  • I've always incorporated flashlights in my lighting arsenal. And with LED lights getting more powerful, you now can light people and make it look professional. All you need is a few gadgets and some imagination.
    Any flashlights that you guys recommend ??? I'm always on the lookout for new ones!!!

    That's pretty interesting. Never expected flashlights would be this handy in films

    At 4:55, the artifact you're referring to is caused by the Pulse Width Modulation on the LED. Some LED products use PWM to control the brightness of the light--it's basically strobing the light at a rate that is faster than the human eye can detect in order to reduce the amount of time that the LED is illuminated, saving battery. Sort of how a fluorescent light strobes at 60hz, causing noise if your shutter speed isn't synced, except PWM is a much faster pulse--it causes interference with the camera's shutter speed at almost any shutter setting. You'll generally find this in LED lights that can dim, since it's an easy way to control brightness in an LED light.

      Blaise Douros Exactly right. It's the same type of artifact you will find when shooting NTSC mode in countries that use 50hz electricity

      Especially b/c most portable video lights are LED anyways, these flashlights have pretty much the same kind of bulbs and put out the same kind of light. It's a no-brainer !! Lakeside Productions

    It's amazing that with the democratization of low light cameras, these lights are a actual solution. Certainly having a small portable and affordable kit has huge advantages when on a budget. Keep being creative so we can all tell better stories.

    the strobe effect is usually an effect created by two un synchronized digital devices. The flashlight just as a screen is the emitter, and the camera the receiver. If the emitter turns on and of (strobe, which as far as i know every screen does, and some flashlights) at a certain amounts per second, usually faster than our eyes can perceive. And so does the camera take picture frames per second, but often at a slightly different frame rate. This causes the wave effect, that you only experience through a camera.

    That artifact is caused by flickering of the LED being out of sync with the shutter speed of the camera. Most flashlights don't flicker as they do not need to use PWM (Pulse Wave Modulation)

    • @ShanksFX1
      @ShanksFX1  10 років тому

      PWM !!! Now I know, thanks Gabriel Marigo de Castro , I wonder if it costs more to put in a PWM or if it saves money for the company making the lights.

    • @jakecarvey
      @jakecarvey 9 років тому

      Shanks FX I believe most LED lights would include some sort of PWM to regulate the power supply

    • @jakecarvey
      @jakecarvey 9 років тому

      jake carvey Non LED lights (tungsten bulbs) would not need PWM

    • @trevorbernard4477

      Gabriel Marigo de Castro
      Old topic I know, however, can't you just change the fps or shutter speed to hide the flicker?

    • @leticiali
      @leticiali 4 роки тому +1

      I can't really tell from the video what you meant by the artifacting... but PWM is more an issue when the LED needs to reduce its power output (at low power settings) such as what happens with LCD display screens. Perhaps using them at full power will reduce/eliminate it?

    do you look at/consider color rendering index of light sources?
    an extreme end example of low CRI being low pressure sodium bulbs (orange street lights), *even if* you correct the footage or white balance, the effect is immediately noticeable.
    I'm not sure where LEDs are, i assume they're not too bad, but not tip-top either

      Hey. I've got some bi-color led panels and they're great. But I had a very similar idea and am looking at buying a few of these XML T6 tactical flashlights and basic rosco flash gels to do the same thing. Even had the idea of using clamps and ball joints along with bendy tripods and additional clamps to afix on whatever in outdoor shoots. They don't have to be color perfect. Use the led panels for basic key and fill and use gelled led flashlights for background and smoke and hair kickers.
      Still a good idea? I love being able to use battery on set instead of having to power by mains.

    geeze that torch is huge for only 400 something lumens.
    ide get a thrunite TN12 for 45 bucks and up to 1050 lumens and its small.
    Ide check out the fenix hl50 and hl55 I beet you like you can adjust the coasts focus but still.

    • @ShanksFX1

      Rapid Pulse Modulation, that is the issue probably. Some flashlights are designed that way to save battery.
