We are USA residents and recently visited Amsterdam. We just used our smartphones ( via Apple Pay ) to tap in/out for ALL transportation. No ticket or travel card needed whatsoever. It was extremely impressive, and likely the best option for visitors from abroad like us!
This is the comment i have been looking for. There is not a single UA-cam video that mentions Google or Apple Pay for transportation in Amsterdam. We used our phones in London to tap in and out of tubes, buses and trains. So easy. All these cards she’s mentioning here are so damn confusing. You have to know absolutely every minute of your itinerary to know which one to get so you can save half a euro.
@@ebeyslough I agree...so easy! The one downside is the lack of discounts when using your phone. The cards seem to offer offer a much better value in some instances. But for a visiting a short time, the savings are negligible. By the way, you can use Google/Apple pay everywhere in the Netherlands. We also used out phones for the train to/from Haarlem, etc... Good to know we can use Google/Apple Pay in London as well! Last time we visited, that wasn't available.
@@farmecologist3395 so we just went through both London and Amsterdam, and contactless mobile payments like Google and Apple Pay work perfectly for all transports like buses, trams, subway and ferries. There is one minor difference between the two, but potentially huge. If you and your travel party happen to share the same credit card, it works perfectly in London. In Amsterdam, however, they treat the shared card the same so it won’t work. You can beep your first traveler with the phone, the machine that scans the person following you in this case will be treated as the same so he/she will end up tapping out. So in Amsterdam, make sure each one of your travel party have their own separate card (debit, credit, etc). That’s what we ended up doing.
So you just get into a tram/metro/bus and scan your phone? That's it. This is so incredible. I'm so thankful you commented. I'll be visiting from India. And I'm hoping this will work for me too.
I think that for most tourists, it simplest to just tap in and out using contactless payments (apple or google pay / debit- or creditcard), as you clearly explained at 1:20. Especially because this works on _all_ modes of public transport in the entire country, without having to use an app or to register, this makes it very easy! Thanks for the helpfull video!
Thanks, just got back. And NO CONTACTLESS on first two trains caught! Had to jump barrier and two conductors lied to me about destination of train! Glad i got two journeys free. Oh and it's far from easy and the Dutch won't help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stick to taxis if you can afford it.
Omg. Thank you so much for this video! I went to Amsterdam last november and I spent a lot of money in Schiphol with a card that didn't even work on 397. It was so frustrating!😂
Thx for your detailed and precise explanation. One question, if I stay in Amsterdam city for a day only and mainly by metro, is it okay just to get a 24-hour GVB ticket? And get it from vending machine?
Thanks for your comment. Yes I don't see any issues if you're just using the metro. If you have any very specific questions about the GVB ticket, you can also reach out to GVB and they're v helpful.
Hello, thank you very much for the video, it is very very explained! I just have one question regarding the OV chip card. Is it necessary to tap both before and after getting off the vehicle? What happens if I run out of available balance? Is it possible to reload it online or are there machines at the stations where I can top it up? Thank you very much.
Hi there, thank you for your positive comment about this video. Yes, it is definitely a must to tap your OV chip card getting on and off the vehicle. I'm afraid I don't know what happens if you run out of available balance on either your personal/anonymous OV chip card - but I believe there are varying minimum balances depending on the mode of transport. I think it's €4 for bus, tram & metro, and €20 for the trains, but it's best to double check with NS, GVB etc about this. And yes, you can reload on the machines.
Thank you for this, it was very informative! I'll have a long layover in Amsterdam (around 8 hours) during my next trip. I plan to visit the city center and do some sightseeing, mainly from the outside (I don't think I have the time to visit museums). Do you think I should get a ticket for public transport (and which one), or is it better to walk and just buy the train ticket from and to the airport?
Thanks for your comment here. If you're only here for 8 hours, depending on what you're doing, a GVB ticket or your bank card contactless function (OV Pay) depending on which is more economical. For the train ticket to and from the airport, you can either buy a ticket or use your bank card (OV Pay) again too.
Hello, Thank you for such an informative video but i just have two question I have booked a hotel in the zaandam region and if I have to travel to the city centre do I need an Amsterdam region ticket?? Also if I purchase a 48 hour region ticket on Saturday at 10 AM and I have to board train to the airport at 5 AM on Monday morning,Would my region ticket be valid or not as it is not yet 48 hours?
Hi there. If you're staying in Zaandam, you could buy this ticket but you could also buy separate train tickets/GVB tickets. It really depends on where you're travelling to plus frequency. So I would compare the costs and weigh up what's best for you. In terms of exact timing and validity of the 48 hr region ticket for your situation, I don't know for certain so it would be best to ask at the shop.
Hello. I will visit Amsterdam for 5 days. I will do Volendam-Edam for 1 day. I will go to Roermord outlet for 1 day. I will be in Amsterdam for 3 days. I also want to visit the museums. I am very confused about transportation. What can I do?
What would be the most affordable option for one spending 3 months in Amsterdam, where I’d be travelling to and from work daily with possible evening outings(probably not every evening)
Hi, can I use GVB 48 hours, for my visit in Amsterdam? My plans, Schiphol to Sloterdjik (stay at Sloterdjik) , day 1 , eksplore zaandam. Day 2 eksplore Amsterdam Central, day 3 early in the morning go to Paris by eurostar in Amsterdam Central Station. Tx fir your channel and your attention.
Hi, the GVB ticket is just for central amsterdam. It doesn't cover the trains. If you're taking the train from the airport to your hotel and visiting Zaandam, then you'll need to get train tickets. Alternatively, you might also consider some of the other ticket types mentioned in this video (which include all forms of transport).
Travelling to Sloterdijk from the airport you will be in luck, because bus 369 is a GVB bus and will work with the GVB ticket. Going to Zaandam requires a train, which needs a different ticket. From Sloterdijk to centraal station is doable with the GVB metro or bus 22 but it will be a longer journey compared to the train, but will usable with your 48h ticket!
I'm visiting Amsterdam with family (2 adults, 2 teenagers) and think the 24 Hour Group ticket via the GVB app seems convenient and best value. Does this ticket allow use of the train from Schiphol airport to the city? (Or close enough to transfer to Metro)

Hi.The iamsterdam city card doesn't cover all museums, so it's definitely best to weigh up the cost of the card with what you plan to do & how much travel you'll be doing.
The iamsterdam city card is just for travel within Amsterdam. Best to check out the Keunkenhof website as they have a lot of detailed travel information there depending on the route you take. On a separate note, I've also done a video about the Keukenhof. ua-cam.com/video/Phme3rfNXTQ/v-deo.htmlsi=1a34YlpzwYxGJolD
OV Pay is based on the distance travelled, and is the standard amount you'd pay to travel. This video deals with the different types of tickets you can make use of if you e.g. want to include museums, plan to travel a lot in Amsterdam/outside Amsterdam etc.

Myself and husband are coming to the Netherlands in September for 5 days prior to a cruise and will be going to a different town each day, but will be based in Rotterdam. What would be the best type of ticket myself and husband to purchase?
Majority of the tickets covered in this video are for Amsterdam and the region, aside from the Holland ticket. Depending on where you plan to go, I'd weigh up the cost of the Holland ticket with normal train ticket prices (assuming you're traveling by train). Hi. The iamsterdam city card doesn't include trains, and it's the only card that I'm aware of that includes some museums (either included in the ticket price or at a discount). You can also just buy separate train tickets.
Hi. Im coming to the city for 2 full days in March. Is the icard worth it? Van Goch and Anne Frank doesn't show. Thanks
Hi.The iamsterdam city card doesn't cover all museums, so it's definitely best to weigh up the cost of the card with what you plan to do & how much travel you'll be doing.
Hi, I'm travelling with with 4 others. Do I need 5 individual GVB card or I can share 1 card for my family? Thanks.
Hi there, I would have a look at the GVB website as I believe there may be group ticket options.
Thank you 😊
Can i travel from Amsterdam Central to Keukenhof with I amsterdam City card??
The iamsterdam city card is just for travel within Amsterdam. Best to check out the Keunkenhof website as they have a lot of detailed travel information there depending on the route you take. On a separate note, I've also done a video about the Keukenhof. ua-cam.com/video/Phme3rfNXTQ/v-deo.htmlsi=1a34YlpzwYxGJolD
Nice content
Thank you! :)
Is OV pay cheapper??
OV Pay is based on the distance travelled, and is the standard amount you'd pay to travel. This video deals with the different types of tickets you can make use of if you e.g. want to include museums, plan to travel a lot in Amsterdam/outside Amsterdam etc.
Very authentic content. Can I connect with you on other social platforms? I want to talk about your channel's growth. You missed a huge number of subscribers because of an SEO error and improper channel customization. If you SEO the videos, then the views of the videos will increase, and your channel will rank.
Thanks for reaching out, but I'm good thanks.
Also I'm not familiar with travel from Rotterdam as your starting point, so I'd ask your hotel or the Rotterdam tourist board if there are any special travel deals.
I’ve got a question can you get a train from the airport right to station zuid?
Off the top of my head I believe you can, but you can also check on something like google maps or 9292
