    Here's some observations about this thing that I really don't like doing, yet it must happen about every 20 days.
    Sharp clippers are very important so you don't squeeze the nails; they can feel that through the quick. Squeezing raises the pressure of the blood in the quick and it retreats into the foot. I use Green Bell clippers, and they are so sharp that you can actually cut tiny bits off the end of the claw without having to span the entire circumference.
    Some of my pigs have claws that grow outward from the toe, making them easier to cut, and some have claws that immediately curve straight downwards following the flesh of the toe. These much are harder to do because I have to precisely get the stationary edge of the clippers between the toe and the nail so as to not accidentally cut the toe. I don't know if some pigs just grow this way or they wound up in a permanent pattern because of neglect, because they are all from other people's homes who didn't want them.
    It wont work on the truly black nails but the tortoise shell colored ones and especially white nails allow to shine a decent LED flashlight right through them, and you can actually see the quick and the blood in it. You don't need to do this every time but its a a great visual to make future judgements by before cutting.
    I have one of my daughters hold the piggies so I can focus on the paws. It a luxury not everyone has.
    In the beginning I had trouble understanding what the "correct" length should be, until I understood to use the foot and toe as a reference. The edge of the claw should touch the ground when they are standing. They aren't fingernails! The object is not to make them as short as possible!
    This job is impossible without the proper glasses if you cant see well. I have a dedicated set of reading glasses with a much higher diopter than I normally wear, which brings the range of focus closer to my face. I can then get within 8" or so and really really look closely.
    This last thing I have heard and it seems to be true in my experience, but I cant say for sure; the quick can grow longer than it typically would if the nails are allowed to overgrow. If you try to bring these poor piggies back into spec on the first cut, you may hurt them. Most of the pigs that come to me have overgrown nails, and by precisely cutting as short as possible WITHOUT touching the quick, it will, in time, retreat, so that you can bring them back to normal.
    I keep a little bottle of cornstarch by, just in case, to apply if I make an error.
    Treats and yummy things REALLY help piggies take their mind off an experience they would rather not have.

    My older gal Peanut has clear front nails and all black back nails it goes pretty well like I said it a cover her hear and pull it all the way over her head and under her front feet then arm her inside my elbow holding that towel so she isnt running forward trying to nibble us and run out. It works for us! She has been really Happy alone and popcorns more now than she ever did when she had Oreo and Reese's to live with? She was a Bully towards Reese's and Oreo would intervene ❤ I miss all their Silly ways together but its nice to see Peanut really enjoying herself and run up to us now as she never did in the passed. She now allows Pets and ear rubs even falls asleep while I do it. Bath Time and Hair Trims Health Checks are still so rewarding and We will Love her until her last breath. Right now she is Healthy and we'll be going in for insicer Trims next month. She has had her yearly physical and her Vet said, Weight and All appear Normal and Healthy. Thank You Saskia for making it so easy on us to Care for Our Little Mighty Ones over the years! I Love and Respect You❤

    Our Reese's had the spurs, I would clip just what was sticking out and then I'd put some Olive Oil or Coconut oil on the left spur to soften things up.
    I only have Peanut left now and she has always been the Bully! I sometimes have to put a dish towel over the front of her head so she wont run out from under my arm and she nibbles us too😂

    • @shapegirl1
      @shapegirl1 4 роки тому

      Same! Try shining a light under the nail, and you might be able to faintly see the quick. This has helped. You can try putting them under a phone, I sometimes use my laptop bc it’s bigger and he, and she can sit easier. Hope this helped!

  • @jakob6433
    @jakob6433 4 роки тому +1

    One of mine is a crawler, she always wants to crawl up to my shoulder making it harder to cut and teeth check. Or she nibs me with her teeth telling me that she don't like it. (She never wins)
    I used to have a flat stone slap tilted up a bit were I'm feeding them. As I was hoping for a natural grind of their nails as they stand on their hind legs. But it took up to much space in their fold, so I took it out again.
    Love watching you and all your lovely helping people around you. We all learn so much from you. Thank you from Denmark.

      Yes get some Terramycin - you can buy it at Amazon. It is an over the counter antibiotic eye ointment. Good luck!!

      Try CBD on the piggys ear. I used to take my gang to the vet for nail clips, because it takes 2 of us to hold my piggies. They squirm so much, but using CBD keeps the piggy calm and I can clip their nails by myself.

      I use my palm to push the face closer to me and that way they cannot turn around to bite. Try watching the vid again, maybe in slomo to see how I do it. It is hard to explain in words.

    I just recently rescued a piggy who was treated very poorly. Her and her partner were living in a tiny cage and her partner unfortunately passed away. When I went and picked her up I held her and noticed how crazy long her nails are and it broke my heart. Last night I tried trimming her nails and she was biting me and it made me sad because I believe they are hurting her. What should I do to keep her from biting me while I cut her nails? They’re the worst nails I have ever seen in my life..💔

    my one guinea pig has like deformed from paws, his toes curl inwards and so do the nails so they can be sooo tricky to trim, i adopted him, and he came from a hoarding situation so im guessing their nails were neglected

    I cut my guinea pigs quick, she didn’t squeak in pain but I put her on paper towels and she bled for over 30 minutes???!!! It looks like a ridiculous amount of blood and it’s so hard for me to even see how short I cut the nail bc she keeps trying to run and has long hair. I finally put cornstarch on here after around 20 minutes bc I freaked and hoped it would stop bleeding on it’s own bc I didn’t want her to eat the cornstarch (she tried) It looked like a ridiculous amount of blood and still bled after the cornstarch for a bit. Sadly she has black nails and I have cut one of her quicks on her front paw before but it didn’t bleed nearly this much so now I’m freaking out bc its the middle of the night and it’s the weekend. I think the ER vet is overreacting but if I call my vet on Monday morning they won’t really give any advice without me bring her in which stresses her out soooooo much.

    Off-topic question but I found out there were these "cavy shows" that put a metal tag on guinea pigs basically like an earring to "identify" them. To me, this seems unnecessary and wrong. Maybe even cruel. Most breeders do this if they have show quality cavies but I just feel like it's inhumane. I also don't support breeding guinea pigs but what is your opinion the ear-tagging thing?

      Please cut their nails if it gets too long, it's for their own health. And, they can only rely on you to take care of them. Make it a simple habit to trim their nails every 2 weeks. :)
      If you're scared to trim their nails, ask a trusted adult to do that instead (after showing them this video of course!). If no one is available to help, please trim their nails yourself. It's really easy! Just trim a little bit off and you'll notice the "quick" recede as days go by. The "Quick" is where the blood vessels are. If you cut into the quick and the piggy's nail bleeds, it is *NOT the end of the world* as Saskia said. Use styptic powder/blood stopper on the nail if you have it. If not, you can use corn starch.
      Good luck! :) :) :)

      Bubbles Rodriquez another trick i use to stop the bleeding if you cut to far is a black tea bag. Completely soak the bag in water and then hold it to the nail that was cut until the bleeding stops. My dad came up with the idea because he remembered my sister had to put tea bags in her mouth when she got her wisdom teeth out because something in BLACK tea causes the blood to clot
      Hope this helps 🙂

      Bubbles Rodriquez the tea bag method takes longer than using styptic powder, but its a great, effective option if you dont have styptic powder

    I think your technique is great. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter to my Luna pig. She fights me every step of the way! It's very frustrating for both her & I.
