If you’re looking for a relatively cheap, dependable instrument then this is a good choice. If your budget is tight, then maybe look at the Squier equivalent! 👍
Daren, I like your review very much, it is honest and musical. I tend to play along those lines myself and I can see how you make this bass sing. You are a great musician!
Lemon oil, indeed! Gave it a good drenching and wiped it off. After a couple of applications, that dryness that you get with pau ferro seems to ease somewhat.
Thanks for your video ! I have a question tho : I’m considering purchasing this bass and as a Jaco fan I’d like to remove the pickguard. However I know some jazz bass has a kinda cavity, like a route from the neck pickup to the control plate so you can’t really take of the plate and leave it like this. Is it the case for this one ?
@@DarrenLockMusic thanks for your answer man. Really ? You don’t remember any cavity from the neck pickup to the control place ? I heard today’s jazz basses have a kinda cavity going from the neck pickup to the control plate, also the hole for the neck pickup is way bigger than the bridge one which is very tight. So basically without a pickguard it would not look flat and neat like the Jaco one for instance. Anyway so you reckon that if I take off the pickguard it would just look like the Jaco ? Interesting
That's not a cavity - that just routing. I thought you meant an actual cavity under the scratch plate. Well yeah, why would you want to remove the scratchplate to reveal that? That's just daft!
@@DarrenLockMusic to give it a Jaco look, if you look for jaco jazz bass model online you’ll see that there is absolutely no routing or anything under the plate, it is perfectly flat and clean. That’s why I was wondering if I could just take the plate off to get that look 😊
So I take the pick guard off all my jazz basses and sadly this one does have that cavity :/ outside of that I absolutely love the instrument and it plays well.
May be a stupid question, but do you think it can compete with the american pro ii fretless? I want to invest in a good fretless bass but wouldn’t double the price for some fancy minor upgrades.
I don't consider any guitar above £1000 good value. The Squier fretless with some modifications might be worth considering if on a tight budget. Alternatively, always consider giving a home to a second hand guitar.
@@DarrenLockMusic Alright, I know what you mean. Since I’m selling some gear I could generally also afford a Am Pro II. I don’t have the possibility to directly compare them and don’t want to throw out € 1.800 if the MIM does the job as well, so your opinion helps a lot. I own a Mexico P-Bass and it feels great, just wasn’t sure how it is with fretless basses. Seems like the Player will be the better deal - thanks for the quick reply and the great review!
Great demo, Darren. (Pardon me if this is arrogant.) Much of what you’ve done here with this Fender reminds me of the bass parts I laid down on this solo record of mine, played with a custom Carvin (now Kiesel) fretless I purchased from a good friend. ua-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_ntwQDTZn_PTvcQNNl96JNlijLkLJVuNdw.html&si=rnFTS-1xPCCr8_C0 Looking at your MIDI controllers, I’m reminded of a misconception I had while watching the documentary about the recording of “We Are the World”. I can recall looking at the mixing consoles (or ‘desks’ if you like) and wondering if there was a synthesizer keyboard (for what I knew when I was five in ‘85) down where the faders are.
@@DarrenLockMusic It's OK, You can write it here ;) Nice review otherwise ! ( I like the dark fretboard as most others I've seen look quite bright ) Cheers !
I lemon oiled the pau ferro fretboard up before doing the video. Sometimes they can look really pale, but I'm overdoing it with the lemon oil. I still can't find how much these things weigh. And I don't have any scales here!
The bridge pickup is the magic. Pretty much instant Jaco.
I’m planning on getting that bass, it looks and sounds so cool!! ✌️☺️

your finger board looks soooo much better than how they come! classssy
you said lemon oil ?

I did swap out the pickguard. I don’t remember there being any cavity though…🤔

@Darren Lock, I have one of these myself. I shimmed the neck and tweaked the truss rod so it plays like buttah.
What degree shim did you use?
@@slogans777 I believe 0.02 Basically hardwood veneer.
Very nice exposition of the sound spectrum for this beautiful bass. Thanks!
Glad you like it!

I notice that the Mexican made versions do not have the strings going through the body. Did you/anyone notice any difference in sound sustain?
Nope…
Great looking guitar. I now have bass envy.
Love the Caravan record in the background! :^)

Nice bass sounds great, it really suited your playing
Fretless May mean frustratiion if you are not a very good player...i can't afford this fantastic instrument.
Thankfully, I can afford it and I can play it, so all is good! 👍
Forgot the weight !
Damn...
