A controller for the Steam Deck. I never thought I'd see the day when we'd be using a controller for a handheld system. Back when I was a little kid and dinosaurs roamed the Earth, there were ways and means of plugging a Game Boy into a GameCube, but it seems that was just the beginning.
The GameCube was so innovative. By modern standards, connecting the Gameboy to the GameCube was very impractical and the GameCube itself was not considered a success, but the technology was so ahead of its time. I really do think that it helped to shape modern day gaming. Also, at risk of revealing my age, I think the N64 was the first system to link handheld to console with the transfer pack. Although, to be fair, it did just read the cartridge and did not directly connect to the handheld device.
Im a big fan of hori controllers. I already have a hori fight commander pad and hori fighting stick but i might look into getting one of these in the future.
@@DeckHeadGaming The fight stick is a mix of metal and hard plastic and feel unbreakable but you kinda expect that for $200. The pad is pretty much the same sort of feeling you get from a 1st party xbox controller.
Does the Steam Logo button bring up any menus on the Steam Deck? What about the Quick Access Button (3 Dots). Does that bring up the Quick Access Menu on the Steam Deck?
@@GAMINGMATRIXXX Yes, the Steam button brings up the Steam menu and the Quick Access button brings up the Quick Access Menu. Games which support the Deck's controller scheme also show the same buttons as the Steam Deck, as opposed to an X-Box controller buttons.
Excellent! Thank you for confirming that. Just one more question; How is the D-Pad on it for Fighting Games? That’s what I will primarily be using it for on my Steam Deck.
@@GAMINGMATRIXXX I tested out the D-pad. I personally prefer the feel of the 8BitDo controller's D-pad because there is less resistance when pushing in the buttons and it feels more like a modern controller. Having said that, the Horipad's D-pad functions perfectly fine and didn't hinder the inputs. It actually reminded me a lot of using a SNES controller to play Street Fighter 2.
That would be a much more elegant solution. Unfortunately, I think all controller designers have fallen into the trap of middle button = power button, and users have also come to expect it.
The sticks are not Hall effect. Good question re non-Steam game support. It is supposed to function as a regular controller and has a toggle switch for changing between Steam mode and X-input mode, so in theory it should work, but I didn't think to test it. I'll try it this weekend and get back to you.
How do you find the triggers on this thing? What I love to do with the Steam Controller is bind the right trigger to aim down sights on the half pull, then shoot on the full pull, so I can do both in the same motion and free up the left trigger for other binds. Can you do that comfortably here or would it be too easy to misinput?
You can set a full pull and half pull response on the triggers, but mechanically the triggers have so little movement in depth when you press them, it's near impossible to physically do it.
I also missed out on the original Steam Controller at the time but was very lucky and found a second hand one that had barely been touched. I think the user didn't know you have to apply a firmware update to enable Bluetooth and immediately returned it. Even then it was about the same cost as a new higher-end modern controller, but still worth it in my opinion.
@DeckHeadGaming it's still looks like a very good controller. I dont think it's a must buy, but it looks like something you could have in your collection. If you have an Xbox or Ps5 controller or the 8bit do ultimate, there is no real point on getting the controller. I got the Xbox and Ps5 and the 8bit Ultimate controller which has the Switch face buttons. I will also get the 8bit do Ultimate C controller the wukong edition which is cheaper and very effective.
3:25 you can customize that idea with any other button or trigger with modeshifts. The controller can also be wired, it's not only bluetooth. I do wish the controller had trackpads also but it's biggest pro is having touch sensitive thumbsticks for gyro activation. No other controller has that.
If space is a problem, I would happily trade the d-pad for a trackpad
It probably is the only place it could go.
_Came into this world with my deck in my hands_
I want this for my pc.
With Big Screen Mode, it makes perfect sense to use on a PC.
I want an 8bitdo steam controller with 2.4ghz. The additional buttons featured on this controller would be nice.

How does the material feel on their other controllers?

Can you turn the LCD steam deck on from sleep mode remotely with this controller?
Unfortunately no. That would be a great feature.
@ ah ok. Thx for the quick response.
Its coming to the US in dec. Its on Amazon now
Nice! It's a solid controller for any Steam user, so it should sell pretty well.

@GAMINGMATRIXXX I haven't played any fighting games on it yet, but I'll try it out later today and get back to you.

Why don't they make an update for a software and change on/off by holding start and menu buttons, for example.
That would be a much more elegant solution. Unfortunately, I think all controller designers have fallen into the trap of middle button = power button, and users have also come to expect it.
I guess the sticks are not hall effect? Does it work with non-steam games without adding them to steam library?

I miss out on the original steam controller. Its very expensive, now. But I'm curious with this controller. Thank you for the video.

The Hori pad Steam controller is finally coming to the U.S in December through Amazon.
Awesome! It's such a good controller that it's now my main.
how did you know
Does it have gyroscope?
It does. I forgot to mention it in the video.
It does and it's good too

I didn't even think to set a button to activate mouse mode. Thanks for the tip!
is gyro good
The gyro is great!
I wont lie but it looks nice and small.Perfect for my small hands :D
Ergonomically, it does feel pretty good 👍
I dunno if it's your lens or not but this thing looks fucking tiny in this video lol
I had the same thought when I was editing 😂
does it have gyro?
It does. The gyro is very good on it. My apologies, I forgot to mention it in the video.
