VIDEO "SPARKNOTES"
1. Programs matching high school students with institutions looking for interns
- Apprenticeship in Science and Engineering (HP & OSU)
- Look on the internet
- Varies by region and physical location
2. Cold Emails
- Honestly, I just emailed a few professors and personalized my cover letter to their research papers. But I was very lucky because I only had to send about 6 emails and I already got 2 offers... but some friends who were equally qualified if not more sent 100+ emails"
3. Network with teachers at your school
- "For my research opportunities, I was very lucky to be 15 minutes from a research university (University of California, Irvine) so I had a research mentor who was a chemistry graduate student helping me with some research projects for various competitions. I was able to connect with him through a science teacher at my high school. I also had two mentors (PhD students at UCLA) last year who I was able to connect to through the California NanoSystem Institute’s Nanovation competition at UCLA. I also look for research opportunities by looking up various programs at the closest university (for me, that would be UCI) and I could easy find a couple programs."
4. Network through science fairs
- start from home
- do the simple tasks and ideas you like
- explore various fields and take a couple niche courses if necessary. once you build up that repertoire, you're going to have a much stronger resume and cover letter too
- "I did science fairs to start, and I would even network with the judges and things like that. Most of my mentors are graduate students doing research themselves and I got to know them through science fairs and competitions.
- Also, I can't even count on like 5 hands the number of Stanford admits who did ISEF at least once."

I’m so old that we didn’t need to resort to extreme measures to get into top colleges. But it may be informative to know that my roommate at Yale, while in high school, wrote to Edwin Land, the inventor who founded Polaroid, with questions about how vision works. John did that solely because he wanted to figure out some specific things about vision, not to get into college. And Land wrote back to him and they corresponded on the topic for years. Reach out, people love to help young students.
thank you for taking out time to share this!
I've always looked for a video like this but never found one. Thanks for making it!
Krish Patel of course! How’d you find this video?
@@irisfu6929 Well I have been following your channel since your reaction video and luckily you made this!

Are you Indian I'm also researching and need a friend to learn with
Hi! This video was super helpful, I’m just starting high school and was just wondering when you think would be a good time to start trying to land research opportunities. I’d feel unprepared if I only had a few sciences classes before getting involved in something like this! What are the base classes you think I should have done before applying for something like this?
Just get involved now! No need to wait. If you get rejected, keep reaching out. Next year, do try to take as many AP science classes as possible--AP bio, chem, or physics are good choices, depending on what your specific science interest is.
Thank you very much for giving us so many helpful tips for college admissions! We appreciate your help and best of wishes and luck at Stanford!
Thanks Peter!!
Where do you find the professors. Like how do you select who you want to send an email to.
linkedin
i think
Select the schools you wanna go find your field of interst and then find the faculty and then boom go ahead!!
okay so this video is a couple weeks old so you may not see this but what does research entail exactly?(this may seem like a dumb question, and I know it varies from person to person, but I’m curious!)
Depends on the field! For engineering and science you might be conducting experiments, collecting data, writing reports, etc. for the humanities and social sciences you’d still be setting up experiments or case studies, it could be interviewing people/sending surveys, and making conclusions or inferences based off results. Hope this helps!
Are there virtual research assistant opportunities? I think there might be especially because of corona but I don’t know. There aren’t many opportunities where I live, so it would be cool to be able to get one virtually. But then I wouldn’t really do anything right? Because it’s not really “hands on”. Even if I get one what would be the point then? Will I actually learn anything from a virtual research position? Can u tell me what to do? Thanks so much
Hey! Were you able to find one?
What would you include in a cold email? How do find what a professor is interested in?
What kind of research could I do if I’m not looking to go into science? I would preferably want to go into mathematics and it doesn’t seem like professors are doing research in that subject.
Math professors definitely on! Look at the university's math dept's faculty page and see what research they're up to!
How long did your research go on for in terms of hours per day and how many weeks it went on for? I want to do research this summer and am trying to plan out when to do it.
YOU ARE SO HELPFUL AND INSPIRATIONAL UGHGHH I LOVE YOU AND I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH
جميل هل تتحدثين الغه العربيه
For ISEF do we need an actual invention/device or just a research paper showing our research? I’m a little confused on the whole “research project” definition
I think it's just a research paper showing original research. An actual invention would be an added bonus
ZnatsCubing you would also need to test your research whether it be through an invention or have a computer run an accurate simulation, that’s what I did, you could also test it in some other way.
OMG you always give me surprise in the morning😭Sooo helpful
Get ready for tomorrow’s 😂😂 it’s the funkiest video I’ve made yet
what's a cover letter? also all of your videos are helping me out so much thank u!!
They're kind of like a one page application essay that ppl turn in w/ their resume for jobs
Thanks for this video, but I feel as though research opportunities are mainly for people who want to do something that involves science. I don't know what I want to do, but I'm sure that it will not be anything hugely tied to science.
Hey, Iris! Your videos are really helpful, thank you so much!
I’ve searched research opportunities in business, management, marketing fields, but couldn’t find any yet.
Thank you for the info, I will keep searching! 💌
How it went?
I got an research internship at the local uni but it was all cancelled due to the virus. Can I mention it in my EC's
Aw I’m sorry :/ and yes you can mention it in the additional info section
Heyy! I love watching your videos
Are there opportunities for research if I'm not interested in science or math. Like can Economics or maybe business ? Thank you so much !!!
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful!
Yay!! What about it was most helpful?
This is so helpful! Thank you for making this video❤️!! Also how do you know if professors are engaging in research in the field you are interested in? Is there anywhere where we can find this information? Or do we just email many professors asking them if they are working on any research and If so we write to them why we are interested?? I hope this makes sense
Usually a professor’s job is to teach and to do research, so almost all professors are conducting research. You can go on the school’s faculty page to see what each faculty member is up to, and email the ones who match your interest!
Iris Fu Thank you❤️!!

what if I'm an international student who is currently overseas and want to land a research opportunity with a US professor?
Did you find that out? I'm a U.S. citizen, but I am overseas and I want to land a research opportunity in the U.S.
@@thiagogregory1 no I'm still waiting for her to reply :')
I'm in same situation as well. If you’ve found out anything let us know 😊
Hi!! Loved your suggestions and I really enjoy most of your videos, which are incredibly insightful and informational!! I just wanted to ask if you think that I could try this sort of strategy for research regarding political science or do you think that there aren't that many research opportunities in social sciences?
Thanks for this video!! How long minimum should we stay with the research position?
Obviously, there’s no clear cut minimum, but I think at least a summer / a few months is necessary for you to go through the whole process of a research project. Sometimes, a single piece of research can take years or decades, so I think the longer the fuller your experience will be
Great Video!!Do you know ideas for research(if even applicable) for someone who wants to major in computer science?
There’s so much! I’d look at the faculty page of a university you’d want to conduct research at and see which research ideas sound interesting to you!
Honestly, anything to do with science is fine
Thank you this is so helpful! Quick question, when you reach out to professors, do you have a specific topic or do you ask for research opportunities?
I wanted to land a research position as but I'm an international student. I wonder if i could do it online
Yes you should be able to! Most research positions this summer are online
@@irisfu6929 Thanks for your advice. I will try to send cold emails now.
Ok, does anyone know if there are research opportunities in history/political science bc everyone is on science and I'm just beginning to look into high school research
I'm sure there are!! Contacts a professor at your local research university that studies history or political science. Or go on your local research university's website and look at the profiles of political science professors and see of/what kind of research they conduct.
Should I send emails for research opportunities? While I am a foreign student who can't be there physically.. will this work?
Yes! Send an email anyway and see what they say!
Thanks for the response 😊
Ahh thank you! This is so helpful! Keep up the hard work! :)
Thanks!!
are you supposed to cold email before or after submitting an application to a program? also, do we cold email the same person multiple times?
Thanks so much! I am applying for one in the next week or so... wish me luck!
You are so well-spoken. And I love the name Iris.
Is it possible to get a research position if the university's closed? Also, what exactly do you do in a virtual research position? And what should you say in your email when contacting professors so they accept you? I would love any advice. Thank you sooo much!
It seems like virtual positions are a bit limited. Check out the how to cold call/email vid for more on what to say!
Hey Iris !
Can you please help me in brainstorming some ideas for passion project ?😭
(My theme is connecting people and different cultures & spreading positivity and self-love and embracing themselves)

Ps : I texted you on Insta too
Hello everyone, I’m trying to find research opportunities related to science field. However, I don’t know any opportunities. Please let me know if you have any.
Yes!!!!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi, great video - I learned a lot of valuable information and signed up for your mailing list! There is one issue - I am an international student and I wanted to ask if it is possible to land a research position as one. I am particularly interested in business, but I still don't know if professors would want a student who can physically be there and work with them, or an online version might be a possibility. I will be extremely thankful if you, or anyone reading this comment, answered! If you have any advice, please let me know! Thanks in advance!
It is! (I know friends who did it, but it seems more difficult). I think in general, US professors are more open to taking on high schoolers. Some of my international friends did their research in the US for a summer. You could probably reach out to US professors and ask to help out remotely
@@irisfu6929 Thank you so much, Iris! I would love to reach out to you and ask you a few questions on Instagram, if possible!
nice!
Does the professor fund the whole research expenditure i.e; your stay, your Food.
I need an update! I’m about to graduate from college with my AA in Psychology and have an interview at Stanford today for their research program AHHH
hi! so i was wondering can a grad student help u write a research paper as well? even if they are not a professor? and how would u go about this because i plan on reaching out to faculty from out of state colleges, so would i write the whole thing and they would just proofread it or something? and would i publish it somewhere or is talking about it in my college apps good enough?
Hi Iris! If you cold email a professor, are they supposed to provide you a lab or do you have to find a lab? Is it just you by yourself in the lab doing the research? How do you find a good research question?
My cousin (not me technically but he explained the process to me in detail) did biology research at Columbia as well as Cornell. He cold emailed 25+ professors and eventually landed these 2. He lives in Maryland, so travvelling to New York frequently wasn't the best option. He was able to conduct all the research virtually, which I guess he planned out with the professor over zoom. He did the research working under the professor, so he worked with them personally, although its not like he did all the work while on zoom with them, most of it was done on his own time. If you live near the campus it makes the most sense that you'd work in a lab provided by the professor you connect with. If you are working virtual, you and the professor can formulate a plan that way as well.
@@maahir9 Thank you! This helps a lot.

Iris, please I just want to know what exactly do we do if we manage to land a research position?? Do we help the professor with his research or what?
Yeah!! Usually you’ll do some tasks like helping collect data, analyze data, whatever it might be!
Hi Iris! I am currently a freshman in highschool do u think it’s a little too early to reach out to professors or is it fine?
i'm wondering the same thing!! if u figure it out update us
same here
If you doubt it then it might probably be a bit early. But if you’re confident that you can potentially be very helpful to a professor working on a project you’d like to volunteer then please go for it.
jesus christ high schoolers are getting so advanced bruh LOL I didn't even start research until sophomore year of uni
ig its just kind of become known across high schoolers that passion projects and research positions are what rly gets you into the colleges you want skfjsk
where do you even find graduate students from? I can't find them anywhere.

im interested in doing a STEM research internship over the summer. Am I expected to be an expert in the field my mentor is researching? For example, if I want to do a CS research intern, should I be an expert at coding or is it ok to be a beginner/intermediate? Or is doing research more about learning
same. I really love STEM (neuroscience) but im not an expert at it
how would research at a lab thats not local work?
Thanks a lot!
How do i find the e emails of those professors?
They’re usually on the school’s website!
@@irisfu6929 Do you think that we should have already achieved something so that we could get the internship?
Or do they offer normally
Your videos are literally sooo helpful!
Glad you like them!
Heyyy. I just wanted to ask about how to find professors in order to conduct research.?
you can find them by looking at a university's faculty pages!

Hi, firstly thanks for the video. I am really curious about math and physics I m reading university and maybe a Ph.D. level book with myself but in my country(Turkey )Professors don't want high school students (I tried speak face to face) Have chance to work with professor from abroad or what can I do with myself?
American professors are very open to virtual work, just do what she mentioned, email 25+ professors and be informative, explain your situation and formulate a plan with the professors that repsond.
@@maahir9 I tried but they don't want to work with high school students
@@sinangokmen4939 college professors in America don’t want to work with high school students? Many high schoolers land research positions with professors all around America so it is definitely possible, you just have to keep emailing till you land one.
Why am I a sophomore just finding out about this 😭
Me a junior 😭
Thanks, Mate

Can u pls make a video for international students want to to do research at top tier schools is it possible for international students
I think this is possible! Check out the Stanford student series on extracurriculars. A few of my international friends in that video talk about their research experience in the US
I need an example of any Indian student because study system in India is quite different compared to other world here every one cares only on based of marks
If it possible pls do it mam
@@jyothineerudu9474 There's an Indian student in the Stanford Student Series video, and he did research in high school. However, I also think if you want to do research at a US institution in high school, the process would be the same for you as any other student from any other country. You just reach out to the professor via email and ask if they have a remote position to offer
Can I know this properly on your insta pls
Hi Iris, here at the Student Research Accelerator, we're interested in exploring a direct partnership with you (not College Advisor). Could you share the best way to contact you? Alternatively, we can be reached through the contact form of our website: StudentResearchAccelerator.org. Keep up the awesome work that you do.
i was wondering. since we get to pick classes for our schedule. do we need to pick the time at a certain time range?
and do we get something like this from the school "courses need to take, to graduate for the major you pick"? or its like a freestyle type of thing. where i can pick whatever class i want?
hey, i'm not sure if you're referring to hs or college. i'm assuming college, but most college require you take the "general education and major requirements", then for the rest (probably 80% of your schedule), you can pick whatever classes you want. And classes will be offered at given times, you pick which class time option
