- HOLOGRAMS are indeed the future.
Its only a matter of time that we will be using and seeing holograms in our everyday lives.
The APPLE corporation is currently trying to develop Holographic technology.
So why not try and make some Holograms!!!!
Glass, Mirrors, Fog, Mist, Steam, and a Projector is all we used to create the illusion of a hologram.
When holograms eventually become a part of mainstream culture these old techniques shown in this video will still play a factor in the creation of the technology that takes us to the Holographic revolution.
What do you think will be the next step that brings us closer to the Holographic revolution???

If I had the money and work ethic I'd set up a Pepper's Ghost stage at anime/comic conventions and put on a show where live performers interact with animated characters.
In the meantime, I'd love to figure out a multi-layered Pepper's Ghost box to display short animations in 3D without glasses.
Love it . Nice to see somebody doing what they love .
But how do I get the mist hologram to work convincingly enough to scare away those meddling kids and their dog who are trying to stop me from finding the pirate's gold?
Haha, nice one JonasPlanck !!!
Were you filming with a BMPCC and the old firmware? Noticed the black hole sun quirk in the clip at 4:19
NightHawkInLight Actually my Canon 60d does the black hole quirk as well. Always wanted to try the Black Magic Pocket Camera.
Love your channel by the way!!!
Shanks FX Interesting. I thought that issue was unique. You could certainly make great use of a BMPCC with your already excellent level of quality. For some time now I have had a hologram video on my to do list, though of a much more simplistic nature than you've achieved here. If I go through with it I'll be sure to link this clip as a further resource to my viewers.
Thanks for sharing this. That was so inspiring...
... I will now try to create some
Hey Joey, You are the master of light. Light is faster and none destructive of all things. When the last thing expires it's light will continue at 186 miles per second to who knows where. Be a pioneer and bring us along on your coat tails.. please.
I might have to use that quote Ken Ward !!!
Cool quote but I just have to point out that it's 186000 miles per second
ive always enjoy just imagining stuff that i just cant describe, and CGI fx is the perfect way to show other people what im always imagining when i stare off into space. Im also a movie fanatic im just so intrigued by how they can create a whole world that doesnt even exist just with some simple tools and a conputer...but the only problem is, i just dont know where/how i can get started into the realm of CGI
Finally. Another guy from the future.
“I don’t think we could ask for a more beautiful evening” - stares creepily into the camera…
INCREIBLE !!
Dude, I just wanna spend a day in the magical video shed.
jordiniman it's magical but it gets messy real quick!!!
Shanks FX Holy crap. You responded. It IS magic.
Have you tried shooting fog through the same tubing to achieve the effect? I'm curious if it would be dense enough, if you could keep it consisent as the mist flow...?
jordiniman
Tried with fog, too thick, not enough control, a tleast with the tools I had.
Beautiful work!
Now if Microsoft also had this on the Windows phones, there could be the true Cortana AI on there. That would be cool.
very cool technique!
this channel should have WAYYY more subscribers
what's more to add to this is that Boeing is working on force fields that absorb and distribute impact for modern tactile and Light/ Laser Weapons. Now how dose that tie in to holograms? If those force fields are perfected to the point where they can deflect and reflect light and force, then my friends we will have the nessasary means to create Holograms that we can not only see but touch as well. And since those force fields can do that all they need to do is be able to move to change robotics as we know it as well.
Thanks for sharing this. That was so inspiring.
Really enjoyed this video!
I like this guy. He seems really down to Earth.
This is probably the guy that's going to invent the holodeck suite.
1. He's stoned off his tits and talking at 3 words per minute. 2. Nothing here has anything to do with holograms, it is Peppers Ghost, a near 200 year old optical theatre effect.
Nice to see one of our Glidetracks getting used.
cool effect, it'd be a lot of fun to play around with and experiment. Thanks Shanks FX!
it was fun, but all that mist and moisture did make me nervous with putting my gear in danger. Luckily gear made it through the misting!!!
Beautiful video! c:
Hey Shanks FX you are still awesome.
Great teaching and sharing Thank you.
pretty cool, i will probably use this technique for a music video
AlphaMaleVisuals Nice, please share video with us when its done!!
Great job Dude...
Nice!
2:37 makes me horribly uncomfortable somehow..
Also, Gorillaz live concerts did the tupac thing too i think
thecultguy I was paying homage to a movie with that line, anyone know what movie I'm quoting????
Shanks FX I want to say Dr. Lecter, but I can't quite place when it is said..
Shanks FX Close Encounters of the third kind?
pseudoartiste Bingo!!!
Thought more people would get it, but instead, just creeped everybody out. Knew I should have listened to the wife, when she told me that part would be jarring. Maybe Steven Spielberg will get a kick out of it.
Shanks FX Haha maybe, to each of their own i guess. I thought the time lapse video of the night sky after compliments the phrase really nicely.
What kind of glass is used for the first method?
There is also the 3D persistence of vision display, though this is a bit more complicated than the effects above. viSio volumetric 3D - POV display
awesome vid^_^ my fav hollogram is miku hatsune and vocaliads i'd loved to see done with phones or anything eles it would be epic
The clothes steamer was a great idea!
Found it at a thrift shop for $15 bucks, where many of my ideas come from !!! Thanks Matthew Bellis
:D Caught the Close Encounters of the Third Kind quote!
T Casey The only one!!
so im still a little confused on the tupac hologram, peppers ghost technique. obviously the positioning of the glass is very important, in the drawing diagram you had in the video the glass was positioned next, and almost underneath the reflective surface, does the reflective film and the glass have to be that close to each other to make that specific moment happen?
The Microsoft Hololens produces the appearance of a hologram by using the Ghost Technique for the perspective of each eye, so that what you see appears to be an actual hologram. It also uses technology similar to what is in the Xbox Kinect to respond to your gestures, so you will be able to manipulate the holograms using your hands. And it will be out this year, running Windows 10, so that you can run many of your apps in it. In 3-D. It seems they are beating Apple to the market on that.
Holograms are definitely the future, and it's coming faster than you think.
Really like your content Mark Whalberg
Sweet, thank you :)
great music
what program can i use to create hologram video ? for the piramid.thanks you
i love your video! it's so cool by using the steam
but can i ask how do you make the content?
i'm doing some 3D hologram as well
i combine four side of the object's video and make it as one
but i'm not good at building 3D models
is there any good way to make the 3D content?
your videos always interesting. And i love music) Your works is very good. After watch your video about create starfields i start bild same thing) And in this time your work looks amazing. Thank you from Russia)
MrDmitriy5555 Glad ur spreading the word of SHANKS FX in Russia!!!
I want to see a hologram biased off of light beams or lasers that interact with another light beam or an inert gas that could re admit the light.
I dig it, man. One small critique, though. You kind of sound like a robot trying to impersonate a human. To narrow it down, it's the pauses between sentences combined with a lack of inflection.
"Dont you?" Is a question, so you want to throw that inquisitive uptick in pitch.
I really love what you are doing, so please dont take that feedback the wrong way. You've got a very interesting video, even without dialogue.
Keep on rocking.
Holograms, augmented reality, super small computers. The future is going to at least look awesome.
Amen to that!!!
it's crazy you live in the same area I do.
Great video! Any recommendations on a good projector for this sort of thing? Also a software that would enable me to create moving things to project? Thanks :)
I mainly looked for GIFS Ingvar Jacobson to project, anything with nice thick lines with a black background seems to work the best. You can only get so much detail , so simple objects and animations work best.
Could you provide more insight as to what you did to get the mist? Did you make your mist, or was it store bought misters?
Going to use this for music video, trying to project people into the video
I have to say, looking at your video and setup is very entertaining. But don't worry im working on a real-time hologram display that records the subject for interaction between 2 people. it will have real form. no more tricks. you can sleep good tonight.
Damn thatwas good
Do you think this would be a better alternative to trying to do a hologram for a film in post?
Just depends on the look you're going for ***** , just about every hologram u see in movies is done in post, but I like to do them In-Camera, just to show its possible.
So, do you have any particular sources that go deeper than the video about these holograms? I am really interested , but would like to to a bit of research!
Elvis Borges Just kind of scoured the web for anything with #holograms but def was most inspired by the keywords "vapor display"
Shanks FX Thank you for your help! (research in progress)
All personality lol great video
So in oder for holograms to work we need a medium to reflect the light, so can lasers colliding at a fixed point create that medium or point where the hologram is seen? The mist and steam is great but if we can use an alternate light source to create an invisible medium, it would be much better. Visible light can be the hologram and perhaps use the invisible spectrum to create the medium for the projection.....just a thought.
I think you are a creative genius. You are amazing.I spent some time to find a company I read about not
long ago looking for WIZARDS for their new high tech company. Its called Magic Leap out of Miami Florida.
I hope you check them out . You could have the dream job doing what you love.Best RegardsBrooke
Nice to see one of our Glidetracks making an appearance. How were you using that?
Thanks Alastair Brown , tried putting projector on a Glidetrack and create some movement to the background. Didn't make the cut, still playing around with that idea.
Shanks FX Sounds interesting. Let us know if you do anything.
Didn't know Mark Wahlberg knew about holograms!
I used that same Pepper's Ghost set up for an FX class I taught (but I used a Reboot Megabyte and Lando Calrissian figure rather than The Count). The young ADULTS in the class were astonished and couldn't get their heads around the non-CGI, camera-less illusion. It was a real hit.

Great stuff! Have you tried projecting on fog?
Yeah I tried fog, but the thinner the mist or fog, the better. The more a room gets filled with fog, a more faded and un-distinguishable image you will get.
FYI, we are on iPhone 13 and it can't make holograms or has the gesture app.
If I'm not mistaken Microsoft beat Apple to holograms with the hololens which is scheduled to come out this year
xarchangeles but that is not a hologram because it supports with camera combination of ar+vr= mr. nobody can see that and also you can not pass through it.
"Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope."
Love the video!
I am currently organising a fair about visual communication. I would like to make a hologram of a person greeting the guests at the entrance. What do you think I will need to make that?
Thanks!
no mention of the touchable hologram research done in japan using em responsive particles?
Didn't have time, maybe next time if we revisit the subject.
you gotta agree though, that stuff is awesome! here comes the holodeck! :D
Also. What do you use as your C-stand to projector adapter? Homemade?
Yes Cory Heimann I drilled a hole in a piece of wood and used a 1/4 metric bit
with some washers and some 1/4 metric wing nuts for the projector to mount onto.
Thanks!
how do you actually make the video? a 4 face pyramid video?
Who edited this? It's unnecessarily long, don't you think?
Hi Shanks. I'd like to make this for a tribute I'm making to my daughter who recently passed. I have tons of pics and videos of her. Problem is I don't have all the cool equipment you do. I do have a projector which was actually hers. Plz help any suggestions would do. I'm not EXTREMELY savvy in things like this but I'm a quick study patient and have nothing but time. Thanks.
The futur is the GRAPHENE
no mention of the hatsune miku and her various "concerts" using holograms???
Yeah, I wanted to include her, just ran out of time making the video. Those holograms are amazing by the way!!!
this this is
i still wonder how to make it haha
yu-gi-oh!
December 2019, Iphone 11 is here and is the same shit since iphone 6, only more cameras.
Well that was cool but didn't really explain how it's the future other than another gimmick for Apple.
I honestly have a idea for a hologram concept that is true 3-D and that stills uses the fog screen idea for it. My hologram design will work by shooting a thin flat horizontal layer of mist from multiple nozzles or maybe just one nozzle and will be moving upward at a high speed at the same time there would be a laser in the center of the nozzle projecting changing layers of a curtain shape(like a MRI scan) Thus creating a 3 dimensional object. I also want you to try my idea because I honestly had this idea for about a year so hopefully you reply. please comment
Austin EvidenceChannel Sounds feasible , Kickstart it!!!
Shanks FX I CAN'T Kickstart it, I am only 17 and a junior, and I am waiting to go to college to learn how to build robots and soon after I want to try and build my hologram design and hopefully it works. And if it does, I hope I can show it in a video one day.
hey shanks you should work hard man maybe one day you will make touchable holograms
Could you do this on dry ice?
FerrariDMC , I've thought about using Dry Ice, I think it would work.
Apple got a patent? Colour me surprised. And it's based on the double parabolic mirror technic that's been around for decades if not longer? Patents are so broken. A patent should require a working prototype, not just some scribbling on a sheet of paper.
now just combine this with thalmic labs myo or leap motion (if you dont know what myo is go to this website: thalmic.com)
If honesty were mandatory this would be titled: Creepy stoned asian man very slowly describes Pepper's Ghost for the umpteenth billionth inept time on UA-cam to bad music.
hi ..... please please please reply to this ... its really important please ... need your help
+PRIYANKA DAHIYA he never replied? if you want maybe i could help you, but its probably too late
All of theese videos should renamed to "Creating crappy reflections that may look pretty cool but its not even close to a hologram". Haters welcomed.
apple patenting a hologram tech is a step backwards not forward.
unless its 3 dimensional. i give very few shits about holograms. its not hard to project a 2-d image onto transparent things.
Maybe Paden Snell , but try and not ruin your gear with moisture at the same time!!!
english sexy movies
english sexy movies
not even talking about miku how can you
Your right, I should have thrown her in the mix nathaniel beaumont , she deserves it.
Holograms were the "future" in the 1980s. And non of this video was actually holography. All you are doing is bastardising the definition of "hologram", so thanks for that. Now it's 7 years since this video was made, which is technically "the future" from the perspective of the video, and I see no sign that holograms (or cheap illusions as shown in the video) are in any way significant now. This video is just bad in every way.
All valid points, please share any videos that show interesting holographic technology. At the time, I was just trying to create the illusion of holograms using inexpensive techniques.
