      I would say that since that usually only applies to top schools, it's not too unreasonable to expect since they're looking for the brightest and most driven minds, i'm sure there are a lot of good unprestigious colleges that don't require you to have written 15 research papers at 16

    Hey, I watched the entire video and I'm grateful for the advice. Your insight into the process of research actually helped clear a few misconceptions I've had about conducting independent research. However, I do have a couple of questions in pursuing internships, as you mentioned, and getting resources for these various research topics. Firstly, I just recently got into pursuing research fairs or competitions, such as MIT Think, ExploraVision, Blue Ocean, etc., but I don't feel as if my concepts add too much to the already developed processes. I am adding originality to the projects through custom machine learning models or slight modifications to current systems, but they aren't absolutely new. How do I add this level of complexity to my conceptions independently? Also, what would be a good way to email professors regarding research? I've emailed many professors from various local universities(I live in Michigan), but I['ve had no success so far in being able to receive an opportunity anywhere. Also, provided that I haven't their level of knowledge, in what ways would I be able to contribute significantly to the work that they are doing currently? I realize that these questions are highly subjective, so I understand if you can't answer them with an absolute answer, but I would appreciate any insight you have. Also, just as a side note, would you be open to me sending you an email diving deeper into what I previously mentioned so that you can get a better understanding of my position? Thank you.

    • @preachingp
      @preachingp  Рік тому +53

      Hey Dhruv, I'll try my best to answer your questions with the experience I have. The point you bring up about finding novel "concepts" is very interesting because it mirrors a thought I've also had A LOT as I go through the research process. In high school, I would watch TED-talks of people identifying some brand new chemical that indicates an oncoming brain disease or make discoveries that seem to have no methodical way of finding. The truth is that there are so many ways to tackle research and incorporate new creative thoughts that, unfortunately, I really don't have an exact answer for you. In the video I talk about how I approach research, but there may be more creative ways out there that better explore the those "concepts" that you want to make a core part of your research. Perhaps I'll make an updated guide if I learn more from my experiences doing research in college. However, what I do believe is that creativity is an extremely valuable element in this process. The more exposure you get to the field you're doing research in, the higher the chances are that you might be able to connect the dots and find something new. I remember reading a somewhat "random" article on how diseases can have symptoms and biomarkers in different areas of the body and another publication on how brain disorders can influence other physiological aspects. A little while later, I came up with the idea of exploring heart rate data as a means of predicting seizures, all because I had seen those papers earlier. Hope that makes sense.
      This response is getting a bit long, so I'll quickly touch on your other questions. Don't feel like when you reach out to professors you need to invent the most brilliant idea ever and then tell them that you can make it a reality. I have some experience in machine learning, as do you, so I try to see if I can integrate some of this past knowledge into the work being done by the professor (or in their field). I put together a proposal detailing some area I'm down to explore and incorporate that into the email. The most important thing this whole process shows is that you're engaged in the work they're doing and that you have some skills and prior experience with research. If you're having trouble getting opportunities locally, expand your net and try emailing other big schools that have research programs or opportunities.

    • @dhruvhegde7529
      @dhruvhegde7529 Рік тому

      @@frostad5829 Yeah It eventually did work out for me. Rather than just cold emailing, I began to do a bit of research and also got accepted into a summer program at a local university where I was able to meet several professors and get the ability to do research over the summer. I would recommend you try and get similarly involved in the way I did if you want to find some opportunities, for my direct cold emailing didn't work out for me and I emailed around 80-90 professors. I am not sure where you are located, so I don't want to give you his information for false hope since his work is mostly in computational physics and engineering that requires you to go to the university in-person and also have an understanding of the subject already, but I can say that you can definitely find success if you go through a program of trying to network when you have a summer program.

      I'm a little late to the party, but allow me to be the messiah.
      To get to your questions:
      1. There are multiple ways to get your research out there. It can be a research article published in a peer-reviewed journal, a conference proceeding, or even a patent, if the work leads to the manufacturing of a tangible product with a unique yet significant application.
      If you can't find a journal, you can also publish your work as a pre-print with certain repositories like arXiv until you find a better journal for your paper (don't worry, no one can steal your idea here).
      2. Yes, it does matter. The better the *Impact Factor* of the journal, the more relevant and key your findings are considered to be.
      However, a publication is a publication nonetheless, and a publication history of any kind will get you a favourable impression from the admissions committee.
      *Side note:*
      You don't necessarily have to do original research. You can also write a review article which is basically a compilation of recent literature in a specific domain/field. Very useful for commentary or to critique any developments in said domain/field.
      Or you can write a book chapter where you compile literature to explain information like you would find in a text book.
      There are also certain journals for young professionals. A good example is the one mentioned right above my comment.
      Hope that helps!

    • @preachingp
      @preachingp  Рік тому +6

      I try a mix of different approaches to keep my costs low. First, finding the exact machines is a little annoying, but if you do enough reading into different research papers and through scouring the internet its definitely possible. From there, you can either rent the machines (if they are portable and available), reach out to a local lab that might have them (and then go there to test), or use some contacts to get access. Sorry the answer isn't the most repeatable for every situation, but really the most important thing is to reach out to people and try different options that seem realistic. It usually works itself out from there.

    Yo Pratik, I need your advice. I recently got to know from a friend that a small HBCU near me has a lab that's working on Alzheimer's research would LOVE to get some high school students. However, I also know that there's a large pharma company that has a paid internship program has a connection to my teacher, who encouraged me to apply. I also know that I've applied for a few of those research programs that release all the way in April. Would you recommend A) going to the small (not well known) college for research, B) Waiting for the Big Pharma to release applications for the season, or C) Perusing more clinical exposure because I might get into the research programs I already applied to? I dont want to get into too many and have to reject offers after these professors accommodate me, but I also don't wanna be overconfident and have no backup plan. What's your advice?

    • @preachingp
      @preachingp  Рік тому +2

      Given the situation here's my input. The actual place you do the internship isn't really that important, in contrast to what you're doing there and whether or not you're enjoying it (special exceptions are really well known universities or programs). In regards to getting paid, I've never really valued it that much because it's typically minimum wage and I wasn't to desperate for quick money in high school. If I were you, I would take in some new factors to consider when deciding where to do your research. Think about how likely it is that you will publish a paper in each location. If you're unsure, feel free to reach out to the professors you might be working with or the people coordinating the program to see how realistic it is (and if you would have a reasonable role as an author on the paper). I think rejecting offers shouldn't be much of a worry unless you personally know the people, so you're better of at leasing sending in a decent application to these other 2-3 programs you're interested in. If you already have a few essays written that you can reuse it shouldn't take you too long (hopefully).
      Hope that clears things up for you.

    Hey Pratik, I want to do independent research in quantam physics but the math understanding required is really high and since I'm only a freshman taking pre-calculus right now, I don't know how to get any background information and understand it. Any advice?

    Is it required to have a research mentor to conduct research? I have written one research paper and I had a mentor, but I’m not sure if you are required to have a mentor to perform research.

    Hey, so I'm a rising sophomore in high school who's super interested in STEM specifically engineering but also the arts. Would research be a good option for someone like me (my age and interests ) to add to their resume? Even though as of right now I love 1 research-based and 1 creative career?? Also would schools like Duke and UNC chapel hill offer research for high schoolers (I live in the area by them)

      Yes it would be a great idea! I’m also a rising sophomore in high school and I want to become an engineer and actor and I wanna go to ucla or usc. It would definitely help to do independent research bc it would give you a huge advantage in college applications.

      Being an expert in coding is CRUCIAL for college these days. You should be already on the same skill as cs major seniors in community college. Then use the coding concepts to craft a project in your own imaginative and creative way
