Before I pitch too you guys my own Superman movie I thought it'd be appropriate to revisit the other superman movies (specifically the latest incarnation) to deconstruct that superman and see if we can make a superman more inline with how he should be represented. Excited to see what you guys would do with a superman movie !!
So would your live action Superman wear the trunks? Does Superman and even Batman need them? If they’re here to stay DC should really embrace them, if not then make them modern
the biggest problem why henry's superman was so bad and MOS was garbage was cuz the protagonist superman doesn't even have a character or any personalities or character development at all .hes just a boring badass a bland prop with the look .he deserved better 🤦♂️. u are video is well done🔥
If you looking for inspiration for your Superman pitch, I recommend you to check Superman & Lois TV series, specially the flashbacks from episode 11. It's one the best adaptations of Superman (alongside DCAU and Superman vs The Elite) and a exemple of how to adapt the hero in the modern days without sacrificing what makes him likable and appealing.
One good scene that could be in your Superman movie is Lex Luthor trying to buy Superman by opening a brief case full of money. Superman looks at the money and then at Lex who gives a him a smile, but Superman closes the brief case and says “no.”
Zack: you're living in f@#%ing dream world. Superman: good, dreams save us. dreams lift us up and transform us into something better. and on my soul, I swear that until my dream of a where dignity, honor and justice are the reality we all share. I'll never stop fighting, ever.
But look how many people complain about how he has power that he was born with and can do things that others cannot which in their mind makes him boring. Even the Russo brother slaundered the character and the whole of dc by claiming superman and dc heroes can't work in cinema because they are just all powerful and therefore boring, but they were quick to glorify batman, pretty much the only character in dc everyone in warner bros respects and is quick to make heroes villians so batman can get by.
@@warlord8106 uh the lesson for superman is no matter how powerful he is he can’t save everyone, he learned this core lesson is when Pa Kent die from heart attack and there’s nothing he can do about it
In order to make an intriguing Superman movie, they should focus more on the characterization of Clark Kent. Just like the Captain America trilogy. People see him as the ww2 hero, the legendary Captain America, as seen by his interaction with others. But at the end of the day, Cap sees himself as Steve Rogers, the skinny kid from Brooklyn.
I was never a Captain America fan and didn't know how they would pull it off in film, but what I enjoyed about Cap in the MCU films was I felt like I was watching Superman. Cap wondering what American had become and wanting to give hope for others to be better. A lot of the first Thor film and Cap felt like what Superman is.
They need to focus on Clark's relationship with his parents. And on the good parenting that he receives. And the quiet and happy life that he lives in Kansas. What makes Superman iconic is the fact that he represents the good part of America. His motivation should be the love he feels for people. Clark should be a loveable and kind hearted man. He should have a warm smile and be almost naive in his view of the world. When he moves to Metropolis, he should feel shocked at the lack of empathy people in the big city have. The movie should focus more on his struggle to connect with the people of Metropolis because they have become cynical about others who say they want to help.
I have this image in my head that always pops up for what I would think would be a great intro for a Superman movie. Imagine Superman in a small town playing baseball with some kids on the street. He's being casual, he and the kids are joking, and minor curses are being thrown around. Something akin to The Sandlot for example. We see the scene take place from a kid's camera, as he's recording from a distance. So a pov shot. Supes is being cheeky as the team he's on is winning with the help of his powers. This goes on for maybe 3 minutes, until we pan from the pov shot to a normal cinematic movie setting. Supes hears something in the distance that needs his attention, and he flies away. That's how I'd start a Superman movie. Thanks for reading.
I am upset with myself for not thinking of something like that but if you would indulge me, I would like to share my Superman opening. I think mine would be for the Superman II film that follows your own. First, we officially put Metropolis on a map, it is in Virginia just outside of D.C. The first several minutes are setting up minor emergencies across the country. A surfer is knocked off his board in Hawaii, hitting his head on a reef and falling unconscious under the water, a child lost in the woods in Washington state, and a family struggling with a cow giving birth on their farm in Iowa. But the biggest emergency is in Metropolis, as a bank is being robbed. Three men with guns fire at a line of police cars to cover their getaway. In Hawaii, we see a crowd of fifty people surrounding the young man brought back to the beach where CPR was successfully performed. They're looking up to the sky, crying out their thanks. The three men split up in the back alleys, the youngest of them making a wrong turn and running head first into the crowded side walks. The little girl lost in the woods is absolutely bawling her eyes out, crying for her mommy. A voice calmly says, "Everything is going to be all right." She looks up and stops crying, a smile missing two front teeth spreads cheek to cheek across her face. The young man with the gun knocks several people over as he runs, hearing several police officers on foot chase him down. Out of sheer desperation, he grabs an older woman by the waist and yanks her into a corner store, knocking her grandchild over. In Iowa, the calf that was just born is not breathing, its mom panicking and the young, inexperienced farmer is as well. Another hand grabs his own and places it on the calf's chest, the same voice telling him "calm down, she's depending on you. Let me help." The young man pulls the old woman into the back of the corner store, ordering everyone else out. With a gun to her head, he threatens the police. Absolute chaos is spreading across the crowd. "Look! Up in the sky!" The very first shot of Superman in this film is him floating down to land in front of the corner store. The police and first responders clear a path for the man of steel to enter. The old woman's grandchild is pointing at the store, crying, trying to explain to Superman what's wrong but is on the verge of hyperventilating. "He's-! He's-! He's-! He's-!" Superman takes off his cape and wraps it around the kid's shoulders. Kneeling down to eye level, he ruffles the kid's hair and says, "Everything is going to be all right. I promise." He enters the corner store. "Back off! I'll do it! I swear!" "If I wanted to hurt you I can. I can move faster than the bullet in that gun, but I'll break every bone in your body. I can use heat vision to burn it to slag but you'll lose that hand. But I do. not. want to. hurt you." "... What are you gonna do?" "Ask you to put the gun down, let her go, and turn yourself in." "They'll lock me up!" "Yes, but you hurt that woman and you'll never be a free man again. I'll make sure you go to prison for the rest of your life. You end this nonsense here and now, a jury will look at you better, you will have a chance to get out. You're not a killer, yes you will be punished but you are no murderer. It is never too late to do the right thing." "..." The old woman squirms to be heard. "My name is Evelin, now my grandbaby is waiting for me. His name is Miles. What's yours?" "... Raymond." "You have a grandma too, everyone does. What is she going to think if she hears that her baby boy is a killer on tonight's evening news?" Superman whispers, "It will break her heart." The young man begins to cry. He hands the gun to Superman and allows the police to take him into custody. Miles hands the cape back to Superman, he and Evelin hug the man of steel as the crowd erupts in cheering. Title card
Honestly absolutely amazing parallel with Zack Snyder and Manchester Black “dream world” lines! Good on you for seeing that connecting and making it very clear through editing. Just super spot on.
@Erik Kemeey it was depressing not a single moment was shown Superman is optimistic the entire movie (if you paid attention) was implying Superman is being forced to be Superman like he doesn't want to save people but just obligated to because he has powers he never showed any sign of actually wanting to help the people from within him, he just started to help people when Zod forced him to and he sucked at doing so and lastly the ending never showed any optimism at all lmao from beginning to the end it was all sadness like there's no "hope"
One thing I am sick of is superman’s farther constantly dying as part of his origin. It’s not essential he’s not Batman. He’s not defined by trauma, it’s not about how they died. It’s about how they lived.
Batman isn't defined by trauma either, he's defined by feeling obligated to save Gotham in incredibly romantic fashion, despite the sad loneliness it brings him, because he feels it's what his parents would want him to be. Remember his father was a doctor and his mother was a charity worker. As batman he saves Gotham from the evils of crime, the evil that took his parents.
@@FreakyTeeth yes but I’m reality his parents wouldn’t want him to it’s what he thinks his parents would want in truth his parents would want him to be happy. So yeh he is if he wasn’t traumatised by watching his parents shot in front of him as a child he wouldn’t be Batman
@Will N yeh but there’s loads of interpretations like that that r different like in Tom Kings batman when booster gold goes back and prevents the murder of Bruce’s parents Bruce Wayne does not become batman at all….
@@FreakyTeethBruce would have been raised as an honest man, but he wouldn't have been Batman at all. Batman exists because of the death of his parents. You took that, Batman doesn't exist
I don't know why people don't get that Superman isn't that complex of a character, he's just a good wholesome boy that loves to help and cares about humanity, how is that hard to understand?
Except that’s not true. He *is* a pretty layered character. The issue is the constant insistence that he isn’t and that this needs to be fixed (even though he already is)
He's complex but he doesn't scream it in your face like we are use to with Batman, which is all about his traumas and troubles with it's great and Batman its great but, Superman doesn't need to be a Batman
This is why I think Superman and Lois is the best of both worlds. It still has the modern drama and has the character struggle as though he's not invincible but it still accurately portrays his optimism and heroism that he should be known for.
The more this shit keeps going, the more I realize we don't deserve that show It's incredibly obscure for a DC series just because it's part of the CW, most people don't wanna give it a chance despite how brilliant it is
It still amuses me Zack Snyder said the thing about living in a dream world- and one of the most iconic and revered Superman stories of the modern age literally has the character making a SPEECH ABOUT THE GOODNESS OF DREAMS. You cannot misunderstand a character more than that.
I think you misunderstand why Snyder said you live in a dream world. Someone was asking him during a charity pannel why batman and superman kill. Snyder could have explained his point better, but I think he is still right in saying that you are living in a dream world expecting Superman and Batman to be portrayed as heros who do nothing wrong. Which is most superman and Batman fans expecting these heros to always be right and do nothing wrong. I would recommend you watch that charity pannel to understand the context.
@@kartikadewi3270 No, they literally shouldn't because by that logic Spider-man should also be killing, or Luke Skywalker should have killed Ben in hi- - - Oh... See what I mean? It's literal character assassination if they start doing the things that they dreaded in the first place... Again look at the last Jedi for reference
I love how Zach and Manchester Black said basicly the same thing "You live in a dream world" about us believing in superheroes not killing, upholding their rules, in people being able to be better and changing, in believing in a better world....and this guy was left to do Superman.
@@autobotproductions1244 I'm sorry but the Snyderverse feels less of a corporate IP and more of a one-man's vision project. At the end of the day, I just wonder what the snyderverse could have been. The reason why people watch dc is because they are NOT Marvel.
I totally agree. I hated how Clark's father would not let his son save him. It made no sense at all and that was the tip of the iceberg that was wrong with the Man of Steel movie
"The heroes behind Superman were Jonathan and Martha Kent". This is the centerpoint of Superman. Its the reason why dark/evil Superman stories fall short. Its the reason why the TV show Smallville was so beloved. Superman is good because he had good parents that centered and grounded him, and raised him with compassion and love.
I think what is just as important in Superman is not just getting Clark right. But making Metropolis feel like a character. This fantasy-esque city of the future making it feel grounded and realistic, similar to what the new Batman film does for Gotham . I want believe that Metropolis can exist. That Metropolis is the best of us.
@@Condor2481 Maybe give it the image of a utopia but have the idea that there is something sinister within the city. I can see something like STAS Metropolis with blue skies and skyscrapers, but having Luther looking down on the city with “2/3 of the population working for me even if they don’t know it”.
Not me thinking about how in the real world the Daily Planet building couldn't exist nowadays because every building has to be Neutral for Real Estate Purposes and a building with a giant planet branded with the name of another business would be hard to sell when print sales decline and the paper needs to downsize.
What I hate the most about Snyder’s superman is that he has a less screentime in BVS (You know, a movie that he’s a protagonist and a titular character) than Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. That’s the amount of respect Snyder gave to this character.
@@Knoispowr BvS shouldn’t have been the next movie in line after MoS. They killed him off before he even got a chance to settle into his role. Such a waste.
The guy even had the ghall to kill of Jimmy Olsen in the opening sequence of the film, you know, Clark Kents best friend? They didn't even name drop him in the theatrical cut. And if you had any doubts that Zack Snyder has no respect for Superman and his supporting cast don't worry, he pointlessly kills off Mercy Graves by the midpoint of the film as well.
More people need to see this videoI'm sick of people justifying Snyder's butchering of Superman as "realistic" and "mature" seriously is it so unrealistic for a person to do good with his abilities simply because he wants too?
#RealismInSuperHeroStoriesDoesNotFreakingMatterAtAll (If I wanted to see everyday reality for the 10 car pile up shitfest it really is, I'll go outside or put on the local 10 O'Clock News).
Spot on. It's reassuring to see videos like this that show that there are still people out there who still understand Superman. Can't wait for the follow-up video.
Admittedly when I was young I use to neglect the character, although I still acknowledged the character's presence, I was mainly into popular characters like Spiderman or Batman (even though I still love those characters a lot). But after years of reading comics and watching shows and films as a teenager, I then began to understand what the character truly means to the world. Superman has quickly become my favourite superhero, as the character constantly reminds me the what it means to be good and the simple reason to be good, simply because it's right. The character has taught me that we have to keep on going, we have to persevere in the midst of the struggles and challenges of life, even now with my current depression an social anxiety, I still keep on going because I know that deep down there will be a better tomorrow. Its easy to have a cynical mindset in life and understandable, but whats truly a challenge is having hopeful and optimistic mindset, but worth it to help others and better ourselves simply because it right. I truly love the character of Superman so much and have been a little disappointed with how the character has been handled in the DCEU, even though Henry Cavill could've been a fantastic Superman, as he truly loves and understands the character as proven by his interviews and even would've rather preferred to depict the character to be more hopeful and optimistic. I am actually currently writing up scripts for my own take on the DCEU with castings, themes and plots based on countless films, shows, animation and comics and my own ideas. I deeply believe @SUPER_FRAME and myself share a similar idea of wgat makes for a good Superman film/trilogy, and much like him I have been inspired to one day make pitch videos for my own take on the DCEU and have written up ideas for a Superman trilogy, a Flash film, a Green Lantern franchise and so many more etc... At the end of the day, I thoroughly believe that now more than ever, that *the world will always need Superman!*

Zack Snyder never really understood Superman. Supes is the Big Blue Boy Scout. The light to Batman’s dark. What has always struck me is the difference between the battle scene in Man of Steel as opposed to the equivalent scene in Superman II. In the Chris Reeve film, when Superman realizes the destruction that could result from such conflict, he hightails it out of town in order to save lives.

Superman and Lois' Superman/Clark Kent is the version we need and we haven't seen for decades now in live-action before the show's release. The only CW show that I think currently is worth watching. Tyler Hoechlin is great in it as Superman too. My favourite moments are the flashback scenes, where we see this Superman's origin, motives, and personality.
That whole flashback episode is the best exemple of how to make a Superman movie by making a new story while making tribute to what came before. I specially like how that Superman origin isn't about him having to earn people trust and dealing with prejuice and the fact he is a alien, but rather about Clark adapting to his new life in Metropolis and developing romance with Lois, which helps him overcome the break up with Lana (which I love that it's caused by the fact that Clark spend to much time training with Jor-El, showing how his decisions can have consequences)
Thats coz Tyler's been superman for 15 years. MoS superman was Superman for barely 1 week. Snyder had 3 movies planned for Cavill where in the end he would have become the superman y'all rejoice. MoS is the origin story for a superman which no one ever tried to bring into theatres except snyder. If WB didnt bit*h out we would have got MoS3 by now.
This is why I hesitate when people say “Restore the Snyderverse” it’s clear that he’s not interested in making good DC movies, just good Snyder movies. But also Warner Bros do not know at all what they are doing. So the DCEU is kinda just fucked 😂😂
Thank you. Thank you! THANK YOU!!!! 100% Nailed it. So many Snyderbots (like Snyder himself) don't actually like Superman, they just like his god like powers and project their own flawed, self-aggrandizing outlook on to the character for pathetic wish fulfillment, born out of insecurity.
The line “You don’t owe this world anything” could have been great, if they changed a few things. Have it be Lex Luthor saying it, and have Superman’s response be “I know, but it’s the right thing to do.”
Right now Superman is being done justice on the small screen. By Tyler Hoechlin. If the flashpoint movie does change the status quo, I'd love to see Tyler's version of the character appear on screen
“The world will always have dark corners, and black and white comes in thousands of shades of gray, but here are seven people, good and true, come what may. They have the power to enslave the world but work tirelessly to keep it free. They are, in the best sense of the word, childlike. I suppose only a child could buy into such a ridiculous premise. But once it’s in your heart, you can’t help but take that little scrap of magic forward with you.” -Darwyn Cooke
People say Superman is boring because he's "too strong", but love Flash, people say Batman's cool cause he has none, but used to dump on Hawkeye on before the show because he has none. Dunno what geeks want, really
That's what's so frustrating. People WANT to see a good Superman. There are people who WANT to make a good Superman, it's just that WB refuses to do anything with him. Matthew Vaughn and Henry Cavill have expressed interest in doing another Superman movie. Rocksteady and WB Montreal were working on a Superman game each but ended up being turned down for that Suicide Squad game. It's like the only thing people can think of is to make him evil or not do anything at all.
@@DinoDave150 that's true and heck the superman movie that I want is personally about Clark kent and Lois lane raising my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self and teaching him how to be a great hero because that story is super great and would be a great story to see in animation or live action at least in my opinion.

@Dodgson, we've got Dodgson here! I mean he is still starting as a superhero so of course he would doubt himself and besides superman ws kinda wrong in the film
It's pretty crazy when you look at Snyders movies through the Altruism v. Objectivism lens. Take Army of the Dead for instance, a movie Snyder had 100% control over. The script had exactly one Altruistic character, Dave Batista's daughter. Not only did the movie make her out to be the most hate-able character in the movie, her actions directly leads to the deaths of not only her Dad, but the people she tries to save and the Pilot. Every other character starts out selfish, but when they do end up performing a good, altruistic act they get killed moments later. The pilot not leaving, the safe cracker saving the guy who was a jerk to him and the Coyote luring the Alpha away with the head of the Queen are all examples. Hell, even the woman who professes her love fr Drax gets her neck snapped 2 seconds later. Snyder takes the term "no good deed left unpunished" literally. ;)
@@Condor2481 But that's not what he shows. In the movie, outside of the daughter, doing _one_ noble thing _instantly_ kills you and quite often kills innocent bystanders. With the daughter, Snyder takes the one character who noble the entire time and does _everything_ he can to make you hate her even before the mission starts. It's literally Objectivism v. Altruism, a very popular topic for people who, like Snyder, love Ayn Rand. Doing anything for non-selfish ends is wrong. It's like someone read a cut down version of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nation and ignored all context.

Superman is allowed to be OP because he’s a good guy. I’m sick and tired of them making him evil. We get it, he’d be really menacing as a bad guy. Making him evil is basically a trope at this point.
Tbf DC isn’t entirely to blame for that trope. Omni-Man & Homelander were created well before DC pulled the trigger. They just didn’t become popularized til The Boys & Invincible were put on Amazon several years after DC launched the Injustice games. There’s also Brightburn which wasn’t their creation either. DC’s mainly just done it with Injustice & the Knightmare visions in Justice League which I blame Snyder for. I honestly don’t mind Injustice, but they did it way too soon when we barely even had Clark Kent established. That’s an Elseworlds that should be explored like a decade down the line & kept FAR away from the main DCU continuity. I agree that they just need to nail & establish classic Superman first & foremost before there’s even any weight to him falling so far from grace in an alternate universe.
What I want for superman on film is for a great filmmaker on par with Matt reeves to be allowed take control by WB/DC of the superman franchise so we can finally get the definitive take on the character on screen by a writer/director with a knowledge and passion for the character. Scrap the DCEU altogether so we can focus on artful character studies like the batman

Yes he was best suited for dark and warrior type ip like Batman and wonder Woman. Literally in all of his first three dc movies wonder Woman and Batman stood out the most than Superman. Superman two movies upto that point but he was still dull character. Wonder Woman movie had Snyder co writing with patty which turned out to be first critically acclaimed movie in DCEU. Snyder made Batman the fighter we all know and he even made some aspects of things good, but the only big let down with Batman is totally devoid of compassion and humanity of that character. Batman might seems to be less compassionate than other jl members. But, he was totally opposite of the assumption. He can be very easily get heart broken, he feels human emotions more than most.
@Will N I saying Zack is best suited for warrior type characters in general. For example take 300. Superman is not a hardcore warrior, he is a farm boy who has very sense of justice with very good heart. But wonder Woman total identity depends on her being warrior. Batman war on crime depicts him also as a warrior. Hence, wonder Woman and Batman stood most out of Zack Snyder DCEU Trinity and Superman had two movies before Justice League but still other two over shadowed him.
I never could really put my finger on why I disliked Zack Snyder’s interpretation of dc characters so much until I learned he was an Ayn Rand fanatic, then it all just clicked. Taking some of the most renowned icons of hope and selflessness and turning them into nihilistic individualists is probably the worst thing you can do when adapting a superhero, but to do it with THE superhero, Superman? You gotta wonder how he of all people, ended up as the director.
Yesss!! Been waiting for this one, so pumped! Superman creates a fantastic backbone of aspiration and strength in DC, and getting him right is so essential!
First time viewer here. Incredibly impressed with your analysis and fantastic research. I’m glad there’s still people who understands Superman and his ideals.
I love how Snyder fans say that Cavill is the first modern Superman to show struggle and conflict, completely ignoring the fact that Smallville did it already, and better in every way 💀
This video justifies my problems with those newer films as it really never felt like Superman to me. More of those evil superman tropes in other media (i.e Brightburn, Homelander) and it's quite boring to see another darker more "realistic" Superman when he should be the better person not in strength but in morals and help inspire hope, which is why he's my all-time favorite superhero and after seeing this video makes me excited to see your pitch on a Superman movie because I know that you understand what he's supposed to be and that just makes me happy. 💯 agree. Superman is the symbol of hope, he's humanity makes him lovable, he's the ultimate good guy. Whereas Snyderman is a dull, boring and angry-looking imitation of Superman. By adapting that to DCEU they literally ended the idea of teen titans/titans in DCEU. Cyborg should have been first introduced in TITANS movie. Many people thought same thing initially. Superman is an amazing character who really deserves to be done justice on the big screen so the general public can see him for who he is. He isn't some perfect all powerful savior, he's just a dorky guy from Kansas who wants to do the right thing because he knows it's right. Edit: BTW, for the comics you use in the video which comics are they from?
Your points remind me of how HBO max marketed Superman and Lois. The first thing I saw of it besides the announcement was a little IG ad where Superman saved some people and a kid said his outfit was cool. Supes instantly took that moment after thanking the kid to praise his mom saying she made it. It felt so wholesome and it felt like Superman.
I agree that Henry Cavill is more Superman/Clark Kent off screen than on, but I still would love to see him as Superman again. After the Flash movie, they should bring him back as the Superman we know and love.
It's so dismaying that it's almost as though people see someone choosing to be kind and heroic by their own volition as more unrealistic than having superpowers. Like you said, it's becoming uncomfortably common to have superhero media be cynical and 'edgy,' and it leaching into Superman of all characters just feels so baffling. One of Superman's most fundamental aspects is his kindness and care for others. If you strip that back and just turn him into a flying brick, how can you even really call that Superman?
Superman is more relatable than most characters. He goes through the same problems we all do. He has relationships, work, an immigrant story, and strong beliefs. Batman and Spider-Man are not much more relatable just because they’re less powerful. Are you a millionaire with a thousand gadgets that always only has 1 thing on your mind? And it’s not like you are constantly swinging through NYC and fighting evil scientists with powers
Spiderman es more human for me since he actually has problems to para rent, problems talking with Girls and even if saves the People the media is always against him
I agree that Although batman has a tragic backstory we can’t relate to his lavish lifestyle. But Spiderman’s personal life is very down to earth. He’s an orphan living with his auntie and uncle who tragically died, he’s intelligent but broke, he struggles having relationships with girls and the people he loves are constantly suffering the consequences of his actions, and he’s going through all of this as a teenager and yet he tries to do the right thing. Not only is he relatable, he’s a tragic character.
I completely agree with this video! While I do admittedly enjoy Snyder's films, I do agree with how they haven't been the Superman films they should be. However, there's one thing they shouldn't do and it's using Lex, Doomsday, or Zod. We need new villains, someone like Livewire, Metallo, Parasite, Toyman, and more. He has a rich rogue's gallery, yet the films have barely touched up on that! And yes, Superman should be hopeful and optimistic, similar to how Captain America is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Or have him be done like in Superman and Lois, which I don't know if you have seen the show, but that show is basically what I like to see in a new Superman movie! Plus, it's a great show!
Funny enough the original villian for BvS was actually supposed to be Metallo but WB really wanted to rush the two part movie and turn it into one whole movie, hoping it would make 1bill.
This was an amazing video and I agree with most of the things he said. I kinda feel like he went too hard on Synder but he wasn't wrong. I think the best modern interpretation of Superman is from Superman and Lois. If u love Superman watch the show because the core of the character isn't change and the show provides good action and compelling characters.
As dirty as Zack did Clark in his movies I still think his Lex Luthor is worst thing about those movies. He is almost unbearable to watch whenever he's onscreen. Clancy Brown's animated series Lex was the GOAT and should be the reference point for all future adaptations.
Appreciate the video man. Keep it up. This is what Snyder's problem is and is explained well. If you like his movies cool but you can't deny that he doesn't understand the characters he's portraying.
@@thejoker194 I agree to an extent. I understand what Snyder was trying to do with these characters. He's puts a realistic view on them and that's fine but they are still superheroes. You can have moments and situations that real life applies but don't forget who these characters are. Snyder deconstructs Superman but he doesn't have any values he was taught by Jon and Martha. Batman crosses the line and I understand why but Batman no matter how far he gets down he never crosses the line. That's what Snyder missed.
@SUPER FRAME Thank you so much for this. Superman is perhaps my favourite superhero because the character reminds me what it means to be good for the sole reason of being good, purely hopeful, compassionate and optimistic, something we all should apply. Even now the character continues to remind me much like others have to keep on going and despite my social anxiety and depression, I still try to keep on going and appreciate the world and the people in it and with my friends and family. Henry Cavill certainly could've been an amazing Superman, what's even more baffling is how well he understands the character, stating how much he loves the character, how much he understands what the character has shown to us and taught us, loving the humble nature and optimism the character embodies and would have preferred to have taken in his own ideas. BTW I was wondering if you had any tips about creating videos and editing similar to you as I hopefully want to pitch hypothetical DC films I would create, including a Superman (although seems like you have already perfected that in your pitch). I actually have been working on a Green Lantern franchise pitch with a cast, plot, and themes and was wondering if you had any advice?
Yeah honestly destroying the truck was a very small part of Man of Steel but he full on destroyed that man’s livelihood Even him just steeling peoples clothes is not something he would or should do
Its the little details such as this that show what kind of Superman Zack Snyder was directing. I think it actually would've been more fitting if he was able to simply just stand his ground against the guy in the bar scene and not give in to rage at the end by destroying his truck, or even instead of taking someone's clothes, I think it would have been nice if he politely asked the person on their door to kindly borrow some clothes, showing how humble and earnest he is towards others in just one small scene.
The truck scene shows that superman is human that he feels angry. That's a more than powerful scene, besides the trucker deserved it he was a mean guy.
The truck scene is one of the worst superman moments .superman is a very wise person .he would never take petty revenge like that .and the bully learned nothing .clowns will praise garbage
@@herloss448 So any other scene in which superman does not express wisdom is bad? In every superman movie, cartoon, comic he does make a decision which we know he shouldn't have made.
i honestly hate Snyder's superman just a complete lack of hope and optimism he has no moral code or ideology to speak of its why he is such a weak underdeveloped character after 3 movie appearances you don't get the sense that he cares about humanity there has been zero accountability from him personally about the destruction from MOS people were swearing up and down that it would be a character arc for superman where he realizes he need to be more careful when fighting and protect the civilians and this arc never happens and he is just as wreckless in BVS
The fact that Ant Man of all characters managed to get a modern day live action trilogy complete before the practical godfather of the superhero archetype really goes to show how much WB dropped the ball with Superman in recent years, all for the sake of trying to “deconstruct” his character.
Man, I never heard a critique of Snyder's Superman or his films in general, done so well. They are empty and you give great context here. Perfect point and editing of the cartoon "dream world" and Zach's nihilist outlook. Jeez.
1) Hire a guy who virtually verbatim quoted the Manchester Black monologue from What's so funny about truth justice and the american way to direct 2) sit back and watch
I love Man of Steel, but I have to admit you make great points. Superman is suppose to be good for the sake of good for the most part. A character that is suppose to show us that not everyone has an agenda or self interest in mind. Great video 👏
I hate the idea of the uncaring Superman so much. Like, his whole thing is that he's empathy incarnate and almost, but not quite, omnipotent. All he wants out of life is to make sure that everyone, everywhere, is safe and happy. His conflict is that it's an impossible desire, no matter how strong or fast you are. But, like the caring social worker or the person trying to unionize their Amazon warehouse, you do what you can, even knowing that winning is unlikely.
One other thing that bothers me about Superman is the relationship with Lois Lane. It doesn't make sense for him have a relationship in all of his movies because they have very little in common. And that's why I have a soft spot in Superman III. I admire Richard Pryor taking up a fraction of the story, the allegory behind Red Kryptonite and how it changes both Superman and Clark Kent and even my favorite part of the movie being the exchange between Lana Lane and Sups
I sadly agree. While Margot Kidder does a fine job capturing Lois stubborness and risk taken attitude her love for Superman comes more because it was the rule for love interest back then. For modern takes, I think they should taken inspiration from Superman& Lois version. She capture Lois personally but the series shows how she doesn't become obsess for Superman. Instead she was the only Daily Planet reporter who was more interest in dealing with the social problems in Metropolis rather than writting about the Man Steel. It's this interest in helping people that cause Clark to fall in love for her and Lois, after seeing Clark genuinie wants to help her, develop feelings for him as well.
Smallville’s version was also good as Clark and Lois were friends for a few years before he became the blur, and then she knew his secret before he became Superman.
I’m convinced that the version of Superman Zack Snyder wanted to make was Hernan Guerra from Bruce Tim’s Justice League Gods and Monsters. Hernan is basically Clark’s polar opposite and he shares a lot of the qualities Snyder’s Superman seems to have.
This whole thing makes me think of a small scene from Justice League Vs. The Fatal Five. Batman sees in the future a statue of himself in an almost godly sorta fashion with the gold and whatnot, and all he says is "Definitely not my style". That's Superman when he sees himself in modern movies and the New 52
For me, it all went downhill with BvS with this Superman. With Man of steel, even if I consider it pretty meh, you could kinda see where Snyder was going with it, even if the execution was pretty pretentious but at least there was something akin to what many consider “the road to becoming the Superman we know and love” (“I grew up in Kansas, general”) but then BvS backtracked on all of that. Whereas MoS left Clark with a renewed sense of hope and good will, now is turned into unexplained grittiness and undeserving misery and brutality. Example, supposedly Clark killing Zod was a lesson for him, to vow not to kill again and him becoming more of a pacifist, and if that’s so, why on earth his first appearance in BvS is him killing a normal human being by crashing through what seemed like a dozen walls? Where did his character development go? And as you rightly say in the video, why on earth does he even bother helping people if every time he does it he’s miserable? Some try to call this making Supes human but, no, moping and being sad all the time isn’t human, it’s just what someone trying to be edgy would think it’s human. Hell, making Clark just look on in silence while a freaking bomb blows up around him is the most inhumane thing he has done! And as others have pointed out, this version of Superman barely even speaks so how in the world is he relatable in any level? How does the in-universe society see him as a hero when he constantly behaves like he could not give a damn? I don’t know, I’ve never been a fan of this version of Superman and whatever promise the ending of MoS retained was stained by BvS and Snyder’s JL (where, mind you, Snyder can’t even decide whether he wants to make him the hero of the day or a doomsday clock). I agree with your points in Snyder’s direction. He’s a guy of action and style over substance, not of introspection and philosophy, and yet that’s exactly what he tries to do with his movies and, well, he simply doesn’t achieve it. It looks good, not gonna deny it, but looking good doesn’t make a movie good. Sure, they use the most grandiloquent dialogue to make everything seem big and important but none of it matters when the moment of truth comes. Example, Batman sparing Clark. Yes, we all get it, he doesn’t kill him cause he begins seeing himself as they guy who killed his mother, the scene makes it crystal clear what it’s about, the problem? That in the next scene Batman keeps killing people left and right without a care in the world! Hell, the only thing suggesting change is a speech that’s so damn standard and cliché it could have been written by anyone. But, as you say, Snyder sees killing as cool and he’ll compromise story and character for a cool visual. Another, Flash saving Iris in JL, cool scene but, what purpose does it serve? Iris doesn’t ever appear again and his powers are explained later on so, why is the scene here? Why is Iris so calm when she’s about to fucking die? Why does the truck have to blow up and why doesn’t the Flash tries saving the driver? Again, none of this questions matter to Snyder cause the scene looks cool and that’s all that matters. This wouldn’t be a problem but given how pretentious Snyder makes his films with social commentary and religious metaphors and other bullshit, his mantra of doing films “for the real world” becomes an empty promise.
"MoS left Clark with a renewed sense of hope and good will, now is turned into unexplained grittiness and undeserving misery and brutality" wrong. BvS saw superman face controversy in the public eye. He was criticized for existing, blamed for things he didn't or couldn't do, and feared because of what he could do. Every action he took was viewed as "political" which was explicitly stated in the movie. Superman was stressed because of all the toll this public disdain created. This is nothing new, earth 1, what's wrong truth justice and the American way, red son and even the animated series put superman in this position several times. "Clark killing zod was a lesson for him to vow not to kill again" that's your headcanon and was never stated or implied in MoS. Superman doesn't need to have a "vow" not to kill because he's a normal person. Normal people do not need such a vow they just know it's wrong. Snyders superman much like comic superman will kill only if it's necessary. In Canon he's only killed zod and doomsday, people he's also killed in the comics. He didn't kill the terrorist, he just put him in the hospital. "Moping and being sad all the time isn't human" I'm sorry what magical fantasy unicorn land do you live in? Many people go about their daily lives sad do you know what that's called? DEPRESSION. And unless it's chronic there is always a reason behind it. In supermans case it's humanity being critical of him. How would you feel if every action you took in your life was misrepresented, misunderstood and criticized? Also I love how you leave out the part where he OVERCOMES those negative emotions and sacrifices his life for humanity. His mood is also better in his next movie. Do you know what that's called? A character arc. Stop ignoring half an arc to further your narrative. At best its ignorance on your part at worst intellectual dishonesty. "Clark just looks on in silence while a bomb blows up around him" Clark's face is clearly sad. He felt guilty he couldn't stop it. Why is silence a problem? Is there a set standard for how people should react to traumatic events? "This superman barely even speaks...." this isn't a valid criticism. The only time this actually holds true is his confrontation with batman where his lines were contrived to start a fight "That in the next scene batman keeps killing people left and right without care" wrong interpretation of his arc. Batman spared superman, he realized he was going to kill someone innocent and stopped. That didn't change how he fought crime that just changed how he viewed himself and superman. He goes on a frenzie to save Martha, he's desperate to save a parent. It's only after supermans death that he proclaims, "men are still good" which is when he completely changes the way he fights crime. This is shown in the next movie, suicide squad where he not only tries to peacefully arrest dead shot and reason with him, but he also tries to SAVE JOKER AND HARLEY FROM DROWNING. BvS batman would have never did something like that. Supermans death caused batman to want to honor his memory by viewing humanity as "good" or "redeemable" and that extends to villians. "Why is iris so calm when she's about to die?"I love how you say the scene doesn't matter yet you ask questions that don't matter. But to answer, she's calm simply because she had no time to react. By the time she's hit she's launched out thr car, she would have died instantly. In regards to the scene as a whole, you mention later on the flashs powers are explained yes but his powers are SHOWN here. Show don't tell. Furthermore it gives characterization for Barry. It shows how competent, careful and methodical he is with his powers. "Snyder makes his films with religious metaphors" every live action superman movie has done this, that's nothing special

Smallville did a really good job with how Clark was raised by Johnathan and Martha.

That's the thing, he's literally meant to be both.

Definetly.
How about superman sees himself as a boy from Smallville.
Finally someone who speaks my mind 👍👍
Bcz what others think doesn't matter , what matters is the goodness inside you.
Rule #1 on how to make a good Superman story: Don't take any inspiration from Frank Miller or Injustice.

Oh my god that’s so wholesome, I love it
Thanks for posting
thats so wholesome
Let me help."
The young man pulls the old woman into the back of the corner store, ordering everyone else out. With a gun to her head, he threatens the police. Absolute chaos is spreading across the crowd.
"Look! Up in the sky!"
The very first shot of Superman in this film is him floating down to land in front of the corner store. The police and first responders clear a path for the man of steel to enter. The old woman's grandchild is pointing at the store, crying, trying to explain to Superman what's wrong but is on the verge of hyperventilating.
"He's-! He's-! He's-! He's-!"
Superman takes off his cape and wraps it around the kid's shoulders. Kneeling down to eye level, he ruffles the kid's hair and says, "Everything is going to be all right. I promise."
He enters the corner store.
"Back off! I'll do it! I swear!"
"If I wanted to hurt you I can. I can move faster than the bullet in that gun, but I'll break every bone in your body. I can use heat vision to burn it to slag but you'll lose that hand. But I do. not. want to. hurt you."
"... What are you gonna do?"
"Ask you to put the gun down, let her go, and turn yourself in."
"They'll lock me up!"
"Yes, but you hurt that woman and you'll never be a free man again. I'll make sure you go to prison for the rest of your life. You end this nonsense here and now, a jury will look at you better, you will have a chance to get out. You're not a killer, yes you will be punished but you are no murderer. It is never too late to do the right thing."
"..."
The old woman squirms to be heard. "My name is Evelin, now my grandbaby is waiting for me. His name is Miles. What's yours?"
"... Raymond."
"You have a grandma too, everyone does. What is she going to think if she hears that her baby boy is a killer on tonight's evening news?"
Superman whispers, "It will break her heart."
The young man begins to cry. He hands the gun to Superman and allows the police to take him into custody. Miles hands the cape back to Superman, he and Evelin hug the man of steel as the crowd erupts in cheering.

@Erik Kemeey Go on, say we live in a dream world
That dream world Snyder quote followed by one of the most famous superman quotes was brilliant 😂.

That city is ruled by Lex Luthor.
How can such a place be a utopia.
Have you seen the ultimate edition, also Superman got his movie, he decided to focus more on Batman. Not a bad idea

Yet Christopher reeves superman took away zods powers crushed his hands and threw him into ice while smiling

He's a superman who wants to wear a v neck with kids, who lives in Smallville. Stop being delusional

Snyder takes the term "no good deed left unpunished" literally. ;)
Have you thought that his message is that ultimately, doing good things is noble even its hard and costs you?

Yeah, he just a nice guy, why it so hard to be a nice guy like really

Henry Cavill certainly could've been an amazing Superman, what's even more baffling is how well he understands the character, stating how much he loves the character, how much he understands what the character has shown to us and taught us, loving the humble nature and optimism the character embodies and would have preferred to have taken in his own ideas.

Yeah honestly destroying the truck was a very small part of Man of Steel but he full on destroyed that man’s livelihood
Even him just steeling peoples clothes is not something he would or should do
Its the little details such as this that show what kind of Superman Zack Snyder was directing.
You're so petty. 1) that was Clark before he dawned the cape 2) Smallville Clark had done worse, so did reeve's.
In every superman movie, cartoon, comic he does make a decision which we know he shouldn't have made.
i honestly hate Snyder's superman just a complete lack of hope and optimism he has no moral code or ideology to speak of its why he is such a weak underdeveloped character after 3 movie appearances you don't get the sense that he cares about humanity there has been zero accountability from him personally about the destruction from MOS
people were swearing up and down that it would be a character arc for superman where he realizes he need to be more careful when fighting and protect the civilians and this arc never happens and he is just as wreckless in BVS
Man this is one of the most based videos ive ever watched
Thank God for Superman and Lois
The fact that Ant Man of all characters managed to get a modern day live action trilogy complete before the practical godfather of the superhero archetype really goes to show how much WB dropped the ball with Superman in recent years, all for the sake of trying to “deconstruct” his character.
As an aspiring writer and filmmaker, this is exactly how I would’ve approach a Superman film. Make him more altruistic and not an objectivist
Man, I never heard a critique of Snyder's Superman or his films in general, done so well. They are empty and you give great context here. Perfect point and editing of the cartoon "dream world" and Zach's nihilist outlook. Jeez.
1) Hire a guy who virtually verbatim quoted the Manchester Black monologue from What's so funny about truth justice and the american way to direct
2) sit back and watch
I love Man of Steel, but I have to admit you make great points. Superman is suppose to be good for the sake of good for the most part. A character that is suppose to show us that not everyone has an agenda or self interest in mind. Great video 👏
I REALLY want Alan Silvestri to write a Superman theme.
He ain’t space Jesus. He’s space Moses.
He’s all of the above.
@ fair enough
I hate the idea of the uncaring Superman so much. Like, his whole thing is that he's empathy incarnate and almost, but not quite, omnipotent.
All he wants out of life is to make sure that everyone, everywhere, is safe and happy. His conflict is that it's an impossible desire, no matter how strong or fast you are. But, like the caring social worker or the person trying to unionize their Amazon warehouse, you do what you can, even knowing that winning is unlikely.
I’m glad someone got the balls to say this
One other thing that bothers me about Superman is the relationship with Lois Lane.
How?
This whole thing makes me think of a small scene from Justice League Vs. The Fatal Five. Batman sees in the future a statue of himself in an almost godly sorta fashion with the gold and whatnot, and all he says is "Definitely not my style". That's Superman when he sees himself in modern movies and the New 52
Zack just became manchester black when he said ''you fucking living a dreamword''
The only time this actually holds true is his confrontation with batman where his lines were contrived to start a fight
"That in the next scene batman keeps killing people left and right without care" wrong interpretation of his arc.
@@elijahlee3610 u dont have to cry for a horribly written superman with a boring wall of text bro .spiderman is always getting criticism . but does he back down ? no cuz he knows that what he does is for the greater good .
@@herloss448 bvs superman never backed down either so your point is invalid. Side note Henry's superman was the only live action movie superman to face opposite from society.
@@elijahlee3610 lol face opposite from society .so its a new idea ? he lasered down a ship in the middle of the city killing ppl and destroying buildings .he made out with lois lane standing in a human wasteland and the worst thing is he can hear the ppl who need help .u are a walking L bro .hes a horrible person raised by a horrible man who said son maybe u should let ur classmates die cuz ur identity is more important than a bunch of innocent kids .yeah anyone would hate him .BTW snyder is a big hack who made a generic action movie with a plot of a another hack director Michael bay movie .4 villains with that dude and 3 of them wants to turn earth in to their planet and ppl are not happy with the hero saying hes the one to blame .where have i seen that before ? oh right transformers movies😂😂

10:46 to 10:55 Zack, I genuinely feel terrible to what happened to your daughter, but that statement is pure bullsh*t!
Maybe taking inspiration from Injustice was never really a good idea for DCEU Superman
True, they should have approached little different.
There’s a great comic (I forget which one) where superman decides to take hospital kids like cancer patients on a trip around the world. It’s really wholesome :)
I’m so sick of the evil Superman shit it’s so overused
