Ive experienced this. Its heartbreaking. I thought cruise deserved every award. The way he didnt call him father or dad is very real and emotionally intense. This is a broken man that lost his mother

The best part of this catharsis is that Phil really thought this was going to be a beautiful heartwarming moment between a father and his lost son, and as soon as Tom says “you fucking ass hole” it dawns on him what a horrible tragedy he’s witnessing, that he partook in creating with good intention.

At the end, I feel like it is the little boy that is asking his father to not go away.

Tommy was coming from a real place his whole heart was broken in that he was like looking at his daddy again and he was a little baby boy again he was emotionally pain all came flooding out of him and he was begging His father to come back to him and to live again because he didn’t wanna say goodbye to him and it must have reminded him of when his father was dying he was crying his heart out and he was so broken up I felt his pain it was so endearing and beautiful to see and witness.

It was like Watching a little Baby Boy trying to beg his daddy not go away .
That came from a real personal connection with Tommy since his father died from Colon cancer To nake it even more Heartbreaking Tom had a Cancer Scare himself in 2012 so he was really I think having heart wrenching sobs because he wasn’t ready to say goodbye yet and he was grieving for his own father as well and not being ready to say good bye because he didn’t wanna be alone and wasn’t ready to be on his own yet and becoming a man still a little boy at heart ❤️ he was. Having heartbreaking sobs he knew this was the end he wasn’t ready to be a man yet and grow up he wanted his daddy to come back .

Final scene is one of the most beautifully performed pieces of acting ever. Top 10 for sure. It’s fucking brutal and undeniably real. Astonishing by Cruise. What a period of acting this was for him. Eyes Wide Shut just before.

😢 Jesus Christ. That’s wasn’t from nothing. Whoever wrote and directed this scene lived that personally. That’s not something you know unless you lived it.

That was all Tom himself - what PTA had originally wrote was very soft and loving towards the father. Tom’s father was violently abusive towards him as a child and died of cancer when he was in his early twenties.

This is the scene I think of whenever someone says Tom Cruise is always the same guy or isn't that good an actor.

I know why the old man didn’t call.
It’s the same reason so many people put their parents in nursing homes and never go see them. Some people don’t like to think about bad things and when youre sick and around them, they can’t pretend it doesn’t exist anymore. And especially in this situation (in which the old man and the wife weren’t together anymore) it is easier to throw away a person completely than to deal with them. That is because a lot of people are selfish deep down and primary care about themselves and their own happiness and to be happy (even momentarily) they have to ignore others misery. That’s why they say you don’t know who someone really is until your chips are down, and unfortunately, the majority of people will let you down. And Tom Cruises character was a victim of that a little earlier in life than others. It’s important to note that we all end up here like this dude, so maybe putting up with a little damper on momentary happiness to put other people before ourselves might be apt so that there is someone beside you in the end NOT calling you an asshole.
Phenomenal acting though. Tom cruise has always had some major acting chops.

Too bad you cut off the end of the scene with the father, where the father speaks.
