If I could give people 3 pieces of advice about nail clipping it'd be this, first swaddle them in a towel, it'll make them wriggle less and easier to isolate each limb, 2nd if your not experienced I would avoid any of the fancy hair guinea pigs like silkies and texals as thier fur will make it more difficult, 3rd black nails are much harder to trim as you basically cant see the quick....so for first time owners I would recommend getting a short haired female with a light paw coloration (but avoid gingers, chances are its a cuy from the andes that was originally bred for livestock, they get huge and are super skiddish)...for actual technique after i got them all swaddled up, I hold the piggie against my chest and ill get one leg in between my left middle and index finger to steady it, then just trim like i would my own nails.

@@iccinnamon yeah go nuts, i used to have 3 guinea pigs, Rocko a coronet which is like a silkie with a rosette on her head, she had long fur and all black nails and is the pig I learned on, so it wasnt easy for my first one. Duke he was just a regular short hair and my personal favorite and Stumpy was a texal, I would heavily recommend against texals for all but the most seasoned owners, they start out looking like little buffalos then those curls explode into a fro that is very hard to maintain.

@@iccinnamon also for what its worth i did just use everyday nail clippers, but the animal ones are easier to use. Regular nail clippers you gotta use the edge of it almost, while holding it parallel to the nail and following the general nail shape, once you get good it'll actually be quicker than the scissor style but this video isnt for people who can do that lol....also if you do draw blood a general rule of thumb i use is, if you wipe it off and it stops bleeding almost immediately dont worry about, it'll be fine.....lastly your treat method is sound but wait til the end, eventually the pig will learn to associate a nail trimming with carrots and stop being so hard up about it because they know whats coming.

As much as I love my piggies, I wasn't told that one was a long-haired guinea pig, so she's fun to give hair trims, but I'm lucky that both have clear nails to see. 😂🥲

This is SO important to do regularly. I was so worried at first, and yes, I have messed up once or twice, accidentally hitting the quick. I always feel so guilty! But the alternative is too long nails, or packing them up for the vet, which is just stressful AND expansive!

Even though I’ve had a Blumpkin Schmoogie for I think a year now it was just last week when I cut their nails myself and alone. I remember someone had told me before that bathing them and getting them really tired out read before you do their nails helped so that’s what I did.
They were fine with me handling them and they were so tired. They had hardly any flight in them so I got the nails done fairly quickly and I only nicked one quick ever so slightly.
So, go all the way, and bathe your pigs before you do their nails . It makes the nails easier to cut as well.
    Thanks for another great video.

having trouble and nothing works, that are too scared to eat anything once ive grabbed them. they wont stay still and i get scared and frustrated i just put them back in their cage. nails are getting long and they won't let me cut them :( one cries and the other moves too much and no amount of food helps. i even give them an entire veggy and fruit platter but they can't be bothered by it until they are back safe in their cage

In that case, it may be the best to find your nearby vet or groomer and ask them to clip their nails for you. I’ve don’t it a few times too myself.

I'm sorry to say but it looks like your guinea pig is a bit over weight you shouldn't feed them so much. how much do you feed your guinea pig hes a big boy try to ween them down off of treats during the day and skip them all together and get the portions sizes down to an acceptable level my god your over working his heart and organs and his feet must be painful with all the weight he has to carry. you should reconsider what your feeding your guinea pig please and make a new video with those changes okay thank you .

Popcorn is a big boy by birth, this bones are also bigger and heavier too. That being said, he was overweight 3 years ago but he’s at a healthy weight ever since. The vet also said Popcorn’s a larger breed and he is healthy. Nice observation of his size tho! ❤️
