Great story! I love these little 22s from the old days

those rounds my friend are CCI Stingers, very deadly and likely to function well in that small size pistol due to a larger powder charge.

A pocket carried .22 saturday night special is better than a sharp stick, I carry one when I take out the trash in my house pants.

bearcruzer60 I have one exactly like your Grandmas. This is the first pocket 22 I bought in the late 70"s ,still have it and shoots great. Keep it clean and well lubed. I paid $70 brand new back then. Yes, it is a Sterling 302. Remington and Federal standard works great . 🤠😎

My condolences for the loss of your loved one. Great little pistol just keep it cleaned up and lubed. Stingers are great rounds. This one is definitely a keeper.

Good little pistol. I purchased mine a year ago. It is smaller than my 380 so easy carry in pocket. I cut a back pocket off an old pair of jeans to use as a pocket holster. It's just a liner for your pant's pocket. It's never jammed and that's shooting a mixture of old dirty crap ammo as a test. Don't trust the safety. Carry with safety off and no rounds in the chamber.

I do have this exact pistol and I was able to just pull the safety lever straight out (sure it had to be in the perfect position for this to happen.) Anyway I cannot find anything to help with figuring out how to get it back in. Any experience with this issue?

Very nice and thoughtful tribute (and a very cool little pistol).

I would NEVER carry this pistol loaded or even store it loaded. It’s a primitive striker fire style mechanism with no sort of striker safety block as found in modern pistols. The safety only locks the trigger but any jolt or drop could easily dislodge the firing pin (striker) from the sear causing an accidental discharge. I believe that’s what the lawsuits were about.

I have a like new one. She's a jam master. lol They are still cool. Sounds like a cool grandma. My pistol came from a lady that didn't want a gun anymore due to age.

I had that Sterling pistol purchased in 1974 or 1975. I traded it in after one year for the Stainless steel Model 302 when it came out.. Those are CCI hyper velocity Stingers. The Sterlings were designed and sold before Stingers and other hyper velocity 22 ammo was available (look up the brands). The case is longer than standard 22 long rifle. Depending on the chamber dimensions, the bullet may extend into the barrel and create higher pressure than the gun was designed for. Using the higher recoil Stingers broke the ejector on my Model 302. It's why you should always wear shooting glasses. I could have gotten a piece of broken metal in my eye. I couldn't find a stainless replacement ejector part so had to get a blued one from Numrich Arms parts. I would only shoot standard high velocity rounds in it which it was designed for it unless you need a paperweight. The firing pin could also break. Since the company was put out of business by a tragic lawsuit after a couple years, parts are iffy. UA-cam has a video with more details. The safety is not highly reliable compared to other pistols.. Never carry a fully loaded pistol in any pocket unless it is protected by a nylon or leather pocket holster to prevent contact with the trigger.. You could shoot yourself or someone else. You can make crude sights using plastic, nylon, metal and strong hot glue but the pistol really isn't made for more than 7 yard targets. Many gun shops have this pistol on a do not accept in trade in list. Either keep in in the family as a tribute but remember, younger members may not be safety savvy with this pistol. They may shoot someone as happened in the lawsuit. Shooting those Stingers or other hyper velocity ammo could cause a tragic malfunction. Sell it and get something more reliable like a 380 or 9 MM unless you know it's limitations. Your gun savvy grandma would thank you. Some people might say this is the worst 22 pocket pistol but many German revolvers have it beat. The pistol also has a tendency to jam unless it is kept spotlessly clean. There are videos showing how to take it apart for cleaning. My suggestion is to watch every video you can find on it and then Google it.

I got my Sterling Arms in my divorce, 1988, and took it out the other day, and the bullets were all tarnished. We'll, I figured that was no good and bought new, and a cleaning kit. That's when I realized I had no idea how to clean it. Any idea how i can get my hands on an owners manual?

Sorry for the loss of your grandmother. The sterling pistol is a solid little gun. It does best with Good Quality high velocity ammo.. However do not use hyper velocity such as cci stingers. It will destroy the gun, they are too hot! Good luck. Regards

Some of these were made on 211 Grand street Lockport NY, I believe
E&M machine in Buffalo NY(Ellicott ave)? Made the earlier versions.
I worked at the place in Lockport, very low quality control. They
closed because of a few lawsuits and violating Federal Standards by
putting serial numbers on after they have been test fired instead of
when the breech was made, they did this because the guns were so crappy
they wouldn't pass the test fires and Sterling Arms didn't want to
report all the bad guns they were making.

The heel release for the magazine is what all European pistols used to, and still do in some cases, have......many American companies over the years copied the heel release style for their vest pocket pistols such as the Sterling!

Cool little gun. How reliable is it?

    •  7 років тому

Judging from mine, SUPER RELIABLE if fed quality ammo. AND no truncated cone bullet ammo, i.e. Remington Viper style. Round nose solids or hollow points. I tried them in mine and it was a jam-a matic. Failure to feed / chamber problems. Round nose style it eats like potato chips. I take mine out and chew through about a hundred rounds every year for old time sake. Can't hit anything past 10 yards but it's fun to just blast away making noise. Lively little sucker. Inside of spitting range loaded with quality Hollow points she's deadly. CCI Stingers are a real treat. She jumps around with those but that just makes it more fun.
