Thousands of entrepreneurs come here every year to seek funding for their startups but can you imagine that 60 years ago there was no such thing as Silicon Valley and this culture did not exist. Today, we're going to talk about how this culture evolved here in Silicon Valley and start at Stanford University.

The story about the carpet stores is just so fascinating... Also a bit worrying!
Marina, In the U.S. we don't use the term ministry of defense. Until 1947 it was the Department of War and Department of the Navy. In 1947 the Department of Defense (DOD) was formed with the services under it. My Dad worked for Kodak up Page Mill Rd until he retired in the 70s. I grew up near Cupertino when there were orchards. I remember companies such as Tandem Computers and Memorex that were once big names in technology. In the early 70s when I went to other parts of the country and told people I was from San Jose, they had no idea where that was. Thank you for telling the story of my home.
So now you use the term "Department of Defense". Am I right?
@@nightwind9493 yes
i remember memorex!
It is okay. It’s not a problem

Thanks, great perspective on SV history. If you haven't already done so, check out Steve Blank's talks/videos, and also the story of William Shockley and the Traitorous Eight which led to Fairchild Semiconductor and later Intel. The origin story of SV has many parts though, glad you talked about Fred Terman.
Great video. VC investors should be more famous. Great history lesson.
Amazing video as always
Wouldn’t have know all this without watching your video

Woww the hachi video device is sooo cool. Never knew it existed 😱
Enjoyable video overall, but you neglect to discuss the creation of Intel and AMD which is also very foundational to Silicon Valley and entrepreneurship.
She found carpets more important to discuss than Intel & Amd importance in the area. 🤤
I love your videos
I really love your way of speaking
Great video, truely inspiring! I am a Founder from Germany and hope to get inspired by your videos, to have a chance to inspire people in Germany, the way you do in Silicon Vally. HoweverI have one question to the carpet stores, does your hint suggest that the family is worried about a financial cirsis happening in the near future? all the best and keep going!
The story about carpet stores was really interesting. I did not know that!

this video is way better thant a history class, thanks a lot
You are an inspiration to me! Please make more videos about business and Living in USa
Wow, I learned a bunch after watching this video!
This is awesome episode. I like the story of Stratford *
I totally agree with your comment at the end about history, "I didn't like reading about wars; I didn't like reading about people killing each other". The history taught in lower schools (at least the schools I attended) were mostly that, not something more on the creative side like how Silicon Valley developed, how people like HP collaborated to build something new and innovative, etc. There was another video "History of SV" that I watched recently which explained how vacuum tubes and radios were very early innovations in the area and helped create what SV is today. Those are the things I find highly interesting.
Awesome ❤️
Amazing video Marina! Much useful :) Can you do a video with any millennial entrepreneur who started his/her journey in Silicon Valley and has a successful business today?

Hi neighbor, Crescent Park here :)
By the way, I work for the Navy in Monterey. The organization I work for was part of the original worldwide web.
THIS is interesting. Do you work for DARPA, Mark ?
DARPA, together with the wide area networks, was mentioned at one of the classes I took at the Warsaw Technical University, many years ago.
Since then I dreamt of moving where I could work with wide area networks.
Many years later, wide area networks became wide world phenomenon known as Internet, and I live in the Sillicon Valley 😄
@@mirka No Not DARPA, near the Naval Postgraduate School.
@@mirka Where in the valley do you live. I live in Gilroy now and have a reverse commute to Monterey. If you look up FNMOC you will know where I work.
@@ralphmarkasher FNMOC sounds exciting. I live in the SF Bay Area, near the East end of the Dumbarton Bridge.
Was in Monterey/ Pacific Grove for the last weekend 😄
nice view
Keep going:-)
Love you
1st time seeing your vedio and I am amazed.
Is here anyone from India 🇮🇳 ??
Ok good TNX
can you show us the house where silicon valley tv series was shot
Thank you for telling this story, but I have to tell you something that kind of grated on me is your pronunciation of the word 'silicon'. It sounded like you were saying 'Silicone Valley' which is funny because 'silicone' is a material plastic surgeons used to use to do breast augmentation-- which, of course, is totally different than the element silicon used in semiconductors. I believe the word is better pronounced 'SILLuhkun' with the accent on the first syllable and the last syllable pronounced with a short 'u' sound. Yeah, I know I'm being picky, but it's something I notice.
Also the author Tom Wolfe has a very interesting essay in his collection 'Hooking Up' called 'Two Young Men Who Went West' which is about the men who started Fairchild Semiconductor and Wolfe gets into a lot of Silicon Valley history which I thought was fascinating and you might like it, too.
Thanks again
