at book 1 and end at book 7, during self-study, students can expect to jump between the different books. Hopefully you'll be able to restart your flight training some day :)

Really enjoying your series. I made the mistake of not taking my moms offer of paying for flying lessons way back in the very late '90's when i was 14 or 15. Been getting into the flight sim games after remembering that and regretting. And lived not a mile away from my local county airport.
And talking about meteorologist one of my many cousins went to school for that and has done some storm chasing but not as much as he would love bc he paid out of pocket too not sponsored.

Doofer !! I have been following you for a few years now and you have taught me a lot. I am so happy for you to be doing some REAL flying and working towards your PPL. Good on you. I am really interested to know how much your Simming experience is/will be helping you. I will be watching your progress with great interest.
It's given me a very solid foundation to build upon and has definitely helped me understand lessons and the theory much quicker. With real life training, the biggest differences I've found is adjusting to specific language which is used in the theory textbooks, learning the things we tend not to think about in the sim world such as Threat and Error Management and real world "flows" that we do to make sure the plane is correctly configured after takeoff, before landing etc.
Under management I would suggest you add checklists.
I think we bundle that in with Pre-Flight Checks
Fantastic insight and great content. Can I ask? I’m looking for a Saturday job within a flight school (if possible), as I work 6 days a week. I would like to be surrounded in the environment to help me learn and gain an insight. What jobs can I possibly apply for that some one with no experience in this field? Plus I have no GCSE and no admin experience.
Hey Roxanne, for someone looking at entry level jobs, you would probably be looking at work as a Receptionist or an Operations Assistant where you welcome customers to the school, take phone calls and do some basic admin jobs such as scheduling aircraft for flights and maintenance.
What kind of work experience do you have currently? What sort of places have you worked before?
If you don't have qualifications or experience, I would reccommend at least being comfortable with how PC computers work, learn how to write and print a word document for example. Learn how a spreadsheet works. Learn some things about General Aviation as well, such as different types of small aircraft.
You don't need any specific experience to get started in aviation but as long as you can do the basics and you've got a positive and proactive approach to work, that will help a lot. One thing to be aware of is that if you're looking to just get your foot in the door, you may need to volunteer your time to help one day a week. But if you do amazing work on that one day, that could open a door for you for a permenant job down the line.
I'll share how I got my job. I just moved back to Inverness from London and I didn't have a job but I have my passion for aviation. So I contacted my local flying school Highland Aviation just asking if I could help their instructors by making tutorial videos for their real life students. They weren't advertising for a job, I just emailed asking if my video making skills could benefit them. Fortunately for me, the boss invited me down for an informal interview and explained that they could do with an extra Operations Assistant on a part-time basis during the "summer season" which is generally busier. So we parted on good terms, I'd made a good impression with my passion and enthusiasm for working there but he still had to convince his business partner to hire another member of staff which would be a big expense for the company. After a couple of weeks I get a job offer to work part-time which I took. As I started working there I fully committed to learning the job as quickly as possible and doing as much as I could to make as much of an impression as I could. I was doing everything from answering phone calls and scheduling flights to cleaning windows and cleaning the toilets. Then as luck would have it, about 6 weeks after I started, one of the girls that worked there suddenly went AWOL one weekend and ended up quitting her job soon after that and I was hired full time. So moral of the story, a lot of passion and effort can make it work!
