I've fancied getting a Plasma Pedal for a while, both because it looks amazing and I really like the sound. However, now I've heard that story about the founders, I REALLY want that pedal. They sound like my kind of people and they deserve all the encouragement and aupport in the world.
After thinking for a few minutes about crazy fuzz pedals, I've come to realize most of the crazy SOUNDING ones look kinda normal, and most of the crazy LOOKING ones tend to sound normal. The turd is a good example. It sounds very usable, but most people would say it LOOKS unusable. But then you bring up something like the zvex wooly mammoth, which looks kinda normal, yet the only time I've heard a usable tone come out of one is on a Billy Talent song
Yes, I love when you make pedal videos! This other channel called "Guns and Guitars" does a few good roundup videos of good inexpensive pedals, you should check him out!
A normal distortion/OD pedal works by amplifying your signal (via. FETs, MOSFETs, ICs as in the case of the rat, or Opamps in the case of everything else) then generates clipping by sending you signal through diodes (LEDs in some, Silicon in Tube Screamers, and Germanium in Klons), which cut off or "clips" the signal at a certain voltage, generating your distortion sound.
I love these types of videos! I know if I was looking to get a certain pedal, I would click on your video first! The sound of the pedal combined with your playing always sounds great! :)
Really cool stuff, Sammy G! I just can't get into fuzzes, man... I've tried, and maybe there'll come a day when a fuzz will be just the thing I need for a certain song or part, but I just don't have a practical everyday use for 'em... Really cool review though, Samauri... I REALLY dig the "FuzzBoy" and your idea for different "FX Cartridges" is BRILLIANT!
Wanted to mention my personal favorite fuzz/distortion pedal: the EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold. It's a one-knob pedal that goes from total silence, to decent metal tone, to super fuzz, to "let's be Sunn O))) now." I love it to bits. =)
How the hell did the Fuzz Factory 7 not make it onto this list? The thing is wacky and unpredictable as fuck, yet still makes some of the thickest fuzz tones I’ve ever heard
Cool show as usual. None of these are making it onto my next-3-fuzzes list (ctc constellation, wampler velvet, and kma fuzzly bear), but it's always interesting to see what's out there, especially if it's *out there*.
On a whim I got the Plasma Pedal a few months ago and it has been fundamental in shaping the sound of my new album, it is such a great and unique sound, it is far from just a gimmick. As a side-effect, it also got me to quit looking at the neck of my guitar while playing, since it gave me something far cooler to look at while I was playing ;)
We can hear how much you like the Plasma Pedal when you play it. I mean, everything sounds great, but that piece of solo using the plasma is absolutely wonderfull!
Love the Effesk Bus , looks & sounds so bloody cool & the Reefer . To be fair I liked them all and my least favourite was the FuzzBoy . I was also impressed with the Turd sounding so awesome ,just being an on or off pedal. Wicked demo & playing !!
I'm a fuzz freak, the low muffy fuzzes sound cool and pleasing to the ear when you're playing by yourself but get burried easy when in a fully band context.
I'd love you to try out some of the crazy fuzz and other pedals I make, but importantly I think I can make a pedal out of a consol shell. Thinking snes, then integrate the actual pedal circuits in the carts. So you infact just swap out a different entire pedal like you would a game.
And everyone laughs at the Turd I have until they hear it, and that's despite the fact that I'm a marginal guitar player overall. It does sound great, honestly..
The Plasma Pedal (in your extended demo) sounded kind of like what was used for the opening riff of “Run Run Rudolph) bout that May just be the chord progression.
