    Fun fact : From what I heard all this cameos in Superman Animated series were actually intended to build up the justice league in the series finale. The creators even had planned for Wonder Woman to have a cameo in a episode as well, but because KidsWB was against the idea, since they wanted their shows to have more younger heroes (like Batman beyond and static shock) the idea wasn't made. Only later the creators were able to do it in the amazing Justice League cartoon.

    This version of Superman is the epitome of "modern Superman" and is way more definitive than Chris Reeve will ever be. Bruce Timm and company based the entirety of the super-cast on the Post-Crisis/John Byrne era of Superman which is the foundation of contemporary comics like New 52 and Rebirth as well as Henry Cavill's Superman on screen. Clark is an actual person and not a bumbling fool who is competent at his job and a great investigator. Superman is earnest yet compassionate and doesn't always know the right thing to do but tries his hardest to do so. He even has doubts about being Superman at all. Lois is hard charging and not a damsel to be rescued, Jimmy is an actual contemporary teenager and not a gee-golly goober, and Lex is not just a crazy mad scientist or obsessed with real estate but a business mogul thats fearsome, cunning, manipulative, and a genius, and who owns half of Metropolis. This is Superman way more than anything before it and everything after is just building on this foundation.

    • @weirdwest1702
      @weirdwest1702 4 роки тому +24

      They're both definitive. Or more appropriately, they're both milestones in the evolution of the character.
      Sure, Reeve's Kent was a bumbling dweeb, and real estate swindler Luthor fell short, but the Krypton sequence, Smallville, and the Daily Planet scenes, combined with Reeve's commanding yet compassionate Superman, were taking the character and his world seriously in a way that wasn't being done in the comics at the time, and became a springboard for the tone delivered by John Byrne in the 80s.

    • @roccoborghetti4693
      @roccoborghetti4693 4 роки тому +4

      @@weirdwest1702 that’s just not true. The character like the rest of DC were being taken way more seriously in comics throughout all of the 1970s way before the movie. It was precisely Reeve’s Superman that started to hold back the character’s progression in popular media for the next 40 some odd years.

    • @weirdwest1702
      @weirdwest1702 4 роки тому +11

      @@roccoborghetti4693 No, it is true. Certainly the bronze age comics had already taken strides to differentiate from the often garish silver age, the Reeve film was first to trim the fat and lend a sophisticated take on Superman's origins.
      Before Byrne, Donner's film first gave us a cold alien Krypton, far removed from the Buck Rogers pastiche that was still Superman's origin in the comics. Superboy was gone, and the idea that the 'S' was the crest of the House of El is introduced. It is the first time Smallville is placed in Kansas. And Christopher Reeve's performance had a massive impact on writers and artists subsequent to his films- including John Byrne.
      So, I stand by my assessment that both Donner's film and TAS are crucial markers in getting us to modern Superman, and neither is more definitive than the other.

    Not enough people talk about this PHEONIMAL show! Feel like it often overshadowed by BTAS when it genuinely on par with it. Like BTAS, as Super Frame says, it portrays the PERFECT versions of these characters, and never reaches lows as low as some media today. But Darkseid! DARKSEID! EVERY episode with him is MASTERFUL, and they always make it so that he never really looses, like in Season 2 when he is forced to leave Earth, but inevitably gets the last laugh. They establish a great dynamic between him and Superman which gets even COOLER in JL. And all the crossovers, especially with Batman, were AMAZING! In a way, though BTAS is better at more psychological, character-driven arcs, STAS feels more EPIC in scale (e.g. Season 2 and 3 finales). MUST WATCH FOR ANY SUPERHERO FAN!

    Superman the animated series to me is one of the best shows in DCAU which is the holy grail to me and I’m glad you reviewed it. Although I disagree when you said some episodes were bland, like in prototype, Prometheus and Superman’s Pal. In prototype, I thought it was kind of important because that was the first time we saw John Henry Irons who we later see as steel in another Superman episode. Same thing with General Hardcastle in Prometheus, the xenophobic general, because we saw him and superman the animated series finale and in justice league unlimited wearing green arrow, Supergirl and the question came to ask about these visions Supergirl was having which later led to something big in the season one finale of justice league unlimited. And superman‘s pal I think establishes Superman and Jimmy’s friendship the same way I saw some of the comic book panels to Superman super origins dead in one of your videos how to make a good superman movie. That’s how it was important to me in my opinion.
    By the way, great work on that how to make good or bad DC superhero movies. I’m trying to come up with my own movie franchise and you’re coming up with things that never even occurred to me. It’s giving me a lot of great ideas and I thank you a lot for that. Keep up the good work. 👍🏼

    Okay, I think I actually will give this Superman another shot.
    Personally, JLU Superman is the reason why I've been so lukewarm as the character growing up. I understand the writing decisions were intentional with the slippery slope and the incidental Worf Effect that made him seem like his bark was bigger than his bite. Giving me the impression he had a big ego that needed to be humbled from time to time.
    I am not a Superman fan, but I want to be. I love the boyscout archetype of characters, especially in Superheroes. Superman is the posterboy for this stuff, but...

    I rewatched Justice League first and then the Superman series and they both honestly feel like two completely different shows. Justice League is much more grander in terms of art style, feels more epic, is a lot more action focused, and featured more characters on screen at once. Singular character development and heroism took more of a backseat. In STAS, the show is lighter toned, and Superman actually performs heroic acts rescuing everyday people that aren't just a byproduct of a battle. I liked Superman in STAS more than in the Justice League, but I didn't like how much of a punching bag they made Superman in STAS. He gets smacked around like nobody's business even though he could body most of his enemies in one hit.

Now! Part Two, in which a real cantor listed in the credits sings the Mourner's Kaddish. Turpin's sacrifice was such a great moment, as it reminds us the real heroes in this world are the ordinary people willing to lay down their lives to protect others. • @MrGittz
      @MrGittz 3 роки тому +1

      @@maxalain9948 Honestly? I think they’ve yet to truly capture a definitive Superman in Live Action. I don’t know why Hollywood has such a problem adapting the character. If Marvel can absolutely nail Captain America, DC/WB should be able to get Superman right. This animated series is easily the best version of the character. I wish DC/WB would just hire Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett & Paul Dini to run their cinematic universe.
      Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Snyder’s take, but it’s not *my* ideal version of Superman. Superman should be almost exactly like how Marvel did Cap. Earnest, charismatic, old fashioned, a moral compass & yes, even a little corny. Being Superman shouldn’t constantly feel like a burden, he’s not Peter Parker.
      The Christopher Reeve films lean a little too heavily in the “camp”. Had the films maintained the tone of the first 30-40 minutes of Donner’s first Superman? Ok now we’re talking. But as soon as Metropolis is introduced & we get Gene Hackman’s goofy Luthor...the films falls apart. Plus the less said about the “Can You Read My Mind” sequence the better. What were they thinking!?!
      I know people adore Christopher Reeve’s portrayal as Superman but like with any comic book character, getting the alter ego right is just as important, and Reeve’s bumbling, awkward Clark is just...not my favourite.

      Starwars is doing something similar Dave faloni knows the animation and john farrow knows the live action a great team.

Audiences just weren’t sold because DC tried to rush their movie series out into this big extended universe.
