    Thanks for putting this up. I’ve had my granddads series 2 in a box in pieces for years because I couldn’t figure out how to reassemble it. Even the original instructions didn’t really help. Got it back together in a 20 minutes watching your video.

      Once you get the hang of it, this handgun isn’t terribly difficult to disassemble. No question, there are definitely easier models to clean. I can’t imagine an easier model than the Ruger Mark IV. But, if you like the grip angle on the Colt, there aren’t many comparable models… High Standard made a few. Ruger makes the Mark series. Thank you for the great detail in your video and the differences in the three Woodsman series. I have two series 2. One is a short barrel, and the other a long barrel. I was able to disassemble the short barrel with no issues thanks to your video. When I went to disassemble the long barrel, I noticed that there is no push button (assembly lock plunger?) and when I locked the slide back and turned it over, there is no recoil spring retaining plate (assembly lock?). I'm at a loss as to why the parts aren't there. These pistols have been in the family since the fifties, and I don't remember ever totally disassembling them. I hesitate to attempt disassembly for fear of damaging the firearm, or even whether I can disassemble without these parts. The pistol fires fine without these parts, so I'm not sure what to do. I have found these parts on line at Numrich and have them on order. Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated.

    • @ltmclearen
      @ltmclearen  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching. Actually, I don’t think you have anything to fear. Obviously you’re not going to be able to retain the recoil spring when you remove the slide. Remove the handgrips and skip forward to removing the main spring housing. It will be more difficult to remove, but it’s still very doable. Then remove the slide. You will need to remove the recoil spring and guide rod to install the button and lock. Look for damage to the slide where the lock slides into place. Installing the button and lock can be tricky. Install the button from the bottom aligning the tab with the length of the slide. The tab on my button was offset (I put the offset toward the outside of the slide). You’ll need to get two tools into the bottom of the slide at the same time. I used a flathead screwdriver and a bent paper clip. Push the lock “backwards” with the screwdriver and “sideways” with the other tool until it all “snaps” into place over the button. Check that the lock is securely in its channel at the back of the slide. I think the hardest part will be returning the recoil spring to its correct assembly position. See video at ~ 8:14. Let me know how it turns out.

      @@ltmclearen I received the parts today and proceeded to remove the mainspring housing retaining pin. There is no pin or hole for the pin in that location, so I'm not sure what makes this gun unique. I really did check several times to make sure. All the other pin and hole locations shown in your video are present. The mainspring housing does push in about 1/16 inch when pressed in at the top, then springs back flush with the butt. The serial number is 10917-S, which puts the manufacture date at 1948-49, if that helps. It has target sights just like the ones in your video, and all the other aspects appear exactly the same, except the length of the barrel. I hate to throw this head scratcher at you. I hope you can shed some light on this one. Thanks, Don.

    thanks for the video Will! I could not reasemble mine without your detailed effort at the intricacies of this wonderful gun. I just had mine handed down to me from a relative. It hadn't been shot for decades and the finish is poor. But it shot the center of the target on the first round! Since it's got a lot of nicks and corosion, I might as well use it and hand it down to my son. I assume I will eventually need to break down the firing pin. I'd love to see a full dissassembly video also if you have time some day. And also; how often does it need the cleaning described in this videa?
    (how many rounds? or every use?)

    If you can tell me and others what company manufactures the magazine your series 2 colt pistol is presently using? It is slightly different than the original Colt supplied, factory magazine. I looks rather high quality and well made.

    • @ltmclearen
      @ltmclearen  Рік тому

      Actually, the magazine in the video is an authentic Colt magazine. Colt made several magazines that were slightly different over the years. I think one of the biggest differences was the thumb button. A Beretta U22 Neos magazine can be modified fairly easily to work with your Colt Woodsman series 2. I have modified several, but they aren't the same quality as the original Colt.

    Don’t pull the trigger to drop the hammer unless you want to reset the recoil spring in order to reassemble the firearm.

    • @ltmclearen
      @ltmclearen  6 місяців тому

      John, Thanks for watching. I'm not sure what you mean... The recoil spring is completely independent of the trigger and the hammer. Pulling the trigger neither releases the recoil spring catch, nor does it cause the slide to recoil and release the catch. See video at 5:45 when I drop the hammer with the recoil spring captured and demonstrate that the recoil spring is not released. When I pulled the trigger to drop the hammer at 14:33, the main spring is not installed. So dropping the hammer does not cause a violent collision between the hammer and the firing pin/slide that might dislodge the catch. In either case, pulling the trigger does not release the recoil spring, although when disassembling you may want to check... Please reach out to me at will.mclearen@gmail.com if you think there is an error in the video. I'll be happy to discuss.

      @@ltmclearen Thank-you. I'd bought an apparently 1949 Series II for my wife. Serial number - if I recall correctly - was followed by an "S". Some say this would be a Series III...but the magazine release is near the trigger guard and the line of the heel is parallel to the bore axis. I just did a field strip after she put about 150 rounds through it. I had cleaned the barrel before and figured out how to field strip it before we went to the range. You're video is saved and used! Next, I'd like to go deeper and examine/maintain the firing pin and components of the slide. This piece of machinery is quite beautiful and something to be appreciated.

    • @ltmclearen
      @ltmclearen  Рік тому +1

      Johnny, sorry to hear you're having trouble. I've tried several things, but can't seem to replicate your predicament. With the main spring housing and sear spring removed, are you able to remove the slide assembly? If so, is the recoil spring properly captured?

    • @1945jlee
      @1945jlee Рік тому

      Will, yes the slide comes off after removing the main spring housing. The recoil spring is properly installed. After thinking long and hard about it, I remember the new main spring was shorter and smaller (the spring would not go over the lower cap stud(?) and the coils were very close together. With the slide removed and the MSH was reinstalled, the hammer would only go back a small amount. It is like the spring is bottomed out and acts like a solid rod? I will remove the new spring and reinstall the old one shortly. Thank you in advance for your reply...

    • @ltmclearen
      @ltmclearen  Рік тому +1

      Your description of the new main spring sounds like it is most likely the culprit. I was going to recommend checking for interference between the back of the slide (where the hammer strikes the firing pin) and the rear-most portion of the frame. The main spring coupled with the hammer would definitely fit that description.

    • @1945jlee
      @1945jlee Рік тому

      That was it! After switching back to the old spring, everything works. I looked closely at my packing slip from Numrich and lo & behold someone pulled the wrong part... 2004500-D instead of the correct part 2004500--F Anyway I will call them tomorrow and see if they will switch springs with me... My original is really worn. I would really like you to make a video of a 'complete teardown and reassembly on the series 2...(with you, no PHD needed!) I would be interested in if and how you apply oil to the slide and/or the gun itself for protection if you apply a a protective wax. I have a series 2 Match Target I am interested in maintaining it correctly.

    • @ltmclearen
      @ltmclearen  2 роки тому

      Keith, I'll be honest, the question you ask is out of my area of expertise. Most of my experience with firearms I learned during my 25 years in the Marine Corps where everything got a 'light coat of CLP'... Personally, I wipe the internal surfaces of the bolt/slide assembly and the slide rail with a lightly oiled cloth, and then wipe it clean with another cloth. .22's tend to be dirty, so I clean mine routinely. I try to keep dirt, oils and salts from my hands off the metal. I'm sure there are arguments for and against wax, but I can't speak to how effective it is from personal experience. Thanks for commenting.

    • @ltmclearen

      I did, and you're right. A flathead screwdriver is going to be hardened in order to perform its designed task. If using a screwdriver, you might find it easier to try a rotary tool and cutting disk.
