    I understand my comment on Jerry's impact on "Pop Culture" wasn't worded the best and is gonna ruffle some feathers. I have all the respect for Jerry and what he did. I was meaning more along the lines of "modern day" pop culture and as a way to say how crazy John's impact in the guitar space has been in his short career

      Until Mr.Mayer can sell as many tickets as Dead and Co. to the sphere playing his own music catalogue…Then and only then can you say he has a bigger pop culture significance. I doubt that after 40 years of JM being dead that anyone will be touring his music to sold out crowds..just saying.

      @@SugaryCoyote Pessimistic? It's just reality, Jerry Garcia has a ton more "Pop-Culture" clout than John Mayer. I don't even think John Mayer would argue this. Saying other wise it terribly ignorant and silly silly thing to say. Ben and Jerry's ain't naming any flavors after JM anytime soon....

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  3 місяці тому

      Your comparison of JM's music being played after he's dead like Jerry's makes no sense as the Grateful Dead were a group with multiple musicians that are still touring, like Bob Weir who was one half of GD and is literally in Dead & Company. So of course he is still playing that music so long after Jerry's death. And they wouldn't sell out crowds without John who has introduced the Dead to so many people and draws a decent amount to these shows purely just because of him. Same thing with comparing a group to a single artist selling out the Sphere. Not really a fair comparison especially because John is such a large part of why Dead and Co even exist and are as successful as they are.
      So while I get your sentiment about Jerry's influence and am not arguing that necessarily, your points just don't make much sense.

    I was at the three sphere shows last week. Woulda been nice to hear more of the alligator but it was definitely more high-gain than expected. Would have been difficult to play the more twangy strat songs with that set up. Shame he didn’t bring it out again all weekend

      He definitely did. He was playing a black one and a red one in the late 80’s outfitted with the new midi rigs they were using. Mind you, not the entire show, but he was definitely playing strats live just 6-7 years before he passed.

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  3 місяці тому +4

      I was speaking more to the fact that no one is going to pay the prices that the 83 BLK1’s get for anything with Jerry’s name on it because in the modern day landscape of people playing guitar John is way more impactful and significant. “Pop culture” was probably not the most correct word.

      @@JustinJeskeLet me say this first. I love what you do. I’m a musician. So I love all the “music nerding” about all the gear and specs. It’s brilliant. I say this with all due respect. You should check out how much Jerry’s real guitars have sold for at auction. I’m not speaking for the fender masterbuilts. They are just copies. As far as todays cultural relevance, Jerry’s gear is sought after by collectors and auctions off in the millions. I know you just fanboy for John, and could care less about Dead n Co. and frankly it’s totally ok. I get it. I’m just saying you may be overstating Mayers importance, and undervaluing Jerry’s. The fact is, he’s playing a copy of Jerry’s Alligator in a GD cover band, in which he’s a hired gun to play for money. Which is fine. Nothing wrong with that. I think with that said, it’s important to see the chasm of difference between the two. Again love your channel. All the best.

      @@zendesign3704 Bob Weir is in the band, dude. They always alternated songs on albums and live shows because they are both awesome front-men. Jerry and he were guy Aa and Guy Ab. They are different but they are nearly equal, there is no doubt that Bob's playing is kinda different and weird, but it's one of the things that hold everyone else's freakyness together. His voice is strong as heck and soulful
      There is no way it's a cover band because it's still friggin' Bobby

      @NewHopeAudio Wow where do you come up with this stuff? Literally hundreds of sell out shows post Jerry, pre John. Many As in Allot. And No doubt orders of magnitude more GD cover bands on the planet than JM cover bands. Infinitely more recorded GD and JG material in circulation on Earth than JMs. Not even remotely in the same universe, and that will never change. John's a great guitar player, made better by being in Dead &Co. It's his involvement in D&C that increased Mayers visibility, not the other way around. Suggesting otherwise is fantasy, most definitely is NOT JM sustaining the Deads legacy by playing in D&C. Really not meaning to bust on JM but the folks coming from JMs music commenting on the Grateful Deads legacy to 50 year long well travelled Dead Heads such as myself, are a bit full of yourself. You sound kind of silly, you just don't know it. To be clear, on it's best night, D&C has a small fraction of the power live as the GD did on great nights. Not even close, totally different levels of power and energy. D&C is a fun band, good music, awesome musicians, and very special songs makes for a great night out. Not nearly the energy of GD shows, not inside or out. At musical peaks the 2 bands are not remotely comparable. Can definitely get a good swig of the spirit at D&C shows. At GD shows you'd be drowning in it. No valid comparison to those that have spent allot of time at both. And various Garcia Band configs live over the years. Bob Weirs solo efforts back to the seventies. I'm very much glad JM is in the seat and playing his ass off. He has grown into the music allot, can tells he is fully there and going for it. I can only imagine what it must feel like for him or any great artist to be able to play like that. Losing himself to find something else. Must sometimes be borderline orgasmic, certainly spiritual.

      You’re so right. Who cares that they just had the actual Alligator in the room with them so they could take the measurements to duplicate the neck shape exactly, the ageing to the body, the string tree, the pickguard, the bridge, the input jack with the Alembic Blaster, and had Josefina take the actual guitars pickups and recreate hand wound versions of them.
      God what was the Custom Shop thinking. They just threw stickers on it and called it a day!

    "John Mayer's name has a lot more weight in Pop-culture than Jerry's" Might be the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. Jerry's Wolf guitar sold in 2017 for 1.8 million dollars. There will never be a John Mayer (no matter how long he's dead for) guitar that will fetch anything close to that at Auction...

      guy rolled eyes when he said it. he wasn't saying it's fair. his eyes said that he doesn't agree with it.
      That doesn't make it not true. John was really big before he was in the Dead. He still would be huge if he wasn't with them. There is no doubt that he brought his fans' eyes and ears to this wonderful band and that he has let no one down by doing it. I really love when he does blues stuff. i wasn't a fan of his singles because I am not a pop music guy, but his Hendrix covers? Man, they are some of the best you will hear. He's a G that takes that fanbase and still plays what he wants to when they come to his shows. He exposes the pop kids to awesome stuff and he's a cool guy for that.
      To be honest, i can't think of a better living singer/guitarist that could ever be the guy to sit it Jerry's spot. John respects the music and Jerry. Susan Tedeschi and Samantha Fish are murderers, too. They could both do it

      Oh contrare, mon frare(sic)! John is a Guitar Hero for my generation, and the next many generations! His guitars WILL sell for millions, also, someday. I mean, C’mon, just pedals that he ‘tests’ out on stage skyrocket on the used market as soon as people see that he played them once. And, some of those said pedals are or were considered not that great pedals before John touched him. Granted, I’m not taking ANYTHING away from Jerry. Jerry Garcia is a monster in his own right, but don’t negate John just because he’s ‘current’.
